Comparative Standings: One Year Ago

December 12, 2016 at 4:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With the first third of the season completed for all but Columbus (who have amazingly played just 26 games, six fewer than the Winnipeg Jets), there have been some huge swings from a year ago.

Those Blue Jackets are the league’s most improved team, with a staggering 18 more points through 26 games than last season. Their huge swing is only matched by the Dallas Stars equally amazing drop-off of 18 points the other way. The Jackets can attest their improvement to the development of young players like Zach Werenski and Alexander Wennberg, while the Stars have seen a litany of injuries to their star players including Jason Spezza, Patrick Sharp and Johnny Oduya.

The Central Division as a whole is off to a slower start this year, with only the Chicago Blackhawks bettering their 2015-16 record. The Colorado Avalanche, expected to take a step forward with their young core has suffered the exact same fate with 23 points through 27 games.

The two biggest Canadian rebuild stories, Edmonton and Toronto have both improved, though not as largely as the fan bases in each city might have you believe. Four points for the Maple Leafs and five for the Oilers lend credence to the idea that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that counts. Though both franchises have a lot to look forward to, keeping up an advanced pace for an entire season is extremely difficult. The two teams finished last season with just 69 and 70 points respectively.

Below are the current standings. In parenthesis is the difference in points through the same amount of games last year.

Carolina Hurricanes Send Phil Di Giuseppe To AHL

December 12, 2016 at 2:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As the Carolina Hurricanes come home from a three game west coast road trip to play the next four on home ice, they’ve decided to send Phil Di Giuseppe to the minors to have him get some more ice time. After playing just 7:31 on Saturday night’s loss to the San Jose Sharks, Di Giuseppe had clearly lost the confidence of the coaching staff.

A gritty forechecking winger, Di Giuseppe had been called up most recently to replace Jordan Staal after the Canes alternate captain suffered a concussion late last month. In 18 games for the club this season, Di Giuseppe had only registered two points, despite initially getting ample playing time with a number of skilled players.

With Elias Lindholm closing in on a return from his lower-body injury, it figures that he’ll likely get back into the lineup Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks. The Hurricanes, at 11-11-6, are struggling to find much early season success despite a developing blue line and youth-infused lineup. With only 68 goals through 28 games, the team will need players like Lindholm to start producing like they’re capable of. The 22-year old had a career high 17 goals in 2014-15, but has notched only two so far this season. He has a long way to match the 39 points he’s scored in back to back seasons, let alone improving on those numbers as expected.

Jakub Nakladal Signs In KHL

December 2, 2016 at 1:53 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

One of this off-season’s more intriguing stories has finally come to an end, as Jakub Nakladal has opted to sign overseas, giving up his dream of finding an NHL team… at least for now. The 28-year-old defenseman has joined Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on a one-year contract, as confirmed by KHL insider Aivis Kalnins. Nakladal will immediately become one of the most talented defenseman in the Kontinental League.

After a long, successful career in Europe, including multiple seasons in the KHL, Nakladal made the trip across the Atlantic prior to last season after signing a one-year, $925K deal with the Calgary Flames. Though he appeared in only 27 games with the team and posted just five points, the Flames’ fan base was highly supportive of bringing the Czech native back for another year. Nakladal had been very impressive in 35 games with Calgary’s AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat, and had done enough in his limited NHL minutes to impress many fans. A stay-at-home defenseman who is very sound in his own end but also has strong possession numbers, implying an ability to move the puck as well. Many felt that, given the opportunity to play more and show his ability, Nakladal could turn out to be top-six defenseman. Although he is not much of a scorer or play-maker, Nakladal is a responsible blue liner who could have helped a young, offensively-minded Flames squad.

Instead, the summer dragged on and no contract offer came from Calgary. As July turned to August, and the free agent market for defenseman dried up, Nakladal was left as one of the few viable options available. Despite rumors, no firm offer ever presented itself. Even after Nakladal impressed many on the global stage with a strong performance with the Czech Republic team that surprised many at the World Cup of Hockey, nothing came immediately following. Finally, on October 9th, Nakladal signed a one-year, $600K pact with the Carolina Hurricanes. However, it seemed that as soon as he got there he was gone. After playing in just three games and posting a -4, the Hurricanes terminated Nakladal’s contract just two weeks ago after he cleared waivers. Nakladal was a free agent once more and it was clear that there was no market for his services in the NHL this season.

Now, Nakladal heads back home to Europe, where he has spent the majority of his career, and is set to join Lokomotiv. Currently third in the Tarasov Division of the KHL’s Western Conference, Lokomotiv is one of the better defensive teams in the league and is about to get even better. Joining former NHLers like Max Talbot, Brandon Kozun, and Stanislav Chistov, Nakladal hopes to shine for Lokomotiv this season and lead the team to success in an effort to again try to earn the attention of NHL decision makers. Expect the defensive defenseman to try his luck at an NHL deal again next summer, as time is running out as he approaches 30 years old.

Forbes’ 2016-17 NHL Team Valuations

November 30, 2016 at 3:43 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

If you’re looking to buy an NHL franchise, here is your market value. For those who do not know of the world-famous company, Forbes is a leading American business magazine, named for its editor-in-chief, Steve Forbes. The company focuses on financial and business stories in a multitude of industries, including technology, sciences, art, law and, of course, the professional sports industry. Each year, Forbes runs a valuation of sports franchises around the globe, from NFL football in the United States to UEFA “football” in Europe. Today, Forbes released its valuations and rankings of all thirty current NHL teams – with the Vegas Golden Knights not quite ready to be analyzed just yet.

Unsurprisingly, the most successful team in North America’s biggest city reigns supreme over the rest of the league. With deep playoff runs in back-to-back years and a hot start to 2016-17, the New York Rangers are considered to be the NHL’s most valuable franchise with a $1.25B valuation. The Rangers top the chart for the second year in a row, after being denied the top spot for more than a decade prior, and see a 4% bump in their value from last year. Success coupled with some heavy renovations to Madison Square Garden and nearly a nightly sellout rate brings New York the big bucks, as they took in about $219MM in revenue last year, $17MM more than the next in line.

Second and third overall are Original Six Canadian power houses: the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. Both hold on to their respective places from last year. However, the Maple Leafs held the top spot for an astonishing ten-year stretch from 2005 to 2014, before being bumped down to #3 last year. Having made the playoffs just once in the last decade, as well as seeing a 13-year sellout streak snapped in 2014-15, there is no doubt that the team has lost some value. A $1.1B valuation for a team that has struggled as much as Toronto has is not too shabby though, and is a testament to the city and its fans. Meanwhile, Montreal joins the Rangers as the only team to bring in over $200MM in revenue in 2015-16. The annual leader in attendance among the seven Canadian NHL teams, Montreal is a titan of industry in Canadian pro sports with a $1.12B valuation. Although both the Canadiens and Maple Leafs lost value this past year (5% and 4% respectively), this is most likely due to the weakness of the Canadian dollar. Both teams continue to excel fiscally, worth much more than any other Canadian NHL team or the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Raptors, or likely the entire Canadian Football League combined.

Rounding out the top five are the Chicago Blackhawks ($925MM) and Boston Bruins ($800M). The 2013 Stanley Cup opponents have more in common than just that. First, they nearly complete an Original Six reunion atop the valuation rankings, if it weren’t for the Detroit Red Wings down in eighth place. It’s no shock that the NHL’s oldest and most decorated teams are it’s most valuable. Next, the Blackhawks can make an argument that they are one of the most successful North American pro sports teams of this century, with three Stanley Cup championships, a roster filled with future Hall of Famers, and unrelenting success each and every year. Two of their strongest competitors for that title: the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. While the Blackhawks have been one of the best teams around, it’s no doubt that the Bruins valuation has been helped not just by their own success (2011 Stanley Cup champs), but also by the unquestionable status of Boston as the best sports city in the world over the past fifteen years. Interestingly enough, the Bruins’ valuation increased 7% over the past year, the biggest jump of any team in the top five.

Other notable Forbes valuations: the Pittsburgh Penguins ($570MM) at just 11th, despite years of success and being the reigning Cup champs (ownership reportedly balked at offers well below their own $750MM valuation and took the team off the market); the New York Islanders ($385MM) at 18th, an 18% increase from last season  (though a sharp regression given their 2016-17 performance would be no surprise); the Dallas Stars ($500M, 12th), Tampa Bay Lightning ($305M, 24th), and Nashville Predators ($270MM, 26th), who continue to transform non-traditional hockey markets and all saw strong gains since last year; the Florida Panthers ($235MM), who despite being 29th saw a league-leading 26% value increase since last season as a new ownership group transforms the culture; and of course, the last-ranked Carolina Hurricanes ($230MM), who continue to struggle in the standings and in the ticket office, bringing up the rear in league attendance in 2015-16 and so far this year. Their valuation may be the most important of any Forbes calculated this year, as owner Peter Karmanos appears poised to sell the team in the near future.

The $500MM expansion fee for the new Las Vegas team would put the team right near the middle of the pack if that is indeed their valuation in 2017-18. The average NHL team is worth about $517MM, a 3% increase from last year’s Forbes list. The league’s economics continue to improve, which means a higher valuation for most teams. With the league enjoying increased media exposure and looking forward to all that expansion will bring this summer and next season, along with a now controlled salary cap structure, expect the profits of NHL teams to keep moving on up. If you’re in the market for a pro hockey team, start saving.

Snapshots: Jankowski, Di Giuseppe, Condra, Jurco

November 28, 2016 at 6:06 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL tonight:

  • The Calgary Flames announced today that Mark Jankowski will make his NHL debut tonight against the New York Islanders. The 2012 first round draft pick is the 29th (of 30) player drafted in the first round that year to make a start. St. Louis Blues draft pick Jordan Schmaltz is now the only players from that round yet to play an NHL game . Postmedia writer Wes Gilbertson reports that Jankowski will play second-line center between Kris Versteeg and Troy Brouwer.
  • Fellow 2012 draftee Phil Di Giuseppe was recalled today by the Carolina Hurricanes. The Maple, ON forward has 2G and 5A in 8 games for the Charlotte Checkers, and will replace the injured Jordan Staal who is out indefinitely with a concussion.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning announced that the team has reassigned forward Erik Condra to the Syracuse Crunch. Condra has put up 3G and 6A in 13 games for the Crunch, but was held pointless in his two games with the Lightning. This move may be to make room for an injured player’s return—namely Anton Stralman.
  • The Detroit Red Wings will have forward Tomas Jurco back for Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Stars, reports the Windsor Star’s Bob Duff. Jurco has been on the sidelines since undergoing back surgery this summer. The Wings could use all the offensive help they can get as the team currently sits seventh in the Atlantic Division.

Snapshots: Ivan Hlinka Tournament, Three Stars, Staal, And More

November 28, 2016 at 4:36 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 3 Comments

The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup is making its way from Europe to North America. Hockey Canada announced today that the premiere under-18 hockey tournament will be hosted by Edmonton, Alberta in 2018, 2020, and 2022. Named after Czech legend Ivan Hlinka, the tournament has been operated by the Czech Ice Hockey Association and the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation since 1991. Traditionally held in August, the eight-nation summer tournament brings together the best of the best in teenage hockey players, as well as fans from around the world. Canada has won the tournament 20 times and will now get it’s first chance to take home the title in front of a home crowd.

In other league news:

  • The NHL named it’s 3 Stars of the Week today, pegging Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson, New Jersey Devils winger Mike Cammalleri, and San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns as first, second, and third respectively. Anderson continues to play well this season, despite dealing with the difficult news of his wife’s cancer diagnosis in October. He improved to 12-4-1 this week, including wins over Eastern Conferences forces Montreal, Boston, and the New York Rangers. Returning from injury, Cammalleri potted four goals and added four helpers as well, as the Devils continue to defy expectations. The veteran scorer leads the team with seven goals, despite missing six games. Fresh off of a major long-term extension, Burns contributed six points in four games for the Sharks, including an impressive goal from about center ice.
  • Jordan Staal suffered a concussion in the Carolina Hurricanes’ game against the Florida Panthers yesterday, reports ’Canes beat writer Chip Alexander. GM Ron Francis has yet to issue any more information, and there is currently no timetable for the return of the Carolina star.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have a bug going around the locker room. Just a few days after forward Rene Bourque missed practice with an illness, defenseman Erik Johnson has fallen victim to what is believed to be the same sickness, but the team is hopeful that he will be ready for the Avs’ game tomorrow night. Terry Frei of the Denver Post spoke with coach Jared Bednar who said “it’s been going through our team a little bit, but we’ve contained it and it’s only been a 24-hour thing, so (Johnson) should be able to go tomorrow.”
  • The Anaheim Ducks have recalled forward Chris Wagner and defenseman Shea Theodore from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. Wagner was just sent down recently and has yet to even play an AHL game. In 19 games in Anaheim thus far, the energy-liner has contributed two goals. Theodore, a 2013 first-round pick, has played in eight games with the Ducks this season, but was demoted as a result of the Hampus Lindholm resolution. With the extraordinary defensive depth of the Ducks, Theodore’s trip to Anaheim may be a short one.

Hurricanes Staal Leaves Game, Will Not Return

November 27, 2016 at 6:14 pm CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

Jordan Staal suffered an upper-body-injury during the first period of Carolina’s game this evening against Florida and it has since been announced by the team – via Twitter – that he will not return. Michael Smith, who is a contributor on the team’s website, added that Staal did not see a shift in the final seven minutes of the frame.

Staal is currently tied for third on the team in goals with five and his nine points rank sixth. He leads all Carolina forwards in average ice time, seeing 19:15 a night. The 28-year-old center has seven years remaining on what was originally a 10-year, $60MM contract in Carolina. The $6MM AAV makes Staal the Hurricanes highest-paid player.

More to come as details emerge.

Allen’s Latest: Hamilton, Kane, Shattenkirk, Hanzal, Murphy

November 25, 2016 at 7:02 pm CDT | by natebrown 15 Comments

The USA Today’s Kevin Allen is more than happy to suggest a holiday wish list for a handful of NHL teams. Allen offers advice to the follow clubs:

  • New York Rangers: Allen suggests that the Rangers could snap up Dougie Hamilton from the Calgary Flames should they be willing to give up J.T. Miller. But just as quickly as he suggests it, he provides rationale as to why it might be far fetched. First, the financials wouldn’t work with Hamilton’s $5.75MM cap hit. Second, Miller is playing well with 18 points in 21 games while Hamilton has been struggling. For the deal to work, Allen believes the Rangers would have to shed another contract to either Calgary or another team in need of a defenseman (Allen suggests Kevin Klein).
  • New York Islanders: The team in Brooklyn is Allen’s next focus and he suggests Evander Kane to the Isles. The losses of Kyle Okposo, Matt Martin, and Frans Nielsen coupled with the poor production from pricey free agent pickup Andrew Ladd makes Kane a reasonable target. However, Allen points out that the Isles do not have the cap room to add Kane’s bulky contract and would have to do some “juggling” in order to make it work. Allen adds that a defenseman would help out Buffalo’s cause if they were willing to talk about Kane.
  • Boston Bruins: How many people have suggested Kevin Shattenkirk to Boston? Allen chimes in here as well, believing that the right handed defenseman would be the perfect addition to the blue line. Further, Allen writes that if Boston can convince Shattenkirk to re-sign with them, overpaying a bit would be well worth it.
  • Montreal Canadiens: Arizona’s Martin Hanzal would be a great target for the Habs, who Allen feels could use another scorer to make a Stanley Cup run. What would it take? Allen believes a young player and a draft pick.
  • Detroit Red Wings: It hasn’t been easy to fill the enormous hole that Nicklas Lidstrom left four seasons ago, and the Wings have struggled to find any solutions. Allen believes the Carolina Hurricanes could provide some help in the way of defenseman Ryan Murphy. Allen predicts that the Red Wings could trade a young forward to land him, but also sees a number of potential suitors for Murphy, namely the Colorado Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks.

Eddie Lack Concussed

November 21, 2016 at 5:39 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

The Carolina Hurricanes announced that goaltender Eddie Lack suffered a concussion today in practice. The team has called up Michael Leighton from the AHL Charlotte Checkers to serve as backup tomorrow night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lack has since been placed on Injured Reserve.

Lack has not been the goaltender the Hurricanes hoped for since acquiring him from the Vancouver Canucks. Last year Lack posted a .901 SV% and a 2.81 GAA. He’s fared even worse this season with a .856 SV% and a 3.80 GAA in 4 starts.

Lack’s performance has relegated the goaltender to backup status, and Cam Ward’s stats so far imply that Ward is not relinquishing the starting job anytime soon. In 13 starts this season, Ward has a .916 SV% and a 2.36 GAA. Not elite numbers, but definitely good enough to keep him between the pipes full-time.

Snapshots: Three Stars, Kunitz, Leivo

November 21, 2016 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Brett Barrett Leave a Comment

The NHL has named its three stars of the week for November 14-20: Jeff Carter, Cam Ward, and Nicklas Backstrom.

3. Backstrom had four goals and four assists in four games. Five of those points in the Capitals’ 7-1 win over the Penguins, which represented a career-high for Backstrom. He now has 17 points in 20 games.

2. Ward went 3-0-0 last week, with a 0.964 GAA and one shutout. He’s on a four-game winning-streak, which is his longest since the 2014-15 season. Thanks to Ward’s efforts, the Hurricanes are climbing out of the Eastern Conference basement and are just three points out of a wildcard spot.

1. Carter scored the winning goal in all three of the Kings’ victories last week, as they went 3-1-0. Carter had four goals and six points in those four games, and scored the winning goal in three consecutive games against Edmonton, New Jersey, and Anaheim. He cracked 600 career points with his second-period goal against the Ducks on Sunday. Carter now leads the NHL with five game-winning goals this season.

In other news around the NHL:

  • The Penguins have placed 37-year-old winger Chris Kunitz on Injured Reserve. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said Kunitz is considered week-to-week with a “lower-body injury.” To fill Kunitz’s roster spot, the Penguins have recalled Jake Guentzel from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL. Guentzel has 17 points in 16 games with the AHL Penguins. Kunitz was initially hurt against Washington on Wednesday, but played in both of the team’s games over the weekend, posting three assists.
  • Toronto Maple Leafs winger Josh Leivo is still not ready to return to the lineup, according to coach Mike Babcock (via James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail). Leivo was recalled from a conditioning stint with the Marlies and practiced with the NHL club on Monday morning, but has not been cleared to play yet. Leivo will continue to practice with the Maple Leafs but as a non-roster player. Because Leivo would require waivers to be sent down to the Marlies, the Maple Leafs appear content to temporarily leave him in limbo rather than lose a good young player. When a Twitter follower asked how Leivo can be healthy enough to play five games in the AHL but not healthy enough to play in the NHL, Mirtle just shrugged. Leivo has 8 points in 28 career NHL games (none this season), and 124 points in 171 AHL games.
