Edmonton Expected To Sign Connor McDavid To Eight-Year Extension

Edmonton Oiler fans, breathe, Connor McDavid will be around a while. Though it had been rumored that the young superstar would possibly only take a five year deal to get an even bigger payday at a younger age, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet is hearing that the two are closing in on a deal that will pay him something around $13.25MM per season for the next eight years. McDavid is eligible for an extension on July 1st, and has one year remaining on his current entry-level contract. The extension would kick in for 2018-19. Connor McDavid

Getting McDavid in for eight more seasons is important, as it buys out some extra free agent years. Had he signed for just five, he would have hit the open market at just 26 and likely been in line for an even bigger deal.  Not that there has ever been a bigger deal, as this extension would easily top the largest contracts in the NHL. Currently, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews share the top cap hit at $10.5MM, though certain players do earn more on various individual years of their deals. Anze Kopitar for instance will be paid $14MM this season in real salary, though his cap hit comes in at $10MM.

McDavid is easily the most important young player in the league, fresh off an Art Ross, Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award. His 100 points easily paced the league and at just 20-years old he’s arguably the best player in the world. That said, a deal of this magnitude has ripples all over the league. For his own team, it locks one player into nearly 18% of the current cap and if it stays relatively flat for the next few seasons the Oilers could be in huge trouble. With a big extension due for Leon Draisaitl as well, the team could find themselves in a situation similar to Chicago, who have had to move good young players out consistently in order to keep Toews and Kane on the books.

Elsewhere, teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs are probably pulling their hair out at the news as Auston Matthews will be due an extension next summer. Though he’s not quite the player McDavid is, he actually put up a better rookie season because of health issues and could be in line for a similar deal should he eclipse 40 goals again next season. That’s something that would be tough for any team, but with the Maple Leafs needing to sign Mitch Marner and William Nylander at the same time, money will get short fast.

This is part of a growing trend that is taking hold in the NHL, to lock up your young stars to long-term deals with big cap hits right away. You can see the effects in the free agent market this year, that is littered with players in their mid to late thirties or those that have underperformed for years. It’s why when players like Steven Stamkos get even a sniff of free agency, the entire league goes crazy. We’ll have to see when the final number comes in for McDavid, but rest assured that we won’t see him on the open market for quite some time.

Girardi Drawing Interest After Buy-Out

Although he was just bought out by the New York Rangers due to meager performance relative to his pay, multiple NHL teams have shown interest in signing the 33 year-old. Detroit, who is supposedly in the middle of a rebuild, seem compelled to inquire, according to The Athletic’s Craig Custance. The Grand Rapids Griffins championship run will provide an infusion of youth who have won at the professional level, and yet the defense remains a primary concern for GM Ken Holland. Missing the playoffs for multiple seasons may not be palatable to an organization so accustomed to success. It’s uncertain as to where Girardi would slot if he did sign in Detroit. The Wings have 7 defenseman on the roster (when you include RFA Xavier Ouellet), and 4 of those have no-trade clauses.

Also heavily rumored are the Tampa Bay Lightning. Elliotte Friedman stated that the team reached out to the defender, and that it is unknown how that conversation went. Newsday’s Steve Zipay made the connection to current Bolt Ryan Callahan, himself an ex-New York Ranger, with whom Girardi has close ties. Tampa GM Steve Yzerman does seem to like the old-school defensemen, and the team does have only 4 blueliners under contract while they negotiate terms with Slater Koekkoek. The team was already linked to Kevin Shattenkirk via the Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith, and players such Brendan Smith and Karl Alzner could find a decent fit on a second pairing. There are certainly more marquee names available out there, but perhaps the prices will become too steep for Yzerman’s liking. Girardi would almost certainly come cheap, and Tampa seems destined to make a push in the Atlantic after a down season – so it’s not an undesirable location.

The market that has surfaced for Girardi is quite remarkable considering his circumstances. Girardi has had three consecutive poor possession seasons which crescendo-ed this year with an 8th-worst Corsi 5-0n-5 finish among all defenders. In a league which is heading in the direction of deeper, more encompassing analytics, Girardi seems to buck every trend out there. He is probably still an NHL defender, but his immobile brand of defense is losing effectiveness fast and his shot-blocking may be beginning to take a toll on his body. His skating is sub-par and his offensive capabilities are very limited. He’s a good penalty killer, but at even strength is generally a net-negative regardless of how sheltered his minutes are. Still, as a veteran on a cheap contract, he might be worth a flier to regain form on a short-term deal. With such a poor UFA offering, it seems he has some value left and should be able to find a new contract with little pain.

Calgary Flames Acquire Travis Hamonic From New York Islanders

While the second half of the 2017 draft is underway, the Calgary Flames are working on their NHL squad. The Flames have acquired Travis Hamonic and a conditional 2019 fourth-round pick from the New York Islanders. The draft pick could be pushed to 2020. In return, Calgary will send a 2018 first-round pick, 2018 second-round pick, and a conditional 2019 second-round pick, that could also be pushed to 2020. The conditions depend on another pre-existing trade with Arizona, which could end up in the Coyotes first acquiring the Flames 2019 second-round pick.Travis Hamonic

Hamonic’s name has been in the news for the last few days, with the Islanders holding firm at an ask of two first-round picks. While they didn’t get quite that value, they came very close. The Islanders, who protected five defensemen in the expansion draft, are hoping that Ryan Pulock can make the jump full time next season and replace some of Hamonic’s minutes.

The 26-year old Hamonic has logged at least 20 minutes a night in every year since he debuted as a 20-year old, and is an excellent two-way defensmen capable of contributing at both ends of the rink. His career high of 33 points will be difficult to duplicate in Calgary without extensive powerplay time, but he fills out their top-4 quite nicely.

It would seem now that Michael Stone is no longer in the Flames plans, as the pending free agent would have to take on a third-pairing role. He’s one of the top defenders set to hit the open market even with his injury history, and would likely be looking for a bigger role. After fitting in quite nicely with the Flames down the stretch, they’ll expect even more of Hamonic as the last part of what has become an excellent top-4.

Calgary is paying a lot, but with a team that believes they can compete for the Stanley Cup as soon as this season, they believe that it’s worth it. Hamonic is under contract for three more seasons at a very reasonable $3.86MM, making him an attractive option to any team.

For the Islanders, this does seem to be a trade in the opposite direction as the earlier Jordan Eberle acquisition, but easily could flip the draft picks for more help in the short-term. Either way, getting that much value back for a player who you believe you can replace internally is a a solid move. The Islanders still have an effective defensive group, but also must think about the upcoming extension for John Tavares.

It’s an interesting balance, of building a winning team to entice him to sign, and leaving yourself enough cap space to get him into the salary structure. With Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Shane Prince and Alan Quine all hitting various versions of free agency next season, the Islanders have to spend their money wisely.

Philadelphia Flyers Trade Brayden Schenn To St. Louis

The Philadelphia Flyers pulled off perhaps the biggest shocker of the draft, trading Brayden Schenn to the St. Louis Blues for Jori Lehtera, the 27th-overall pick and a conditional first-round pick next year. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that if the 2018 pick happens to be in the top 10, St. Louis would have the option to push it to 2019. If they do so, Philadelphia would also gain a third-rounder in 2020.

The Flyers used the 27th pick to select Morgan Frost, son of former Maple Leafs in-house announcer Andy Frost and forward from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhouds of the OHL. Frost put up 62 points in 68 games for the Greyhounds but is still very undersized and will need to develop his all-around game.

Lehtera is coming off an extremely disappointing season in St. Louis, in which he scored just 22 points. He’s heading into year two of a contract that pays him $4.7MM per season, a number that hopes he’s more of the 44-point player he showed in his first year. Philadelphia will hope they can turn him back into that, but with a system now flooded with centers after trading for Valtteri Filppula at the deadline and selecting Nolan Patrick tonight, it’s not clear what his role will be.

Schenn though is clearly the prize of the deal, as clearly the best player involved for the time being. Schenn scored 25 goals again last season and has developed into one of the more effective power forwards in the league. He was unstoppable with the man advantage, scoring 28 of his 55 points on the powerplay. Now traded twice before he turns 26, Schenn is locked up for three more seasons at $5.13MM and immediately fills some of the center concerns for the Blues. It was a hefty price to pay, with two firsts going the other way but he’ll help St. Louis in their quest for a Stanley Cup once again next year.

Having Schenn allows the Blues to move Patrik Berglund back down to a third-line center and keep both Vladimir Sobotka and Alex Steen on the wings. That upgrade will make their top-9 one of the best groups in the league.

Snapshots: Oshie, Shattenkirk, Scandella, Kruger

On one of the most exciting days of the year for hockey fans, teams have already made blockbuster deals that include superstars and Stanley Cup champions. They’re not finished just yet, as the Entry Draft is just a few hours away. Already, a report has sprung up surrounding top free agent T.J. Oshie, with Andy Strickland of Fox Sports relaying that the Blackhawks are considering him as a replacement for Artemi Panarin on the Patrick Kane line. While Brandon Saad is expected to rejoin Jonathan Toews, Kane and Artem Anisimov are left without a winger for the time being on the second line.

It seems pretty far-fetched that Chicago would be able to fit Oshie into their salary structure as he’s heading into the offseason as one of the most sought-after scoring threats, but you easily could have said that about the team trading Panarin and Niklas Hjalmarsson earlier today. Oshie scored 33 goals last season playing with Niklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, and has been in talks with the team since the end of the year. When the salary cap didn’t escalate all the way to $77MM, there entered some doubt the Capitals could fit him in, though it’s unclear where those talks currently stand. Oshie becomes a UFA on July 1st.

  • It’s been previously reported that Kevin Shattenkirk would want to play in the Northeast closer to his hometown, and there had been interest from the New York Rangers at the trade deadline in acquiring him. He ended up going to the Capitals, but with the new cap space that has been opened by the Rangers by moving Derek Stepan, fans have their fingers crossed that he could “come home.” Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet poured a dash of cold water on that, saying that he thought Buffalo made more sense given the Rangers hesitation at handing out term to a similar defender in Keith Yandle last year. Yandle would end up being traded to the Florida Panthers and signed a seven-year, $44.5MM deal that would seem to be a target for Shattenkirk’s camp.
  • Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports that the Boston Bruins are the newest team in pursuit of Marco Scandella from the Minnesota Wild. Scandella has been called the most likely defenseman to get traded out of Minnesota, and had previously been linked to the Montreal Canadiens. With the Bruins having a solid future on the right side with Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo, Scandella could fit nicely into the left-side behind Torey Krug. Scandella’s contract at $4MM for three years isn’t terrible, but Boston would have to be careful not to make things too hard on themselves with a big extension for David Pastrnak due this summer.
  • Scott Powers of The Athletic is hearing that Marcus Kruger is once again likely to be traded by the Hawks. When an expansion draft trade never materialized, some believed that perhaps Kruger was safe from the salary cap ax for the time being. After the big moves today, and rumored interest in Oshie, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kruger and his $3.1MM cap hit sent packing.

Artemi Panarin Traded To Columbus Blue Jackets For Brandon Saad

Just moments after the Niklas Hjalmarsson deal, the Chicago Blackhawks have traded Artemi Panarin, Tyler Motte and their 2017 sixth-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Brandon Saad, Anton Forsberg and Columbus’ 2018 fifth-round pick.

In spectacular fashion, the Blackhawks have reunited Saad with his former teammates, something that perhaps pushed along the deal in the first place. Saad won two Stanley Cups with the Hawks before being shipped out of town in one of their cap-saving measures, which interestingly is what brings him back just two years later. Though Panarin and Saad both have a cap hit of $6MM, the “bread man” is signed for only two more years and will be demanding a hefty raise in the summer of 2019. The former Rookie of the Year is a legitimate 70+ point winger in the prime of his career, something that is extremely difficult to find on the open market. Brandon Saad

Saad himself can score 30 goals and is a much more well-rounded player, better defensively and physical. Though he clearly doesn’t have the elite offensive talent of Panarin, he can be a legitimate first-line winger and should slot back in next to Jonathan Toews for the next four seasons. The 24-year old is under contract through 2020-21, meaning they won’t have to worry about re-signing him for an extra couple of years.

Interestingly, the Blackhawks have also found a potential backup goaltender after losing Scott Darling earlier this offseason. Forsberg is clearly ready for an NHL role, but was behind Sergei Bobrovsky and Joonas Korpisalo in Columbus. He comes over as a restricted free agent, and will need a new contract before next season. Motte, the prospect going the other way is an undersized forward who played 33 games for the Hawks this year, struggling to contribute much offensively. Though he had an outstanding season as a junior for the University of Michigan, that same offensive flair hasn’t carried over to his professional play just yet.

Really though this trade comes down to Panarin for Saad, and a move for more cost certainty for the Hawks. They get a former fan favorite back, who is both younger and locked up for a longer term, but deal one of the individually gifted scorers in the entire league. It will be a bittersweet pill to swallow, as fans have gotten used to seeing Panarin and Patrick Kane play games with opposing teams and almost score at will, but perhaps Saad will bring back a more dominant Toews on the top line.

For Columbus, they move out some of the physicality and size to introduce pure skill. While it’s not clear where Panarin will play, adding him to a lineup that already includes Cam Atkinson will be too much to handle for most teams on most nights. They only have him locked up for two more seasons, but with a dominant defensive group, Vezina-winning goaltending and scoring depth on all four lines look like a solid contender for the immediate future.

Early Notes: Tolvanen, Capuano, Hamonic

Top draft prospect Eeli Tolvanen, a Finnish winger who has played hockey in the USHL for the past two years, was expected to go to Boston College in the fall. That will no longer happen, as according to USHR Tolvanen has failed to pass the admission standards for BC and will not be admitted. He’ll instead have to look for an opportunity elsewhere.

The Oshawa Generals own his rights in the CHL, or he could find a home at a lesser university or in Europe. He had been climbing up boards, even ranked 8th among North American skaters by CSS. He finished 17th on Bob McKenzie’s final list for TSN, but may end up in the bottom third of the first round after this news. Though it obviously looked bad from the outside, teams will have a much better insight from their meetings with him.

  • Darren Dreger of TSN confirms something that Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet has been chasing, that Jack Capuano will join the Florida Panthers as an associate coach. Capuano was fired from the New York Islanders midway through the 2016-17 season, the only organization he’s ever coached for. After coming up through the AHL system, Capuano took over in 2010-11 and led the Islanders to three playoff experiences. He’ll take care of the defense and penalty kill in Florida.
  • Discussion around Travis Hamonic continues, with Friedman saying on radio (via Chris Nicholls of FanRag Sports) that the Flames and Leafs are both interested. Friedman believes the Islanders are looking for two first-round picks for the defenseman, who has three years left at a reasonable $3.8MM cap hit. Hamonic’s actual salary is $4.9MM for the next few years, which may deter some teams from going after him.

Snapshots: Coach’s Challenge Penalty, Russell

The NHL is looking at a rule change that would certainly add a new wrinkle to things.  TSN’s Elliotte Friedman tweets that the NHL is kicking around the idea to assess two minute minor penalties to coaches who lose a challenge. Colleague Frank Saravelli tweets that it would be for challenges on offside calls, replace the loss of a timeout, and according to Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell, makes coaches “careful” about when they challenge. The Scores’s Josh Wegman writes that the league is looking for a way to cut down on the number of challenges, as it would make coaches more timid in using that challenge. However, before any rules are changed, both the board of governors and competition committee would have to agree.

  • TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that a deal between defenseman Kris Russell and the Edmonton Oilers could be finalized as soon as tomorrow. He adds that Russell could get close to $4MM AAV for four years. This confirms what was reported earlier in the day, but now includes a duration and dollar amount. Russell played in 68 games for Edmonton and notched a goal and 13 points for them. The 30-year-old defenseman is known less for his statistical contribution and more for his shot blocking abilities.

Latest On Evgeny Dadonov’s NHL Future

Buried in Elliotte Friedman’s always interesting “30 Thoughts” column for Sportsnet last night was one short note about KHL star and free agent Evgeny Dadonov. The 28-year old forward has been linked to several teams since the KHL season ended, most recently the Vegas Golden Knights who had re-opened talks with him to join Vadim Shipachyov for their inaugural season. Friedman reports differently though, saying that Dadonov is getting close with an Eastern Conference team.

Way back in March Friedman had reported that Dadonov was looking for around $3.5MM in the NHL, a number that would be palatable to many teams around the league. The winger put up 66 points in 53 games this season, his fifth since leaving the NHL in the first place. Drafted by the Florida Panthers 71st overall in 2007, Dadonov never could find much success at the highest level but still has tremendous offensive potential. Now slightly bigger than he was as a young player in Florida, perhaps his game is better suited for the league than it was prior to the last lockout.

Among Eastern teams with some interest, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes have all been very tenuously linked to the Russian forward in the past. In our reader poll last month, over 40% voted that he would eventually end up with the Golden Knights, though Toronto and Montreal were second and third respectively.

Though he can play both sides, Dadonov is left handed and would likely need to play his off-wing in Montreal. The Canadiens are loaded on left wing after acquiring Jonathan Drouin, unless one of he or Alex Galchenyuk is moved back to center. The Maple Leafs have a glut of wingers, but would have an opening if a player like James van Riemsdyk was moved out in trade. Either way, with his flexibility Dadonov could find a position somewhere on nearly every roster in the Eastern conference, meaning several teams have probably expressed interest in bringing him aboard. In what will be another instance of a Russian player coming to the NHL this offseason, it’s becoming more and more clear that the reports that Olympic play would be a factor in decisions was more of a negotiating tactic from the KHL than anything else.
