Snapshots: Gagner, Condon, Hamonic
The Blackhawks are linked to Columbus UFA Sam Gagner, by way of a report from The Athletic’s Scott Powers. The parties have reached out to one another and expressed “mutual interest”. Gagner could be a good fit in Chicago, as he could jump-start an oddly sluggish powerplay, which finished 24th in the league last season. As always, an issue with signing in the Windy City is available cap dollars. Even after parting with Scott Darling, Artemi Panarin and Niklas Hjalmarsson, the team is $2.99 MM over the cap ceiling, Luckily the team doesn’t have any free agents that absolutely need to be re-signed, so they are free to prune a few forwards from the roster to get within acceptable range. Adding another mid-tier contract could complicate matters. The team has already been rumored to move on from center Marcus Kruger, who only makes $3.083 MM himself. Gagner will be looking for a figure around there after his career season, so his acquisition would mean more shuffling from GM Stan Bowman.
Judging by the fan reaction to the Panarin and Hjalmarsson moves, further shuffling might only serve to further shake confidence in the team’s direction. This isn’t even taking into account the Marian Hossa Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) drama, which alone should make for an interesting summer. For what it’s worth, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector believes Gagner will not return to Edmonton, so that eliminates a potential landing spot. Still, there are few available centers with his skill-set and offensive output, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see Chicago out-bid on this particular player.
- The Flyers are not comfortable with an Anthony Stolarz and Michael Neuvirth tandem heading into 2017-18, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi. Carchidi goes through the entire UFA selection, including former Flyer Steve Mason, Brian Elliott, Jonathan Bernier, Ryan Miller, and even Keith Kinkaid. Bernier could be a fit, but with his inconsistency I don’t see it being a good one. Mason endured a good deal of fan blame this season, and while a short-term deal is not impossible, it’s a fair assumption he searches for a role in another town. If the Flyers wanted to run a tandem, Neuvirth with Condon could work quite well. The author doesn’t believe that Condon is much of an upgrade over Stolarz, but at 23 and with 2 career wins, Stolarz is simply not at the same level. It’s rare to see a goalie that young be able to take a 40 game (or more) NHL workload with total success. Considering the Flyers’ developing defense, it might be a wise decision on GM Ron Hextall‘s part to shelter him in the AHL for another season. Stolarz is definitely their future, and they will look to find a one to two year agreement with whatever stopgap they decide on.
- A fascinating piece from Newsday’s Arthur Staple details what can only be described as an odd non-deal. The Islanders apparently offered Travis Hamonic and a 1st round pick to Colorado for Matt Duchene, which was subsequently declined by GM Joe Sakic. Isles GM Garth Snow proceeded to move Hamonic for picks while acquiring Jordan Eberle in a separate transaction. Duchene remains in Denver, and apparently his agent Pat Brisson is not happy with the turn of events. Duchene has been linked to trade rumors since nearly the start of the season, which saw his Avalanche finish with an abysmal 48 point dead-last league finish. Sakic was rumored to have a heavy asking price, and this apparent rejection only solidifies those rumblings. Hamonic himself ended up fetching a 1st and two 2nds from Calgary, which is a sizable haul for the Isles. Islanders faithful can’t be too disappointed by the alternative route Snow traversed.
Eastern Notes: Sexton, Brassard, Mason
Now that the NHL draft is over, Pittsburgh will be losing another executive as TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Randy Sexton, the Penguins director of amateur scouting, will be heading to Buffalo to join new general manager Jason Botterill and will take the Sabres’ assistant general manager position. Sexton will also take over as the general manager of their AHL team, the Rochester Americans.
Many believe that Sexton has been on Botterill’s list since he took over as general manager of the Buffalo Sabres back in May. Sexton has had a hand in drafting a number of key players to Pittsburgh’s recent two-time Stanley Cup champion team including Matt Murray, Bryan Rust, Olli Maatta and Jake Guentzel. The Sabres have made a total overhaul of their front office since the season ended with another disappointing season as the team hired Botterill to make organizational changes. The team has not reached the playoffs since the 2010-11 season.
- Ottawa Senators Derick Brassard is progressing nicely after offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum to his right shoulder and should be ready at the beginning of the season, according to the Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch. The scribe says that head coach Guy Boucher says if Brassard is not ready to go in October, the team will find a replacement from within, rather than going out and signing an extra center. Despite playing in 81 games, the 29-year-old center had a down year despite the team’s success, scoring just 14 goals and 25 assists, his lowest numbers since the 2012-13 season.
- While most teams have solved their goaltending issues already before the offseason has officially gotten underway, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said the team is considering re-signing Steve Mason to share the net with the team’s only netminder in Michal Neuvirth. According to CSN Philly’s Tim Panaccio, Hextall claims he’s in no hurry, nor is worried since most teams have already found their goalies for the year. That leaves him with numerous options, but was quick to point out that Mason, “is still in the mix.” Mason, who just finished his fifth season with the Flyers, is an unrestricted free agent, but after a season in which he finished with a 2.66 GAA in 58 games, the 29-year-old may not have many options left to find a starting job in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Chad Ruhwedel For Two Years
The Pittsburgh Penguins have locked up unrestricted free agent defenseman Chad Ruhwedel for two more seasons. His new deal will pay him a league-minimum $650K each season.
Ruhwedel, 27, came to the Penguins on a two-way deal last summer and ended up playing 34 regular season games and six more playoff matches. His effectiveness as a depth defenseman is clear on a team who rode a group of lesser-known names all the way to the Stanley Cup. In fact, he contributed 10 points in those 34 games, a 24-point rate which would have put him just behind Ian Cole‘s production. Not bad for a minimum-salary defenseman.
Like any contending team, the Penguins have to manage their cap space wisely this summer or they could get into trouble quickly. Though they have close to $20MM in space currently, there are new deals needed for Conor Sheary Brian Dumoulin and Justin Schultz, while at least one more defender is likely on their shopping list. Bringing back Ruhwedel for such a reasonable price is a nice first step for their offseason.
Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Frederik Tiffels To ELC
The Pittsburgh Penguins have inked a prospect of their own, signing Frederik Tiffels to a two-year entry-level contract. Tiffels will forego his final year at Western Michigan to turn pro and join the Penguins’ organization.
A sixth-round pick in 2015, Tiffels put up three solid years in the NCAA and has a chance to outperform his draft status. Scoring 21 points in 37 games this season, he apparently did enough to deserve an NHL deal from the Penguins, who have had a lot of success with NCAA players in recent history. Bill Guerin, the new GM of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins has been a big part of the recruitment process for college players, and will now get to use Tiffels along with Zach-Aston Reese—if he doesn’t make the NHL club out of camp that is—next year.
Tiffels joins Daniel Sprong and Dominik Simon from the 2015 Penguins draft class, one that looks like it was effective even without a first-round pick.
Vegas Golden Knights Trade Breakdown
The Vegas Golden Knights have already completed ten trades this offseason, wheeling and dealing around the expansion draft with a third of the NHL. While more deals will undoubtedly drop tomorrow and in the next few days, these first ten transactions have set the team up for success. We’ll take a moment to break down why each trade happened, though there may be more dominoes to fall regarding some of them.
Buffalo sends their 2017 sixth-round pick to Vegas
In the first trade of the night, Vegas acquires a late round pick in order to not select G Linus Ullmark from the Sabres. Golden Knights GM George McPhee explained on the Awards broadcast that they were down to two players, Ullmark and William Carrier and the Sabres made their decision for them with a pick. For what it’s worth, our mock draft had the same split decision over the two players with Ullmark eventually ending up as the selection.
NHL Awards Preview
Caught up in the excitement of the Expansion Draft, it’s easy to forget that there is also an awards show tonight. Yes, the best trophy in all of sports, the Stanley Cup, has already been presented to the Pittsburgh Penguins, as has the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP to their captain, Sidney Crosby. Crosby also already locked up the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for the most regular season goals. Edmonton Oilers wunderkind Connor McDavid captured the Art Ross Trophy for the most regular season points as well. Braden Holtby locked up the William M. Jennings Trophy already too, as the Washington Capitals allowed the least amount of goals against in the regular season. Yet, all three of these players and many more still have a lot on the line tonight. Here are the nominees for tonight’s NHL Awards:
Hart Trophy – Most Valuable Player
Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets
- Star goalie helped to lead the Blue Jackets to their best record in franchise history, all while topping the league in save percentage (.931) and goals against average (2.06)
Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
- The NHL’s leading goal-scorer and back-to-back winner of the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy
Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers
- 20-year-old phenom led the league in points and assists and took his team from the draft lottery to the second round of the playoffs
Norris Trophy – Best Defenseman
Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks
- Not only led all defenseman in scoring with 76 points, but finished ninth overall among some of the league’s most dynamic forwards. Can check with the best of them as well.
Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning
- A down year for the Bolts was a career year for Hedman, who finished just four points behind Burns with 72, and led all blue liners with 56 assists
Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators
- If this award had been voted on after the playoffs, it might have been a different result. The NHL’s best puck-mover may still pull it off behind a 71-point campaign and an improved defensive game
Rumored Vegas Golden Knights Expansion Selections
The Vegas Golden Knights will reveal their expansion selections at tonight’s NHL Awards show, but details have started to come in on who each team will lose. There are many rumors floating around, but these are the most reputable. As with anything, nothing is final until the actual selections are announced tonight. Expected Trades With Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights assuredly have more deals worked out than we know so far, but Bob McKenzie of TSN gave us a long breakdown of the ones that are expected to happen. With some added details from others like Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch and Arthur Staple of Newsday, here are the deals that the hockey world is pretty sure have been agreed upon. To be clear, none of these trades are final until they are announced at tonight’s NHL Awards ceremony:
Minnesota Wild
Vegas signs Erik Haula to multi-year contract, forfeiting expansion selection. Sends conditional draft pick.
Minnesota sends Alex Tuch.
Anaheim Ducks
Vegas selects Clayton Stoner.
Anaheim sends Shea Theodore.
Chicago Blackhawks
Vegas selects Trevor van Riemsdyk.
Chicago sends Marcus Kruger.
This deal in particular should be subject to skepticism, as today’s news surrounding Marian Hossa complicates things. Scott Powers of The Athletic has been told that Kruger will remain with the Blackhawks through tonight, though it’s unclear what that would mean for van Riemsdyk who is still eligible to be drafted.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Vegas will not select Josh Anderson, Joonas Korpisalo or Jack Johnson.
Columbus sends 2017 first-round pick, a prospect, and David Clarkson.
New York Islanders
Vegas will not select certain players left exposed (unclear who exactly has been included).
New York sends 2017 first-round pick, and Mikhail Grabovski.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Vegas selects Marc-Andre Fleury.
Pittsburgh sends unknown draft pick.
There are also deals in place with other teams including Florida and Tampa Bay, but reports have been inconsistent on the details thus far. McKenzie’s thread gives some insight into what they could be, but at this point it is still speculation. Again, each of these should be considered still only expected as details are fuzzy on each of them. We’ll update this page with any other deals that are leaked in the next few hours.
