Latest On William Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are now three games into the 2018-19 season and though things haven’t gone smoothly to this point the team is 2-1. Outstanding early performances from Auston Matthews—who was named NHL First Star of the Week—John Tavares and Mitch Marner have provided more than enough offense, including leading them to a 7-6 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Those offensive performances though, impressive as they are, won’t make anyone forget about William Nylander and his ongoing contract negotiations with the team.

Nylander is still without a deal for this season and is coming up on a week of missed salary as he tries to secure his future earnings with a long-term deal. The young forward has told reporters that he has to think about his whole career, and there has been little to report between the two sides. When asked about it today on TSN radio, hockey insider Darren Dreger explained that the standoff could continue for some time:

Until they get into a real gritty type of negotiation, the stalemate isn’t going to end. One side is locked in in the low sixes, from what we understand, and the other side being Willie Nylander is still eight plus. Well that’s too wide a gap to get solved in three, four or five games. I think it might need a bit more time, unless Nylander just says ’Dad, I don’t want to hear from you for a while. Lewis Gross, you’re my agent, I need $6.4MM per year or I need this much on a bridge deal, go and get it done.’ That didn’t happen in the last day or so.

Dreger is of course referring to the reports that Nylander’s camp—which includes his father, Michael Nylander—is looking for an average annual value somewhere in the $8MM range on a long-term deal, while the Maple Leafs are more comfortable with a salary somewhere between $6-7MM. Neither side seems very interested in a bridge deal, though the possibility they come to terms on one just to get Nylander playing again does still exist.

The Maple Leafs have to tread carefully with these big contracts given the lack of cap flexibility they’ll be working with after signing Tavares to a seven-year $77MM deal this offseason, and the upcoming negotiations with both Matthews and Marner. The gap between asks for Toronto and Nylander is crucial cap space for the club going forward, and as long as they’re winning without him there is little incentive to cave to his demands. The deadline of course is December 1st, when restricted free agents must be signed by if they’re to play at all during the 2018-19 season.

Toronto will be back in action on Tuesday night against the Dallas Stars, but once again will hit the ice without one of their best forwards. While they wait for the Nylander situation to resolve itself, Kasperi Kapanen has taken up residence next to Matthews on the top line and found early chemistry with him on the weekend. There is little doubt that the team will continue to produce offensively in Nylander’s absence, but with the Boston Bruins and other Atlantic Division rivals off to solid starts the Maple Leafs would obviously rather have their full complement of players at coach Mike Babcock’s disposal.

Trade Rumors: Faulk, Bobrovsky, Ritchie, Wood

When TSN released their off-season Trade Bait List in early July, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk was ranked #4, among the most likely players to be dealt. A little more than two months later, all three players ranked ahead of him – Erik Karlsson, Max Pacioretty, and former teammate Jeff Skinner – have changed teams, while Faulk remains in Raleigh. But for how much longer? Appearing on TSN Radio 1050 recently, insider Pierre LeBrun revealed that Faulk was a target of the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer and speculated that the team could still move to acquire him this season. LeBrun opines that Faulk, a right-handed shot signed to an extremely reasonable $4.83MM cap hit over two more years, would be a perfect fit for the Leafs. Toronto has long been searching for a top pair defenseman to complement lefty Morgan Rielly and Faulk fits the bill. LeBrun speculates that the Hurricanes are likely asking for a major package in exchange for Faulk, but meeting those demands may not be an impossible task for Toronto. Several Maple Leafs players and prospects could fill gaps in Carolina, such as veteran center Nazem Kadri, promising wingers Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson, and young goalies Garret Sparks and Joseph Woll, as well as a full cabinet of draft picks. There have also been some inclinations that the Hurricanes are preparing to move on from Faulk as well, such as acquiring a new top pair righty in Dougie Hamilton and passing over Faulk, a career ’Cane, for their captaincy. The team is under no pressure to deal their long-time stud defenseman, but if GM Don Waddell receives a strong enough offer, he seems likely to pull the trigger.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen has been clear that he does not want to trade either Artemi Panarin or Sergei Bobrovsky, but as both remain unsigned and approaching free agency and trade calls continue to come in for Panarin, there has been rampant speculation as to where the star winger may land. After recent comments from Bobrovsky that could be read as implying that his time in Columbus could soon be over, many have begun to predict where he may land as well. In a recent segment for TSN Radio 1200 in Ottawa, Darren Dreger stated his belief that the New York Islanders would be the front runners in a Bobrovsky trade scenario. Dreger adds that there will be more than a few suitors should the two-time Vezina winner hit the trade market or, better yet, the open market. However, Dreger feels that the Islanders and new GM Lou Lamoriello feel more pressure to add a true No. 1 goaltender in their hopes of soon returning to contender status. The Isles currently roster unpredictable Robin Lehner, on a one-year deal, and failed starter Thomas Greiss, as well as two prospects overseas in Ilya Sorokin and Jakub Skarek. Lehner and Greiss do not instill much hope and Sorokin may never make the jump to North America. The Islanders are without a solution in net in the immediate future and could target Bobrovsky at any cost to solve that problem.
  • How long will the Anaheim Ducks and New Jersey Devils wait on contract resolutions with Nick Ritchie and Miles Wood respectively? The restricted free agents continue to hold out for better contracts and miss valuable time in training camp, despite underwhelming numbers through their first three seasons to support their absence. At this time last year, Columbus Blue Jackets RFA forward Josh Anderson – a similar power forward-style player – remained unsigned and was the subject of numerous trade rumors. Yet, Anderson had just 34 points through 96 games in his first three seasons, whereas Ritchie and Wood have more experience and production through the same amount of time. Ritchie, a first round pick in 2014, has 59 points in 186 games. Wood, one of the Devils’ top scorers last season, has 49 points through 137 games. One would think that either team could drum up interest if they began actively shopping their respective RFA, but it hasn’t happened to this point. Wood is not without flaws to his game, but has exceeded expectations and played a major role for New Jersey last season and with more play time has the potential to be even better. In contract, Ritchie has his strengths, but has not lived up to his first-round billing. Between the two, it would be less of a surprise to see Anaheim part with Ritchie.

 

What Does The Future Hold For Jake Gardiner?

Before July 1st, few people outside of the Toronto Maple Leafs front office were too concerned about the contract status of defenseman Jake Gardiner, who enters the final year of his current deal in 2018-19. Then Drew Doughty, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Ryan McDonagh, and Ryan Ellis all preemptively signed long, expensive extensions. Just like that, the situation for Gardiner changed completely.

Looking ahead to next summer, there is now an argument to be made that Gardiner is the second-best defenseman on the unrestricted free agent market as it currently stands. That was far from true earlier this summer. He has gone from an afterthought to an Erik Karlsson consolation prize. While the free agent class features many prominent veteran defenders – Jay Bouwmeester, Anton Stralman, Marc Methot, and Alexander Edler – it lacks many long-term pieces behind Karlsson and Gardiner. The Winnipeg Jets’ Tyler Myers and the Vegas Golden Knights’ Nate Schmidt would perhaps offer Gardiner some competition, if either unexpectedly reaches the market, but there is a strong case to be made that Gardiner would be the superior target.

The real question is whether or not Gardiner actually makes it to free agency. While nothing has changed about Gardiner’s value or ability since July 1st, his relative cost has shifted dramatically. With a potentially loaded free agent market for defensemen, Gardiner would have been taking a risk by turning down a fair extension from the Leafs to pursue other offers that may not have come once the smoke cleared from the major signings. Now that he almost certainly will be considered one of the top available names, Toronto may have to pay a premium to keep him from testing the waters, if they can. By the time Gardiner finishes next season, his career games played and offensive production will likely be superior to those currently of a player like McDonagh, who just signed a seven-year extension worth $6.75MM AAV. Granted, Gardiner is not the all-around player that McDonagh is, but given his continuously improving play and the boost of being a top available younger player, it is a fair frame of reference. For example, look at the four-year, $18.2MM contract that Calvin de Haan – considered by many to be the best defenseman in this current free agent class – signed with the Carolina Hurricanes this summer despite missing the majority of last season due to injury. The market sets the price and scarcity drives up price.

So will Toronto ante up to keep Gardiner? The Maple Leafs have to be careful with their long-term salary cap management. The team still owes William Nylander a contract this summer, as well as extensions for Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner by next off-season. Those are the three names that everyone is focused on when it comes to Toronto. Yet, in addition to Gardiner, other impending free agents that the Leafs would like to keep include forwards Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson, and Josh Leivo, defensemen Travis Dermott, Andreas Borgman, and Connor Carrick, goaltender Garret Sparks, and even incoming imports Par Lindholm and Igor Ozhiganov who could win spots on the team this season. This is the final year that Toronto can take advantage of this massive group of bargain players, all of whom are paid $1.3MM or less and due raises. Not to mention, signing Gardiner and the other blue liners and losing veteran Ron Hainsey will still keep a massive hole open on the right side of the defense that the team will need to continue to search to fill.

The numbers simply don’t seem to add up, at least not very neatly. It would seem difficult for the Maple Leafs to pay Gardiner his market value, extend all of their other key impending free agents, fill the gap on the right side of the top pair next to Morgan Rielly, and still somehow end up under the salary cap next season. The story line to watch this season, as the John Tavares era begins, is whether the Jake Gardiner era is ending. Another career year for the capable defenseman could leave the Leafs without much choice but to let him walk next off-season and continue to work with a pieced together blue line. Do they trade him at the deadline? Do they trade a young core forward to replace him? Or instead do they somehow move salary to fit Gardiner in at any cost? Find out in 2018-19.

 

Poll: Should Pittsburgh Have Traded For Derick Brassard?

With the Eastern Conference Finals set to continue on Monday between the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning, one team that hasn’t been sitting around for the last couple of years is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Entering the playoffs red-hot after a key trade deadline acquistion, many people thought that the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins might make their third-straight trip to the Stanley Cup. Instead, they were ousted by the Capitals, who are fighting for their life.

The Penguins felt they hit the jackpot after making a big three-way trade between the Ottawa Senators and the Vegas Golden Knights to acquire that second-line center they desperately needed in Derick Brassard. While he seemed to be a good fit early during the final part of the regular season when he put up eight points in 14 games, Brassard suffered through an undisclosed “difficult injury,” near the end of the season and struggled throughout the playoffs. He managed just one goal and four points in 12 playoff games.

“I don’t know if we ever got there, to the comfort level where we know he’s capable of being the player he is,” said head coach Mike Sullivan following the season.

In exchange for Brassard, the Penguins gave up quite a bit to the Ottawa Senators and Vegas Golden Knights, including defenseman Ian Cole (who was subsequently flipped to Columbus), goaltending prospect Filip Gustavsson, enforcer Ryan Reaves, a 2018 first-round pick, a 2019 third-round pick and the Vancouver Canucks’ 2018 fourth-round pick.

Cole fit in nicely with Columbus and became a key piece to the Blue Jackets’ defensive core and his gritty play and leadership may have been missed from the Penguins lineup, although defenseman Chad Ruhwedel did a solid job replacing him. While many won’t miss Reaves, his size and leadership also may have been underestimated as he eventually was a key figure in the Vegas Golden Knights’ playoff run, scoring the game-winning goal to clinch the team’s first trip to the Stanley Cup. And while the Penguins are overloaded in prospects, Gustavsson finished his season, came over to the U.S. and already on the Senators’ AHL roster getting valuable playing time.

That doesn’t include the picks that the Penguins have given up, not including the fact that Pittsburgh will have drafted in the first round just once in the past six years (and Kasperi Kapanen was traded not long after to Toronto).

On a positive note, the Penguins have one more year to show that Brassard was worth the haul they gave up. He still has one more year at $3MM (after Vegas retained some of his salary) suggesting he’s on a very affordable contract.

Kasperi Kapanen Not Yet Joining Toronto Marlies For AHL Playoffs

The Toronto Marlies are about to begin a playoff series with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms tomorrow, and the team has all hands on deck. All hands but one at least, as Kasperi Kapanen doesn’t seem to be joining them after being eliminated from the IIHF World Championship yesterday. Though, as Scott Wheeler of The Athletic pointed out yesterday, he is eligible to join the Marlies for their playoff run, Kapanen posted a photo of a plane ticket from Copenhagen to Helsinki on his Instagram account earlier today. As Wheeler had mentioned, there was a possibility that Kapanen would return to Finland after what has been a long year to begin his offseason.

This doesn’t by any means guarantee that Kapanen won’t join the team at some point. The Marlies are a favorite for the Calder Cup after an incredible regular season and two impressive series wins against Utica and Syracuse, the latter of which ended in a four-game sweep. There is always a chance that Kapanen joins them somewhere down the road, but the team already has a glut of talented wingers to choose from.

Kapanen, 21, established himself as an NHL regular in the second half of the season and played in all seven games against Boston in the first round of the playoffs with the Maple Leafs. The speedy winger recorded nine points in 38 games during the regular season, but was limited to fourth-line duties for much of that time. After a solid performance for Finland at the World Championship, he’ll try to nab a role higher up the lineup next season with the Maple Leafs. The team is expected to let James van Riemsdyk and Leo Komarov go in free agency, opening up some more minutes for players like Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to fill.

Young Talent Fills Finland’s World Championship Roster

Finland has announced their final roster for the upcoming World Championship, and it is filled with young NHL talent. The Dallas Stars will be quite pleased with the results, as both Miro Heiskanen and Julius Honka will be present on defense. The entire group is as follows:

Heiskanen’s presence on the team is especially noteworthy given that he is only 18 years old still, and made it over other top young players like Olli Juolevi. The third pick in the 2017 draft, Heiskanen is an incredibly mobile two-way defender that should be an impact player in the NHL before long. The Stars will watch to see if he and Honka get any time together and can start to build chemistry, as the pair could be used together for years to come.

For Rantanen, a good performance at the Worlds would be just another feather in his cap for the 2017-18 season. After scoring 20 goals last season on a dreadful Colorado team, he and Nathan MacKinnon formed one of the league’s most dangerous duos this season and racked up the accolades. Rantanen finished with 84 points, a huge total for a 21-year old winger still learning how to best use his big frame in the NHL.

Toronto Will Send Dermott, Johnsson To AHL

Friday: During his season-ending press conference, GM Lou Lamoriello announced that Dermott and Johnsson will re-join the Marlies for the playoffs, but Kapanen will be heading to Denmark to take part in the World Championships with Finland.

Thursday: The Toronto Maple Leafs lost a heartbreaking game seven last night against the Boston Bruins, failing to protect a lead in the third period. It’s the end of the season for many of their players, but three names should see some more hockey before they start their summer. Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson and Travis Dermott are all eligible for the AHL playoffs, and according to James Mirtle of The Athletic should be sent down before long. The Toronto Marlies continue their series against the Utica Comets tomorrow night.

By midway through the season Kapanen and Dermott had entrenched themselves as full-time players for the Maple Leafs, while Johnsson made his impressive NHL debut near the end of the year. All three look like they have good chances to begin the 2018-19 season in the NHL, though the offseason is an unpredictable period for the young Toronto team. After losing in the first round for the second year in a row, there are tough decisions to be made about the future of the club.

The Marlies meanwhile were one of the best teams in the history of the AHL while this trio was part of the club in the first half. While they dipped slightly down the stretch, Toronto should still be considered a favorite to win the Calder Cup. The added depth will only make them more so.

Atlantic Notes: Shaw, Zaitsev, Gionta

The Montreal Canadiens announced today that three players had not accompanied the team on their road trip to St. Louis for tomorrow night’s game. Shea Weber is away recuperating from his foot injury, Phillip Danault is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms, and Andrew Shaw is out four to six weeks with a lower-body injury.

We’d previously heard that both Shaw and Weber could be back soon after the All-Star break, which now doesn’t appear to be the case. This is just further trouble for the Canadiens, who are now 15 points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for third in the Atlantic Division. Shaw’s injury also adds another factor to any interest in his services from around the league, as he likely won’t be healthy when the trade deadline passes on February 26th.

  • Those Maple Leafs on the other hand received some good news today when Nikita Zaitsev and Nikita Soshnikov returned to practice. The team was still without Morgan Rielly as he continues to come back from an upper-body injury, but could get Zaitsev back for Wednesday’s game. The fact that the team only recalled Kasperi Kapanen today from the minors seems to support that idea, as the team only has six healthy defensemen.
  • The Rochester Americans have signed Brian Gionta to a professional tryout, and he’ll suit up for them tomorrow night as he continues his preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games. Gionta is set to captain Team USA in Pyeongchang, with a squad of several former NHL players. Remember, that the Olympics do end just in time for any players to sign NHL contracts that would make them eligible for the playoffs. Any exceptional performances could earn a depth spot for a playoff stretch run.

Minor Transactions: 1/27/18

Although there aren’t any games on the schedule with the All-Star Skills Competition on tap tonight, there will still be some roster moves around the league as players get sent back to play while the NHL is off.  We’ll keep tabs on those moves here.

  • The Maple Leafs announced that they have returned winger Kasperi Kapanen to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. His stint with the big club didn’t last very long as he was only recalled back on Tuesday although there is a good chance he’ll be recalled in advance of their next game on Wednesday.  Kapanen has two goals in eight NHL games so far this season while adding 22 points (10-12-22) in 27 minor league contests, earning himself an All-Star nod at that level.  However, despite being sent down today, Kapanen has been replaced by teammate Andreas Johnsson for the AHL All-Star Classic which takes place Sunday and Monday.
  • Tampa Bay has flipped minor league goalies, recalling Connor Ingram from AHL Syracuse while sending Louis Domingue down, per the AHL’s Transactions page.  The shuffle will allow Domingue to play a game to stay in game shape before they resume their schedule next week while Ingram’s addition keeps the Lightning at the minimum two goalies on their roster.
  • After clearing waivers (per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston on Twitter), the Blue Jackets have assigned winger Jordan Schroeder to Cleveland of the AHL, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports (Twitter link). It’s the second time that Schroeder has cleared waivers this season but since he has been up for more than a month under non-emergency conditions, he had to pass through once again.  The 27-year-old has a goal and an assist in 21 games with Columbus this season while adding eight points (3-5-8) in 15 minor league appearances.  Taking Schroeder’s place on the Columbus roster is defenseman Andre Benoit who has a goal and four assists with Cleveland in 31 games and last saw NHL action with St. Louis back in 2015-16.  His recall is likely just to keep the team at the minimum 20 players on the roster.

Toronto Maple Leafs Loan Kasperi Kapanen To AHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t wasted any time after Christmas to make a tweak to their roster, sending forward Kasperi Kapanen down to the AHL today. It’s unclear exactly how the Maple Leafs are allowed to make this transaction, as the holiday roster freeze is still in effect. The move must have either actually happened on the 23rd and only been announced now, or is set to take effect on the 28th when the freeze is lifted. According to CapFriendly, the only other way for a move to be made is if the Maple Leafs are activating one of their long-term injured reserve players, which is extremely unlikely since they’re not expected to play again.

Kapanen, 21, continues to be an enigma for Toronto fans, as he’s shown flashes of brilliance during short recalls but hasn’t been able to stick in the lineup on a full-time basis. It seemed as though he’d earned an NHL spot in the playoffs last season, but started the year in the minor leagues once again due to the team’s roster restrictions—Kapanen is waiver-exempt, something several other fringe roster players are not.

Still, he continues to play nearly a point-per-game pace in the minor leagues and wait for his opportunity in Toronto. A big part of the Phil Kessel trade from a few years ago, there is still likely a future in Toronto for the son of former NHLer Sami Kapanen.
