Petr Mrazek & The Goaltending Conundrum

December 11, 2017 at 5:36 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In Elliotte Friedman’s latest 31 Thoughts column for Sportsnet, the venerable hockey insider reports that the Edmonton Oilers at one point had some interest in Detroit Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek. Friedman writes that Edmonton may have backed off after watching the 25-year old goaltender struggle recently, something that seems to be a common thread all around the league.

Peter MrazekSeveral other teams are looking for goaltending help—Friedman himself mentions Florida and Pittsburgh—but there isn’t a shining option on the market at the moment. Mrazek could have been that star, if the aforementioned struggles hadn’t crept up on him again. Though he was once heralded as the goaltender of the future for Detroit, Mrazek has clashed with the front office in contract negotiations, and been generally outplayed by a resurgent Jimmy Howard over the past two seasons.

This year, Howard has taken the lion’s share of the work in the Detroit net, starting 22 of the team’s 29 games. He’s recorded a .905 save percentage in those games which, while not even league-average, is quite a bit better than his counterpart. Mrazek’s .888 mark is tied for fourth-worst in the league among goaltenders who’ve made at least 10 appearances. Only Maxime Lagace, Laurent Brossoit, Chad Johnson have been worse, while James Reimer clocks in at the same number.

Mrazek is young enough to improve, but his contract status as a pending restricted free agent that is already making $4.15MM is likely off-putting to many teams. A qualifying offer is likely too expensive for any team as a backup, and there is no guarantee he’d accept a lower number on a longer-term deal.

So, where else can you look around the league for goaltending help? Michael Hutchinson has been in the rumor mill lately, as the Winnipeg Jets get Steve Mason back healthy tonight. Unfortunately, Hutchinson injured himself in a minor league game this weekend (though the injury seems minor) and has been underwhelming at best during his NHL career.

Jonathan Bernier was signed by the Colorado Avalanche as potential trade deadline bait, but has been nearly as bad as Mrazek so far this year. His .891 save percentage doesn’t inspire much confidence, as consistency continues to be Bernier’s downfall.

Even a goaltender like Philipp Grubauer, who has been a potential trade target for some time due to a combination of outstanding play and clear role as the backup to Braden Holtby, hasn’t played well enough to trust this season. He, like Scott Darling and Antti Raanta this offseason, was seen as a future starting goaltender in the league just waiting for the right opportunity.

There’s not an easy answer here to the goaltending problems around the league. For teams like Edmonton and Florida, who already find themselves struggling to stay relevant in the playoff race, dealing assets for anything but a sure thing isn’t very appealing.

More NHL Prospects Named To Russian World Junior Roster

December 11, 2017 at 3:17 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Team Russia had already announced much of their preliminary roster for the World Junior Championships later this month, but had avoided any players currently in North America. Today they added ten names from various North American leagues to the roster, including several already drafted by NHL organizations. According to Igor Eronko of Sport-Express, the following ten are part of the preliminary roster, which will be whittled down before the tournament starts on December 26th.

F Klim Kostin (STL)
F Andrei Svechnikov (2018 eligible)
F German Rubtsov (PHI)
F Vitaly Abramov (CBJ)
F Dmitry Sokolov (MIN)
F Alexei Lipanov (TBL)

D Alexander Alexeyev (2018 eligible)
D Artyom Minulin (undrafted in 2017)
D Dmitri Samorukov (EDM)

G Mikhail Berdin (WPG)

While basically all of these names are very intriguing prospects for their respective clubs, Minulin might be one to watch for the entire league. Expected to go somewhere in the middle rounds in the 2017 draft, his name wasn’t called by any NHL team. The 6’2″ risk-taking defenseman put up 50 points in 70 games last year for the Swift Current Broncos, and returned to the team this season for the third time. It’s not clear why he wasn’t drafted, as he was actually ranked 58th by the NHL’s Central Scouting among North American skaters.

Svechnikov of course will also have all eyes on him at the tournament, as he’ll go head-to-head with the other potential first-overall picks. Rasmus Dahlin—the prospective favorite at the top of draft boards—will be representing Sweden and likely logging big minutes, making a matchup between the two clubs all the more interesting.

Injury Notes: Baertschi, Byfuglien, Ducks

December 11, 2017 at 1:51 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Vancouver Canucks were dealt another blow today when it was announced that Sven Baertschi will miss four to six weeks with a broken jaw. The young forward won’t need surgery, but it is still a huge chunk of the season to miss right as the Canucks are trying to prove they’re more than just a hot start.

The team is already without Bo Horvat for some time, and are still trying to get Brandon Sutter back into the lineup. While Brock Boeser does his best to keep the offense moving, other players will need to step up both at even-strength and on the powerplay.

  • Another upstart Canadian Western Conference team will be without one of their most important defenders for the next few weeks. Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien is out “week-to-week” with a lower-body injury, with a post-Christmas return the hope at the moment. In his absence, Tucker Poolman will get back into the lineup and try to prove why he was so heralded coming out of the University of North Dakota. The Jets have seven games before the Christmas break, and ten left in the month of December.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have perhaps faced more injury turmoil than any other team this year, but are starting to get health. As Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports, Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg are likely to return up front tonight. With Ryan Kesler also nearing a return, the Ducks should be feared in the wide open Pacific division.

Minnesota Wild Sign Ivan Lodnia To ELC

December 11, 2017 at 12:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Ivan Lodnia has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild. Lodnia was the team’s third-round pick in the 2017 draft, and currently plays for the Erie Otters of the OHL.

Lodnia was an interesting draft case last season, as he was buried on a powerhouse Erie squad that featured Alex DeBrincat, Taylor Raddysh, and Dylan Strome up front. When the Otters acquired Anthony Cirelli and Warren Foegele mid-season, Lodnia was pushed even further down the depth chart and used in a sort of shutdown role.

He still recorded 56 points in 66 games, but was a complete no-show in the Otters playoff run scoring just two points through 22 games. As Erie won the OHL title and headed to the Memorial Cup, he again wasn’t featured even as the team was eliminated. This playoff disappearance caused Lodnia to drop all the way to the third round, something the Wild must be happy about.

This season, he’s in a much more prominent role on the team and currently leads the squad in goals with 16, trailing only Raddysh and Kyle Maksimovich in scoring—both of whom are about a year and a half older than Lodnia. The 5’10” winger is a capable player at both ends of the rink, a trait that the Wild have been known for developing throughout the years. While he obviously still has a long way to go before cracking the NHL, signing his first contract is a step in the right direction.

Anaheim Places Jared Boll On Waivers

December 11, 2017 at 11:05 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Monday: Boll has cleared waivers, and can now be assigned to the minor leagues. No one was placed on waivers today.

Sunday: The Anaheim Ducks placed enforcer Jared Boll on waivers this morning, according to Elliotte Friedman. The fourth-line winger had only played eight games this year due to a lower body injury suffered on Nov. 8.

Boll, who was signed to a two-year deal by the Ducks back in 2016 has struggled to get on the ice this year. He was expected to help fill in for all the injuries the team had suffered over the course of the year, but his own injuries got in the way. With the impending return of Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler, possibly any day now, the need for a slow, grinding forward may no longer be necessary as the team can put more skilled players on their fourth line instead.

Boll played 51 games for the Ducks last season, picking up 87 penalty minutes and three assists. This year in his eight games, he has picked up nine penalty minutes and scored one goal. He has averaged just 4:08 of ice time in those games.

Victor Mete Sent To World Junior Selection Camp

December 11, 2017 at 10:51 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

With Victor Mete not playing regularly for the Montreal Canadiens, the team has decided to allow him to attend Team Canada’s World Junior selection camp. Mete has played 27 games for the Canadiens this season, but has recently been a healthy scratch and hasn’t seen the ice time he had earlier in the year.

Though nothing is guaranteed just yet, it would be surprising to see the team not take Mete with them to Buffalo and the tournament. His versatility and experience in the NHL makes him a perfect compliment to an already healthy blue line group, and he should play a big role in the tournament. The Canadiens will have another decision afterwards, as Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports they still don’t know what they’ll do with Mete for the rest of the season.

They could bring him back to the NHL or send him to the junior ranks, where the young defender would rejoin the London Knights in their pursuit of a Memorial Cup. Mete has burned the first year of his entry-level contract already, but is no closer to unrestricted free agency. He’d need to remain on the active roster for an additional nine games for this season to count towards his UFA status, something that the Canadiens will have to factor into their decision post-tournament.

As for Tyson Jost, who was expected to be sent to Team Canada last week, Michael Traikos of Postmedia has bleaker news. Traikos reports that Jost, Samuel Girard and Nolan Patrick are all likely off the table for Canada, though there is always an outside shot until the roster is actually named.

Minor Transactions: 12/11/17

December 11, 2017 at 10:04 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Another interesting weekend in the NHL that brought some incredible matchups, not the least of which was the Tampa Bay-Winnipeg game on Saturday night. While Tampa Bay took home the victory in overtime when Brayden Point lifted a backhand past Connor Hellebuyck, the game showed just why both teams have a good chance to go deep in the playoffs this year.

Now, Monday comes with roster moves for several teams in the league. Right here we’ll update with all the minor transactions of the day, so make sure you refresh often.

  • The Nashville Predators might as well have a permanent listing on these posts, as they’ve swapped their backup goaltenders once again. Juuse Saros is back up with the team, while Anders Lindback is headed for the AHL. Nashville has been moving the two back and forth all year, trying to use Saros as the NHL backup while also getting him the most development time possible. The 22-year old actually has had a poor season at both levels, a troubling trend for a team with their eyes on the Stanley Cup.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have activated Steve Mason from injured reserve, meaning Eric Comrie is heading back to the AHL. Comrie was given one start during this call-up, but allowed five goals to the Florida Panthers and will have to wait for his next opportunity. He’ll likely jump right back into the net for the Manitoba Moose, with Michael Hutchinson both nicked up and a potential trade target.
  • It was fun while it lasted for Kyle Capobianco, but the young defender has been sent back to the minor leagues. Capobianco, 20, made his NHL debut for the Arizona Coyotes last week but will have to wait for his next chance. He’ll return to the Tucson Roadrunners, where he has 14 points in 17 games this season.
  • As expected, the Anaheim Ducks have sent Jared Boll, Jaycob Megna and Kevin Roy to the minor leagues today. Andy Welinski has been recalled and will make his NHL debut, while Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg are expected back in the lineup. Welinski is already 24, but after four successful years at UMD and then an impressive rookie year in the AHL, Ducks fans should be excited for his debut.

Latest On Erik Karlsson

December 11, 2017 at 9:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

Erik Karlsson wants the trade speculation to calm down. After expressing that he wouldn’t consider taking a “hometown discount” to stay with the Ottawa Senators when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019, and then being one of the players asked to submit his “no-trade” list on the weekend, rumors have run wild. Karlsson wants to put an end to that, and in speaking with Arash Madani of Sportsnet tried his very best.

This is the place I want to win with. I want to win in Ottawa. That’s where I’ll always be. It’s going to be my home, no matter where I end up playing when I get older, if that ever happens. So that’s the thing: I want to be where home is. I’m comfortable at home, I like it at home and Ottawa is home. Not only the organization, but the community and all my friends as well. That’s something that’s very important to me. Then, all the other stuff, they will just follow.

Karlsson regrets speaking about his future contract negotiations, but when they came during an anchor-like plummet to the bottom of the standings by the Senators they rang with a note of truth and expectation. The Senators have lost 11 of their last 12 games, including a 5-0 pummeling at the hands of San Jose on Saturday night. Ottawa was outshot 50-25 in the game, and now sit lower than all but the Buffalo Sabres in the Atlantic Division.

Still, despite many outlets (PHR included) suggesting it may be time to consider a move, Karlsson doesn’t appear to be on the block. In fact, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun cites two league sources that tell him Karlsson hasn’t been discussed at all in trade talks with GM Pierre Dorion. Garrioch instead suggests that the trio of Mike Hoffman, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Cody Ceci represent the “three best options that will bring return.” Hoffman was also among the group asked for their no-trade lists, while Pageau and Ceci have been linked to trade talks in the past.

The biggest decision still lies with Karlsson, who has 136 regular season games remaining under contract with the Senators. Whether they can even afford his next huge contract will be a huge factor in what happens during the end of this deal, as Dorion will surely get as many assets as possible if he realizes there is no extension coming. The two sides are able to negotiate on a new deal once July 1st, 2018 rolls around, a day circled on the calendar of many Ottawa fans.

What Your Team Is Thankful For: Philadelphia Flyers

December 10, 2017 at 8:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will look at what teams are thankful for as the season nears the quarter point of completion. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We take a look at what’s gone well in the first month and what could improve as the season rolls on. So far we’ve covered the following teams: ANA, ARZ, BOS, BUF, CGY, CAR, CBJ, COL, DET, FLA, LAK, NSH, NJD, NYI, NYR, STL, TOR, and VAN.

What are the Flyers most thankful for?

Over the past few seasons, Philadelphia has quickly amassed an embarrassment of riches in their pipeline.  Even while they’ve been integrating key youngsters like Nolan Patrick and Ivan Provorov – among others – into their lineup in recent years, they’re still well-stocked at each position in terms of prospects.  That gives them the ability to use some of that capital to try to add to their roster if they can get on a run to get back into the playoff hunt if they desire.  If not, they’re establishing a strong group of cost-effective players that may allow them to be aggressive in free agency in the next couple of years.

Who are the Flyers most thankful for?

Dec 2, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov (9) in action against the Boston Bruins at Wells Fargo Center. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsWhen Philadelphia drafted Provorov seventh overall back in 2015, they were hoping he’d be a key cog on their back end down the road.  Instead, he has wasted little time not only becoming a regular in the lineup but he has quickly become their go-to defender in all situations.  He is following up a very strong rookie season with an even better sophomore campaign that sees him hovering around 25 minutes per game of ice time while playing near a 40-point pace.  He’s only 20 but Provorov is already a top-pairing player and there is still room for him to grow.

While Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek are once again their top-two in scoring, the Flyers have to be quite thankful for the emergence of Sean Couturier this season.  After being deployed more as a checker the last few years, he has thrived in a top-line spot and is already one goal away from matching his career-high.  If he can come close to maintaining this pace the rest of the way, Philadelphia will have a top center that is locked up at a cap hit that is well-below market value ($4.33MM) through 2021-22.

[Related: Flyers Depth Chart from Roster Resource]

What would the Flyers be even more thankful for?

Getting some consistent secondary scoring.  The top line has been extremely productive but they have been carrying the team for most of the season.  Travis Konecny is on pace to produce less than his rookie year, Jordan Weal hasn’t played as well as he did late last season, Valtteri Filppula has scored just once in his last 14 games, while Patrick, the number two overall pick in June, has been largely quiet so far as well.  If Philly wants to get back into the playoff chase, they’ll need at least a couple of those players to pick up their scoring.

What should be on the Flyers’ Holiday Wish List?

If they can’t get much in the way of secondary scoring but are still in the postseason hunt, they’ll have to go outside the organization in the hopes of adding a top-six winger.  Finding a taker for Matt Read’s expiring contract ($3.625MM) would certainly help to free up some extra cap space, even if they have to retain some money to get it done.  Finding a way out of Dale Weise’s contract ($2.35MM for two more years) is something they will likely want to do as well regardless of what route they go on the trade market.  As things stand, he’s a potential buyout candidate this summer.

Metropolitan Notes: Capitals Rookies, Oshie, Hunwick, Boychuk

December 10, 2017 at 7:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

One of the more thrilling moments for rookies in the NHL is when the team tells them to move out of the hotel and find a place of their own to live.  As Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post notes, the Capitals have told three of their four rookies just that as defensemen Madison Bowey and Christian Djoos, as well as center Chandler Stephenson, got the news that they’ll be sticking around for the foreseeable future with the big club.

Interestingly enough, the lone rookie who did not receive that notification is Jakub Vrana who has played in all but one of Washington’s games so far this season and sits fourth overall on the team with eight goals.  However, given that the Capitals have very limited cap room and Vrana remains exempt from waivers, perhaps they will look to send him back and forth a bit as the season progresses to free up a bit more space.

More from the Metropolitan Division:

  • Still with the Capitals, winger T.J. Oshie resumed skating for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury on December 4th, reports Tarik El-Bashir of NBC Sports Washington. However, he has already been ruled out of their game on Monday as he did not make the trip to Brooklyn where they will play the Islanders; a team spokesperson told El-Bashir that Oshie remains listed as day-to-day.
  • Although he joined the Penguins in free agency, defenseman Matt Hunwick had received an offer from his former team in Toronto, Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock told Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun. While Babcock didn’t specify what had been offered, his comments suggested the three-year term that Pittsburgh gave him was more than what Toronto was offering.  Hunwick has three goals and an assist with the Penguins this season while averaging slightly more ice time than he had in 2016-17 (18:27 versus 17:59).
  • Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk is improving as he recovers from a lower-body injury sustained on Tuesday but his status remains questionable for Monday’s game against Washington, notes Newsday’s Arthur Staple. He has missed the last two games with the issue.
