Nikita Nesterov Deciding Between Four Teams, Two Leagues

July 5, 2017 at 11:56 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

When the Montreal Canadiens decided not to qualify Nikita Nesterov, it made him an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team in the league. Now, agent Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey reports that his client’s decision is down to two NHL options and two KHL options. The young defenseman will make a final decision by Saturday.

Nesterov, 24, was never able to find a fit in Montreal after a mid-season trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite pretty solid possession statistics, neither team has been able to trust him much on a regular defensive shift, and because of it he’ll have to find his third team in a young career. You’d think rebuilding clubs would give him a look, and try to develop his two-way game into something of value.

The KHL is a clear option, as Nesterov was drafted out of Chelyabinsk in 2011 and could even have an outside chance at suiting up for Russia at the 2018 Olympics given their relative lack of defensive options. He did play one game at last fall’s World Cup, and with several defensemen—namely Dmitry Orlov, Dmitry Kulikov, Alexei Emelin, Nikita Zaitsev and Andrei Markov—all unlikely to be eligible due to the NHL’s ruling, Nesterov would be pretty high up the charts.

Brian Flynn, Dwight King Will Not Return To Montreal

June 22, 2017 at 2:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

According to Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin, both Brian Flynn and Dwight King will not be re-signed to return to the team next year. The pair are unrestricted free agents on July 1st, and join Nikita Nesterov as players already told they will not be returning.

Flynn has spent the couple of years with the Canadiens after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the 2015 deadline. Though he has been an effective checker, he’s never quite lived up to the hype he had when signed out of the University of Maine. At the time, he was a pretty sought-after forward prospect that many thought would be able to contribute offensively at the NHL level. Instead, he’s only been able to put up 61 points in 275 games.

King is another deadline acquisition, this time from the Los Angeles Kings just a few months ago. The hulking forward was brought in to add some toughness to the lineup and actually has a history as a pretty effective secondary scoring threat. In 2013-14, King put up 15 goals and 30 points.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see both land somewhere in fourth-line roles, especially King who is hitting the open market at 27 and has the size many coaches and GM love to add to their bottom-six forwards.

Montreal Canadiens Will Not Qualify Nikita Nesterov

June 16, 2017 at 10:52 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

In another (perhaps expected) move that will weaken the depth of the Montreal Canadiens defense, the team will not qualify Nikita Nesterov according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, making him an unrestricted free agent at the end of the month. After also trading away Mikhail Sergachev yesterday, it’s clear the team has some other plans for the blueline in 2017-18.

Nesterov never really did fit into the Canadiens schemes after being acquired in January from the Tampa Bay Lightning. In just 13 games for club, he recorded five points but played under 16 minutes a night. The writing seemed to be on the wall when he suited up for just two games in the playoffs for the team. The 24-year old actually is a positive possession player, meaning he’ll likely find a home with a more analytically-leaning front office around the league.

Just this month his agent Dan Milstein announced that Nesterov would like to stay in the NHL, despite the KHL reaching out to try and bring him back to Russia. There does seem to be some upside to Nesterov, but any deal will have to come with very little risk for the team.

The Canadiens continue to be linked to defensemen around the league, and also think highly of the newly acquired Jakub Jerabek. The Czech defender is expected to step right into the NHL and compete for minutes, giving the team another option for the bottom pairing.

Nikita Nesterov Remains Committed To NHL Future

June 8, 2017 at 11:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Despite rumors that he had signed in the KHL because of his appearance on the Traktor Chelyabinsk roster page, Nikita Nesterov still wants to play in the NHL next season. Dan Milstein, Nesterov’s agent with Gold Star, confirmed as much on Twitter today claiming that the rumors were “absolutely false.” Nesterov remains an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent with the Montreal Canadiens.

Nesterov was acquired by the Canadiens in January for Jonathan Racine and a sixth-round pick, but played just 13 games down the stretch and two in the playoffs. The 24-year old has now played 132 games in his short career, and has generally performed well. While he hasn’t become the top-4 defenseman that Tampa Bay hoped at one point, his play does deserve an NHL contract in the future.

A qualifying offer for the defenseman would cost the Canadiens just over $761K, which would also allow them to retain his rights even if he does head to Russia for next season. He is also eligible for selection in the expansion draft, and doesn’t project to be protected by the Canadiens. He’s at little risk of being selected, as there are other defensemen on the team who would be more appetizing for the expansion team. We’ll see if he reaches an agreement with the Canadiens, as they look to reshape their defense with players like Jakub Jerabek.

Canadiens Notes: Nesterov, Pateryn, Desharnais, Markov

January 30, 2017 at 5:00 pm CDT | by Glen Miller 5 Comments

Just before the All-Star break, the Montreal Canadiens pulled off a trade to add needed defensive depth, acquiring Nikita Nesterov for a prospect and late draft choice in 2017. It won’t take long for the team to see what they have in the 23-year-old blue liner as it appears as if he is set to make his Habs debut tomorrow night, tweets Amanda Stein of TSN 690. His new teammate, Andrei Markov, offered a brief scouting report (H/T to the Candiens Twitter account) on Nesterov, saying the latter will be a good fit for the Canadiens and calling him a good skater with a good first pass.

Nesterov contributed 12 points in 35 games for Tampa and recorded solid possession numbers, with the Lighting controlling better than 54% of the shot attempts while he was on the ice. Given his usage – he averaged just 16:35 a night mostly as a third-pair defender – those numbers look even better. If Markov is right, the Canadiens may have added a solid depth piece on the cheap.

In other Canadiens-related news:

  • TSN’s John Lu, via Twitter, updates the injury situations of David Desharnais and Markov. Habs bench boss Michel Therrien indicated both players will be evaluated Tuesday but “both look good” as it pertains to returning to the lineup. Stein adds in another tweet that Therrien wants to sit down with each before making a decision on their availability.
  • Therrien also says Greg Pateryn, who has been out since early December with a fractured ankle, needs more time according to yet an another tweet from Stein. Pateryn’s pending return, with the assumption that Markov will be back this week, creates a bit of a log jam on the blue line and that may well have played a role in the team placing Zach Redmond on waivers earlier today. Even without Redmond the Habs will have eight healthy defensemen for six regular spots.

5 Key Stories: 1/23/17 – 1/29/17

January 29, 2017 at 8:15 pm CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

Congratulations to the members of the Metro Division All-Star team, who capped off an entertaining three-on-three tournament by defeating the Pacific Division 4 – 3. It’s time for PHR’s weekly roundup of the five key stories from the week of 1/23/17 through 1/29/17.

Colorado center Matt Duchene, the subject of trade rumors for much of the season, expressed a willingness to being dealt to another club in comments made to The Denver Post this week. The talented pivot has two years remaining on a contract that comes with an AAV of $6MM and is sure to attract plenty of trade interest. The team is reportedly hoping to land at least a young, top-four defenseman and a high draft pick in return.

The Ottawa Senators added some bottom-six depth by acquiring veteran winger Tommy Wingels from the San Jose Sharks for minor leaguers Zack Stortini and Buddy Robinson along with a seventh-round draft pick. Still just 28, Wingels could prove to be a solid pickup for the Senators. During the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns, the seven-year veteran combined for 31 goals and that’s the kind of production the Senators are hoping for. From the Sharks perspective, the trade cleared needed cap space with Tomas Hertl poised to come off of IR.

Looking for additional defensive depth, the Montreal Canadiens picked up Nikita Nesterov from Tampa Bay in exchange for minor league prospect Jonathan Racine and a sixth-round draft choice. Nesterov has tallied 12 points in 35 games this season and could provide solid value for the Habs as a long-term fit on their blue line. He carries a cap hit of $725K and will be a RFA this summer.

As he draws nearer unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2018, New York Islanders franchise center John Tavares indicated he is open to inking a long-term extension to remain on Long Island despite the team’s struggles this season. It’s not a surprising position for the #1 overall selection in the 2009 draft to take. There’s no point in limiting any option this far from free agency and a lot can change between now and July 1, 2018. Any way you look at it, Tavares is going to land a lucrative long-term deal, whether it’s with the Islanders or another franchise.

Semyon Varlamov, Colorado’s starting goaltender, will miss the rest of the season following surgery to repair a groin injury. Like many of his teammates, the 2016-17 campaign has not been a good one for the Russian netminder and now his season is going to be cut short. Varlamov will have two years remaining on a deal that comes with a $5.9MM cap hit and it will be interesting to see what the Avalanche, already rumored to be considering significant roster changes, do with their goaltending situation.

Lightning Notes: Koekkoek, Callahan, Bishop

January 29, 2017 at 3:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After trading Nikita Nesterov the other day to the Montreal Canadiens for a relatively small return, some thought that it would open the door for Slater Koekkoek’s return to the team. Don’t count on it, as Steve Yzerman told Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times yesterday.

He’s an important part of our future, and I see a very bright future for him still. So if we need a left shot or we feel Slater will come up and play a lot, then I’ll bring him back up.

That’s a good point when it comes to the former 10th-overall pick. If he’s not going to play big minutes with the club, it may be better for his development to stay in the AHL. With Victor Hedman, Jason Garrison and Braydon Coburn locked into the left-side, it doesn’t seem like there would be a lot of time for him.

  • The team is looking to pull off more moves in the near future, but one player that hasn’t been approached yet is Ryan Callahan. The injured alternate captain has just four points this season and holds a full no-movement clause in his contract. That means he’ll force protection in the upcoming expansion draft, a spot that the Lightning could really use for a different player. Players can opt to waive their NMC in order to be exposed at the draft, but since they’ve earned the right to have it in their contracts it’s hard to ask them.
  • Smith says that the team does want to move Ben Bishop if possible before losing him for nothing this summer. The upcoming free agent has had a season troubled by injuries and inconsistency but still represents a potential upgrade in net for many contenders. A two-time finalist for the Vezina trophy, Bishop holds a career .919 save percentage.
  • One of the reasons for the Nesterov trade apparently was Luke Witkowski, who the team didn’t want to lose on waivers. Instead they dealt Nesterov, who would have been a restricted free agent this summer for a team that will have a real cap crunch. Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Jonathan Drouin will all need new deals this summer.

Snapshots: Olympics, Waivers, Hurricanes Sale

January 28, 2017 at 2:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

In what proved to be a short meeting, the NHL Board of Governors met today to discuss the 2018 Olympics and whether the league will be participating. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly reported to Frank Seravalli of TSN that the meeting lasted just ten seconds, and said there was nothing new to report.

It’s looking more and more like the league will not be headed to the Pyeong Chang games, though some players have expressed that they will go regardless of the league’s decision. It’s hard to imagine players like Alex Ovechkin leaving their team in the middle of the season, but it may come to that. For his part, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has said he would support his superstar winger if he did decide to go against the NHL’s wishes.

  • Erik Erlendsson of Lightning Insider reports that Michael Bournival and Gabriel Dumont have both cleared waivers today, though both are currently still with the NHL team. The two player transaction represents the latest in what will be a busy few weeks for GM Steve Yzerman. Starting on Thursday, what some believe may become a fire-sale kicked off with the dealing of Nikita Nesterov to the Montreal Canadiens. The team has a lot more work to do as it works to protect itself from the expansion draft.
  • Tampa has also re-assigned Jake Dotchin back to the AHL according to Bryan Burns of NHL.com, oddly enough without any mention of Bournival or Dumont. Perhaps something is brewing with the recently waived forwards. Dotchin has played three games for the Lightning this year and was held scoreless.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos told Pierre LeBrun of ESPN that he’s now willing to sell the entire franchise, not just a part of it as previously reported. Karmanos has been looking for a buyer for a while now, but has previously been quoted as saying he would guarantee it stays in North Carolina. Obviously, if he were to sell the entire thing he wouldn’t be able to make that guarantee, though he could refuse to make a deal with anyone planning on a relocation. With the Canes floundering at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and still unable to draw a decent crowd each night, perhaps relocation does fall in their future. For now, we’ll keep an eye on any potential buyers the team may be in contact with.

Montreal Canadiens Acquire Nikita Nesterov From Tampa Bay Lightning

January 26, 2017 at 6:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning have completed a trade Thursday evening, which will see defenseman Nikita Nesterov head to Montreal in return for Jonathan Racine and a 6th round pick.

The 23-year old Nesterov signed a one-year deal with the Lightning this summer as a restricted free agent after playing in 57 games with the team last season. In 35 games this year he’s put up 12 points in 35 games playing on the team’s bottom pairing. After playing for Russia at the World Cup, he hasn’t quite been able to show that he’s deserved of big minutes at this point in his career.

Montreal has been looking for someone to add some depth to the back end of their defense corps for a while, which Nesterov will now do admirably. Racine had been one of the players they hoped could make the leap this year after acquiring him for Tim Bozon from the Florida Panthers this summer. He hasn’t made much of an impact at the AHL level and is slowly falling away from prospect status. The former third-round pick will turn 24 in May and has played in just one NHL game, back in 2013-14.

For Tampa, they had a tough summer ahead of them with no less than 20 RFAs to sign (though the minor league veterans aren’t really a problem). Nesterov likely would have needed a slight upgrade from the $725,000 he is earning this season, money which the Lightning simply won’t have.

As we wrote the other day, the team has some issues in front of them going into the expansion draft, so consider this the first move of a possible series before next month’s trade deadline. With some forwards at risk of selection, the team might still be open to moving a player off their top few lines.

Minor Transactions: 1/11/2017

January 11, 2017 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

There has been a flurry of roster transactions so far today with several players recalled from or reassigned to the minor leagues. We’ll keep track of those moves in this post:

  • According to Eric Stephens of The Orange County Register, the Anaheim Ducks recalled forward Stefan Noesen and blue liner Shea Theodore from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. In a corresponding move, defenseman Brandon Montour was reassigned to the Gulls. Montour made his NHL debut after initially being recalled on December 28th though he failed to register a point in five appearances. Noesen has one goal on the campaign in seven games while Theodore has a goal and five assists in 21 contests this season for Anaheim.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News tweeted this morning that Jamie Oleksiak is dealing with a hand injury and will likely be “out for a bit.” He goes on to say that fellow defenseman Stephen Johns will take Oleksiak’s spot in the lineup for tomorrow’s game at home against Detroit. With eight defensemen on the roster – Patrik Nemeth is currently playing for the AHL Texas Stars on a conditioning assignment though remains on Dallas’ official roster – no call-up is expected to be made. In a later tweet, Heika adds that with Texas playing at home, Stars head coach Lindy Ruff would easily be able to bring Nemeth back from his assignment if necessary.
  • After adding forward Derek Grant via waiver claim from Buffalo today, the Nashville Predators reassigned fellow forward Frederick Gaudreau to Milwaukee of the AHL, according to The Tennessean’s Adam Vingan. The 23-year-old rookie has made nine appearances for Nashville this season, the first NHL action of Gaudreau’s career, and has tallied a single assist. In 24 contests with the Milwaukee Admirals, Gaudreau has netted five goals and 14 points. Vingan speculated that Gaudreau’s reassignment might indicate that either James Neal or Colin Wilson could be ready to return to the lineup. Neal was placed on IR retroactive to 1/3 and is currently eligible to be activated. Wilson last played on 1/6.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled blue liner David Warsofsky from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton while reassigning net minder Tristan Jarry to the Baby Pens. Jason Mackey, who covers the club for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reported on the moves and added that with Jarry back to the minors, Matt Murray should be ready to at least serve as Marc-Andre Fleury’s back-up for tonight’s game against Washington.
  • Defenseman Slater Koekkoek and goalie Kristers Gudlevskis were both returned to the AHL Syracuse Crunch, Tampa Bay’s top minor league affiliate, tweets Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Koekkoek’s assignment might seem odd on the surface as the blue liner had appeared in 12 of the last 13 Lightning games. But, as Smith points out, Koekkoek does not need to clear waivers to be sent to the minors while fellow defenders Luke Witkowski and Nikita Nesterov do.
  • The Washington Capitals announced they have sent forwards Paul Carey and Liam O’Brien to Hershey of the AHL, according to the team’s official Twitter account. The assignments leave the team with just 12 forwards on the active roster, a fact that suggests T.J. Oshie will be back in the Caps lineup tonight. That was later confirmed by Capitals head coach Barry Trotz.
  • Two days after sending the fourth overall selection in the June entry draft, Jesse Puljujarvi, to Bakersfield the Edmonton Oilers have assigned fellow forward Anton Lander to the same club. Called up from the Condors was forward Jujhar Khaira, who has eight goals and 18 points in 24 AHL games this season.
