Injury Notes: Bortuzzo, Mason, Matthews

The St. Louis Blues are getting some reinforcements on the blue line, as they have activated Robert Bortuzzo from the injured reserve. Bortuzzo has been sidelined for more than two weeks with a knee injury suffered against the Dallas Stars back in mid-February. The big defenseman had played in 55 games with the Blues up to that point and should jump back into the starting lineup sooner rather than later. According to The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, that could even be tonight in a re-match with the Stars with crucial divisional points on the line. The Blues then take four days off ahead of a season-defining road trip against Western wild card contenders: San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Colorado. If St. Louis is still alive in the playoff race after these next five games, they could look forward to another addition on defense in the return of Joel Edmundson. In the meantime, Bortuzzo will be looked upon to step up in his return.

  • Another Central Division squad is getting deeper at a key position. After nearly two months of dealing with concussions symptoms, Steve Mason is on his way back to the Winnipeg net and just in time for the stretch run. The Jets announced today that they have assigned Mason to their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, on a conditioning stint. The Moose in turn announced that Mason will get the start tonight against the Iowa Wild. With just 11 appearances and two head injuries to his name this season, Mason may need some time in the minors to get back in the swing of things and a week plus in the AHL would not be a surprise, but he will eventually make his return to Winnipeg. However, his role has changed dramatically over the course of this season. Signed to a two-year, $8.2MM starter-value contract this summer to presumably bridge the gap to Connor Hellebuyck, Mason instead has performed poorly and missed considerable time, while Hellebuyck has flourished. Mason will settle for a backup role down the stretch, supplanting Michael Hutchinson, and likely next year as well.
  • Auston Matthews isn’t quite ready to return to the Toronto lineup, but he is getting closer. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, in speaking with Leafs head coach Mike Babcock, says that Matthews has been skating regularly. Johnston adds that the fortunate part of an upper-body injury, in this case a separated shoulder, is that it doesn’t stop one from skating and keeping up with his conditioning. Matthews is known for his work ethic and has surely been skating hard while on the sidelines. Whenever the Leafs’ doctors give his shoulder the okay, he should be back at full force for Toronto. Sadly, that approval won’t be coming ahead of today’s outdoor game between the Leafs and Washington Capitals at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Matthews will miss his fourth straight game and fourteenth game due to injury in 2017-18.

Morning Notes: Predators, Hearings, Interference

The Nashville Predators are going to make a trade deadline acquisition no one expected, as they announced Mike Fisher would sign in the next few weeks and join the team for the last part of the season. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic though believes that they might not be done there.

On TSN’s Insider Trading last night, LeBrun reported that Nashville would still like a top-six winger if possible, though there is an obvious lack of urgency in GM David Poile. The Predators will strike only if there is a deal they really like, especially after the addition of Fisher improves their forward group.

Winnipeg Jets Recall Michael Hutchinson To Start

The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Michael Hutchinson to start tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, sending down Eric Comrie. Additionally, Adam Lowry has been activated from injured reserve while Jacob Trouba takes his place among the wounded.

Head coach Paul Maurice and the front office decided to give Connor Hellebuyck the night off after he participated in the All-Star festivities this past weekend, meaning Hutchinson will get his first opportunity of the season. That is very important for the 27-year old goaltender, as he is a pending unrestricted free agent and will take any opportunity to show that he belongs in the NHL.

Hutchinson is one of the more interesting cases over the next few weeks, as he’s been one of the best goaltenders in the minor leagues all season and has a history of relative success in the NHL. In 99 career games, he carries a .910 save percentage, though that is skewed by his extreme success early on in his career.

Still, he could be an option for a team looking to strengthen their goaltending depth before the deadline. If the Jets believe that Comrie and Steve Mason—currently dealing with the effects of his second concussion of the season—are enough depth behind Hellebuyck, they could sell Hutchinson to the highest bidder. Otherwise, he will be an interesting free agent case in the summer.

Hellebuyck is clearly the starter now in Winnipeg, after taking a huge step forward this season and establishing himself as one of the better goaltenders in the NHL. Mason though was just signed to a two-year, $8.2MM contract and is too expensive to bury in the minor leagues. When healthy, he’ll have a role on this team meaning there isn’t much room for Hutchinson. Instead, he could try to catch on somewhere else around the league as a backup, or even try to compete for a starting job on a rebuilding club.

A chance to prove himself against one of the top teams in the league doesn’t come every day, and you can bet many eyes around the NHL are tuning in to see what happens. Whether he’ll play another game as a Winnipeg Jet isn’t guaranteed, though he certainly has a good opportunity right now.

Expect James van Riemsdyk to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs all season. That’s what TSN’s Darren Dreger writes in his latest column, positing that he and fellow pending unrestricted free agents Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov, are best used as “own rentals” for the playoff push.

While there are some big numbers floating around for any potential van Riemsdyk extension, he’s continued to play an important role on the Maple Leafs, tying Auston Matthews for first on the team in goals with 19.

  • The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Michael Hutchinson from the AHL for tonight’s game, explaining that Steve Mason has fallen ill and can’t back up Connor Hellebuyck. To make room, the team has placed Adam Lowry on injured reserve. Hutchinson is an extremely interesting goaltender to keep an eye on this year, as he’s headed for unrestricted free agency in the summer. Though he’s stuck in the minor leagues this season due to Mason’s signing, the 27-year old has dominated the AHL with a .942 save percentage and could land an NHL job in the summer. In 99 career NHL games he does hold a .910 save percentage, and could be an excellent backup option.
  • New York Islanders head coach Doug Weight has confirmed that Michael Dal Colle will make his NHL debut tomorrow, the second-last player to do so from the first round of the 2014 draft. Only Connor Bleackley, who never signed with the Colorado Avalanche and re-entered the draft in 2016 (going in the fifth round), is left. Dal Colle was selected fifth overall, and still has some real upside to his game, but will have to quickly prove that he’s ready to take the next step.

The Capitals have yet to engage in contract talks with pending UFA defenseman John Carlson, his agent Rick Curran told Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.  Curran notes that he expects that to change in the coming weeks.  Washington’s salary cap situation likely has a lot to do with there being no discussions so far – the team has nearly $59MM tied up in just 13 players for next season already so there may not be enough room for another big-ticket deal.  Carlson is positioning himself for a big raise from the $3.97MM cap hit he has now as he has 31 points in 41 games which ranks him second among NHL defenders while averaging a career-high 26:10 per night in ice time.

  • The test results are in for Predators winger Filip Forsberg and the results aren’t great. The team announced that Forsberg will miss the next four-to-six weeks as a result of an upper-body injury sustained back on December 29th.  If there was ever a bright side to losing a top point getter, Nashville might take some solace in the fact that their CBA-mandated bye week, as well as the All-Star Game, will occur during this stretch.  Accordingly, there’s a chance he could only wind up missing nine games and while that isn’t insignificant, it could have been a whole lot worse.  Forsberg leads the Preds with 15 goals and 34 points through 37 games so far this season.
  • While the Jets are now allowed to sign Connor Hellebuyck to a contract extension, there hasn’t been much dialogue between the two sides on a new deal yet, reports Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The 24-year-old is playing on a one-year post-ELC bridge contract worth $2.25MM and has played quite well this year, posting a 2.38 GAA and a .922 SV% through 33 appearances.
  • Red Wings winger Tyler Bertuzzi has been told he will be sticking around with the team the rest of the year, reports Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. He was expected to make the team out of training camp but an early injury changed those plans and he wound up starting off with AHL Grand Rapids.  He has impressed since being recalled back on December 22nd, posting three assists in five games on the season while logging over 14 minutes a night in ice time, a considerable increase than the 9:06 he averaged in seven games as a rookie in 2016-17.

We take a look at what’s gone well in the first few months and what could improve as the season rolls on. So far we’ve covered the following teams:

What are the Winnipeg Jets most thankful for?

Forward depth.

After years of struggling, the Winnipeg Jets are one of the most dangerous in the NHL. The Jets have four forwards with ten or more goals this season, and that doesn’t include their leading scorer in Blake Wheeler, who has nine goals and 41 points. There’s also Mathieu Perreault who would have double digits if he hadn’t missed a good chunk of the season (he has nine currently) and Bryan Little who already has 21 points.

The most impressive part of the Jets forward group might be its youth, as regulars Mark Scheifele (24), Joel Armia (24), and Adam Lowry (24), Andrew Copp (23), Nikolaj Ehlers (21), Kyle Connor (21), Patrik Laine (19) are all 24 or younger. That’s a group that could be together for a long time, with other young forwards like Jack Roslovic, Nic Petan, Brendan Lemieux and Marko Dano all potentially making an impact down the line.

In the history of the Thrashers/Jets franchise, there is exactly one goaltender* that has recorded better than a .915 save percentage while with the team. That’s Al Montoya, who put up a .916 mark in 35 games between 2013-14. It’s an incredible run of futility by string of so-so goaltenders, and one that needed to change if the Jets were to ever really compete.

Enter 2017-18 Hellebuyck, who is carrying a .920 save percentage so far this season and has let everyone know that Steve Mason wasn’t needed. The 24-year old goaltender is 18-4-5 on the season, and is about as valuable of a piece as there is around the NHL. His play has allowed a team that was considered a playoff dark horse at best to become something of a powerhouse overnight.

What would the Jets be even more thankful for?

Division realignment.

Despite being 20-10-6 on the season, with a +19 goal differential and several All-Star level players, the Winnipeg Jets aren’t in first place in the Central Division. That honor goes to the Nashville Predators, who have the best points percentage out of the three teams (including the Jets and St. Louis Blues) tied with 46 points in the standings.

The Central doesn’t have any teams that are pushovers this season, after the Colorado Avalanche have turned things around from their historically bad 2016-17. It’ll take a continued effort from Winnipeg all season to secure one of the top three spots, and even then they’re more than likely going to lock horns with another excellent team in the first round.

What should be on the Jets’ Holiday Wish List?

Even more depth, preferably some that can kill penalties.

In all honesty, there’s not a lot that the Jets need to go out and acquire. If they can find a defenseman that is under contract or control for a few years it could help, with Toby Enstrom and Tyler Myers creeping towards free agency, but that can be dealt with in the offseason if need be. Adding Dmitri Kulikov last offseason has given them enough depth to survive injuries to Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien, especially with the emergence of Josh Morrissey as a top option.

With some forwards coming back recently their lineup has been lengthened back out, but the penalty kill remains one of their warts, if fairly innocuous. Matt Hendricks leads all forwards in short handed time, but has been relatively ineffective in that role and barely plays at even strength. While he’s a “character guy” and from all accounts fits in perfectly to the dressing room, every fringe improvement gets the Jets closer to being a real Stanley Cup contender.

*Peter Mannino actually has a 1.000 save percentage for the Jets, but faced just four shots in his one-period relief appearance in 2011.

Trade Notes: Veleno, Hutchinson, Penguins

Few junior-level trades draw the attention of any NHL teams outside of those teams who have drafted players involved. However, when it comes to “exceptional player” and presumptive 2018 top ten pick Joe Veleno, a new team is a whole new opportunity to evaluate his talent. Veleno, a member of the 2017 QMJHL champion Saint John Sea Dogs, has been traded to the Drummondville Voltigeurs for three first-round picks and two second-round picks, per Sportsnet. The Sea Dogs lost top prospects Thomas Chabot (OTT), Jakub Zboril (BOS), and Julien Gauthier (CAR), as well as 2016-17 leading scorers Matthew Highmore (CHI), Mathieu Joseph (TB), and Spencer Smallman (CAR) to the pros this season, resulting in a massive drop-off in success. Veleno and Edmonton Oilers 2017 selection Ostap Safin have been point-per-game scorers this season, but it hasn’t been enough to keep Saint John out of the basement of the QMJHL’s Maritime Division. Veleno, the first and only player awarded early entry to the QMJHL under “exceptional player status”, will now head to Drummondville and hook up with an overachieving Voltigeurs squad that is tied for the most points in the league, despite having few high-end prospects outside of 2018 eligible defenseman Nicolas Beaudin. How Veleno adjusts to not only joining a new team, but stepping in and immediately becoming the most talented player on the roster could be extremely telling for scouts. Veleno is projected by most to be selected somewhere between #5 and #10 overall in June, so success in Drummondville could be enough to ensure that he is a top five pick, while struggle could knock him out of the top ten altogether.

  • Back in the NHL, trade talk surrounding goalies is the hot topic right now. According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos (video), the Edmonton Oilers are focused in on Winnipeg Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson and are hoping to make a deal soon. With Cam Talbot injured, Edmonton has been on the hunt for help in net and Hutchison – who is buried in Winnipeg – appears to be their first choice. As Kypreos states, the only delay on the deal is the health of Jets backup Steve Mason. Mason is on his way back from a concussion and Winnipeg wants to take their time with his evaluation before trading away their goalie depth. Although it is Eric Comrie, not Hutchison, currently backing up Connor Hellebuyck, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff holds all the power in the negotiation and clearly wants to play it safe.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins are also thought to be in the hunt for backup goaltending. Although starter Matt Murray appears to be back to full health and ready to return, there are doubts about the play of young Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith behind him. Jarry was pulled from last night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after allowing three goals on 16 shots and DeSmith allowed the game-winner on one of the only nine shots he faced. Jarry has been okay overall this season, especially as a 22-year-old rookie, but DeSmith has struggled mightily in his two brief appearances and cannot be relied upon at this point in time. With Murray also not playing his best hockey thus far – he has a save percentage just north of .900 and a goals against average just south of 3.00 – the Penguins may want a more seasoned, dependable #2 or #3 behind him, something they tried and failed to find with Antti Niemi. 

Options In Net For The Edmonton Oilers

Things went from bad to worse for the Edmonton Oilers’ 2017-18 season when dependable starting goaltender Cam Talbot went down with and upper body injury and landed on IR and could remain out through December. His replacement, Laurent Brossoit, is struggling and that’s putting it gently. In 8 appearances, Brossoit has one win, an .872 save percentage, and a 3.80 GAA. Neither of the backup options, Nick Ellis or Eddie Pasquale, has any NHL experience, nor has either been given a chance to gain any just yet, nor has either played remarkably well in the AHL as well. It’s a dire situation for a team that is desperate for wins, or else the face a familiar possibility of finishing as one of the league’s worst teams this season.

So what are the options? TSN’s Frank Servalli believes that Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli is scouring the trade market for help in net. Servalli lists Buffalo’s Chad Johnson, Winnipeg’s Michael Hutchinson, Philadelphia’s Michal Neuvirth, Toronto’s Calvin Pickard, and Detroit’s Petr Mrazek as the top targets for Edmonton.

Johnson, of course, is known to be on the trade block courtesy of the Sabres’ own struggles and seems to be the best fit of these options as a reliable veteran on a one-year deal. Servalli even states that Johnson, along with Neuvirth, were among the Chiarelli’s free agency targets to be Talbot’s backup. However, as Servalli points out, there could be other suitors for Johnson, which could drive the price up.

More affordable assets to acquire could be Hutchinson or Pickard, due to their teams’ depth in goal. The Maple Leafs acquired Pickard from the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this year, but with Frederik Andersen playing well, a veteran backup in Curtis McElhinney, and other promising young goalies in Garret Sparks and Kasimir Kaskisuo in line, Pickard is expendable. So too could be McElhinney or Sparks as well, if Chiarelli favors those Toronto alternatives. In Winnipeg, the thriving Jets are doing just fine with Connor Hellebuyck, rookie Eric Comrie, and expensive free agent acquistion Steve Mason as their net rotation. A solid goaltender with ties to Chiarelli from the Boston Bruins, fourth-string Hutchinson seems like a likely target.

Mrazek and Neuvirth less so. Mrazek is still young, is making $4MM, and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. It is likely that he would be costly to acquire and costly to re-sign, when the Oilers really just need a stopgap. Neuvirth, who has a year remaining at $2.5MM, could replace Brossoit as the long-term backup to Talbot if Chiarelli so chooses, but also seems like an unlikely acquisition. AHL goaltenders from both the Red Wings and Flyers – Jared Coreau and Alex Lyon – might actually make more sense.

Other options: Eddie Lack or David Rittich from the rival Calgary Flames, Colorado’s Andrew Hammond, Anaheim’s Reto Berra, L.A.’s Jack Campbell or Jeff Zatkoff, and several more. The options are there, so the pressure is on Chiarelli to find a fair deal and to do it soon. Edmonton may simply lose upcoming games regardless of who is in net, but if the team continues forward with only Brossoit, the blame will fall on the front office for not doing something to at least increase their chances.
