Nate Schmidt Out “Week-To-Week”
The Vegas Golden Knights got off to a great start to the 2019-20 season last night when they took down their rivals the San Jose Sharks, but it didn’t come without a cost. Nate Schmidt left the game after colliding with Logan Couture in the first period, and will now be out “week-to-week” with a lower-body injury according to head coach Gerard Gallant.
Schmidt ended up playing just over three minutes in the contest, forcing the rest of the Golden Knights defense to pick up the slack. That’s something that will have to continue, but this could open up an opportunity for one of the team’s other young defensemen. Jimmy Schuldt or Nicolas Hague in particular could slot into Schmidt’s spot, though neither offer the time of minute-munching ability of the 28-year old.
Even after missing the first 20 games of the 2018-19 season thanks to a PED suspension, Schmidt still recorded 30 points to trail only Shea Theodore (37) in scoring among Golden Knights defensemen. His +22 rating was easily a team-high and he was used heavily on both the powerplay and penalty kill at various times. That all packages together as one of the most valuable players on the team, and one Vegas can hardly afford to lose for any stretch of time.
Unfortunately for the Golden Knights, they’ll be without Schmidt when they take on the Sharks in the second half of a home-and-home tomorrow night in San Jose.
Alex Tuch Placed On LTIR, Vegas Recalls Nic Hague And Nicolas Roy
- The Golden Knights announced that they have recalled defencemen Nic Hague and center Nicolas Roy from Chicago of the AHL. Vegas didn’t have enough cap space to make these roster moves so they’ve transferred winger Alex Tuch to long-term injury reserve. He was injured late in the preseason and is listed as out on a week-to-week basis. He’ll need to sit at least ten games or 24 days before being eligible to be activated.
Poll: Who Will Win The Pacific Division In 2019-20?
We’ve finally reached the end of the offseason and things kick off tonight in the NHL. The regular season begins in Toronto with a matchup between the Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, while the St. Louis Blues will hang their banner against the 2018 champion Washington Capitals. The excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, with even the most minor transactions generating plenty of interest among hockey fans.
With that in mind we’ve been asking you, the PHR reader, to give us your thoughts on the upcoming season. We started with the Atlantic Division, which seemed an easy choice for a good chunk of our community. The Tampa Bay Lightning ran away with the poll, earning a whopping 46% of all votes. Next was the Metropolitan Division, which wasn’t quite as lopsided. The Washington Capitals were picked by 31% of the voters to take home their fifth consecutive division title, but the Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders all got at least 10%.
The closest so far though goes to the Central Division, which is almost a dead heat between the Blues and Colorado Avalanche. Five teams received at least 10% of the vote, with only the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild falling below that threshold. The Central looks like it will be a meat grinder right to the end, but the reigning Stanley Cup champions are at least slightly ahead right now.
Lastly we’ll look at the Pacific Division, which was filled with disappointment in 2018-19. Just three Western Conference playoff spots came out of the group, with the other five teams all recording 86 or fewer points in the regular season. This time around things might be different, but will the upstart Arizona Coyotes, Connor McDavid-led Edmonton Oilers or rebuilt Vancouver Canucks really be able to challenge for the top spot? Alex Tuch Out Week-To-Week, Cody Eakin Listed As Day-To-Day
- Vegas will be without winger Alex Tuch for the start of the season. He suffered an upper-body injury partway through Friday’s preseason game and as a result, he’s listed as week-to-week, notes Ben Gotz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. That’s a tough blow for their attack as the 23-year-old was fourth on the Golden Knights in scoring last season. Gotz also adds that center Cody Eakin is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body issue of his own.
Western Notes: Boeser, Laine, Tuch, Burdasov
The Vancouver Canucks are hoping that they can get Brock Boeser back from concussion for the start of the regular season. The star forward, along with defenseman Oscar Fantenberg, suffered a concussion on Monday against the Ottawa Senators. However, the Vancouver Sun’s Patrick Johnston writes that both players appear to be making progress in their recovery.
The scribe writes that Boeser and Fantenberg skated with the team at practice Saturday for 90 minutes. By participating in practice, the duo are now in Stage 4 of their recovery of the SCAT5 return to play protocol, which involves non-contact training drills. To be cleared, both players must pass through Stage 5, which requires Boeser and Fantenberg to go 24 hours without any symptoms following activity.
With no more practices until Monday, if either player feels well enough, they can be full participants for practice. If they then go 24 hours without symptoms, they will be cleared to play in their season opener on Wednesday against the Oilers in Edmonton.
- Tim Campbell of NHL.com writes that Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine, who just signed a two-year, $13.5MM contract on Friday, is expected to be in the Jets’ lineup in New York against the Rangers on Thursday. “Being that he’s been training, and has been training with men, our expectation is he’ll be able to come and move around the ice pretty good,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said of the 21-year-old forward, who was a restricted free agent and has not played this preseason. Laine is expected to arrive in Winnipeg on Monday for fitness testing and a physical and then should be ready for practice on Tuesday before the team leaves for New York.
- The Vegas Golden Knights got some bad news as forward Alex Tuch suffered an upper-body injury in Friday’s preseason game after he lost his balance and crashed hard into the boards and was forced to leave the game. Las Vegas Review-Journal’s David Schoen reports that Tuch is now listed as week-to-week and is expected to miss the start of the season for a second year in a row. Tuch scored 22 goals and 52 points last season and is currently slated to play on the Golden Knights’ third line.
- Despite releasing Russian winger Anton Burdasov from his PTO Saturday, the Edmonton Oilers had hoped they could convince the 28-year-old to accept an assignment to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, which might buy some time to get him back on the NHL roster. However, Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson writes that Burdasov intends to return to Russia and was only interested in a one-way deal.
