Washington Capitals Re-Sign Shane Gersich

June 19, 2021 at 5:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals have re-signed one of their minor league forwards, inking Shane Gersich to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will carry an NHL salary of $750K and keeps Gersich away from restricted free agency later this summer.

Now 24, Gersich made his Capitals debut in 2018 but hasn’t made it back to the NHL since. In 33 games for the Hershey Bears this season he managed to score six goals and 14 points, but still hasn’t been able to repeat the offensive performance that made him a star at the University of North Dakota. Drafted 134th overall in 2014, he has settled into a depth role in the AHL and is unlikely to see extended time with the Capitals, but is still a valuable asset for the organization as injury insurance.

Perhaps more important is his leadership role with the Bears, where he wore an “A” as an alternate captain this season. His minor league salary of $187,500 will keep him in the Washington organization and takes another RFA off the to-do list for Capitals GM Brian MacLellan.

Gersich will turn 25 in July, meaning that at this time next year he’ll be preparing for Group VI unrestricted free agency. That is of course unless he gets in 77 games with the Capitals next season, a notion that seems far-fetched at this point.

Washington Capitals Re-Sign Shane Gersich

October 14, 2020 at 10:34 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Washington Capitals are down to just one restricted free agent remaining after re-signing Shane Gersich to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K at the NHL level. Gersich and Jonas Siegenthaler were the last two RFAs to get under contract, neither of whom have arbitration rights.

The 24-year-old Gersich has played just three games at the NHL level, all of which came at the end of the 2017-18 season after signing out of the University of North Dakota. The two following seasons have been spent entirely at the minor league level, where Gersich has 42 points in 120 regular season games.

A fifth-round pick in 2014, he shouldn’t be expected to become the next impact player for the Capitals but is a worthwhile minor league depth player to keep around. He’ll still be a restricted free agent next offseason, barely missing the age threshold for Group VI unrestricted free agency.

Minor Transactions: 9/29/19

September 29, 2019 at 8:40 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Teams will be making roster moves as the season approaches as well as preparing their roster for the final preseason games.

  • The Washington Capitals announce they have recalled forward Shane Gersich from the Hershey Bears of the AHL. The team assigned the 23-year-old winger to Hershey Saturday, but decided they wanted him back for their final preseason game today. He is expected to replace Lars Eller in the lineup against Carolina today, who is still dealing with an upper-body injury. Gersich scored eight goals in 66 games with Hershey last season after three years at the University of North Dakota.
  • After recalling a group of Rockford Ice Hogs to help play in Saturday’s final preseason game against the Bruins (an 8-2 loss), the Chicago Blackhawks announced they will send those players back. The team has assigned forwards Dylan Sikura, Matthew Highmore, Brandon Hagel, Philipp Kurashev, Mikhael Hakkarainen, Alexandre Fortin, Reese Johnson, MacKenzie Entwistle, Jacob Nilsson, Tim Soderlund, defensemen Chad Krys, Nicholas Beaudin, Lucas Carlsson, Philip Holm, Adam Boqvist, Joni Tuulola and goaltender Kevin Lankinen.

Shane Gersich Re-Signs With Washington Capitals

May 20, 2019 at 11:19 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Washington Capitals have inked one of their restricted free agents, re-signing Shane Gersich to a one-year, two-way contract. Gersich will earn $700K at the NHL level and $115K in the AHL.

The 22-year old forward was a fifth-round selection of the Capitals in 2014, and signed his entry-level deal last spring after three years at the University of North Dakota. He made his NHL debut down the stretch for the Capitals and even got into two playoff contests during their Stanley Cup run. This season Gersich spent the entire year in the minor leagues with the Hershey Bears, but struggled at times to find much consistency. He finished with 24 points in 66 games, but still has a bright future.

Washington has a dozen other restricted free agents to deal with this offseason, including some high profile names like Jakub Vrana and Andre Burakovsky. Getting deals done for minor league players like Gersich relieves some of the work load, but certainly doesn’t make things easier on GM Brian MacLellan and his team. The salary cap has made life difficult for the Capitals front office in recent years, and they may need to start getting some NHL contributions from young players like Gersich in the near future.

Gersich will be a restricted free agent once again next summer.

Capitals Notes: Carlson, Trotz, Gersich

March 29, 2018 at 6:23 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

If the Capitals intend to re-sign defenseman John Carlson, they are going to be hard-pressed to do so while staying under the salary cap.  In an appearance on NBCSN (transcribed by FanRag’s Chris Nichols), TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the expectation around the league is that the 28-year-old will land a contract between $7MM and $8MM per year and a term between six and eight years.  (Only Washington can sign him for the maximum term of eight seasons.)

The Capitals have more than $63MM tied up in contracts to 15 players for 2018-19 which doesn’t leave them a lot of wiggle room to fit a contract like that for Carlson, even with the Upper Limit increasing a little bit as it is expected to do.  Accordingly, Washington is going to be a team to watch for this summer to see if they make a move to create room (similar to what they did with Marcus Johansson back in July) or whether the leading point getter among NHL blueliners goes elsewhere in the coming months.

More from Washington:

  • Although the Caps are getting closer to locking down another division title, owner Ted Leonsis told reporters, including Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post, that there is still no decision on the future of head coach Barry Trotz. Trotz is in the final year of his contract and while GM Brian MacLellan inked a new deal earlier this season, it doesn’t appear as if any extension has been offered to the bench boss.  It has been speculated previously that Washington’s postseason performance might dictate his future and Leonsis didn’t exactly quash that as he declined to comment on that suggestion, merely saying that it’s “inappropriate” to comment on contracts right now.
  • Rookie winger Shane Gersich made his NHL debut on Wednesday night and Trotz acknowledged to Khurshudyan that he is still undecided on his bottom six group of forwards for the playoffs and that the 21-year-old could work his way into the mix. Unlike a lot of the NCAA signings we’ve seen in recent days, Gersich would be postseason-eligible as he has been on Washington’s reserve list all season long, something that isn’t the case with the undrafted free agents that are signing contracts.

Washington Capitals Sign Shane Gersich To Two-Year Deal

March 23, 2018 at 10:26 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals have signed forward Shane Gersich to his two-year entry-level contract, worth an average annual value of $925K. The deal will start right away and Gersich will join the Capitals on the road in Montreal, meaning that the first year of the deal will be used up in the 2017-18 season. The team has assigned Travis Boyd to the minor leagues to help with the cap ramifications.

Gersich, 21, was selected in the fifth round in 2014, but immediately broke out in the USHL and then continued his success through three years at the University of North Dakota. The 5’11” forward mixes good skating with an incredible work ethic to create offense, even leading a team that included Tyson Jost and Brock Boeser in scoring last season. Though Christian Wolanin took over that mantle this year, Gersich wasn’t far off with 29 points in 40 games.

He’ll get into the lineup right away for the Capitals to try and inject some youth and excitement into a roster that is attempting to lock down first place in the Metropolitan. Though Washington currently sits on top, the surging Blue Jackets and pesky Penguins are still within striking distance.
