Senators Notes: Gaudette, Reinhardt, Subban

The Senators assigned forwards Adam Gaudette and Cole Reinhardt to AHL Belleville today, per a team announcement. It’s just a short-term move to accrue cap space and delay both players’ temporary waiver exemption, relays Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia. They should be back on the active roster before tomorrow’s game against the Blues.

It’s the second time Gaudette’s been involved in such a transaction this year. He was placed on waivers the day before opening night rosters were due but was never sent to the minors, sticking around to begin the season. He was assigned to Belleville on Oct. 15 before being recalled the following day without reporting to the minor-league club. The 28-year-old has appeared in seven of Ottawa’s eight contests this season, scoring twice and adding an assist with a +1 rating. He can play in three more games or remain on the active roster for nine more days before he needs waivers again to head to the minors, so his temporary waiver exemption will likely expire by mid-November.

Reinhardt, 24, has suited up in the Sens’ last two games with Shane Pinto now out week-to-week with an undisclosed injury. The 2020 sixth-round pick recorded an assist in his season debut against the Golden Knights on Friday and is averaging just 7:03 across his pair of showings, adding two blocks and five hits. The left winger also has five points in three games with the B-Sens this year. Like Gaudette, he cleared waivers during the preseason. He was added to the NHL roster for a pair of days earlier this month for injury insurance, so combining that with this most recent recall, he’s been on the NHL roster for five days. That gives him 25 days on the active roster or eight NHL appearances before he needs waivers again to head back to Belleville.

Neither Pinto nor David Perron, who’s out on personal leave, have been placed on injured reserve or non-roster. That leaves them with only 12 healthy forwards with no flexibility when Gaudette and Reinhardt come back up. Perron and Pinto aren’t expected back by tomorrow’s game, so Gaudette and Reinhardt should once again play fourth-line roles against the Blues.

Additionally, the Sens added some goaltending depth with Belleville signing goaltender Malcolm Subban to an AHL contract. The 30-year-old had previously been on a professional tryout with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, but didn’t get into a game and was released over the weekend. The 2012 first-round pick last played in the NHL with the Blue Jackets last season, stopping 32 of 35 shots in a loss to the Hurricanes on April 7.

Subban is essentially now the No. 5 option on Ottawa’s goalie depth chart. He’ll split the Belleville crease with Leevi Merilainen while Mads Søgaard, the Sens’ third-stringer, is out with an injury.

Atlantic Notes: Ekblad, Barkov, Pacioretty, Subban

The Panthers have been busy on the extension front early on this season.  They signed Carter Verhaeghe on opening night, recently inked Paul Maurice to a new deal, and are in discussions on an extension with Sam Bennett.  However, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, it has been quiet when it comes to potential talks with their other prominent UFA, defenseman Aaron Ekblad.  The 28-year-old is in the final season of what was a record-setting contract at the time for a blueliner coming off an entry-level deal, paying him $7.5MM per season.  Despite being banged up with injuries the last few years, it stands to reason that a new pact should come in somewhat close to this one which Florida might not be able to afford if they keep Bennett.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division:

  • Still with Florida, center Aleksander Barkov took part in a full practice for the first time since sustaining his lower-body injury, one that’s believed to be a high-ankle sprain, notes George Richards of Florida Hockey Now. While he has been ruled out for tonight’s game, the 29-year-old could be cleared to return on Monday against Buffalo.  Barkov has potted at least 68 points in the last three seasons and has an assist in two games so far in 2024-25.
  • Maple Leafs winger Max Pacioretty will return from his lower-body injury tonight versus Boston, relays TSN’s Mark Masters (Twitter link). The 35-year-old has played in five games so far this season, scoring twice.  Pacioretty is owed a bonus of just over $313K when he reaches the 10-game mark and even with Toronto not playing him full-time, he should be able to hit that over the next few weeks as long as he stays healthy.
  • The Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings, announced that they’ve released goaltender Malcolm Subban from his PTO deal. The 30-year-old played in 35 AHL games last season, posting a 3.12 GAA and a .901 SV%.  Subban also has played in parts of nine NHL seasons spanning 87 appearances where he has a 3.10 GAA and a .898 SV% and will now look to catch on elsewhere.

Blue Jackets Notes: Fix-Wolansky, Subban, Jenner

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that they’ve assigned forward Trey Fix-Wolansky to the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old played in a career-high 11 NHL games this season with the Blue Jackets, posting two goals and an assist. The former seventh-round pick averaged a shade under 11 minutes of ice time per game and appeared to gain more confidence as the season went on. In his final appearance two nights ago he potted two goals against the Predators in 10:49 of ice time.

An undersized forward at 5’7” tall, Fix-Wolansky has been a prolific AHL scorer for the past two seasons but has been unable to carry it over to the NHL level. In 26 career NHL games, the Edmonton, Alberta native has four goals and two assists, numbers that are in stark contrast to his AHL numbers where he has 84 goals and 113 assists in 221 games.

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have also assigned goaltender Malcolm Subban to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters. The 30-year-old netminder is a veteran of 87 NHL games split over eight seasons but has appeared in just five NHL games over the last three years including one this season. The Toronto, Ontario native is with his fifth NHL franchise and has appeared in 206 AHL games posting a record of 89-78-29 with a 2.65 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
  • Aaron Portzline of The Athletic is reporting that Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner was back at team practice today as he looks to return from personal leave. It was Jenner’s first time on the ice since he and his wife Maggie announced that their son Dawson was tragically stillborn. Jenner has missed the Blue Jackets last six games but could be available for the team’s final regular season game tomorrow night against the Carolina Hurricanes. The 30-year-old has spent his entire 11-year NHL career with the Blue Jackets and is the franchise’s all-time leader in games played with 715.

Blue Jackets Recall Two, Assign Trey Fix-Wolansky To AHL

On the heels of providing several injury updates earlier in the day, the Blue Jackets have made several roster moves.  The team announced that they’ve brought up defenseman Nick Blankenburg and goaltender Malcolm Subban on an emergency basis while winger Trey Fix-Wolansky was re-assigned to AHL Cleveland.

Blankenburg is in his third season with Columbus after signing as an undrafted free agent and has seen NHL action in all three years including six appearances this season where he has been held off the scoresheet.  The 25-year-old has battled back issues in the minors which has limited him to just 21 games with the Monsters despite spending most of the season at that level.  He has fared well offensively in the AHL, picking up 13 points.  The pending restricted free agent won’t be waiver-exempt next year and is expected to push for a full-time spot next season.

As for Subban, he was acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline to give them some extra organizational depth between the pipes down the stretch.  The 30-year-old has a 3.12 GAA and .901 SV% in 35 AHL contests so far this season.  Subban, a pending unrestricted free agent, also has 86 career NHL appearances under his belt but with Elvis Merzlikins and Vadim Tarasov unavailable, Jet Greaves will likely serve as the starter in the short term.

Fix-Wolansky, meanwhile, was recalled on an emergency basis yesterday but with Johnny Gaudreau expected to return Saturday, emergency conditions no longer exist so he had to be sent down.  The 24-year-old is averaging more than a point per game in the minors for the second straight year, collecting 24 goals and 34 assists in 53 games so far.  Fix-Wolansky has an assist in ten games with the Blue Jackets as well.  He’s signed on a two-way deal through the 2024-25 season.

Blue Jackets Acquire Malcolm Subban

The Blue Jackets acquired minor-league goaltender Malcolm Subban from the Blues in exchange for future consideration, the team announced. Subban, who was playing for the Blues’ AHL affiliate in Springfield, will now report directly to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.

Subban, 30, was a first-round pick of the Bruins back in 2012 but has now settled in as a minor-league starter. After spending the last two seasons in the Sabres organization, Subban inked a one-year, two-way deal ($775K NHL/$450K AHL) with the Blues in free agency last summer to provide short-lived competition to youngster Joel Hofer in the backup role to Jordan Binnington. He hasn’t made an NHL appearance since January 2022.

He’s been half-decent with Springfield this year, recording a .907 SV% and an 11-14-4 record in 31 games. However, he’s been outplayed by the younger Vadim Zherenko, who has an 11-7-2 record and .913 SV% in 21 games. As such, the Thunderbirds are no longer relying on him to be a bona fide AHL starter, and he’ll finish out the season as a veteran presence in Cleveland to aid in their stretch run while providing a veteran call-up option for Columbus if injuries strike Elvis Merzļikins or Daniil Tarasov in the last few weeks of the season.

Subban will be a UFA this summer. This trade will likely be completed in a separate minor-league trade, with Cleveland sending an AHL-contracted player to Springfield as compensation.

Waivers: 10/08/23

Oct. 9: Four players on this list were claimed today: A.J. Greer (Calgary), John Ludvig (Pittsburgh), Ivan Prosvetov (Colorado), and Lassi Thomson (Ottawa). All others have cleared and are expected to be assigned to their team’s respective AHL affiliates, aside from Boyd, who PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports remains on the Coyotes’ active roster for now.

Oct. 8: It’s expected to be a busy day on the waiver wire, as NHL teams are making their final adjustments to the roster they’ll bring into the start of the 2023-24 season. There have already been numerous notable names exposed to the waiver wire thus far this preseason, and that list could only expand today. All players from yesterday’s waiver wire have cleared.

The big surprise here out of Arizona regards Boyd. The versatile 30-year-old veteran doesn’t have an exorbitant contract (just $1.75MM through the end of the season) and has scored 69 points across the last two seasons.

He’s been something of a breakout player for the Coyotes as his 17-goal, 35-point 2022-23 was far and away his best season in his career, so it’s definitely a surprise to see him exposed on waivers.

For Anaheim, the move to waive Stalock likely means that Lukáš Dostál has won the Ducks’ backup goalie job behind John Gibson, as should Stalock clear the Ducks will have the option to send him down to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls.

In Edmonton, it comes as a little bit of a surprise to see Lavioe waived. The 23-year-old power forward was drafted just outside of the 2019 first round, and took a real step forward in his development last season. He became a genuinely impactful AHLer, scoring 25 goals and 45 points. He’s a name to watch in terms of players with the potential to be claimed out of this group.

Anderson-Dolan finally made the NHL on an extended basis last season, and scored 12 points in 46 games. He even got some playoff action under his belt, but seeing as he was a near-point-per-game scorer in his last season in the AHL, it seems the Kings could prefer to have him start the season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Rosen appears the likeliest candidate from the Blues’ group of waived players to be of interest to other teams, as he’s owed just a $762.5k cap hit this season and impressed in 49 games of NHL action last season. He scored 18 points in that span and could interest teams in need of some additional defensive help.

Out of Tampa is Bogosian, and it’s reported that the Lightning are hoping to put the veteran blueliner in a position to land on another team where he can play a bigger role than he’d be offered in Tampa. The 33-year-old won a Stanley Cup for the Lightning and it seems that the organization is looking to do right by the player while also turning to other options to staff their defense.

One of the biggest names on waivers comes out of Toronto, as Jones played in 48 games last season but now finds himself exposed to 31 other clubs. With an $875k cap hit, the veteran netminder could end up claimed by teams in need of instant goaltending support, such as the Lightning who don’t have much depth after the injury to superstar Andrei Vasilevskiy.

St. Louis Blues Sign Four Players

The St. Louis Blues have signed four players, according to a team announcement. They are: forward Mackenzie MacEachern (two years, one-way), defenders Joshua Jacobs and Wyatt Kalynuk (one year, two-way), and netminder Malcolm Subban. (one year, two-way)

MacEachern’s AAV on his deal is a league-minimum $775K, and one would assume it’s a similar arrangement for the other three though there is no confirmation at this time as the team did not release the financial terms of the moves.

MacEachern is the most experienced of the group with 119 career NHL appearances, all coming in his first stint with St. Louis.  However, the 29-year-old spent last season in Carolina’s system on a two-way deal.  While he only saw AHL action during the regular season (collecting 30 points in 37 games), MacEachern was brought up by the Hurricanes for the playoffs and got into eight games, picking up a goal and an assist.

Jacobs, meanwhile, last saw NHL action back in 2019-20 with New Jersey and has just three appearances at the top level under his belt.  However, he has been a capable AHL blueliner for several years now with over 300 games played at that level.  Last season, he had ten points and 18 penalty minutes while suiting up for Colorado’s AHL affiliate.

As for Kalynuk, he looked like he could be a part of Chicago’s future when he put up nine points in 21 games back in 2020-21 but has been limited to just five NHL games since then.  Last season, the 26-year-old spent time with AHL affiliates for the Rangers and Canucks, combining to put up 18 points in 61 games.

Subban is set to take over as the new third-string option for St. Louis with Joel Hofer set to serve as Jordan Binnington’s backup next season.  The 29-year-old didn’t see an NHL action last season for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.  Instead, he was the starter at AHL Rochester, putting up a 2.94 GAA and a .903 SV% in 39 games while also playing in 14 playoff contests.

All four players are set to serve as depth options for St. Louis next season with MacEachern, Kalynuk, and Subban projected to be among the top recall options when someone at their respective positions is injured.

Atlantic Notes: Copp, Subban, Bruins

Rosters for the upcoming World Championships are likely to be revealed in the coming days but Red Wings center Andrew Copp won’t on the one for Team USA, notes Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.  Copp decided to decline the offer to let his body heal up, allowing him to be fully healthy heading into training camp.  Although the 28-year-old played in every game this season, he missed training camp due to his recovery from offseason surgery which resulted in a slow start and a quieter-than-expected campaign that saw him score just nine goals.  Clearly, Copp is hoping that a more traditional offseason and a full camp will result in him being more productive in 2023-24.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • If the Sabres intend to go with a young goalie tandem next season in Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, veteran Eric Comrie would likely be the odd one out. With that in mind, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News suggests that Buffalo would be wise to re-sign Malcolm Subban this offseason to hedge as insurance in case Comrie is either traded or cleared off waivers.  While there is definitely an upside to carrying two promising youngsters in goal, it stands to reason that they should have at least one veteran in the fold.  Subban had a 2.94 GAA with a .903 SV% in 39 regular season games with Rochester.
  • After a tough showing last night against Florida, some have wondered if Boston might opt to make a goalie change heading into Sunday’s series-deciding game. Speaking with reporters today including Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic (Twitter link), head coach Jim Montgomery declined to say who will get the nod.  Linus Ullmark, the expected Vezina Trophy winner, has allowed 10 goals on 57 shots over the last two games but while they have a more than capable backup in Jeremy Swayman, the 24-year-old has just three minutes of game action since the regular season ended two-and-a-half weeks ago.

Injury Updates: Jets, Kravtsov, Subban

After sustaining an injury when blocking a shot against St. Louis on Monday, Jets defenseman Logan Stanley did not participate in practice today, notes Joshua Frey-Sam of the Winnipeg Free Press.  However, he is accompanying the team on their three-game road trip which bodes well for his availability at some point over that three-game stretch.

Meanwhile, Frey-Sam adds that blueliner Dylan Samberg was a full participant in practice as he works his way back from a lower-body injury.  The 23-year-old has suited up just once this season as he looks to lock down a full-time spot in the lineup over returning to the minors.  With Stanley’s availability in question for tomorrow against Los Angeles, Samberg could have a chance to get back into Winnipeg’s lineup for at least a game.

Other injury news from around the hockey world:

  • When the Rangers recalled winger Julien Gauthier earlier today, it was expected that he’d take the place of either Mika Zibanejad or Vitali Kravtsov who were banged up last night against Colorado. It turns out that he’s taking the case of the latter as Larry Brooks of the New York Post relays (Twitter link) that the winger has been listed as day-to-day with what’s believed to be an upper-body injury.  Kravtsov has had a very quiet return to the NHL so far having only played in three games while logging just under eight minutes per game.  He’s waiver-eligible now so they will likely be patient with him to give him a chance to play himself into a regular role once he’s cleared to return.
  • Sabres goaltender Malcolm Subban has had some rough injury luck lately. After suffering a season-ending wrist injury back in January, he re-signed in Buffalo only to suffer an injury in his first preseason game with AHL Rochester earlier this month.  However, the 28-year-old is a couple of weeks away from being cleared to return, mentions Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald.  Buffalo’s preference is to have prospect Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen play heavy minutes in the minors so Subban’s eventual return will give them some insurance on that front as he’d be the one to be called up if one of Craig Anderson or Eric Comrie gets injured.

Sabres Notes: Young Players, Okposo, Injuries

On what is expected to be a busy Monday around the NHL with the deadline to submit rosters approaching at 5:00 pm ET today, Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams met with the media this morning to discuss, primarily, his new leadership group that features the club’s 20th captain, Kyle Okposo. Adams praised Okposo’s leadership and his relationship with teammates and echoed much of the same sentiment towards alternate captain Zemgus Girgensons. The GM also lauded defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, now a full-time alternate captain, for his development not only on the ice, but as a person in the locker room and his drive to get better.

Beyond the new leadership group, Adams touched on several other news and notes, including the status of several of the team’s young players like John-Jason Peterka, Jack Quinn, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. As to Peterka and Quinn, Adams seemed to indicate that both would be on the team’s opening night roster, saying the body of work the pair had put in with the AHL’s Rochester Americans last year shows that they are “ready to take the next step.” Adams continued, referring to the team’s entire young core, including names like Peyton Krebs and Mattias Samuelsson as well, that they will ultimately need to get more and more reps in to continue to develop at this level. On Luukkonen, Adams was impressed with his offseason and training camp efforts, but appeared to confirm the expected, that the goaltender would begin the season in Rochester with veterans Eric Comrie and Craig Anderson on the NHL roster. Seeing Luukkonen spend another year in the minors may not necessarily be exciting news for Sabres fans, however giving him regular starts should make a strong contribution to his overall development.

  • Also from Adams’ availability, when discussing his new leadership group, he touched on the contractual future of captain Kyle Okposo, who is in the last year of a seven-year, $42MM deal, saying the team had yet to discuss an extension with their veteran. That news, combined with some of the objective disappointment on both sides over the life of the contract, might seem to point to a parting of ways at the end of this year, however given the fact that the team named him their captain with just one year left on his contract, with other cornerstone options available, indicates that there is a chance the winger could be back. Any extension with Okposo surely won’t match his current deal, but if he can repeat on his impressive 21 goal, 45 point 2021-22 season, he should find his way to a relatively strong payday.
  • On the injury front, goaltender Malcolm Subban, who left last night’s Rochester preseason game with an injury, could be out for some time, Adams said. The team is still awaiting a further update on Subban. Forward Riley Sheahan will begin the season on injured-reserve as well, the only player expected to be there on the opening night roster, says Adams.
