Snapshots: Aberg, Bournival, Pasquale, Glass

Minnesota is not expected to tender winger Pontus Aberg a qualifying offer this summer, reports Michael Russo of The Athletic (subscription required).  The Wild acquired him from Anaheim in January in the hopes that he’d be able to give them some much-needed secondary scoring after picking up 11 goals in just 37 games with the Ducks.  However, he managed just a single tally in 22 games with Minnesota.  Between that and the fact he has arbitration eligibility where his dozen goals would have him in line for a nice raise from the league minimum $650K he made over each of the last two seasons, the fact that they’re leaning towards letting him go shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Tampa Bay UFA Michael Bournival has retired, the Lightning’s AHL affiliate in Syracuse announced (Twitter link). The 27-year-old showed some promise early in his career with Montreal but injuries limited him in his time both there and with Tampa.  In 2018-19, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury after just five games.  He wraps up his career with 127 NHL games between Montreal and Tampa Bay (regular season and playoffs), posting 12 goals and 11 assists.
  • While he made his NHL debut this past season, Lightning UFA goaltender Eddie Pasquale is heading overseas. Barys Nur-Sultan of the KHL announced that they’ve signed the netminder to a one-year contract.  Pasquale was the starter for AHL Syracuse in 2018-19, posting a 2.35 GAA in 45 appearances while also getting into three games with Tampa Bay, his first career NHL appearances.  Between this and their trade of Connor Ingram earlier today, their goaltending depth has taken a bit of a hit.
  • Veteran winger Tanner Glass has retired and will join the Rangers in a player personnel role, reports Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post. He spent parts of four seasons with New York in the past and after failing to land an NHL contract last summer, he played in France in 2018-19.  He wraps up his playing days with nearly 600 career NHL games played with six different teams.

Michael Bournival, Filip Sandberg Placed On Waivers

Friday: Both players have cleared waivers, meaning Bournival can be sent to the Crunch, and Sandberg will see his contract terminated.

Thursday: The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed Michael Bournival on waivers according to CapFriendly, meaning the forward is likely healthy enough to resume playing after starting the year on season-opening injured reserve. Bournival played just five games for the Lightning last season and was always expected to spend much of the year in the minor leagues. The San Jose Sharks have also placed Filip Sandberg on unconditional waivers for purpose of a mutual contract termination, something we’ve seen more and more of this season.

Bournival, 26, has bounced around the league since being selected by the Colorado Avalanche in 2010. Traded to the Montreal Canadiens just a few months after he was drafted, he actually played 60 games in the NHL during the 2013-14 season and recorded 14 points before suiting up again for the team in the postseason. That would be the most NHL ice time he’d see though, as Bournival has played just 53 more NHL games since. Still, he’s developed into a quality minor league player for the Syracuse Crunch and scored 34 points in 57 games last season. Should he clear, he’ll likely bounce up and down for the Lightning as an extra forward capable of filling in for injury.

Sandberg meanwhile will likely return to Sweden where he was signed from in 2017, and continue his playing career in the SHL. The undersized forward never did make it to the NHL, instead playing just 55 games total at the AHL level. His contract will come off the books for the Sharks, and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Michael Bournival Signs One-Year Extension With Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning are having a busy day. After signing another prospect just an hour ago, the team announced a one-year, two-way contract extension for Michael Bournival. Bournival was set to become a restricted free agent this summer. No financial details have been released.

Bournival, 25, has been a huge part of the Syracuse Crunch lineup this season, recording 34 points in 57 games and playing a key role as a defensive presence up front. Selected in the third round by Colorado eight years ago, he’s never been able to really establish himself at the NHL level but can be a solid short-term injury replacement. He does have 113 games under his belt, with 22 NHL points.

For the Lightning, signing players like Bournival is key to maintaining their depth at both the NHL and AHL levels. Having players that can be relied upon to reasonably fill in should injuries arise, and take some of the burden off their young call-ups is important for a team with annual Stanley Cup aspirations. Bournival played five games for them this season, and will likely see at least a few games again next year.

Anthony Cirelli Recalled By Tampa Bay Lightning

One might think that after trading away so much young talent on Monday, that the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect cupboards could look a little bare. After all, they dealt both Brett Howden and Libor Hajek, two prospects who would be considered among the best of most teams around the league. Those assuming an empty cupboard though, would be mistaken.

Anthony CirelliToday, the Lightning have recalled Anthony Cirelli from the Syracuse Crunch and he is expected to make his NHL debut tonight against the Dallas Stars. Cirelli is leading the Crunch—one of the AHL’s best teams—in scoring this season with 37 points through 51 games, his first (full-season) taste of the professional level. The 20-year old is extremely polished, and looks ready to take the next step and contribute at the NHL level.

Cirelli was selected 72nd-overall in 2015 after just a single season in the OHL, but quickly showed that he should have been taken much higher. In his second season for the Oshawa Generals, he was named captain after Islanders’ prospect Michael Dal Colle was traded midseason, and last year he was a big part of the silver medal-winning World Junior squad for Canada. Cirelli was tasked with a checking role for the squad, but still managed to contribute seven points in seven games.

Now, the Lightning will give him his first taste of NHL hockey where he can start to make an impact as a two-way presence in the bottom of their lineup. Though his game still has some growing to do, he’s a rare prospect that is expected to be as reliable defensively as they are exciting offensively. For the Lightning, who are trying to fend off the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs for top spot in the Atlantic Division, an injection of young talent could be just what the doctor ordered.

Michael Bournival has been returned to Syracuse, and Cirelli’s call-up is under emergency conditions. That means he won’t count towards Tampa Bay’s four post-deadline recalls, unless they decide to keep him after players come back from injury.

Tampa Bay’s Ondrej Palat Out Indefinitely

The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without one of their top forwards as Tampa Bay Times writer Joe Smith reports that forward Ondrej Palat went back to Tampa for further medical testing and is out indefinitely after being speared by Minnesota Wild’s Jared Spurgeon in the third period of Saturday’s 5-2 loss.

Despite having the best record in the league at 31-12-3, the Lightning have been struggling of late, having lost three in a row and five of their last seven games. The loss of Palat will not help the slumping team, especially while Tampa Bay is on an eight-game road trip, which started Saturday in Minnesota. The 26-year-old Palat has eight goals and 22 assists this year in 46 games. He has one goal and four assists in the team’s last five games despite their struggles.

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced they have recalled center Matthew Peca and wing Michael Bournival from the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. The 24-year-old Peca has been having a solid season with Syracuse with eight goals and 23 assists in 42 games and was recently named as an AHL All-Star. He leads the team in both assists and points. The 25-year-old Bournival has 13 goals and 14 assists in 40 games with the Crunch. He already has 108 career NHL games under his belt between Tampa Bay and the Montreal Canadiens.

Adam Cracknell Claimed By New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have claimed Adam Cracknell off waivers from the Dallas Stars, while Michael Bournival of the Tampa Bay Lightning has cleared and been assigned to the Syracuse Crunch. Cracknell will now compete for playing time in New York, though it will be interesting to see what corresponding move the Rangers make.

As Brian wrote yesterday, Cracknell spent all of last season with the Stars, suiting up for a career-high 69 games. His 10 goals and 16 points were also both easily career bests, and he provided a big body that was versatile enough to play different forward positions. At 32, he doesn’t offer much upside but can provide decent penalty killing and responsible bottom-six play.

The Rangers had been carrying just 22 players on their roster, with Jesper Fast starting the year on injured reserve. While Cracknell’s addition certainly puts his name in the mix for fourth-line minutes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll get into the lineup right away. The team, who bounced back from an 8-5 loss at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs to shutout the Montreal Canadiens last night, will have a decision to make on young Filip Chytil.

Chytil was a healthy scratch last night after seeing fewer than 13 total minutes of ice time in the first two games combines. While he was impressive in training camp, if the team is unwilling to give him time to develop in-game he’s not long for the NHL. The 18-year old can play seven more games in the league before burning a year of his entry-level contract.

Lightning Place Michael Bournival On Waivers

The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed winger Michael Bournival on waivers, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports (Twitter link).  If he clears on Monday, it’s expected that he will report to their AHL affiliate in Syracuse.

Bournival had been dealing with an undisclosed injury that caused him to start the season on injured reserve although it appears he has been given the green light to return now as injured players are not eligible to be waived.

The 25-year-old split last season between Tampa Bay and Syracuse.  He suited up in 19 games for the Lightning, scoring a pair of goals while adding an assist.  However, he was much more productive with the Crunch, tallying 19 points (9-10-19) in 38 regular season contests.  He also played a big role in Syracuse’s run to the Calder Cup Final (where they lost to Grand Rapids) as he notched eight goals and seven helpers in just 22 games.

Bournival has played in parts of three NHL seasons in his career between the Canadiens and Lightning.  In total, he has 108 games under his belt, notching 22 points (12-10-22).  Assuming he clears, Bournival will be a candidate to move back and forth as injuries arise in Tampa Bay.
