After months of speculation, it’s now confirmed that the Chicago Blackhawks are adding another high-level forward prospect to their roster. According to an announcement from the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk, prospect Roman Kantserov has terminated his contract with the team and will be signing an entry-level deal with the Blackhawks. Chicago made the deal official on May 14. Kantserov will carry a $1.075MM cap hit at the NHL level.
Kantserov, 21, was drafted 44th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft by the Blackhawks. He was coming off an impressive year with the MHL’s Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk, registering 27 goals and 54 points in 45 games with a +23 rating.
Since then, it’s been all KHL for the Magnitogorsk, Russia native. He got off to a slow start during the 2023-24 campaign, but he has become one of the league’s top scorers since. Beginning in the 2024-25 campaign, Kantserov has scored 49 goals and 102 points in 110 games with a +21 rating. Over that same timeframe, he has registered four goals and 10 points in 21 postseason contests.
The most prominent development in Kantserov’s game has been his goal-scoring capacity. At the time of his draft selection, Kantserov was known as a pass-first forward with tremendous hand-eye coordination reminiscent of Pavel Datsyuk‘s stickhandling ability. However, not only did Kantserov have more goals than assists this season, he led the entire KHL in goal scoring by a margin of four.
Assuming this trend continues, Chicago will be even more ecstatic about their selection. Regardless, even if Kantserov reverts to being a quick, playmaking forward, the Blackhawks won’t be disappointed in that either.
Furthermore, Kantserov continues the trend of Chicago signing some of their recent draft picks and adding some overwhelming talent up front. Already with young, top-six forwards like Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar, the Blackhawks also added Anton Frondell and Sacha Boisvert toward the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
Despite finishing as one of the worst teams this season, Chicago’s influx of young forward talent, especially over the course of an entire season, could propel the team forward, reminiscent of the San Jose Sharks’ significant step forward this year. The Blackhawks still have plenty of development and kinks to work out on defense, but the forward corps has the talent to overcome those deficiencies.

Definitely exciting. I had little doubt.
There have been so many absurd and pretty pathetic doom and gloom prophecies ever since the dreaded 4th overall pick thing… 🙄 The boo birds are ridiculous.
The Hawks will be just fine and this should only contribute to that narrative.
Bad move, as it it will hurt the Hawks’ chemistry. I heard he is a team kantser.
I’ll show myself out…
As you should lol. Joking aside managing the chemistry is going to be a very interesting process. Given Bedard’s progression and very impressive (albeit SSS) showing from Frondell I keep them up the middle and have Nazar on one of their wings. Bert also belongs on one of the top two lines to keep that net front presence. I’d expect Roman to get looks in the top 6 but definitely going to be a lot of chemistry to manage.
He did break Kaprizov’s KHL records 3 years younger than Kaprizov was in the KHL, i really have only heard praise for his work ethic and talent as he did carry Metallburg to the Gagarin Cup Championship, coming off maybe the 2nd hardest trophy to get in Hockey for his hometown team, regardless if he has an attitude problem it doesn’t seem like its on the level or near Max Comtois and his KHL team and still young enough to mature so i dont really have any concerns at the moment
I was gonna say: Kantserov? You’d think the Hawks would want a player who CAN serov!!!
HERE WE GO BUCKLE UP
You always have to hold your breath with Russian Players until you actually have their name on the dotted line but hopefully now that they do he has the same kind of impact as Panarin did. Since he’s basically been a pro for the last 3 years the step isn’t as big as it would be for most entry level guys. Can’t wait to see how the lines set up. Makes the lottery a little less painful anyway. Still hoping they can shore up the defense a little and find a better B/U Goalie and I say let’s drop the puck!
2 yr or 3 yr deal?????

Blashill and Peca are definitely going to earn their pay the next couple of years. I’m not exactly sure what Sorensen actually does coach. I know Peca controls the PP and PK, Jimmy Waite is the Goalie Coach. They’re at the point now where you just have to play the kids and teach on the fly. They need another Goalie capable of starting some games, Sorry Soderblom doesn’t do it for me and Gajan is too young still. Is Commesso that guy? He wasn’t all that great at Rockford last year but was decent when he was brought up in a small sample size. IDK. The Broissoit thing was a disaster so I hope KD doesn’t get gun shy. Sounds like they’re completely willing to take a D man at 4 if you listen to Davidson in the end of the year pressers. Lardis shoot more, Moore and Bedard stay healthy, Re sign Mikhayev, Davidson should have a fairly easy off season.
I agree. This next year is going to be HUGE for the Blackhawks and their developement. We need to see guys like Nazar, Lardis, Moore, Greene, Vlasic, Kaiser, Levshunov, Rinzel, etc. take steps to solidify themselves as pieces of the long-term puzzle for this team. A lot of that falls on coaching. Blashill and Peca need to get these guys to take the next step otherwise the questions will start coming if they’re the right guys for the job. Sorensen took over Defensive responsibilities from Kevin Dean. At the time I understood wanting to have someone on the staff for familiarity but after seeing how the D-core didn’t take any steps forward (outside of Crevier) I wouldn’t be mad if they went out and got someone who has a little more cache for developing D-men (Trent Yawney?). I think more than likely Soderblom will start the year as Knight’s backup but if he falters then Commesso is going to be given the chance to take that #2 role. The more this goes a long the more I’m thinking that they go with a Defenseman at #4 (unless SJ shocks the world and doesn’t take Stenberg) and I’m fine with that. Outside of the guys in the NHL right now the pipeline is pretty thin on D. I hope they re-sign Mikheyev. I wouldn’t hate for them to go get a veteran or two who can help raise the floor a bit. Someone with some grit wouldn’t be a bad idea (AJ Greer or Michael McCarron are two that come to mind) and if they don’t bring back Matt Grzelcyk I’d like to see them sign a legit D-man to help these kids out too (Brett Kulak, Jamie Oleksiak, Ian Cole, etc.). It’s going to be a very interesting off-season but people need to remember this team is still at least a year or two away from truly contending for Playoff spot let alone being a possible true contender.
