Detroit Red Wings Sign Albert Johansson

June 5, 2020 at 4:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings continued their rebuild today, signing prospect Albert Johansson to a three-year entry-level contract. The young defenseman spent the 2019-20 season with Farjestads of the SHL.

Johansson, 19, was the 60th overall pick last year and represents another member of the Red Wings growing defensive prospect pool. The team used three of their top four picks a year ago on European defensemen, with Johansson joining Moritz Seider (6th overall) and Antti Tuomisto (35th).

Though he only scored 13 points in 42 SHL games, just taking a regular shift at such a young age is an impressive feat. Johansson only turned 19 in January, meaning his contract can still slide a year if he fails to make the NHL squad.

That fate is likely given that the 6’0″ 168-lbs defenseman still needs quite a bit of polish and physical maturity, but his raw skills represent a lot to get excited about. Whether he spends next season in the SHL or AHL is unclear, but expect his offensive production to improve in either case as he becomes more accustomed to the opposition.

Johansson is also a contender for the Swedish squad at the next World Juniors, given his gold medal performance at the U18 and silver medal at the Hlinka-Gretzky.

May 27, 2020 at 3:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings season has come to an end following the announcement of the return to play format, meaning they’ll go down as one of the worst teams in history (at least in terms of points percentage). The club finished 17-49-5 and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, leading many to question the future of Jeff Blashill.

Steve Yzerman, Detroit GM, is not one of those questioning his head coach. On a conference call with reporters today including Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Yzerman explained that he has “no plans on making a coaching change at this time.” Blashill signed a two-year contract extension in 2019 that carries him through the 2020-21 season but now has a 153-194-52 record as head coach of the Red Wings.

  • A report out of Russia has Buffalo Sabres defenseman Lawrence Pilut heading to the KHL next season, though it has not been confirmed at this point. Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News reports that the Sabres are inquiring with Pilut to see if he has indeed signed or agreed to terms with Traktor Chelyabinsk. Pilut is scheduled to become a restricted free agent later this summer, but with the Sabres already eliminated from play he could be looking for a new opportunity already. The 24-year old Pilut ended up playing just 46 games over two seasons for Buffalo, despite being excellent in the minor leagues and showing he could handle NHL duty. Should he decide to pursue a contract overseas, the Sabres could temporarily retain his rights by issuing him a qualifying offer.
  • With just a few days left to sign them, Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin explained to reporters including Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports that they will not be issuing contract offers to a few prospects. Allan McShane, Cole Fonstad and Samuel Houde–all players that will see their draft rights expire on June 1st–will not receive contracts from the Canadiens.

Representatives For Dmytro Timashov Deny KHL Deal

May 25, 2020 at 7:12 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

  • Last week, reports surfaced that Red Wings winger Dmytro Timashov was nearing a deal with Dinamo Riga of the KHL. However, representatives for the 23-year-old denied the reports to Mark Falkner of The Detroit News.  Timashov was picked up by Detroit off waivers from Toronto at the draft deadline and played in five games with his new team before the pandemic shut down the season.  He’s slated to be a restricted free agent without salary arbitration rights this offseason and if he doesn’t wind up heading overseas, he should be in the mix for a depth role with the Red Wings for next season.

When hockey seasons were canceled or postponed all around the world just over two months ago, it was always the expectation that they would eventually return to normal. The NHL is headed toward a return of some sort this summer, while the AHL is working through models for how they can run a 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case for the University of Alabama-Huntsville hockey program, which according to Todd Milewski of USCHO is no more. UAH president Darren Dawson and athletics director Cade Smith released a statement on the situation:

After a comprehensive review of UAH’s athletic offerings and the associated long-term budget implications, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the men’s hockey, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis programs.

The UAH program is perhaps best known for producing Cam Talbot, the Calgary Flames goaltender who has played in over 300 NHL games. Talbot spent three seasons there before working his way up through the New York Rangers farm system to eventually become a starting goaltender.

  • Just yesterday there was excitement in the Ottawa area when a local rink opened its doors and allowed a limited number of people on the ice, a sign that things were starting to return to normal in the hockey world. Unfortunately that hope was dashed just 24 hours later when the Minto Arena was ordered to close again temporarily. Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun reports that the rink had been completely booked, but closed the doors after authorities told them to wait until “a more fulsome discussion about the application of the provincial orders could occur.”
  • Dmytro Timashov finally looked like he was going to get a better opportunity in the NHL before the coronavirus put a halt to the 2019-20 season. The young forward had been claimed off waivers by the Detroit Red Wings and played in five games with the team, but may not be sticking around to play another. A report out of Russia has Timashov close to a deal with Dinamo Riga of the KHL, though obviously nothing is official at this point. The Red Wings season technically isn’t finished until the league announces the return-to-play format (something that could happen this weekend), while Timashov isn’t actually a free agent until July 1 when his entry-level contract expires. In 44 total games this season between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Wings, Timashov recorded nine points.

Snapshots: Pominville, Leivo, Red Wings Goaltending

May 16, 2020 at 2:30 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 2 Comments

He hasn’t played in a game since the 2018-19 season ended and it now looks like Jason Pominville’s NHL career is officially over. The veteran forward hasn’t made a formal announcement regarding his retirement, but accepted a coaching position with the Lanaudiere Pioneers, a youth hockey team near his hometown of Repentigny, Quebec, according to the Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski.

Pominville, who said he had hoped he would be signed by an NHL team at the trade deadline, will be an associate coach at the pee-wee and midget levels, but is also expected to serve as a special adviser and a skills trainer within the organization. The 37-year-old spent last season training, but also serving as an assistant coach, coaching his son Jayden with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.

The veteran played 1,060 games in his 15 years in the league. He spent the majority of that time with the Buffalo Sabres where he ranks eighth in franchise history in games played with 733.

  • Many teams might be able to take advantage of the suspension in play if/when the NHL continues. Several players, who were expected to miss most or all of the 2019-20 season, are now expected to be ready to return to duty when play resumes. However, Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre writes that Vancouver Canucks forward Josh Leivo isn’t currently one of those players. Leivo, who fractured his kneecap during a game on Dec. 19, was expected to miss the 2019-20 season. However, the Canucks always stated that if they could go deep into the playoffs, Leivo might be able to return. However, MacIntyre adds that if the playoffs started today, Leivo would not be ready. The 26-year-old already passed his career high in points, posting 19 points in 36 games.
  • While there has been plenty of talk about what the Detroit Red Wings intend to do about their goaltending situation, MLive’s Ansar Khan writes that the team will be looking for a veteran backup in free agency this offseason. The team believes that goaltender Jonathan Bernier is their starter and likely was the team’s most valuable player despite average numbers of a 15-22-3 record, a 2.95 GAA and a .907 save percentage. However, Khan notes, his numbers look pretty good when you look at the goalie numbers when he wasn’t playing: 2-27-2, 4.33 GAA and a .875 save percentage. With a price range likely under $3MM, the best fits might include Cam Talbot, Thomas Greiss and Aaron Dell.

Red Wings Aren't Having Any Contract Talks During Pandemic

May 9, 2020 at 1:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

  • The Red Wings have not held any talks with their pending free agents during this stoppage, notes Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News. Winger Anthony Mantha is their top restricted free agent of note and indicated that he’s unconcerned about the lack of talks.  Back in March, he had stated that he was hoping to get a long-term deal done with Detroit but the fact he only has played in 43 games this season due to knee and lung issues may make that a bit more challenging.

Snapshots: Draft Odds, Blackwood, Canucks

May 4, 2020 at 3:29 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The Detroit Red Wings would be the beneficiaries of the revised draft lottery the league suggested in a memo over the weekend, given that they are currently the team last in the NHL standings. Not only would they have the highest chance to win the lottery themselves, but with the winner only allowed to move up four spots Detroit would have a good chance at losing the lottery but maintaining their first-overall selection.

Travis Yost of TSN broke out the numbers today, showing how Detroit went from having a 51% chance of selecting fourth in the regular format to a 57% of selecting first in the revised one. That kind of change is huge for a club like Detroit who are looking for another star to build their next competitive team around. The entire set of odds is in Yost’s article, but it is important to note that this format has not yet been officially adopted by the league.

  • MacKenzie Blackwood is scheduled to become a restricted free agent for the first time after this season comes to an end, but it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be a tough negotiation for the New Jersey Devils. The young goaltender told Mike Morreale of NHL.com that he loves playing in New Jersey and hopes the two sides “can figure something out” to keep him there for a long time. The 23-year old Blackwood posted a .915 save percentage in 47 appearances this season and looks to be the Devils’ starter for the foreseeable future.
  • Edmonton isn’t the only western Canadian city that is offering to host games should the NHL resume this summer. Ryan Rishaug of TSN reports that Vancouver has also submitted a proposal to the league to be a host city. There is obviously nothing decided yet by the league on where games will be held should they be played at some point in the next few months.

Victor Brattstrom Signs With Detroit Red Wings

April 29, 2020 at 3:22 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings have gotten another prospect under contract, signing Victor Brattstrom to a two-year entry-level deal. Just last month it was reported that Brattstrom would be joining KooKoo in Finland for next season, which is still possible, but he would be playing on loan from the Red Wings now that his entry-level contract is complete.

Despite only being drafted two years ago, Brattstrom is already 23 and has multiple seasons of professional hockey under his belt. For Timra IK in Sweden’s second league this season he posted a .914 save percentage in his league-leading 45 appearances, good enough for eighth among qualified goaltenders.

The 6’5″ Brattstrom covers a lot of the net with his long frame, but will have to reach another level if he’s ever going to make it to the NHL with the Red Wings. There is certainly plenty of opportunity in the organization however, without a clear goaltender-of-the-future coming through the pipeline.

Mathias Brome Expected To Sign With Detroit Red Wings

April 28, 2020 at 6:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Vancouver Canucks have lost a free agent battle with the Detroit Red Wings, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that Mathias Brome is expected to sign in Motown. Brome had been deciding between the two clubs after another outstanding season in the SHL.

Now 25, the undrafted forward is coming to North America for the first time in his hockey career, one that has been marked by drastic year-over-year improvement. Brome has become a star at every level of hockey in Sweden, and is coming off a 43-point performance with Orebro HK in the 2019-20 season. That was good enough for sixth in the SHL scoring race, obviously drawing some interest from across the pond.

It’s hard to blame an unproven free agent like Brome for picking Detroit, given how many opportunities will be available next season. The Red Wings are still just at the beginning of their rebuild and will need bodies to fill in a roster that will likely look considerably different next season. For Detroit GM Steve Yzerman, signing a player like Brome could not only give his team a boost on the ice, but perhaps an extra trade chip come deadline day.

Atlantic Notes: Red Wings, Stamkos, Romanov

April 26, 2020 at 12:16 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 4 Comments

With plenty of cap room and a major need in the net, many feel that the Detroit Red Wings and general manager Steve Yzerman might make a splash into the free-agent market this offseason. Longtime goaltender Jimmy Howard is 36 years old, coming off his worst season and is an unrestricted free agent, meaning that a return is extremely unlikely. Throw in the fact that there are several big names that could become available at the time, including Braden Holtby and Robin Lehner, and it’s very likely the Red Wings will be exploring that market.

However, the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James writes neither Holtby or Lehner are likely candidates to come to Detroit next season. Holtby might not be too interested in joining a rebuilding team and the scribe believes that both players’ price tags are likely to be too rich for what the Red Wings are going to be interested to pay. Holtby is currently making $6.1MM per season, while Lehner is currently on a one-year deal at $5MM. Neither is likely to be willing to take much of a pay cut.

James suggests the team is likely going to look for a player to join Jonathan Bernier in more of a tandem role on a short-term deal, including players like Cam Talbot, Anton Khudobin and Jaroslav Halak.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning suffered a major loss back in early March when it was announced that captain Steven Stamkos would miss six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a core muscle injury. The recovery time would likely have forced him to miss at least the first-round of the playoffs. However, the suspension of play due to COVID-19 has allowed Stamkos the time he needed to get healthy and recently told Joe Smith of The Athletic (subscription required), that he’ll be ready to go when play resumes. “With the timing of all this, it was devastating at the beginning because I thought I would possibly be missing some playoff games,” Stamkos said. “And the stoppage happened, and we didn’t know how long it was gonna be. So the silver lining in that was I’ll be ready when we resume. So I’ve been able to still use this time to rehab. I’ve been going to the rink … about three times a week to skate and just start feeling normal again.”
  • Sportsnet’s Eric Engels reports that while Montreal Canadiens fans are waiting for top prospect Alex Romanov to sign on the dotted line in the next few days, that might have to wait. Despite that fact that his KHL contract will expire on April 30, Romanov doesn’t intend to sign a contract until he knows what is happening in regards to the NHL’s 2019-20 season. He does intend to sign once play is expected to resume, but the 20-year-old wants to make sure he doesn’t sit for a lengthy amount of time. The defenseman has already played two full seasons in the KHL and many hope that Romanov is ready to step into Montreal’s lineup as soon as next season.
