Edmonton Claims Davidson Off Waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have claimed defenseman Brandon Davidson off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens today, according to Elliotte Friedman. This will mark Davidson’s second stint in Edmonton as the Oilers were the team to draft him back in 2010.

Davidson played 91 games for the Oilers until he was traded in February of last season to Montreal for David Desharnais. Davidson was considered a promising young defenseman a few years ago with excellent defensive skills, but never fully developed in Edmonton. After being traded to Montreal, however, he never seemed to be in the coaching staff’s plans too often as he only played 23 games for the Canadiens since February. This season, Davidson has one assist in 13 games.

Now reunited with his previous team, Davidson should immediately jump into their lineup with their injuries on the blueline to Adam Larsson and Andrej Sekera. However, Larsson is eligible to come off injured reserve on Wednesday, and if he does, the team will have to make another defensive decision then, as they will have eight players on the blueline. However, Davidson might be a preferred option to defenseman Yohann Auvito, who has a history of taking a lot of risks on offense.

Assuming he stays with Edmonton after that, he could get a matchup with his old team on Saturday in Montreal.

Islanders Have No Backup Plan For Arena

New York Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky said there is no backup plan in regards to the Belmont Park arena proposal. He says that he and his partners are “ready to go and all in.”

Newsday’s Jim Baumbach interviewed the co-owner and Ledecky feels strongly the Islanders are going to be awarded the Belmont site by Empire State Development, although there is no timeline to when that might happen despite the fact that proposals were submitted on Sept. 28 of this year. Despite that, Ledecky won’t even consider options if they don’t get awarded the Belmont site.

“We have no Plan B,” Ledecky said, “and we haven’t even thought about one.”

The team also has to work out a deal to opt-out of their 25-year lease with the Barclays Center, their current home since 2015. Without knowing the state of their Belmont proposal, they have until Jan. 1, 2018, to negotiate a modification of their deal and must officially opt out before Jan. 31, 2018. Ledecky remains confident that the team will get the Belmont bid and doesn’t see it affecting the team interest in negotiating a deal to leave Barclays Center.

“I don’t think that’s in our thinking,” Ledecky said. “Instead of dealing in the hypothetical, we wake up every day optimistic that the state agency will reach a decision on a timely basis.”

Ledecky said the Islanders are ready to proceed the moment they are awarded the site, saying the Wilpon family’s Sterling Project Development will build their arena and Madison Square Garden-backed Oak View Group will operate it.

“We are in position to proceed immediately,” Ledecky said. “if the ESD makes the decision to give us the opportunity to do so . . .  We are ready and poised and focused, hoping for good news.”

The team is well known, however, for having issues with their arena plans and the question is, will this be any different? The success of the team locking up their star player, John Tavares, to a long-term deal might just hinge on this deal.

“The past is the past, and we’re all about the future,” Ledecky said. “And we think we have something that really will galvanize the community in a very positive way. It will galvanize the fanbase and we think it’s a tremendous opportunity for the Long Island area to have a world-class, really state-of-the-art arena.”

Philadelphia Flyers Must Look To Future

The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their 10th straight game today against the Boston Bruins and while that losing streak is hard to take, Philly.com’s Sam Carchidi writes that there are positives despite all the negatives the team has been enduring this year. The team is playing well at even strength, struggling mainly on special teams and the team should be getting defenseman Radko Gudas back from a 10-game suspension on Dec. 12, so there is hope for this season.

Regardless, the scribe writes fans may have to look towards the future rather then at this year’s production. While fans are angry about the offseason trade in which the Flyers traded away center Brayden Schenn, who is currently putting up good numbers in St. Louis with 10 goals and 20 assists, there are long-term assets to consider. The team took on Jori Lehtera’s contract in exchange, and the veteran is making that deal more challenging to analyze as he hasn’t scored a goal for Philadelphia this year. However, the team also got back two first round picks in that deal. The team drafted center Morgan Frost this past year, who is playing well in the OHL with 13 goals and 27 assists in 26 games. The team is also getting another first-rounder in the bountiful 2018 draft as well.

Carchidi writes the team should have ample cap room next year when the contracts of Valtteri Filppula ($5MM AAV) and Matt Read ($3.63 AAV) expire. If the team chooses to buyout the final year of Lehtera’s deal, the team should have ample space to sign a free agent this offseason when players such as John Tavares, Evander Kane and James van Riemsdyk are available.

However, the team also has quite a few prospects starting with 19-year-old goaltender Carter Hart, a 2016 second-round pick, who looks like the team’s goaltender of the future. After recovering from a bout of mononucleosis, he has put up huge numbers in the WHL, including a 1.58 GAA and a .953 save percentage in 13 games. He is expected to be Canada’s starting goaltender in the upcoming World Juniors and some believe he could be ready to be the Flyers starter in the 2019-20 season after a year in the AHL.

If you include that with the large amount of young players under the age of 25 on the Flyers current roster such as Sean Couturier, Nolan Patrick, Travis Konecny, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Robert Hagg and a bunch of other youngsters who still must prove themselves, the core is already there. Along with the success of a lot of their young players in the minors, this team has a lot to look forward to in the future.

 

What Your Team Is Thankful For: San Jose Sharks

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will look at what teams are thankful for as the season nears the quarter point of completion. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We take a look at what’s gone well in the first month and what could improve as the season rolls on. So far we’ve covered ANA, ARZ, BUF, CGY, CAR, CBJ, COL, DET, LAK, NSH, NJD, NYI, STL, TOR, WSH, and VGK.

What are the Sharks most thankful for?

After the departure of long-time star Patrick Marleau to Toronto, many believed that San Jose’s might take a step back this season which could force the team to rebuild. The team, however, despite an anemic offense, has played well and are riding a three-game winning streak and are closing in fast on a top spot in the Pacific Division with a 14-8-2 record. A mixture of veterans and younger players, the team still seems to be run well under head coach Peter DeBoar. It probably does help that teams like the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers are having their own problems and are floundering in the division.

Who are the Sharks most thankful for?

Two players come to mind as the play of 28-year-old center Logan Couture seems to be taking over as the team’s top player. While the team has struggled in putting the puck in the net, Couture has led the team with 13 goals and 21 points this year in 24 games (no one else has more than seven goals on the team). He leads the team in power play goals and is tied for the team lead in short-handed goals. The team has also gotten magnificent play from goaltender Martin Jones, who sports a 10-5-1 record and a 2.05 GAA with a .930 save percentage. He has also received little support as he has the fifth-lowest goal support on the year. Without these two, it’s likely the team wouldn’t be where they are.

What would the Sharks be even more thankful for?

The team needs the return to form of several of their veterans, especially defenseman Brent Burns, who has struggled this year putting the puck in the net. The 32-year-old blueliner is the catalyst to this offense putting up points and he has just one goal this season as opposing defenses are focusing on shutting him down. If Burns can find a way to start putting the puck in the net, perhaps the offense might start to take that next step and get back on track. Joe Pavelski’s struggles to find the net are also an issue on a team lacking in goal scoring. His five goals in 24 games is no where near last year’s pace where he put up 29 goals. Even 38-year-old Joe Thornton’s numbers are fading.

What should be on the Sharks’ Holiday Wish List?

The team needs scoring and should look into acquiring a goal scorer who might help get the team’s offense back on track. Besides Couture, the team has little else in terms of scoring besides Joonas Donskoi, who just went onto injured reserve. The team needs to replace Marleau and are rumored to be looking at various options, although it is unknown what the team is willing to move to get a goal scorer. A player like Buffalo’s Evander Kane might be the perfect piece to add to this team.

Evening Notes: Division Realignment, Roussel, Engelland, Chychrun

With the Toronto Maple Leafs making stops in Calgary on Tuesday and Edmonton on Thursday, the rivalry between those Canadian Eastern and Western Conference matchups are off the charts. The Athletic’s James Mirtle (subscription required) wonders if it wouldn’t be a smart idea to change the conferences, especially down the road when the Quebec Nordiques return to the NHL.

The scribe’s suggestion is create an all-Canadian conference to replace the Central Division, moving all eight Canadian teams including the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Quebec City in the same division. Non-Canadian Central Division teams would be moved to either the Atlantic Division or the Pacific Division where the Canadian teams left holes.

There would be two key outcomes to this move, including increased revenue as rivalry matchups in 34 out of each team’s 82-game schedule will increase ratings and increase ticket sales. Currently, Canadian teams only play 16 games against in-country rivals. Playoffs would also promote multiple Canada-vs.-Canada rivalries and also would increase TV ratings.

Mirtle mentions some downsides to realigning the divison, which would include increased travel times for other teams such as the Minnesota Wild if they were moved to the Pacific Divison, but still feels the NHL should seriously look into that over the next few years.

  • The Dallas Stars will be without wing Antoine Roussel, who is expected to miss tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks with the flu, according to coach Ken Hitchock. The coach added that Roussel is day-to-day regarding Sunday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche. Roussel has three goals and eight points in 25 games for Dallas.
  • Las Vegas Review-Journal’s David Schoen writes that Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland remains day-to-day after suffering an injury to his hand in Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Wild. The 35-year-old blueliner missed last night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. He has two goals and nine points in 24 games this season and has been a key piece to the expansion team’s successful run so far this year.
  • Craig Morgan of NHL.com tweets that Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said that defenseman Jakob Chychrun might play Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights. The 2016 first-round pick hasn’t played this year and is currently on a conditioning stint with the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL. He had knee surgery in August and would make a big addition the Coyotes defensive core. He played 68 games for Arizona last year as an 18-year-old.

Sharks Place Donskoi, Heed On Injured Reserve

The San Jose Sharks have lost two players temporarily as they put Joonas Donskoi and Tim Heed on injured reserve with upper-body injuries Saturday. They moves are retroactive to Nov. 28 and Nov. 25, respectively. The team made two corresponding news as well, as they activated Barclay Goodrow off of injured reserve and recalled forward Marcus Sorensen from the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL.

Donskoi has been having a breakout season of sorts, as he has put up seven goals and five assists this season in 23 games. He tallied just six goals all of last season, so the 25-year-old winger looks to be heading for a career high as he was closing in on his rookie year numbers of 11 goals and 36 points. He suffered his injury Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. He will have to miss Monday’s game against the Washington Capitals and isn’t eligible to return until Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes. Heed is also having a solid rookie campaign. In 18 games, the 26-year-old blueliner has put up three goals and five assists. He was injured against the Winnipeg Jets last week. He can be activated whenever he is ready.

Goodrow has only appeared in six games this year as he has missed seven straight games due to an upper-body injury. The fourth-line face-off specialist has two assists in six games and could put up his best career numbers if he can stay healthy. The 24-year-old winger played 60 games in 2014-15 with 12 points in 60 games, but then played in just 14 and three games in the following two seasons. He should give the Sharks’ fourth line a much-needed boost. Sorensen, a 25-year-old wing, had five goals and nine assists in 17 games for the Barracuda. He played 19 games for the Sharks last year, putting up one goal and three assists. This is the first time he’s been called up this season.

Griffith Placed On Waivers, Laich On Unconditional Waivers

Monday: After clearing waivers, the Kings have indeed terminated Laich’s contract. It looks like the end of the line for the 34-year old, who has seen his play diminish greatly since scoring 20+ goals in three consecutive seasons earlier in his career.

Sunday: Two more players have been placed on waivers today, according to Elliotte Friedman, who reports that the Buffalo Sabres have placed Seth Griffith on waivers, while the Los Angeles Kings have placed Brooks Laich on unconditional waivers with the intention of terminating his contract.

Griffith didn’t just make the Buffalo squad out of training camp, but earned top-six minutes to start the season. However, he has since fallen out of favor. He had been a healthy scratch the past two games before playing in Saturday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens. However, the 24-year-old center only received 9:03 of playing time on one of the bottom lines. Griffith is not new to being waived. He was waived by the Boston Bruins in October last year and was subsequently claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Almost a month later, Toronto waived him again and he was claimed by the Florida Panthers. In January of 2017, the Panthers waived him and he was re-claimed by the Maple Leafs again and eventually ended up playing with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.

As for Laich, the veteran forward was placed on waivers on Friday and then cleared waivers yesterday. James Mirtle of The Athletic adds that it appears Laich intends to retire. The 34-year veteran, who has spent much of his 30’s plagued by injuries, played 12 games with the Kings this year, picking up just one assist during that span.

Injury Notes: Bruins, Rakell, Weber, Wennberg, Sutter

The Boston Bruins injury list keeps growing as the team is dealing with injuries to Brad Marchand, Anders Bjork, Ryan Spooner and Peter Cehlarik. However, the one good piece of news is that forward David Backes, who underwent surgery to have a piece of his colon removed on Nov. 1, has already been cleared for contact in practice, according to NBC Sports Joe Haggerty.

Originally estimated to be out for eight weeks, putting the timetable to early January, Backes has already been skating with the Bruins for a week and could be returning sooner than expected.

The other news isn’t as good, according to Haggerty, who says that Marchand will miss today’s game against the Edmonton Oilers and was still sporting a non-contact sweater in practice Saturday. Bjork is expected to miss another week with an upper-body injury, while neither Spooner or Cehalrik practiced Saturday. The scribe says only Spooner has a chance to play today.

  • Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register tweets that Anaheim Ducks center Rickard Rakell, who didn’t play in Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings due to an upper-body injury, won’t travel with the team starts their road trip. Stephens adds that coach Randy Carlyle was vague about when Rakell would return to the team.
  • Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber, who has missed the past three games lower-body injury, missed practice today, according to the Montreal Gazette’s Stu Cowan. Instead, the veteran defenseman opted for therapy. He remains day-to-day as Montreal hosts Columbus on Monday.
  • Cowan also reports that defenseman David Schlemko, who is on a condidtioning stint with the Laval Rocket of the AHL, was practicing with the Canadiens today, suggesting a return could be near.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets center Alexander Wennberg, who has been out with an upper-body injury since Nov. 11, participated in practice fully today and is expected to travel with the team for Monday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, according to The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline.
  • Vancouver Canucks center Brandon Sutter, who is expected to miss today’s game against the New York Rangers, is more than just “day-to-day,” according to Canucks head coach Travis Green. The coach adds that it’s nothing too serious, but in his place Alexander Burmistrov will fill in for him while he is out.
  • Dallas Morning News’ Mike Heika reports that defenseman Stephen Johns, who was suffered an upper-body injury in Friday’s game against the Calgary Flames, skated today and is expected to be ready for Tuesday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Minor Transactions: 11/26/17

After two full days of hockey, only six teams play on Sunday, but many teams may be looking to make moves to shape up their rosters after a busy few days after Thanksgiving. Keep track of all the moves made today:

  • Brian Hedger of NHL.com tweets that goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and winger Markus Hannikainen were both recalled from the Cleveland Monsters as both players played in Saturday’s AHL matchup with the Texas Stars. Both players were assigned to Cleveland Saturday for the purpose of getting more playing time. Korpisalo allowed three goals on 23 shots in the loss to Texas, while Hannikainen got off two shots on goal, but didn’t pick up any points. Korpisalo played well, according to Hedger. The 23-year-old backup goaltender has only appeared in four games for Columbus, posting a disappointing 3.27 GAA. Hannikainen has seen partial playing time with the Blue Jackets this year. The 24-year-old has two goals and two assists in 12 games. The Columbus Blue Jackets also announced that goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, who served as an emergency backup Saturday, will be returned to Cleveland.
  • The Vancouver Canucks announced they have recalled Nikolay Goldobin from the Utica Comets today. With Vancouver’s Brandon Sutter banged up after Friday’s game against the New Jersey Devils, the team needed to add another player. Goldobin’s recall has been long awaited as the 22-year-old winger has been dominating in the AHL. He has seven goals and 12 assists in 18 games played, which is first on the team in points scored and second on the team in goals scored. The former 2014 first-rounder looks to have taken the next step at the minor league level and has been waiting for his chance to play in Vancouver this season. He has played in 23 NHL games in his career. Probably not coincidentally, Goldobin’s agent Igor Larianov stated earlier this week that his client has no interest in returning to Russia and intends to stay with the process, after recent defections from Vancouver players Anton Rodin and Nikita Tryamkin. Goldobin is not expected to play today against the New York Rangers, according to Sportsnet’s John Shannon.
  • The Ottawa Senators announced they have assigned winger Nick Paul and defenseman Thomas Chabot to the Belleville Senators today. Both were scratched for Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders. Paul was recalled on Nov. 16 and played in four games for the Senators, but failed to register a point. Chabot, the team’s 2015 first-round pick, was recalled from Belleville on Nov. 20 and played in two games for Ottawa, picking up an assist and a -2 plus/minus rating. He was a healthy scratch last night.
  • Florida Panthers general manager Dave Tallon announced that forward Chase Balisy has been loaned to their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds today. The 25-year-old wing has been up and down most of the season. He has played in eight games for Florida with no points, but has also managed to play in 13 games for the Thunderbirds and has four goals and five assists with the AHL club.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning Vice President and general manager Steve Yzerman announced the team will assign center Cory Conacher to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. Conacher was recalled Friday when the team placed defenseman Jake Dotchin on injured reserve. The 27-year-old played in Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and scored a goal. The assignment might suggest that Dotchin might be ready to return on Tuesday as he is eligible to come off IR at that time.

Islanders Notes: Tavares, Ekman-Larsson, Eberle

Despite the success of the New York Islanders since head coach Doug Weight took over in the middle of the season last year, not to mention the team’s success lately as the team has found itself in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 14-7-2 record. However, don’t expect any hasty decisions by star forward John Tavares, according to Elliotte Friedman, via Sportsnet.

Tavares, who will be an unrestricted free agent next season, is having another big season for the Islanders, but due to questions regarding where the Islanders will play in the future as well as other issues as well, Tavares has chosen not to agree to an extension and prefers to wait before making any final decisions. It looks like this one may wait until the offseason as the Islanders are not expected to trade their star forward and are expected to gamble on being able to retain Tavares.

“Obviously, this is John Tavares’s decision, but I think the Islanders are very content to let this play out,” Elliotte Friedman said on Saturday’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “I don’t necessarily think the trade deadline is a deadline for the Islanders here. If they have to keep going past it, I think they’re perfectly prepared to do it.”

As the team is faring well and they have quite a few young and improving players such as Mathew Barzal and Joshua Ho-Sang, many feel the Islanders are going to instead make a concerted effort at a playoff run to show Tavares what potential the franchise has in order to convince him to re-sign.

  • The New York Post’s Larry Brooks writes that the team does need to make a big trade to show Tavares they are all in. However, he points out that trading for Buffalo Sabres’ Evander Kane to be that great linemate Tavares has never had doesn’t make any sense. Tavares’ line along with Anders Lee and Josh Bailey are already one of the top lines in the league and even the Jordan Eberle, Barzal pairing is paying dividends as well. What the team needs, according to Brooks, is a top-flight defenseman such as Arizona’s Oliver Ekman-Larsson. He suggests the team put a package together of Ho-Sang or Anthony Beauvillier, Brock Nelson, defenseman Ryan Pulock or Scott Mayfield and one of their 2018 first-round picks (they have two) to pick up the top-flight defenseman, who isn’t likely to re-sign with Arizona in two years.
  • Sportsnet’s Tim Panaccio writes that New York Islanders head coach Doug Weight feels that the trade to acquire Eberle has been a big success as the forward has really started to pick up his game recently. He has eight goals over the past 12 games and Weight noted that confidence was the key reason why he was struggling with the Edmonton Oilers. While the initial intention was to acquire Eberle to be a key linemate to Tavares, it didn’t take Weight long to see a better connection between Eberle and Barzal and to utilize them together on a solid second line. That has allowed the Islanders to become the third-best goal scoring team in the league, averaging 3.61 goals per game.
