Buffalo Sabres Sign Taylor Fedun To Two-Way Contract
The Buffalo Sabres have come to an agreement with one of their restricted free agents, signing Taylor Fedun to a two-year, two-way contract. He’ll earn the minimum $650K at the NHL level, giving the Sabres some much-needed depth. Fedun was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Fedun played 27 games for the Sabres this season, filling in on a blueline that saw almost every player experience an injury of some sort. The fact that he took a two-way minimum deal is a nice signing for the Sabres, who can use him as a depth piece again should they need. Fedun isn’t waivers exempt, but cleared multiple times this year and isn’t much of risk of selection unless he shows something more next year.
The 29-year old has just 39 NHL games under his belt, but could be in early contention for a full-time spot if the Sabres don’t bring anyone else in to replace Cody Franson and Dmitry Kulikov. Though they do have Victor Antipin expected to make the team, and Brendan Guhle could surprise again and make it out of camp, Fedun represents a nice fall back option for their seventh-defenseman to start the year.
Sabres Need Defensive Reinforcements
Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald pointed out that the Buffalo Sabres are down to four defenseman after Friday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. The Sabres lost defencemen Taylor Fedun and Cody Franson to injuries—Fedun with a foot injury and Franson with an unspecified injury.
Fedun and Franson join Justin Falk (calf) and Dmitry Kulikov (upper body), leaving the Sabres with only Rasmus Ristolainen, Zach Bogosian, Josh Gorges, and Jake McCabe. The Sabres play the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night and coach Dan Bylsma was quoted as saying that none of the injured defensemen could play in that game.
That leaves the Sabres in need of at least two call-ups from the AHL Rochester Americans (Amerks). The leading candidates include newly acquired Mat Bodie, Erik Burgdoerfer, and Casey Nelson.
The Sabres acquired Mat Bodie from the New York Rangers in exchange for Daniel Catenacci. Bodie had 8G and 22A in 45 games for the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack, and 2G and 1A in 7 games for Rochester. He currently leads all Amerks defensemen in points. Second in points among active Amerks defensemen is Erik Burgdoerfer. The American native has 1G and 16A in 50 games for the Amerks, but went pointless in two games for the Sabres earlier this year. Finally, the Sabres could recall 24 year-old defenseman Casey Nelson. Nelson has 4 assists in 16 career NHL games over two years, and 4G and 9A in 45 AHL games this season.

The Bruins and representatives for winger David Pastrnak are interested in getting a long-term contract done instead of pursuing a bridge deal in the summer, reports CSN New England’s DJ Bean. Pastrnak is slated to become a restricted free agent in July and is poised to land a significant raise from the $925K he is receiving this season in the final year of his entry level deal.
Bean adds that Pastrnak’s agent, J.P. Barry, is viewing Sean Monahan (Calgary), Filip Forsberg (Nashville), and Mark Scheifele as suitable comparable players for negotiations. All of those players landed new deals worth at least $6MM last summer. The Bruins should have the room to accommodate a long-term deal on their cap moving forward as well; they have a little over $61MM already committed next year to 17 players per CapFriendly.

- The Sabres are planning to recall defenseman Taylor Fedun from Rochester of the AHL in time for Thursday’s game in Los Angeles, reports Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News. He’s expected to take the place of Justin Falk, who has been ruled out of the lineup for at least the next two games. Buffalo is also likely to have winger Hudson Fasching back in their lineup for the first time since late October. The 21 year old has spent the last two months in the AHL after recovering from a groin injury, collecting seven points in 23 games in that span.
- It appears Mike Keenan’s coaching career isn’t over just yet. The 67 year old is slated to become the new head coach of Kunlun of the KHL pending league approval of the contract, notes TSN’s Darren Dreger (Twitter link). The veteran of 1,440 career NHL games as a bench boss last coached back in 2015 with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL and won a Gagarin Cup with them back in 2014. Keenan will have plenty of familiar with his team as he is currently serving as an advisor for them.
- The NHL lost its appeal in New York court to vacate an arbitrators’ ruling that dropped Dennis Wideman’s suspension from last season from 20 to 10 games, reports TSN’s Rick Westhead (Twitter link). The league had made its case back in June to try to have the remainder of his suspension reinstated. Wideman was suspended for hitting linesman Don Henderson but it was cut in half by arbitrator James Oldham last March. The NHL dismissed Oldham back in July.
Ty Rattie And Taylor Fedun Placed On Waivers
Right winger Ty Rattie finds himself back on the wire as the Hurricanes announced Saturday that they have placed him on waivers. It’s the second time he has been waived in 2017 as Carolina picked him up via waivers from St. Louis back in early January.
Since being claimed on January 4th, the 24 year old played in just five games with Carolina, picking up two assists while averaging 13:28 per game. However, he was also a healthy scratch 12 times in that span. On the season between the Blues and Hurricanes, he has two assists in nine games while logging 10:44 per game in ice time. In his career, he has five goals and five assists in 35 games. Rattie is making $650K this season and will be a restricted free agent this summer with arbitration eligibility.
Rattie wasn’t the only player put on waivers on Saturday as the Sabres placed blueliner Taylor Fedun on the wire per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link). The defenseman has played in 25 games with Buffalo this season, picking up seven assists while playing a little under 14 minutes per night. He has been a much bigger offensive threat at the minor league level, recording 17 points (4-13-17) in just 20 games with Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. Buffalo activated fellow rearguard Cody Franson off of injured reserve earlier today, leaving Buffalo with eight defensemen in the active roster. Fedun carries a cap hit of just $600K and is slated to be an unrestricted free agent in July.
Still with the waiver wire, Devils center Sergey Kalinin cleared, reports Andrew Gross of the North Jersey Record (Twitter link). He has been assigned to their AHL affiliate in Albany.

- The Buffalo Sabres today activated defenseman Taylor Fedun from IR and assigned him to Rochester of the AHL, according to Mike Vogl of The Buffalo News. Fedun has been out the last two weeks with a shoulder injury. On the season, the 28-year-old blue liner has four assists in eight games. The assignment of Fedun may mean that Zach Bogosian is ready to return to the lineup, suggests Mike Harrington, also of The Buffalo News (Twitter link). Bogosian hasn’t played since November 1st due to a sprained MCL.
- Fellow defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon of the Calgary Flames has been reassigned by the club to their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat, according to a release on the team’s official website. Wotherspoon has not appeared in a game this season for the Flames but over the course of the previous three campaigns, the former second-round pick has seen action in 26 contests, recording five assists. The assignment of Wotherspoon leaves the Flames with just six healthy blue liners, leading Wes Gilbertson, who covers the team for Post Media, to suggest the team may recall Brett Kulak from the minors. Kulak, 23, has played in 15 games this season and has registered three assists.

The Buffalo Sabres will be getting back a defenseman soon.
NHL Buffalo correspondent Joe Yerdon reported that one Sabres coach Dan Bylsma expects one of Zach Bogosian or Taylor Fedun to travel with the team on their upcoming road trip. Meanwhile, injured forward Tyler Ennis is skating on his own as he makes his way back from groin surgery. Bogosian and Ennis have been out since early November, while Fedun has been out since the beginning of December.
The Sabres host the New York Islanders on Friday night, so new Sabres winger Kyle Okposo will face his former team for the first time after nine years on Long Island/ Brooklyn. Okposo leads the Sabres in scoring with 21 points in 29 games, while his replacement on the Islanders, Andrew Ladd, has just seven points in that stretch. Okposo’s 21 points would rank second on the Islanders, behind only John Tavares.
- Edmonton Oilers center and budding superstar Connor McDavid should win the Hart Trophy, argues Ryan Lambert of Puck Daddy. Lambert took a look at the Oilers advanced stats with McDavid on the ice compared to when he’s not on the ice, and it isn’t pretty: when McDavid isn’t on the ice, the Oilers are in the bottom-half in every category for each stat for all teams from 2007-2016, but jump to mostly the top end (including some NHL bests) when McDavid is on the ice. Lambert compares McDavid’s affect to that of Taylor Hall‘s tenure in Edmonton, in that the Oilers are awful without but the player is so strong that he lifts them to respectability. David Staples of the Edmonton Journal suggests that the Oilers need Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle to “twist the throttle harder” in order to boost their scoring numbers. Eberle has 23 points in 32 games but could have more, having missed some glorious opportunities while being set up by McDavid; Nugent-Hopkins has struggled with a 5.7% shooting percentage and 15 points in 32 game. More was expected from the pair of $6MM men to help mitigate the loss of Hall.
- San Jose Sharks rookie Timo Meier will play his first NHL game on Friday night in Montreal, according to lineups posted by TSN 690’s Amanda Stein. Meier, who played junior in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, has 15 points in 17 games in the AHL so far this season. He was the Sharks’ first pick, ninth overall, in the 2015 NHL draft.
- The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan reports that the Capitals have no timetable for getting Andre Burakovsky back into the lineup. Burakovsky was a healthy scratch in the Capital’s last game, a 4-2 win over the Islanders. He has just two goals and 10 points in 28 games this season.
