Vegas’ Fleury Expected To Return Tuesday

December 9, 2017 at 6:50 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights have won three straight and are getting great play from backup goaltender Malcolm Subban, but Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Steve Carp tweets that the team’s starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will return to the ice on Tuesday when Vegas hosts the Carolina Hurricanes.

Fleury has been out since Oct. 13 with a concussion after taking a knee from Detroit’s Anthony Mantha, which started a flurry of goaltending injuries and forced the team to go five goalies deep for quite a while. Subban took over after Fleury’s injury, but went down not long after with a lower-body injury. That forced the team to call up both their AHL goalies in Oscar Dansk and Maxime Lagace. Both also fared well, but Dansk went down and the team was forced to call up 2017 seventh-round pick Dylan Ferguson from his junior team on an emergency basis. Since then Subban has returned and played well as the team waited for Fleury to return.

The 33-year-old veteran and face of the franchise was cleared to return to practice on Wednesday. Some thought Fleury intended to return on Dec. 14, when the Golden Knights will host the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, he will make his return two days earlier. He has only played four games for the expansion franchise, posting a 3-1 record and a 2.48 GAA.

Central Notes: Jost, Girard, Wennberg, Schwartz, Stastny

December 9, 2017 at 5:02 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 3 Comments

After a Friday report suggested 19-year-old center Tyson Jost of the Colorado Avalance might be allowed to play for Hockey Canada in the upcoming World Junior Championship in Buffalo in a few weeks, a new report from Mike Chambers of the Denver Post today suggests the opposite. In fact neither Jost nor defenseman Samuel Girard are likely to be allowed to leave Colorado.

The scribe writes that Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said he didn’t see that happening.

“It’s not up to me, but if it were I’d say no. They’re part of our team and we need them,” Bednar said.

Both Jost and Girard have said they have not spoken to Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic about playing in the under-20 tournament, which will start on Dec. 26. The tournament already has two top Colorado prospects in 2017 first-round pick Cale Makar and second-round pick Connor Timmons.

Jost and Girard both play with the Avalanche, although both players playing time have dropped recently. Jost plays on the “Kid Line” with Alexander Kerfoot and J.T. Compher and is still finding his way, while Girard has seen his time drop under 20 minutes after playing above that mark during his first eight games with the team.

“I’m just getting in my groove after being hurt so long,” Jost said. “I want to be here. Hockey Canada, whenever you can represent your country, it’s such an honor. I had my chance last year. Right now, honestly, I’m just focusing on playing on the Avs, focusing on earning the coach’s trust and put up numbers. Obviously, I haven’t been doing that and I’m trying not to get frustrated because I’m getting my chances and getting that opportunity. It will come. That’s what I’m focused on right now and just getting in this rhythm.”

  • Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News suggests that despite the Columbus Blue Jackets’ previous stance that they are looking for a top-line center, many within the organization now feel that last year’s third overall pick, Pierre-Luc Dubois, is starting to show that he might be that player they were looking for. Dubois has taken a step forward in his development and now is centering the team’s top line with Artemi Panarin and Josh Anderson. Richardson even suggests that with the emergence of Dubois, the team might consider moving center Alexander Wennberg, who is struggling a bit this season after a 59-point season a year ago, and might be better off getting a chance on a different team, while the team focus on other areas of need. The team might need to get a center back, but with Brandon Dubinsky currently playing on the second line, the team might have an asset they could live without.
  • Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that St. Louis Blues winger Jaden Schwartz, who left today’s game against the Detroit Red Wings after taking a shot off his right foot is considered day-to-day. Coach Mike Yeo said X-rays were negative and he will be re-examined when they return to St. Louis. Any time missed would be a huge loss for the Blues. The 25-year-old scored his 14th goal of the season before going down today.
  • Staying with the Blues, The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford (subscription required) answers mailbag questions and writes that he doesn’t see the possibility of the NHL salary cap increasing potentially by $5MM as changing anything between negotiations between St. Louis and center Paul Stastny. Rutherford doesn’t believe that an increase in cap space will suddenly have general manager Doug Armstrong throwing money at Stastny. He believes the team has a set number in mind when it comes to Stastny and it will be up to him and his agent to decide if he wants to stay in St. Louis. The 31-year-old center hasn’t put up amazing numbers the last few years despite being paid $7MM AAV and will likely have to take a pay cut after his contract runs out at the end of the season. He currently has six goals and 20 points this season.

Lawsuit Against Blues’ Scottrade Center Has Been Settled

December 9, 2017 at 3:29 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The St. Louis Blues have settled a lawsuit that was meant to halt the public financing of the Scottrade Center renovations in documents that were released Saturday, according to Mike Faulk of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Blues ownership now believes there are no more hurdles in proceeding with their $64MM renovation which had been approved by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen in February.

The Blues were sued by three St. Louis residents back in August, including Alderman Cara Spencer, former state Rep. Jeanette Oxford and former City Counselor Jim Wilson stating that the public money to pay for the upgrades of the team’s arena is unconstitutional and the city had been mislead when they approved the renovations back in February. However, according to Faulk, the group has dismissed the lawsuit and not take any legal action. The Blues also agreed not to seek attorney fees or other court costs from the plaintiffs.

While it looks like the Blues can continue their renovation, St. Louis comptroller Darlene Green remains intent on appealing a judge’s order that forced her to sign the agreement Monday.

Pacific Notes: Subban, Heed, Martin, Henrique, Dowd

December 9, 2017 at 2:54 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 3 Comments

Many people in Boston had already written off goaltender Malcolm Subban, who never seemed able to earn himself a place with the Boston Bruins, minus 62 minutes of time over the course of his career. That was one reason the team placed the 23-year-old netminder on waivers to start the season. However, few expected Subban to thrive after he was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights. In fact, Subban has done more than that. He might just be the team’s goaltender of the future.

Even NBC Sports Joe Haggerty admits that he may have misjudged the goaltender as well. Subban took his performance to a new level Friday when he saved 41 shots and staved off six penalty shots in leading Vegas to a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators. Even despite missing time earlier this year with an injury, Subban now has a 7-2 record with a 2.33 GAA and a .924 save percentage.

  • The San Jose Sharks have announced they have activated defenseman Tim Heed off of injured reserve and have sent veteran defender Paul Martin to San Jose on a conditioning assignment with the Barracudas of the AHL. Heed was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 2 after suffering an upper-body injury in a game against the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 25. As for Martin, he is closing in on being ready after aggravating an ankle injury on Oct. 10, and has been on injured reserve since. At 36 years old, Martin will make his first-ever appearance in an AHL game as he went directly from the University of Minnesota to the NHL back in 2003. He has played
  • Scott Billeck of NBC Sports writes that while it’s still early, so far the Anaheim Ducks look like they made a great deal in acquiring center Adam Henrique from New Jersey for defenseman Sami Vatanen. Since the Ducks have been without without center Ryan Getzlaf, the Ducks top line of Rickard Rakell and Corey Perry have struggled without Getzlaf, but Henrique’s addition has changed everything as he has fit in well with those two immediately. So far Henrique has three goals and six points in five games with Anaheim, while he had four goals in 24 games with New Jersey. In fact, the 27-year-old had just one goal in his previous 14 with the Devils. If he can keep this up, he could return to his 30-goal ways back in 2015-16.
  • JD Burke of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that Vancouver Canucks acquisition of Nic Dowd is an underrated one in which he breaks down the success of the 27-year-old center who arrived in a quiet trade from the Los Angeles Kings. According to Burke, Dowd’s presence on the ice, mostly due to his ability to keep offensive players from getting off shots, had given the Kings their second-most lopsided ratio of shot attempts when he is on the ice at even strength last year. While those numbers could be inflated due to previous coach Darryl Sutter’s style of play, he could be a big addition to the Canucks. He had six goals and 16 assists last year in 70 games, but has had just one assist this year in 16 contests.

Injury Updates: Ducks, Hartnell, Zibanejad, Dadonov, Mason

December 9, 2017 at 12:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Ducks centers Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler have both returned to practice, notes Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register.  Of the two, it’s Getzlaf (fractured cheekbone) that will be the quickest to return as he is hoping to play sometime next week, potentially as early as Monday.  As for Kesler, who has yet to suit up this season after undergoing hip surgery in June, his return date is still in question but there is a possibility he will accompany Anaheim on their six-game road trip next week, though that may just be to continue to skate with the team.

More injury news from around the NHL:

  • Predators winger Scott Hartnell has returned to practice and could be ready to return to the lineup on their upcoming three-game road trip, reports Adam Vingan of The Tennessean. He has been out since November 11th due to a lower-body issue.  The veteran had gotten off to a good start with Nashville prior to the injury, collecting seven points in 16 games.
  • Rangers center Mika Zibanejad will not be able to return tonight against the Devils, notes Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post. He is dealing with concussion-like symptoms sustained from a hit on November 24th although they were late to appear as he actually suited up in their next game before missing four straight.  There’s no timeframe for when he might get the green light to return.
  • It appears that Florida could get winger Evgenii Dadonov back sooner than expected. He has resumed on-ice workouts and head coach Bob Boughner told Jameson Olive of the Panthers’ team site (Twitter link) that Dadonov will be back sooner than later.  The 28-year-old is dealing with a shoulder injury, one that was originally expected to keep him out four-to-six weeks.  He’s just two weeks into that so it appears that he is ahead of schedule in his recovery.
  • Jets goaltender Steve Mason has passed through concussion protocol, reports Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun (Twitter link). Head coach Paul Maurice said that the earliest he will be activated off injured reserve will be on Monday and that depends on how Mason’s workout goes later today.

Alexander Burmistrov Frustrated With Role In Vancouver

December 9, 2017 at 11:48 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

It has been a rather rocky NHL journey for Canucks forward Alexander Burmistrov.  After being a first-round pick back in 2010 by Atlanta, expectations were high.  However, despite making the NHL while still having junior eligibility, things haven’t gone particularly well.  He has bounced around as of late and is in his third organization in less than a year after signing with Vancouver in the summer.  Playing time has been inconsistent and the 26-year-old opened up to Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province about his frustration and confusion over his role:

“The frustrating thing is you know you can play at this level and every day and every night you walk into the dressing room and you don’t know if you’re playing or not. You kind of want to know you’re playing or be sure to be confident in yourself and feel like you’re part of the team. “Then you walk into the dressing room and you’re not playing and you’re thinking: ‘What is it going to be like tomorrow?’ I’m trying to work hard but this is hard.”

Through 18 games this season, Burmistrov has a goal and four assists but is averaging a career-low 11:51 per night of ice time.  While it was looking like he’d be a candidate to move up in the lineup with Bo Horvat out for the next six weeks, even that appears to be in question now following their recent acquisition of Nic Dowd; it’s unlikely that they parted with an intriguing prospect in Jordan Subban to get someone that they plan to keep as a reserve forward.  Center Brandon Sutter is also expected to return next week from an upper-body injury which could push Burmistrov down the depth chart even further.

Burmistrov is making $900K this season and is eligible for restricted free agency with arbitration rights next summer.  However, given his small role and inconsistent performance, there likely isn’t much of a trade market for him despite the affordable cap hit.  As a result, unless Vancouver decides to waive him down the road, Burmistrov’s situation and role won’t be changing for the better in the near future.

What Your Team Is Thankful For: Boston Bruins

December 9, 2017 at 10:41 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will look at what teams are thankful for as the season nears the quarter point of completion. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We take a look at what’s gone well in the first month and what could improve as the season rolls on. So far we’ve covered the following teams: ANA, ARZ, BUF, CGY, CAR, CBJ, COL, DET, FLA, LAK,  NSH, NJD, NYI, STL, TOR, and VAN.

What are the Bruins most thankful for?

It’s not easy to establish a youth movement nowadays without bottoming out in the standings or doing a considerable sell-off of assets but the Bruins have managed to accomplish that.  They’ve welcomed key youngsters like Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, Danton Heinen, and Anders Bjork (among others) into their lineup and haven’t really missed a beat.  Add that to a strong draft pipeline over the last couple of years and Boston is well-positioned for down the road while still being competitive in the present.

Who are the Bruins most thankful for?

There were some questions surrounding David Pastrnak heading into the season.  Was his 70-point performance last season a sign of things to come or a one-time thing?  How would he respond after contract talks were drawn out to training camp?  So far, he couldn’t have responded better as he leads Boston in scoring with 25 points in 26 games, a pace that would have him surpass his 2016-17 production.  It’s safe to say now that the jump in scoring wasn’t a one-time thing and to have a scoring leader locked up for five more seasons after this one is certainly something to be thankful for.

Dec 2, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Boston Bruins goalie Anton Khudobin (35) warms up against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsGoaltender Anton Khudobin went into the season with his roster spot not even entirely secure with youngsters Malcolm Subban (now in Vegas) and Zane McIntyre pushing for the number two job behind Tuukka Rask.  Fast forward to today and the veteran has been a very important part of their early-season success.  Rask has struggled for the most part which has resulted in Khudobin being asked to take on a bigger workload than expected.  He has responded with his best save percentage (.922) since 2013-14 and the Bruins have picked up at least a single point in all but one of his ten starts.  As other teams around the league look to fortify their backup goaltending, Boston has seen theirs keep them in a playoff position.

[Related: Bruins Depth Chart from Roster Resource]

What would the Bruins be even more thankful for?

Some good fortune in the health department.  No fewer than 15 different players have missed time due to injury through the first two months of the season which has Boston near the top of the league in man-games missed.  If there is any consolation, they’ve played the fewest games so far so the impact of the injuries could certainly have been worse than it already has been but knowing they have the most games still to play, a full lineup (or something even close to one) would certainly be a big boost for them the rest of the way.

What should be on the Bruins’ Holiday Wish List?

For starters, some cap space would certainly be beneficial.  They presently project to have just under $58K in room at the end of the season per CapFriendly, which doesn’t give them enough to do much of anything (and with Adam McQuaid set to return soon, LTIR won’t be in effect much longer).  If they can get back to a fully-healthy roster, they’ll free up enough space to be able to make a small addition but it will most likely be of the depth variety.  It wouldn’t be surprising to see them look to add a veteran winger like they did with Drew Stafford last season or an extra defender to hedge against injuries which is something that crept up in the playoffs last year.  With the way the roster currently stands, they won’t be able to do much more than that though.

Minor Transactions: 12/9/17

December 9, 2017 at 9:33 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As usual, Saturday is set to be a busy one with 24 teams in action which means there should be a fair bit of roster juggling throughout the day.  We’ll keep tabs on those moves here.

  • The Coyotes have loaned goaltender Marek Langhamer to HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Extraliga, reports Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports (Twitter link). This alleviates a logjam between the pipes at the AHL level with Adin Hill and Hunter Miska already with their AHL affiliate in Tucson plus veteran Michael Leighton who is on loan to Vegas’ farm team in Chicago.  Arizona will retain Langhamer’s rights while he is on loan.
  • Pittsburgh has flipped depth defensemen, announcing that they have assigned Frank Corrado to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL while recalling blueliner Kevin Czuczman. Corrado had only been recalled on Thursday and didn’t see any action since then.  As for Czuczman, he leads the Baby Penguins in points by a defender with 14 through 22 games.  He last saw NHL action back in 2013-14 with the Islanders, who had signed and played him immediately after his collegiate season ended.
  • Sonny Milano’s back-and-forth season continues.  The Blue Jackets announced that they have recalled the winger from Cleveland of the AHL.  He has spent the bulk of the season with Columbus, tallying ten points in 24 games while adding a pair of assists in two minor league contests.

Oilers Notes: Strome, Goaltending, Davidson

December 9, 2017 at 8:24 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

It’s safe to say that Edmonton’s offseason trade of Jordan Eberle to the Islanders for Ryan Strome hasn’t worked out as well as the Oilers had hoped.  Eberle is off to a strong start with his new team, posting 21 points (12-9-21) in 28 games.  However, Strome hasn’t fared anywhere near as well, collecting only 11 points (4-7-12) over that same stretch.  He has found himself moved down the lineup at times and as Postmedia’s Jim Matheson notes, he could be out of the lineup entirely tonight against Montreal.  He was in a rotation of wingers in practice on Friday (which isn’t too ideal for someone who has been deployed as a center for the majority of the season) and a final decision on whether or not he’ll suit up will come later in the day.  The fact it has even come to this further cements the thought that this trade is one that GM Peter Chiarelli may want a mulligan on.

More from Edmonton:

  • David Staples, also of Postmedia, argues that the Oilers need to make a move to bring in another goaltender as soon as possible. Presently, backup Laurent Brossoit is getting the starts with Cam Talbot on the shelf with an upper-body injury but he has not fared well, posting a save percentage of just .871 in his first three appearances as the interim starter.  With Edmonton already eight points out of a playoff spot and Brossoit struggling, another week or two without Talbot could prove to be devastating in the standings so bringing in someone that’s a bit more proven would certainly be beneficial.  Our Zach Leach took a look at some of their options earlier this week.
  • Recently reacquired blueliner Brandon Davidson is likely to make his first appearance against his former team in Montreal, notes Paul Gazzola on the Oilers’ team website. Davidson was claimed off waivers a week ago today but has been a healthy scratch for the two games since then.  Presumably, it would be Yohann Auvitu ceding his spot after playing less than 11 minutes on Wednesday night.

Snapshots: Simmonds, Palmieri, Coyotes

December 8, 2017 at 8:20 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 6 Comments

While Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds has been mentioned in trade speculation lately, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman cautioned on a radio appearance on Sportsnet 960 (audio link) that it’s unlikely at this point that he will be dealt.  For starters, he has been playing through an injury which certainly doesn’t help his value.  Friedman also notes that some teams believe that Philadelphia will do everything they can to avoid trading him which would make a move like that more of a last resort.

Simmonds is signed through next season at a very club-friendly $3.975MM cap hit (with a 12-team no-trade clause).  He’s bound to get a major raise on the open market and with the Flyers having Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek on significant deals up front long-term, there’s no guarantee that the team will be able to afford to keep him around on a big-ticket contract as well which presents Philly with a case to move him before then.  Despite not being fully healthy, Simmonds is still off to a good start to his season with 18 points (10-8-18) through 29 games.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Devils winger Kyle Palmieri has resumed skating in recent days as he continues to recover from a broken foot, notes Andrew Gross of The Record. The injury was sustained on November 20th with a recovery timeline of four-to-six weeks so it appears he’ll have a chance to return to the lineup near the shorter end of that span.  When he has been healthy this season, Palmieri has been quite effective, notching five goals and four assists in 13 games.
  • The Coyotes have flipped goaltending coaches between their NHL and AHL affiliates, reports Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports. Jon Elkin, who has been Arizona’s goalie coach since being hired in the summer of 2015, will now oversee their minor league netminders while Corey Schwab, a veteran of 147 career NHL appearances, takes over on the NHL side.
