Tolvanen, Heiskanen Named To Olympic Roster

January 22, 2018 at 8:50 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Among those named to Team Finland’s Olympic roster today are two very interesting prospects drafted less than a year ago: Miro Heiskanen and Eeli Tolvanen. Both players suited up for their country at the World Junior Championship just weeks ago, but will now represent Finland on the international stage once again. Heiskanen, the third-overall pick, is property of the Dallas Stars and a huge part of their future on the blueline. The silky smooth two-way defender commands a game with his incredible positioning and easy decision making. With 14 points in 20 games for HIFK Helsinki, he’s already showing that he can compete with professionals of the highest caliber.

Tolvanen on the other hand fell all the way to 30th in the 2017 draft because of some issues regarding where he would play this season. Originally tabbed to join the NCAA ranks, he was denied admission at the last second and instead joined the KHL. It has paid off for the Nashville Predators’ prospect, breaking Evgeny Kuznetsov’s record for points by an 18-year old with 33 in 44 games. A shoot-first winger capable of scoring almost at will, Tolvanen could be used as a powerplay weapon in the Olympics.

Olli Juolevi, a Vancouver Canucks prospect and candidate for a spot on the team, was not selected to the final roster. The full roster can be found below:

Five Key Stories: 1/15/18 – 1/21/18

January 21, 2018 at 8:52 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

With the trade deadline fast approaching, trade activity has yet to really pick up around the league but there were still several important stories in the NHL from the past week.

Vertigo-Like Symptoms For Crawford: Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford has been out of the lineup with an upper-body injury for the better part of a month but not much had been known before that.  Now, we’ve learned that’s dealing with vertigo-like symptoms and as a result, his availability for the remainder of the season in question.  Chicago is already in the cellar in the Central Division but they are still within striking distance of a Wild Card spot so they will be a team to watch for in the coming weeks to see if they decide to add any help between the pipes.

Vegas Extensions: The Golden Knights continued to lock up some of their potential unrestricted free agents as they inked defenseman Deryk Engelland to a one-year contract and fellow blueliner Jon Merrill to a two-year pact.  Engelland receives $1.5MM guaranteed, a nice raise from the $1MM he’s making this season while he also has another $1MM in potential performance bonuses.  As for Merrill, he received a total of $2.75MM, resulting in a cap hit of $1.375MM, an increase of just over $200K on his current cap hit.

Dec 23, 2017; New York, NY, USA; New York Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk (22) clears the puck against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the first period at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Adam Hunger-USA TODAY SportsSurgery For Shattenkirk: The Rangers will be without one of their top defensemen for the foreseeable future as he is set to undergo surgery on Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.  There is no timetable for his return but he will be out for a while; he told NHL.com’s Dan Rosen that he hopes to be back before the end of the regular season.  Even though he has failed to live up to his $6.65MM contract so far, that’s still a big blow to New York’s back end as he was their top-scoring defender with 23 points in 46 games while logging over 20 minutes of night of ice time and his absence will only hurt their push for a playoff spot.

Latest On Kane: Sabres winger Evander Kane has long been in trade speculation but there was always at least the outside possibility of a contract extension.  That doesn’t appear to be in the cards as Kane admitted that there have been no talks yet about him sticking around in Buffalo for the long-term.  Meanwhile, the asking price for him appears to be even higher than originally reported as on top of the first-round pick, prospect, and conditional draft choice that they were believed to be seeking, GM Jason Botterill is reportedly seeking a roster player on top of those three elements as well.

Nugent-Hopkins Out For A While: Although it was initially hoped that Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would be ready to play after their bye week, things took a turn for the worse.  He was placed on IR and then shortly after that, it was announced that he will miss the next five-to-six weeks with cracked ribs.  This is a tough blow to Edmonton’s already-dwindling postseason hopes as Nugent-Hopkins has quietly been one of their top forwards all season long.  He leads the team in goals, is third in points, and has fared well while being deployed in more of a two-way role.

Central Notes: Schwartz, Seguin, Winnipeg Injuries

January 21, 2018 at 7:37 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

Blues winger Jaden Schwartz took another big step towards his return today as he participated in a full practice for the first time since suffering an ankle injury back in early December.  As a result, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Schwartz could be activated off injured reserve in time for their game on Tuesday against Ottawa.  If that doesn’t happen, then Thursday versus Colorado looks like a realistic target.

Schwartz’s return will be a boon for a St. Louis attack that has certainly missed his presence.  Prior to the injury, he was off to the best start of his career with 35 points (14-21-35) in just 30 games; he still sits third in team scoring despite missing the last 19 games.  Assuming he works his way back to his top line form in the coming weeks, that could lessen the need for the Blues to add a top-six forward between now and the trade deadline.

More from the Central:

  • If the Stars have intentions of keeping center Tyler Seguin away from unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2019, Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe suggests that it may take equalling or beating Jamie Benn’s current deal (eight years, $76MM) to keep him from testing the market. He adds that Dallas has every intention of getting him locked up before he’s eligible to hit free agency.  Seguin can sign an extension starting on July 1st.
  • Postmedia’s Ted Wyman provides an update on several injured Jets forwards. Center Mark Scheifele is still a couple of weeks away from returning from his shoulder injury so it doesn’t appear like he will be ready to play following the All-Star break.  Meanwhile, fellow pivot Adam Lowry (upper body) could return to action in one of their two games this week while winger Shawn Matthias (upper body), who was believed to be day-to-day, is now being listed as week-to-week.  Winnipeg doesn’t have any extra forwards on their roster at the moment so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a recall early in the week in case Lowry isn’t ready to play on Tuesday.

PHR Mailbag: Rangers, Blues, Green, Devils, Islanders

January 21, 2018 at 6:22 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

With the trade deadline now just over a month away, this edition of the PHR Mailbag looks at some of the potential rental players that could be on the move as well as a look at the Blues and several Metropolitan teams.

acarneglia: Do you see the New York Rangers as buyers or sellers at the deadline? If buyers who do they bring in? If sellers who goes?

It’s a cop-out answer but right now, it’s too early to tell.  I suspect GM Jeff Gorton would like to give this core one last kick at the can but with how tight the Metropolitan Division is, we’re simply not going to know if they’re going to be in it until closer to the deadline itself.  This may be a decision that goes down to the last few days before February 26th.

If they were to buy, I don’t think they’d be looking to make the big splash.  They won’t be moving their top prospects and they don’t have a surplus of draft picks to deal from either.  As a result, it won’t be surprising to see them going bargain hunting for a rental bottom-six forward (preferably a center) and some defensive depth.  I don’t believe they’re close enough to being contenders to justify doing much more than that.

On the flip side, things could be interesting if they decide to sell.  Michael Grabner would undoubtedly draw a lot of attention as would Rick Nash (as long as New York retains money or takes a contract back).  Nick Holden isn’t having a great year but some teams should have interest in him.  I wonder about Kevin Hayes as well as someone that’s a non-rental option.  It’s out there that they may not be against doing another core shakeup but unless they go into the tank these next few weeks, that may be more of an offseason deal like they did with Derek Stepan near the draft.  Ryan McDonagh and Mats Zuccarello have one year left on their contracts after this and would be players to watch for in that scenario.

Paul Heyman: Will the Blues trade for Mike Hoffman or Max Pacioretty?

We know St. Louis is going to be looking for help on the wing and GM Doug Armstrong said late last month that they’re unlikely to pursue rental players.  (For what it’s worth, I think they should be open to adding pending free agents instead of limiting their options.)  Hoffman and Pacioretty would certainly fit in well and they are the top non-rental wingers that are known to be available.

There are a couple of factors that give me pause in thinking one of them will actually wind up in St. Louis, however.  The first is money.  Payroll room is extremely limited even with Robby Fabbri’s LTIR opening so they will have to come fairly close to matching outgoing contracts.  Carl Gunnarsson ($2.9MM) seems like a logical fit to go but that’s well below what Hoffman (just under $5.2MM) and Pacioretty ($4.5MM) make.  I also don’t get the sense that the Blues are overly open to parting with top prospects and they would likely have to deal one or two based on the current asking prices.

Instead, I think they’re going to look for someone making closer to $3MM that can play a middle-six role.  They’ll get Jaden Schwartz back soon so that should cover filling the current vacancy on the top line.  If the Rangers do wind up selling, I could see Hayes being someone that they look for to fit that bill – he’s unsigned for next season but is a restricted free agent with one more year of team control.  If I had to pick one of your two wingers in terms of who is more likely to go there, I’d say Hoffman simply because he’d cost less to acquire but I wouldn’t put the odds of either of them landing there particularly high.

rowdelicious: Could Detroit land a prospect like Kale Clague or Michael McLeod in a trade for Mike Green?

McLeod is a fairly recent first-rounder while Clague (originally a second-rounder) is probably worth one in a trade now.  So basically, is Green worth the equivalent of a first-round pick?  He’s the best rental defenseman out there but I don’t think his value is quite that high.

Dec 20, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green (25) during the second period against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-USA TODAY SportsGreen has tailed off a bit as of late offensively with just nine points in the last 24 games (spanning the last two months).  For a player whose calling card is his production and not his play in his own end, that won’t help his value.

First-round picks, even late ones (or prospects of equivalent value), don’t move as often at the deadline anymore with cost-controlled talent becoming much more important by the year.  The odd one will go for a rental but at this point, Buffalo’s Evander Kane is probably the top candidate to fetch either a first or comparable prospect in return.  Guys like Pacioretty and Hoffman will also be higher on the priority list for teams that are willing to move that level of pick or prospect and moving one for one of them would be defensible given the extra year (or two) on their contracts.

Green should be able to fetch a return comparable to what they got for Brendan Smith last year (second and third-rounders), especially if Detroit is willing to retain salary.  I could even see the third-rounder being a conditional second depending on postseason success or him re-signing.  That’s still a strong return but not quite at the first-rounder or similar prospect level.

@doctor_perk: With the Devils dropping six straight and a poor defensive core being exposed, do you see them making a splash for a top-line defenseman by the deadline? #PHRMailbag

Count me among those that thought Sami Vatanen would have more of an impact than he has had thus far.  I thought he was going to go a long way towards helping things out there but it hasn’t happened just yet.  New Jersey’s back end is certainly a weakness and they would be wise to address it again in the next month.

That said, I don’t see them making a splash for a top-pairing player simply because I don’t think there is a top-pairing player that is going to be moved.  Green from Detroit is the best one out there and while he can log heavy minutes, his defensive concerns aren’t really going to fit what the Devils need.  Ottawa’s Dion Phaneuf is a top-four option but that’s a contract that a lot of teams aren’t going to want to touch.

I think they need someone that can stabilize the bottom half of that back end as offensively, between Vatanen, Will Butcher, and Damon Severson (who has produced in the past), they’re not in bad shape.  Fortunately, those types of players are the ones that are going to be available.

I would not be surprised at all if San Jose’s Paul Martin is someone that the Devils will be watching closely as he works his way back into playing shape in the AHL.  He has been a strong defensive player in the past and his postseason experience would be useful on a team that doesn’t have a ton of it.  He’d also help shore up the bottom end of that back end as well as the penalty kill.  They have the cap room to take on the contract without much concern and the asking price shouldn’t be too high.  Beyond that, some of the names from the next question would serve as potential rental options for them to consider.

MrMet19: Who are the most likely targets the Islanders could swing a trade for to help out on defense or in the net?

Between the pipes, the options appear to be pretty limited.  Unlike Chicago where a lot of players could represent upgrades with Corey Crawford out, there aren’t many possible upgrades for the Isles.  Aaron Dell could be one but I don’t think the Sharks will move him which is why I didn’t include him in the options for the Blackhawks either.  Antti Raanta makes a lot of sense and has had success in this division already while he wouldn’t break the bank.  If they want to make a longer-term splash, I wonder if Robin Lehner (Buffalo) could be a fit but the asking price would certainly be higher.  Is he someone that GM Garth Snow would be comfortable giving a long-term deal to in the summer?

Green would give them a nice one-two punch offensively but I think they may prefer more of a defensive-minded player, especially with Calvin de Haan out for the year.  Jack Johnson’s name is out there and unlike New Jersey, the Isles have a young defenseman that they could move in the deal which is something that Columbus is likely seeking.  Ian Cole would fit in as well but I don’t know if Pittsburgh would move him in the division (same with Columbus and Johnson for that matter).  Erik Gudbranson in Vancouver might move and he would give them a different look on their third pairing while killing some penalties.  Martin from the Sharks would fit in on the third pairing as well but do they want to take on the extra year of that contract?

I’ll toss out one other idea as well that also ties in with the question about St. Louis earlier.  They’re likely looking to move Gunnarsson and he would be a small upgrade defensively for New York although he has another year left on his deal.  Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported earlier this month that center/winger Brock Nelson could be available.  Nelson’s a non-tender candidate based on the season he’s having with his required qualifying offer of $3.5MM in June.  It’s pure speculation on my end but I wonder if there’s a fit there for something involving those two players and because of the option to qualify Nelson, it wouldn’t necessarily be a pure rental situation which is what Armstrong in St. Louis wants to avoid.

Unfortunately, none of these blueliners are going to drastically change their fortunes but there just aren’t a lot of top-four options available even if that’s what they’re seeking.  That’s why I’d prioritize help between the pipes with Raanta in particular.  If he can provide good goaltending (not even great, just good), the Islanders would be in a much better position for the stretch run and that alone might be enough to get them over the top for a playoff spot.

Canucks Place Michael Chaput On Waivers

January 21, 2018 at 5:10 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Canucks have placed center Michael Chaput on waivers, per a team announcement on Twitter.  This comes on the heels of center Bo Horvat being activated off injured reserve earlier in the day although they didn’t need to waive Chaput to free up the roster spot because of defenseman Erik Gudbranson being transferred to IR.

Chaput has only played nine games with Vancouver this season but he has been up with the team for longer than 30 days since he last cleared so the Canucks have to put him on the wire once again.  In those nine games, he was held off the scoresheet while averaging 9:47 per game.  He has been more productive at the AHL level with Utica though, collecting nine goals and seven assists in 23 contests.

The 25-year-old is only a year removed from playing a somewhat regular role in the NHL and has been well above average at the faceoff dot the last three seasons so there is a chance that someone in need of center depth could be interested.  He carries a cap hit of just over $687K and will be a restricted free agent with arbitration eligibility next summer.

Because the announcement came past the 11:00 AM CST daily deadline, Chaput won’t officially hit the wire until Monday which means that teams will be eligible to claim him until Tuesday.

Tampa Bay’s Ondrej Palat Out Indefinitely

January 21, 2018 at 4:54 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without one of their top forwards as Tampa Bay Times writer Joe Smith reports that forward Ondrej Palat went back to Tampa for further medical testing and is out indefinitely after being speared by Minnesota Wild’s Jared Spurgeon in the third period of Saturday’s 5-2 loss.

Despite having the best record in the league at 31-12-3, the Lightning have been struggling of late, having lost three in a row and five of their last seven games. The loss of Palat will not help the slumping team, especially while Tampa Bay is on an eight-game road trip, which started Saturday in Minnesota. The 26-year-old Palat has eight goals and 22 assists this year in 46 games. He has one goal and four assists in the team’s last five games despite their struggles.

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced they have recalled center Matthew Peca and wing Michael Bournival from the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. The 24-year-old Peca has been having a solid season with Syracuse with eight goals and 23 assists in 42 games and was recently named as an AHL All-Star. He leads the team in both assists and points. The 25-year-old Bournival has 13 goals and 14 assists in 40 games with the Crunch. He already has 108 career NHL games under his belt between Tampa Bay and the Montreal Canadiens.

Eastern Notes: van Riemsdyk, Price, Ho-Sang

January 21, 2018 at 4:23 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

While the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in an interesting cap situation in the future, the team seems to be content with making a playoff run and using their trade deadline assets in James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov as “own rentals” instead. All three players will be unrestricted free agents next season and it seems unlikely that all three will be retained.

While the team may be able to find a way to keep one or two of the free agents, there is a lot of speculation that the team is unlikely to be able to extend van Riemsdyk due to the scorer’s likely high contract demands this summer and their own cap situation, The Athletic’s James Mirtle (subscription required) asks the question whether it’s a good idea to lose the veteran wing for nothing. The in-depth story begins by looking at van Riemsdyk’s value as he currently has 19 goals in 47 goals and is on pace for one of his best seasons ever. Breaking down the numbers, Mirtle suggests that the team could easily afford the 28-year-old for the first two years of a deal, but complications will come after that when the team must start extending their young stars in Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner. That doesn’t even get to the thought the team might want to bring in a big-name defenseman at some point.

No matter how you look at it, the scribe writes, there is no easy way to fix the problem. He writes the team should have moved van Riemsdyk a year ago to have gotten the true value they needed, but can’t move him now when the team is poised for a playoff run. It seems clear the team intends to invest elsewhere in the future and will have to fill the veteran’s place from within.

  • Eric Engels of Sportsnet writes that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price said that he was suffering from chronic fatigue at the beginning of the season and couldn’t recover his energy after games and practices. “I was always tired,” Price told TVA Sports. “A guy who eats well and sleeps well like me isn’t supposed to be tired like I was.” After seeing a nutritionist, it turned out he had vitamin deficiencies in vitamin D and B12. Once taking supplements, Price said it took about three weeks before he began to see an improvement in his energy levels. Before being injured on Nov. 2, Price had a 3-7-1 record and a .877 save percentage.
  • Newsday’s Arthur Staple writes that while the New York Islanders have made a number of moves, bringing up players from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to help the team, many fans have noticed that prospect Joshua Ho-Sang has not been among them. That’s because, according to head coach Doug Weight, Ho-Sang is not trying very hard in the AHL. He was a healthy scratch with the AHL squad last week with finger-pointing towards his lack of effort. “It’s a crying shame he’s not playing with John Tavares when (Josh Bailey) goes down,” Weight said. “We had six guys out. It was a perfect opportunity. And Josh should be upset with himself. Whether our view of the world is wrong is something we can argue later. But the fact is, we need to be able to look at how some guys are laying it on the line [in Bridgeport] and he’s a healthy scratch. So to go from that to the first lineup here, where is he learning from that? That’s a big, big part of this.” Ho-Sang has five goals and 10 assists in 20 games with Bridgeport.

Minor Transactions: 1/21/18

January 21, 2018 at 4:15 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

After a 13-game schedule on Saturday, the NHL has five games scheduled today, including the Vegas Golden Knights against the Carolina Hurricanes this afternoon. If the expansion Golden Knights come away with a victory, they will pass the Tampa Bay Lightning in the standings as the best team in hockey. In the meantime, keep an eye out for roster moves:

  • The Detroit Red Wings announced they have recalled defenseman Joe Hicketts from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL today. The team recalled the diminutive Hicketts after defenseman Trevor Daley suffered a lower-body injury. Despite being 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, Hicketts has proven to be a one of the Griffins most physical players and many have felt deserves to be getting playing time with the struggling Red Wings. How much playing time he will get is unknown, but the 21-year-old undrafted free agent has two goals and six assists in 43 games this season.
  • CapFriendly also reported that after activating forward J.T. Compher off of injured reserve Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche also placed forward Sven Andrighetto on injured reserve with a lower-body injury to make room for him. The 24-year-old Andrighetto has missed seven games and hasn’t played since Dec. 31.
  • The Athletic’s Scott Powers tweets that the Chicago Blackhawks have assigned defenseman Gustav Forsling to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The 21-year-old defenseman has been with the team all season, having played in 41 games. He has three goals and 10 assists, but needs to build his confidence, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mark Lazerus. The move opens a spot for forward Artem Anisimov to return to Chicago’s lineup. Anisimov has missed the team’s last 10 games with an upper-body injury.

Canucks Activate Bo Horvat; Place Erik Gudbranson On IR

January 21, 2018 at 3:26 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

It’s been a rough stretch for the Vancouver Canucks since early December as the team has lost 14 games in that span. Injuries have been one of the key factors that have dropped a once promising team earlier this season near the bottom of the Pacific Division. However, the Canucks got some good news today, as TSN’s Jeff Patterson reports that center Bo Horvat will be activated off of injured reserve today and is expected to play in tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.

To make room for him on the roster, Vancouver placed defenseman Erik Gudbranson on injured reserve with back spasms. He missed Saturday’s game with the injury. The 26-year-old blueliner has played in just 32 games this season with injuries and is rumored to be one of the Canucks top trade chips as the trade deadline nears.

Horvat was shut down for six weeks after suffering a broken foot/ankle injury on Dec. 5. He was medically cleared to travel with the team on Thursday, so the activation is not a surprise. Horvat was on pace for another solid season when he went down. In 28 games with Vancouver, the 22-year-old 2013 first-round pick had 10 goals and 10 assists. His return couldn’t have come at a better time as Vancouver is struggling on offense. They currently rank 26th in the league in scoring, averaging 2.63 goals per game.

Injury Updates: Devils, Senators, Red Wings

January 21, 2018 at 2:19 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 2 Comments

The New Jersey Devils took some lumps during Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The team lost goaltender Keith Kinkaid 14 minutes into the game to a groin injury. Kinkaid, who was already filling in for the ill Cory Schneider, had already given up three goals in the first period and was likely in danger of being pulled. However, the team was saved by emergency backup Ken Appleby, who played 46 minutes of shutout hockey in his NHL debut. Kinkaid was placed on injured reserve today, along with forward Brian Gibbons, who broke his thumb after blocking a shot in the same game, according to TSN’s Amanda Stein.

Gibbons has been a success story in New Jersey this year. After two partial seasons with Pittsburgh in 2013-14 and Columbus the following year, Gibbons had trouble finding an NHL job and played the past two years in the AHL, including a 16-goal season for the Albany Devils last year with no promotion. However, he made the Devils squad this year and has already played in a career-high 45 games so far with solid numbers of 12 goals and 11 assists.

As for the goaltending situation, Appleby is currently the only healthy goaltender on New Jersey’s roster. However, The Record’s Andrew Gross reports that Schneider, who has missed two of the last three games with a stomach illness, practiced today, suggesting he might be close to a return. The Devils play Monday against the Detroit Red Wings. There is no update on how much time either Kinkaid or Gibbons will miss.

  • CapFriendly reported that the Ottawa Senators placed center Jean-Gabriel Pageau on injured reserve last night with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss a few games. The Senators will likely rely on youngster Filip Chlapik to replace him. Despite being considered a likely trade candidate at the upcoming trade deadline, the 25-year-old center has been struggling to produce offensively as he has just six goals and nine assists in 42 games this year. His strength is as a face-off specialist, where he has a 53.1 percent success rate (282 face-offs won out of 531).
  • The Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill’s gave an update today on some injured players. Blashill said the team will be without defenseman Trevor Daley on Monday and Tuesday and is the veteran blueliner is questionable for Thursday. He suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Forward Luke Glendening, who hasn’t played in a game since Dec. 20, is out for Monday’s game against New Jersey with a hand injury, but is a possibility for Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Blashill added that wing Justin Abdelkader, who has already missed three games with a lower-body injury, is a possibility to return for Thursday’s game, while center Darren Helm (lower-body injury) will not be back before the All-Star break.
