Minor Transactions: 02/23/17

February 23, 2017 at 9:48 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There are six games on tap in the National Hockey League tonight, including a big matchup between the New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens that both teams need desperately to keep pace with the rest of the surging conference. There will be quite a few roster moves as teams get closer to the trade deadline, and we’ll have them all right here for you. Keep checking back as it will be updated throughout the day.

  • A move that actually happened last night, the Anaheim Ducks called up Jhonas Enroth to backup Jonathan Bernier’s amazing performance. John Gibson couldn’t go due to a lower-body injury—that is only listed as day-to-day—and thus the hottest goalie in the AHL was called up in reserve. We spoke about Enroth in the Ducks deadline preview, and how he could supplant Bernier if the team could find a buyer for him this week.
  •  The Washington Capitals have sent Travis Boyd back down after their game in Philadelphia last night. He was just there for insurance against an injury just before game time and now will return to Hershey for the time being.
  • Jeff Glass apparently has done enough for the Chicago Blackhawks to keep him around. The former third-round pick that has played hockey all over the world signed a two-year deal today to stay in the Hawks’ system. The Blackhawks didn’t have a goaltender to expose in the upcoming expansion draft, as both Scott Darling (UFA) and Mac Carruth (RFA) are free agents this summer.
  • Jeff Zatkoff has cleared waivers, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. That does not mean that he has been reassigned to the Ontario Reign however, as the Kings decide what to do with their goaltending. It sounds like Jonathan Quick is not quite ready to return, but is getting closer each day.
  • The Boston Bruins have assigned Austin Czarnik to the AHL and sent down Joe Morrow on a conditioning stint. The baby Bruins also lost Zac Rinaldo for the rest of the season according to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal. He will have surgery on his wrist and will not play again this season.
  • The Capitals have also recalled Riley Barber and Aaron Ness today, following the news that Matt Niskanen is likely out for tomorrow night’s game. To make room, the team has moved Andre Burakovsky to injured reserve.

Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire Ron Hainsey, Trevor Daley Out Six Weeks

February 23, 2017 at 9:45 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired Ron Hainsey from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Danny Kristo and a second-round pick. The Penguins have fired the first Eastern Conference salvo as they acquire the veteran defenseman. With the injury to Olli Maatta, it seemed just a matter of time until Pittsburgh addressed their defense and Hainsey seems like a perfect fit. The team announced just after the deal broke that Trevor Daley underwent knee surgery and will also miss six weeks, another blow to the blueline. Carolina will be retaining 50% of Hainsey’s $2.83MM cap hit for the remainder of the year. Ron Hainsey

A veteran of 891 NHL games, Hainsey’s streak of never reaching the postseason is certain to come to an end now. Capable of logging big minutes for any club, he’ll likely be asked to do a little less in Pittsburgh than in Carolina where he was playing over 22 minutes a night. His ability on the penalty kill is likely what interested GM Jim Rutherford most—who actually signed Hainsey to his current deal while with Carolina in 2014—as the Penguins currently have the 22nd ranked PK in the league.

Hainsey has an incredible record of durability, something that will be tested as he heads to the playoffs for the first time. The 35-year old (36 in March) has played in at least 80 games each of the past three seasons and seven times in his career. With Maatta, Daley and Justin Schultz all either out long-term or battling injury, the fact that he can be penciled in every night is important to the Penguins.

Despite that durability though, the Penguins paid a steep price for this addition. Hainsey is a capable defender and excellent penalty killer but doesn’t come with much offensive upside at this stage in his career. It’s the salary retention that likely bumped the pick up to a second-rounder, as it leaves room for the team to make another addition if necessary.

Kristo is a former second-round pick in his own right, though has never broken into the NHL. A consistent scoring threat in the minor leagues, he is now 26 and is barely a prospect. Though he does come with some value as organizational depth on the wing, he shouldn’t be seen as much going forward.

Carolina now holds ten picks in this summer’s entry draft, including six in the top three rounds. They also could still sell more at the deadline, shedding pending free agents like Viktor Stalberg and Jay McClement or trade deadline favorite Lee Stempniak if they choose. With a young core and more coming, they are a team on the rise in the Eastern Conference, despite struggling this season.

Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports was first to report the trade on Twitter, with Pierre LeBrun of ESPN providing details on the retained salary.

Snapshots: Gilbert, Schmaltz, Vrbata

February 23, 2017 at 8:58 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

When Tom Gilbert was traded from Los Angeles to the Washington Capitals just over a week ago, it was a step in the right direction for the veteran defenseman. Gilbert had played just 18 games for the Kings and was clearly not in their plans after sending him through waivers to the AHL. He told Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post as much and admitted that coming to Washington was very exciting for him. The Capitals acquired him mostly as injury depth, as he is still playing at the AHL level. But perhaps his coming East will pay off already.

Matt Niskanen was taken out of last night’s game with a lower-body injury, and though it doesn’t seem to be serious it is a sign of how close Gilbert is to having to play a vital role on the best team in the NHL. The Capitals already have just two right-handed defensemen—Niskanen and John Carlson—and use Nate Schmidt on his off-side with Brooks Orpik. If either of Niskanen or Carlson went down it would open a gaping hole on the Caps back end, one that Gilbert would gladly step into. Remember that though it was a long time ago, Gilbert was once a 45 point defenseman, capable of moving the puck with the best of them. It’s nice to have depth.

  • It’s a dream come true for Chicago Blackhawks winger Nick Schmaltz as he plays alongside Jonathan Toews. Schmaltz had three points last night and looks to be finding a nice groove on the wing of the resurgent Toews. In his rookie season Schmaltz has just 14 points in 41 games, but six of those have come in the last five as he’s gotten a nice icetime bump. Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times writes in his latest column that the Blackhawks may have found an answer long-term on the captain’s wing. It doesn’t hurt that both are from the University of North Dakota and have taken a very similar path to the NHL.
  • If you consider Schmaltz a long-term piece on the top line, then how do you fill the other side? Is Richard Panik really the answer beside Toews? Craig Morgan of FanRag Sports has his doubts, and suggests a former Hawk should make his way back to the Windy City. Radim Vrbata is available at the deadline, and with his ridiculously low cap-hit of just $1MM, Chicago could likely afford him for the final part of the season. The veteran winger has 41 points this season and has rebounded well from the worst year of his career.

Deadline Primer: Dallas Stars

February 22, 2017 at 9:57 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

With the trade deadline now just a week away, we continue to take a closer look at each team. Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?

The Dallas Stars were a popular pick to go a long way in the Western Conference this season.  Unfortunately for them, the injury bug has struck in a tough way while their goaltending has struggled considerably.  Accordingly, they’re lined up to be sellers over this next week and have quite a few rental players that should be of interest to other teams around the league.

Record

23-27-10, 6th in Central Division

Deadline Status

Deadline Cap Space

$10.3MM – full-season cap hit, 46/50 contracts per CapFriendly

Draft Picks

2017: DAL 1st, DAL 2nd, DAL 3rd, DAL 4th, DAL 5th, DAL 6th, DAL 7th
2018:
DAL 1st, DAL 2nd, DAL 3rd, DAL 4th, DAL 5th, DAL 6th, DAL 7th

Trade Chips

May 1, 2016; Dallas, TX, USA; Dallas Stars left wing Patrick Sharp (10) skates against the St. Louis Blues during game two of the first round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs at the American Airlines Center. The Blues win 4-3 in overtime. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsThe Stars have a lot more potential unrestricted free agents than most teams do which makes them a team that anyone looking for short-term help will be calling on a regular basis.  It’s not crazy to think that three or four of them could be moved over the next week.  Considering where they thought they would be this season, it’s unlikely that they’re going to drastically change course and move anyone from their core out.  Instead, they’re likely to take what they can get for some of their rentals and regroup in the summer.

One intriguing player that isn’t a rental is right winger Valeri Nichushkin.  He spurned an offer over the summer to re-sign with the Stars to ink a contract back at home in the KHL with CSKA Moscow.  The former tenth overall pick has another year left on his contract in Russia but his restricted free agent rights could conceivably be included if the right trade presents itself.

Also, if Dallas makes a move for a goalie (more on that shortly), one of their current netminders would likely be on the move in an effort to match salaries.

Five Players To Watch For: RW Patrick Eaves, LW Jiri Hudler, LW Lauri Korpikoski, D Johnny Oduya, LW Patrick Sharp

Team Needs

1) Goaltending Upgrade – The Stars have the highest cap hit allocated to their goalies this season with a duo of Kari Lehtonen ($5.9MM) and Antti Niemi ($4.5MM).  To they haven’t received a high level of goaltending would be an understatement as the duo have combined for a .895 save percentage, tied for worst in the NHL.  Both players are signed for one more season beyond this one as well which means this situation isn’t likely to resolve itself for at least another year.

Between the expansion draft and other situations where a second quality goaltender has emerged, this isn’t a bad time for GM Jim Nill to be on the lookout for some help between the pipes as it looks to be a bit of a buyers’ market.  It’s not as likely that they’ll be able to bring someone in via free agency though as one of Niemi or Lehtonen’s contracts would have to be moved out first and that will be a considerable challenge if they’re not taking a goalie back in that trade.  They don’t have to address it by the deadline but by the time July 1st rolls around, this should be resolved.

2) Defensive Improvements – Dallas has several defensemen whose offensive abilities stand out more than their defensive prowess.  While the hope that quality stay-at-home veterans like Oduya and Dan Hamhuis would have been able to offset some of those concerns, they haven’t been able to.  As a result, the Stars will need to bring in some help on the back end at some point to complement the likes of John Klingberg, Julius Honka, and Esa Lindell.  It’s more likely that a deal here would come over the summer but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them add some pieces (picks or prospects) to help them fill that void later on.

Atlantic Notes: Miller, Bishop, Bruins

February 22, 2017 at 8:43 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Red Wings are in sell mode before next week’s trade deadline and one of the players hoping to be moved is left winger Drew Miller, reports MLive’s Peter J. Wallner.  The 33 year old cleared waivers last month and is presently playing with their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.  That hasn’t stopped Miller from hoping that a team will want him as veteran depth for the postseason, something he notes the team is trying to find:

“That’s what they’ve been trying to do is just wait to see what teams may be looking to add and have a good fit. No one’s really making a move yet, but I would think that will change as we get closer. Hopefully, I get traded. I want to be in the NHL – everyone wants to be there – so we’ll see how it goes.”

Miller carries a cap hit of $1.025MM this season and will become an unrestricted free agent in July.  If a team were to acquire him and keep him in the minors, they would still be charged a pro-rated $75K on the cap.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division:

  • As is often the case when it comes to teams in the middle of the pack with notable pending free agents, the Lightning find themselves in a dilemma with goalie Ben Bishop, writes Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. On the one hand, Bishop has won five straight starts and Tampa Bay is only four points out of a playoff spot.  On the other, the extension they gave to Andrei Vasilevskiy all but sealed Bishop’s fate that he won’t be back next season so if there is interest elsewhere, this is their chance to get something for him rather than lose him for nothing.  While there are a lot of goalies believed to be available, a lot of them have term left on their contracts which could make Bishop a bit more appealing to other teams who are just looking for a short-term improvement.
  • Although the Bruins were active in the rental market last season by bringing in right winger Lee Stempniak and defenseman John-Michael Liles, GM Don Sweeney suggested to CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty that they’re unlikely to go that route again. Instead, they plan to stick to a longer-term view and look to add players who may be able to contribute beyond this season and aren’t keen on moving any draft picks.  Boston has played themselves back into the thick of the playoff hunt and the team has more than enough cap space to make some additions if they can find the right trade but Haggerty argues that the more prudent approach would be to stand pat now and make those deals in the offseason.

Friedman’s Latest: Vermette, Smith, Oduya, Eaves, Flames

February 22, 2017 at 7:30 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Although Antoine Vermette’s suspension was a CBA-mandated 10 games, there is a growing suggestion that it could be cut in half via the appeal process, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman writes in his latest 30 Thoughts column.  He believes that this could be something that the league and the Players’ Association were working on which could explain the delay in the suspension being announced in the first place (not to mention how quickly it was announced that an appeal had been launched).

However, this doesn’t appear to be something that the NHL officials would be too happy with so this is far from a sure bet.  Many officials are still unhappy with Gary Bettman’s decision to reduce the ban on Dennis Wideman last year and Friedman could see the officials pushing back on this one.

As always, the full 30 Thoughts are well worth the read but here are a handful of the highlights:

  • The Red Wings are telling teams that they are “open for business” when it comes to the trade market. However, they’re unwilling to move any key youngsters unless a young, top pairing defenseman is involved in the discussions.  He notes that Detroit will talk to defenseman Brendan Smith about a possible contract extension in the coming days before committing to moving him as a rental by March 1st.  We took a closer look at Smith’s case recently in our Trade Candidates series.
  • While Dallas blueliner Johnny Oduya would be an ideal target for many contenders, there is concern over the shape of his ankle, which has caused him to miss time twice already this season (he currently is out of the lineup as a result of it). If he’s able to return in the coming days (or is at least close), there should still be some interest but if not, the Stars may be in tough to get the type of return they’re hoping for.  Still with the Stars, there are no talks on an extension with pending UFA winger Patrick Eaves.  With 21 goals and a cap hit of just $1MM, there will be plenty of teams interested in him over the next week.
  • Friedman expects that the Flames haven’t finished making moves yet after their acquisition of defenseman Michael Stone earlier this week. He notes that they’re looking for some grit on the wing and also wouldn’t be surprised if they look at the goaltending market.  Calgary sits 24th in team save percentage this season and both Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson are slated to be unrestricted free agents in July.  There are more notable goalies available than usual this season so the time might be right for GM Brad Treliving to try to upgrade that position.

Evening Snapshots: Callahan, Conacher, Kerdiles

February 22, 2017 at 6:21 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without Ryan Callahan indefinitely, reports Bryan Burns of TampaBayLightning.com. Callahan suffered a hip injury in January but was expected to return last week. There is now no new date for his return as Callahan gets ready for a second procedure to try and fix the issue. GM Steve Yzerman intimated that Callahan will miss the remainder of the season and some of the playoffs, should the Lightning go on a run. The veteran winger has 2G and 2A in 18 games so far. The Lightning—should they put Callahan on LTIR—would be able to exceed the cap by Callahan’s $5.8MM cap hit if they want to load up on trade deadline rentals. They are only 4 points out of a wild card spot with 22 games left to play.
  • Continuing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team called up forward Cory Conacher, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Conacher is currently 9th overall in AHL scoring, and fresh off a two-goal performance last night with the Syracuse Crunch. So far Conacher hasn’t had a proper chance to translate his AHL success to the NHL, but has 1G and 1A in seven games with the big club. Joe Smith speculates that Conacher was recalled just in case Jonathan Drouin cannot play tonight. Lightning Insider Erik Erlendsson reported that Drouin did not practice with the team today.
  • Anaheim Ducks forward Nicolas Kerdiles is set to make his NHL debut tonight against the Boston Bruins, reports Curtis Zupke of the Los Angeles Times. The Ducks drafted Kerdiles 36th overall in 2012, but the Texas native placed in the NCAA for the next two years. He’s played only ten games with the AHL San Diego Gulls this season after suffering his second concussion, but he’s managed to record 4G and 5A those ten games. Early reports have him skating with Rickard Rakell and Corey Perry.

Declining Greatness: The Case For Jarome Iginla

February 22, 2017 at 5:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

A few weeks ago Zach Leach profiled one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history, Jarome Iginla. He started the piece by saying that Iginla was “a legend with very bad luck” and though he was talking about Iginla’s career, and how close (but yet so far) he has come on several occasions to being in the right place at the right time, he could have easily meant something else that teams should consider when looking at the 618-goal man this trade deadline.

No, it’s not his age—the fact that he’ll turn 40 this July is something everyone should be aware of, but not what this piece will be about. Not his cap hit either; the $5.33MM number is a tough pill to swallow for sure, but at least it expires at the end of the year. It’s his shooting percentage. Sure, Iginla might be a step slower than he has been in the past, and perhaps this legend is ready to ride off into the sunset. It’s just that there may be something left in the tank. Jarome Iginla

First of all, he’s playing on Colorado which has been a deathtrap for offensive players all season. Whether it’s the coaching of Jared Bednar, the horrible possession metrics almost everyone has put up, or some toxic attitude leaking down from the front office, nearly everyone has been underperforming. Matt Duchene is on a 52 point pace, which would be the lowest he’s recorded for a season where he played more than 70 games. Gabriel Landeskog may not crack 40, well below his career average. Even Nathan MacKinnon, who is currently leading the team in scoring doesn’t look like he’ll improve much on his 52 point effort from a year ago, in which he played only 72 games.

Iginla is right there along with them, scoring just 16 points in 58 games. But what do you expect from a guy who has lined up beside John Mitchell and Blake Comeau for most of the season, a duo that has a combined point total of 15. He’s also been given the least amount of icetime of his career, playing just 14:45 per night. Perhaps this is just because he’s no good anymore, but there may be a silver lining.

Yes, that’s the shooting percentage which currently sits at 6.1%, less than half of his career rate. He’s still generating shots, with 114 on the year but just nothing is going in for him. He’s on pace to almost match the shot total from each of the last two years, when he had 29 and 22 goals respectively, and doing it with much worse linemates. No, he’ll never be a defensive presence that drives possession, but he can be a goal scoring threat even at his advanced age. If he sat at his career shooting percentage we’d be talking about a 15-goal scorer instead, despite Mitchell and Comeau still being alongside him.

Playoff experience can’t exactly be quantified, but anecdotally the game slows down in the postseason. When the whistles are put away, a bit more obstruction takes place and physical goal scoring threats are extremely important. Iginla has scored 37 playoff goals in just 81 games, a better per-game pace than Sidney Crosby. It’s not that he’ll continue to be a legendary goal scoring threat, just that he may still be a fine secondary option for a team looking for some depth on the wing. He won’t cost much, and he might just get that one last chance at a Stanley Cup.

Casey Cizikas To Miss Four Weeks With Upper-Body Injury

February 22, 2017 at 3:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After leaving last night’s game, Casey Cizikas will be out for approximately four weeks according to Arthur Staple of Newsday. Casey Cizikas The Islanders made an emergency recall of Bracken Kearns today to fill in, but was thought of as the fill-in for Cal Clutterbuck who also left with an injury. We’ll wait and see what the lineup looks like tomorrow against the Montreal Canadiens.

With Cizikas out, the Islanders have lost even more depth at a position they severely lack. Center ice has been a problem for them all season with Mikhail Grabovski fighting concussion symptoms and Ryan Strome not being able to make the transition at the NHL level. Cizikas has played up and down the lineup for the team and takes the second most draws behind only John Tavares. His absence will not only leave a defensive hole, but also a physical one. He and Clutterbuck have formed one of the most punishing combinations in the league in recent years—along with Matt Martin who signed with Toronto this summer—and have worn out defenders with a persistent forecheck.

For the Islanders, who are actually tied for a playoff spot currently, it is a big blow to an already depleted forward group. Since watching Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo leave in free agency, the team has had a difficult time finding forwards that can provide consistency for them. Cizikas even has more points than the big offseason fish Andrew Ladd, though that is turning around recently. This may force the team to pursue an upgrade at the trade deadline, even if it does come in the form of a rental from one of the bottom-dwellers of the Western Conference.

Injury Notes: Marner, Senators, Johnson

February 22, 2017 at 2:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Maple Leafs escaped with two points last night against Winnipeg despite having to kill an Auston Matthews penalty in overtime, and got some more good news this morning. Though practice was cancelled for the majority of the team, Mitch Marner hit the ice and looked no worse for wear since sustaining a shoulder injury last week. Though coach Mike Babcock says he won’t play tomorrow night against the New York Rangers, he has a chance at playing on Saturday.

That would be a nice boost for the Maple Leafs who are actually just five points out of first place in the Atlantic Division. The continued brilliance of their rookies was on display again last night as Matthews recorded three assists in the victory.

  • The Leafs will be without Connor Carrick however, who suffered an upper-body injury when he collided awkwardly with Mathieu Perreault and left the game. Alexey Marchenko will slot into the lineup in his place for the first time since being acquired off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings earlier this month. Carrick’s timeline for return is unknown.
  • Pierre Dorion told the Ottawa Citizen that both Mike Hoffman and Mark Stone could play as early as Sunday, which is extremely important news for the Ottawa Senators. Getting the two wingers back would be a boost to a group that had trouble scoring last night in a 2-1 victory. The team generated just 23 shots on goal and needed Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson—their two remaining offensive options—to each light the lamp in the win.
  • Erik Johnson will return to the Colorado Avalanche lineup on Saturday according to Terry Frei of the Denver Post. The big defenseman has been out since the beginning of December and is finally skating without the non-contact jersey. As the Avalanche prepare for a busy trade deadline, Johnson looks like he’ll remain in Denver for the time being. His long contract and partial no-trade clause would make him difficult to move in-season even if there were people impressed enough by his return.
  • Ryan Callahan had another surgery on his hip yesterday, and is out indefinitely for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Callahan only played in 18 games for the club this season and now sounds like he might be out for the remainder of the year. While he’s not an integral part of their offense, losing a player of his experience is never a good thing. About to turn 32, Callahan is signed for another three seasons in Tampa Bay at a cap-hit of $5.8MM. Steve Yzerman said just a few days ago that he was operating under the assumption that Callahan and Steven Stamkos would be back at some point along with their cap-hits, and perhaps this clears that up.
