Central Notes: Winnik, Upshall, DeBrinicat

September 30, 2017 at 1:16 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have seen enough out of Daniel Winnik, who is on a PTO with the team. He has been informed they don’t need to see him again and now begins the waiting game for the 32-year-old forward, who must wait to see if the Wild will choose him over youngsters Joel Eriksson Ek or Luke Kunin, according to The Athletic’s Michael Russo (subscription required).

Winnik, who is looking to play for his eighth NHL team, had a good camp and impressed head coach Bruce Boudreau.

“I pulled him aside and I talked to him and said, ’Danny, you’ve done great. I know exactly how you play. We just want to look at a couple of the young kids,'” Boudreau said. “So it’s not like he would have to come in here and play great to either make the team or not make the team.”

According to Russo, Kunin has had the better camp so far between the two rookies and the team intends to look at both he and Eriksson Ek more closely in tonight’s preseason game against the Dallas Stars. Kunin, who has been playing center for the team all preseason will be tried at right wing.

As for Winnik, he remains a free agent and could sign with any team, but might have to take a small pay cut if he makes the Wild’s roster as the team is low on cap space.

  • The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford tweets that Scottie Upshall passed a physical and was signed to a PTO and is currently practicing with the team. The hope is that a contract can be worked out in the next couple of days. Upshall spent the past two years in St. Louis. The 32-year-old fourth-liner had a solid season a year ago with the Blues, scoring 10 goals and eight assists. He was just released from his PTO with Vancouver and has a good chance to return to his old team with the multitude of injuries to players like Patrik Berglund, Zachary Sanford, Robby Fabbri and Alex Steen.
  • The Daily Herald’s John Dietz writes that it looks like Chicago Blackhawks’ Alex DeBrincat might make the team, writing that he had an excellent training camp. “It seems like every time he’s around the puck good things happen,” coach Joel Quenneville said to Blackhawks TV reporter Eric Lear. The Hawks still have many decisions to make, according to Dietz, including whether or not to keep seven or eight defensemen.

Steen's Hand Injury Not Expected To Keep Him Out Much Longer

September 29, 2017 at 8:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With the start of the regular season now less than a week away, Matt Duchene remains a member of the Avalanche and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman suggested to 630 CHED in Edmonton (audio link) that things are currently pretty quiet on the trade front with Colorado.  GM Joe Sakic has set a very high asking price and as of yet, no one has been willing to meet it so it appears there’s a good chance that this will drag out into the season.  Friedman notes that Columbus remains very interested in Duchene’s services while a trio of Western teams, Edmonton, Anaheim, and Nashville have been in and out of talks at times as well.  Duchene has two years left on his contract with a $6MM cap hit but aside from the Ducks, the other three teams all have the cap room to take him on without sending any money the other way.

More from the West:

  • Ducks defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen are progressing well from their respective offseason shoulder surgeries, head coach Randy Carlyle told Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register. Both players have been skating in recent days, albeit in non-contact jerseys.  Both rearguards are expected to miss all of October but have set a target to return to Anaheim’s lineup on November 1st.
  • While Alex Steen’s hand injury will keep him out for the first week of the regular season, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the issue isn’t expected to keep him out too long beyond that. Steen is going to be counted on to play a big role when he returns, especially with long-term injuries to center Patrik Berglund (out until December) and winger Robby Fabbri, whose season is over before it even started due to a torn ACL.
  • The Canucks have not yet decided where to assign defenseman Olli Juolevi. His agent Markus Lehto told Rick Dhaliwal of News 1130 (Twitter link) that a team in Europe could be a possible landing spot.  The OHL’s London Knights – where he has spent the past two seasons – seems to remain the likeliest destination for the 19-year-old for now.

Poll: How Should The Blues Deal With Their Injury Woes?

September 28, 2017 at 4:10 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 12 Comments

The St. Louis Blues have been ravaged by injury already this preseason, with no fewer than five key players out long term. Robby Fabbri, Patrik Berglund, Zachary Sanford, Alex Steen and Jay Bouwmeester are all out somewhere between weeks and months, and each was supposed to play a big role on the team this year. So, while discussing Fabbri’s season-ending knee injury at a press conference earlier today, GM Doug Armstrong was asked about the possibility of signing free agent Jaromir Jagr.

He’s a great player, certainly someone we’ve talked about internally as with a number of players. We’re going to have to really dig deep into how our style of play is, and what type of players can come in and compliment that style.

Armstrong was clear he wouldn’t rush to a conclusion, but did reiterate that since the plan he set forth on July 1st, he’s lost nearly a third of his penciled-in roster. That would suggest that a move will have to come to get better, even if it is simply bringing in a young player from inside their own organization.

So what do you think the Blues should do? Should they go after a free agent like Jagr to compliment what is left, make a trade to try and shore up the roster, or rely on some of their young guns to fill in until help arrives healthy. Make sure to leave your comments below!

St. Louis Blues Sign Robert Thomas

September 28, 2017 at 12:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Though he was just sent back to the London Knights to compete in the OHL again this year, the St. Louis Blues have signed Robert Thomas to a three-year entry-level contract. Thomas was the team’s first pick in the recent entry draft, selected 20th-overall.

At the beginning of the 2016-17 season, the London Knights were looking for someone to step up in the absence of some of their big names. Mitch Marner, Christian Dvorak and Matthew Tkachuk were all headed to the NHL, leaving a gaping hole for someone to step into. Thomas was one of those who pounced on the opportunity, exploding to 66 points in 66 games as a 17-year old. He became a reliable member of the Knights’ powerplay, and showed off his elite playmaking ability with 50 assists on the year.

While Thomas wasn’t expected to make the NHL for some time, there is reason to believe it may come in relatively short order. In training camp he showed perfectly capable of keeping up with professional players, scoring twice in the preseason and creating several offensive chances. He’s not big, but can handle himself at the OHL level and should fill out even more by the time he has to crack the pro ranks. Though Cliff Pu (Buffalo) will be back in London as well, J.J. Piccinich (Toronto) will not, giving Thomas even more opportunity to contribute offensively. It could be a big year for him, before trying to compete for a spot in training camp again next fall.

Jaromir Jagr “Discussed Internally” By St. Louis

September 28, 2017 at 10:29 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

At a press conference to discuss Robby Fabbri’s season-ending knee injury, St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong was asked about the potential of Jaromir Jagr being signed to help the team up front. The Blues now have several forwards out long-term, and will have to put a lot of pressure on their young players at this point.

In response to the Jagr question, Armstrong said that management had discussed that possibility internally, and that they’d need to take a look at their style of play and see if there could be a fit.

Robby Fabbri To Miss Entire 2017-18 Season

September 27, 2017 at 4:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

In an incredibly disappointing turn of events, the St. Louis Blues announced today that Robby Fabbri will miss the entire season after re-injuring his surgically repaired left knee. Fabbri, who was profiled as our “Player to Watch” for the Blues this year, was originally thought to have just a minor aggravation, but clearly there was structural damage once again.

Fabbri played just 51 games last season after tearing his ACL in early February. At that point, he had 29 points and was well on his way to setting several career-highs. The 21st-overall pick in 2014, Fabbri is a dynamic offensive player who was a pick by many to break out in the next few years. That will obviously have to wait, and ruling him out so early does throw into question what kind of a comeback he’ll eventually have. Knee surgeries can be tough to come back from, especially for players who are known for their quickness and lateral movement.

The Blues have been ravished by injury early on, losing Zachary Sanford for five to six months and seeing Alex Steen and Jay Bouwmeester go down to broken bones. The latter two will be re-evaluated at the end of camp, but neither is expected to return very soon. It was going to be tough to replace those players already, but Fabbri’s injury will just put even more stress on a team that has struggled to progress in the playoffs. While there are young talented players coming like Klim Kostin and Jordan Kyrou, it will likely be a while before either can make a real impact. Kostin remains in training camp, but Kyrou was sent back to junior today.

Zach Sanford Undergoes Successful Surgery

September 27, 2017 at 10:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

  • Zach Sanford underwent successful surgery on his shoulder yesterday, and will be out the expected five to six months. Blues fans had hoped Sanford would push for a full-time spot this season after coming over from the Washington Capitals in the Kevin Shattenkirk deal, but will be out for most of the season after dislocating his shoulder this summer. The 22-year old scored five points in 13 games down the stretch for the Blues, but will have to fight to get back into the lineup in 2018.

Toronto Marlies With Several NHL Veterans In Camp

September 25, 2017 at 9:11 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 4 Comments

While many AHL camps have gotten underway in recent days largely with the early cuts from their NHL affiliates and ECHL hopefuls as “campers”, the Toronto Marlies drew some attention today when they announced a 40-man initial roster featuring several familiar names.

Among the many in attendance are NHL veterans Jordan Caron, Brandon Gormley, Matt Hackett, and Mackenzie Skapski. Caron and Gormley are especially interesting as past first-round picks, while Hackett and Skapski are two of the very few remaining free agent goaltenders on the market. All four players have value in their own right, yet end up not on NHL contracts, or in NHL camps, or even on AHL contracts. Why?

Skapski may be the easiest to explain. After two impressive spot starts at the young age of 21 with the New York Rangers in 2014-15, Skapski’s career has been in free fall. The next year, Skapski posted a 3.00+ GAA and nearly a .900 save percentage in the AHL and ECHL. Those numbers continued to plummet this past season, with Skapski making 13 rough starts in the AHL and spending the majority of the season in the ECHL.

The once-promising Hackett also made his NHL debut at 21 years old with the Minnesota Wild back in 2011-12. Hackett made 12 appearances with the Wild in his rookie season and had an impressive 2.37 GAA and .922 save percentage. While that level of performance was unsustainable, Hackett continued to make a living as a backup or third-string option for the Wild and Buffalo Sabres for years, before taking on more of an AHL depth role for the Anaheim Ducks since 2015. However, too much depth in net, as well as injury issues, limited Hackett to only seven starts last season, in which he was less than spectacular. More of an unknown commodity now than the future-starter tag from years ago, Hackett needs to prove himself once again at the pro level.

Gormley, the 13th overall pick in 2010 by the Arizona Coyotes, has not had the career expected of him when he was selected before fellow defensemen like Derek Forbort, Mark Pysyk, and Justin Faulk early in the draft. Gormley has just 58 games of NHL experience and has not played at the highest level since midway through the 2015-16 season. However, Gormley had been a productive AHLer, with 75 points, more than half a point per game, through his first three pro seasons. In the past two seasons? Only 21 points in 91 games. With the points disappearing, Gormley faces the possibility that his career could be coming to an end soon at just 25 years old. Gormley could use a big camp to keep that from coming to fruition.

Caron is probably the most notable player in any AHL camp on a tryout basis, not just the Marlies’, as the Boston Bruins’ 2009 first-rounder was a “black ace” call-up by the St. Louis Blues mere months ago. While Caron has the appearance of having stuck around the NHL, in actuality he has only played in four NHL games since the end of the 2014-15 season. Nevertheless, the 6’3″, 205-lb. power forward is still a veteran of over 150 NHL games and has shown flashes of ability from time to time. If any of these four player can make the Marlies – and make a difference – it is Caron.

Fabbri Will Miss 10 Days After Re-Injuring Knee

September 24, 2017 at 1:37 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Already having lost several key players to injuries, the St. Louis Blues just found about another injured player in star young forward Robby Fabbri. The 21-year-old forward, who went down with a knee injury and had surgery on his ACL, re-injured his knee during Saturday’s preseason game, according to NBC Sports James O’Brien. He will miss the rest of training camp and sit out for 10 days and then be re-evaluated.

The injury is just another blow to the Blues, who have already lost several key players, including Patrik Berglund, Zachary Sanford, Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Steen. Berglund underwent left shoulder surgery on June 27 and is expected to be out until at least December. Sanford also injured his shoulder and is expected to be out for at least five or six months, while Bouwmeester fractured his ankle and will sit out for two to three weeks before being re-evaluated. Steen injured his hand and has been ruled out for the remainder of training camp and will be evaluated in two to three weeks, just like Bouwmeester.

As for Fabbri, knee injuries can be difficult to recover from, so despite just a re-evaluation after 10 days, the worry is he might be out for much longer. Fabbri, the team’s first-round pick in 2014, scored 18 goals and had 19 assists in his rookie season. He was on his way of equaling or even surpassing those totals when he went down with the knee injury. Fabbri finished the year with 11 goals and 18 assists and many were counting on him to take over the team’s second-line center spot this year, although the team left him at the wing position during yesterday’s game.
