Carolina Signs Justin Williams To Two-Year Deal

Justin Williams is headed back to the Carolina Hurricanes on a two-year deal. TSN’s Aaron Ward tweets that the Hurricanes are bringing back Mr. Game 7, who spent five seasons with the ’Canes before being dealt to the LA Kings during the 2008-09 season. From there Williams won two Cups with the Kings and then signed with the Washington Capitals in 2015. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2014. The Hurricanes announced that the deal is worth $9MM, with Williams being paid $5MM in 2017-18 and then $4MM in 2018-19.

The 35-year-old winger seems to get better with age, putting up 24 goals this past year with the Capitals, albeit on a great offensive squad. Those 24 goals are his highest totals since the 2006-07 season when he was with the Hurricanes. He has become known as a clutch performer, especially in the playoffs. His consistency as both a goal-scorer and a passer remain the top reasons that a team would offer that type of money at his age.

On top of that, his playoff experience stands out, having won three Stanley Cup titles, including the 2014 playoffs when he scored 25 points in 26 games. Williams brings veteran leadership to a young Canes team looking to make some noise this season in the East. With a slew of signings and trades that saw them add Scott Darling in net, Carolina is positioning themselves to take a step forward.

PHR ranked Williams as the seventh best free agent, and had him receiving a two-year deal at $6.5MM.

 

 

 

Brock McGinn, Philip Samuelsson Re-Sign With Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed a couple of young players, inking Brock McGinn and Philip Samuelsson to two and one-year contracts respectively. McGinn’s contract is one-way and will pay him $875K in 2017-18, and $900K in 2018-19, while Samuelsson will earn $650K at the NHL level on a two-way deal.

McGinn, 23, spent most of the season in Carolina this year and registered 16 points in 57 games. The 47th-overall pick from 2012 has turned into a pretty good bottom-six player, and will look to continue his development as an offensive player. In nine AHL contests he recorded eight points, and will likely spend the whole season in the NHL next year.

Though Carolina is looking for a more substantial upgrade to their forward group this summer, getting McGinn under contract for such a low number was an important first step. Carolina isn’t a cap team by any means, as they operate under an internal budget that is far lower than the $75MM number that other teams push up to. Getting a useful NHL piece for under $1MM is a good start to an important offseason. If the team wants to take the next step forward and start competing, some more money will have to be shelled out up front. That means cheap contracts like McGinn will have to fill up the depth roles while still seeing substantial ice time.

Samuelsson, 25, isn’t much of an NHL option at this point but does provide plenty of depth for the Charlotte Checkers. The son of former Checkers’ head coach Ulf Samuelsson—who is now in Chicago as an assistant coach—Philip came over from the Montreal Canadiens system in a mid-season trade for Keegan Lowe. The second-round pick hasn’t made much of an impact at the NHL level, playing in just 13 games over his career and being held pointless in all of them. He does provide a good two-way option for Charlotte, who will look to get back into the playoffs after an early round 1 exit this season.

CHL 2017 Import Draft Results

The CHL is holding its annual import draft today, where teams from across the Canadian junior leagues get to select the rights to players around the world. Often these are recently drafted prospects, or those seen to have good chances at next year’s draft. Being selected has no guarantee that the player will actually ever suit up for the team, as Klim Kostin (the 31st-overall pick in this year’s NHL entry draft) has made very clear. Kostin was selected first-overall in the import draft last year, but has said that he has no intention of ever playing for the Kootenay Ice, instead hoping to play in the AHL or NHL next season.

Sometimes though, you can get an immense talent. Nico Hischier was selected sixth-overall by Halifax last season, and quickly rose to the first-overall pick in the 2017 Entry Draft. Mikhail Sergachev was also selected sixth in the 2015 draft before eventually being the return for Jonathan Drouin this summer. To be sure, there will be a name or two out of this year’s draft to make a huge impact in the NHL. Each team can only carry two import players on the roster, meaning many will pass on the opportunity to select another one. Carolina Hurricanes Sign Patrick Brown, Jake Chelios

The Carolina Hurricanes have gotten things started on the next day of pre-free agency signing, inking Patrick Brown to a one-year, two-way contract that will see him earn $650K at the NHL level. Brown was set to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent, which was explained yesterday by our own Mike Furlano. The team also signed restricted free agent Jake Chelios to a one-year two-way deal, worth $650K at the NHL level.

The 25-year old Brown split time between Charlotte and Carolina for the third straight season in 2016-17, but was held scoreless in 14 NHL games. He has just two points in 28 career games, but has been given very little chance during his call-ups. The former Boston College star signed with the Hurricanes out of school, but has still yet to make much of an impact even at the minor league level.

Brown will likely once again see time bouncing up and down, but this time he is no longer waiver exempt. That means he’ll have to pass through it every time and though he doesn’t seem like a strong candidate to be claimed, it does lessen his usefulness in that role.

Chelios on the other hand is a 26-year old defenseman and has yet to make his NHL debut. The former Michigan State grad has found pretty substantial success the last couple of years in the AHL, and could potentially be a depth call-up at some point. With 32 points in 76 games for Charlotte last season, he’ll return trying to help them get back to the playoffs and compete for a Calder Cup. Chelios is of course the son of former Montreal, Chicago and Detroit great Chris Chelios, who played 1,651 NHL contests in his Hall of Fame career.

Trevor Carrick Re-Signs With Carolina Hurricanes

After reaching a deal with pending unrestricted free agent Derek Ryan earlier today, the Carolina Hurricanes have also inked RFA defensman Trevor Carrick to a one-year, two-way contract. Carrick will earn $670K at the NHL level, and just $77.5K in the AHL.

Carrick, 22, was a fourth-round pick of the Hurricanes in 2012 and has yet to make a real impact at the NHL level. In 57 games this season with Charlotte of the American Hockey League, the former Mississauga Steelheads defenseman scored 16 points. Actually considered more of an offensive threat, Carrick seemed to take a slight step backwards this year and missed time with injuries.

The Hurricanes will hope he can take another step forward and develop into a depth defenseman capable of logging some games in the NHL next season. With the team acquiring Trevor van Riemsdyk after the expansion draft, it is still expected that they move some of their defensive depth to improve at forward.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Derek Ryan

As we inch closer to July 1st and free agent frenzy opening up, another interesting name has been taking off the market. Derek Ryan has re-signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, inking a one-year contract that will pay him $1.425MM in 2017-18. Derek Ryan

Ryan, 30, is one of the rare examples of a player breaking into the NHL after years and years struggling to find professional work. Undrafted out of the WHL, Ryan headed for the University of Alberta, playing in the Canadian Intercollegiate Sports (CIS) league, one not considered an option for professional prospects. After graduating, he took his game overseas and joined the top Austrian league, dominating as an offensive dynamo for three seasons.

After being given a chance in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2014-15, and coming away with 60 points in 55 games, the Hurricanes gave him a chance and signed him to a one-year two-way contract. Again Ryan showed his offensive chops, easily leading the Charlotte Checkers in scoring and even getting into six games in the NHL. This past year, Ryan became a full-time player for Carolina and registered 29 points in 63 games.

Against all odds and overlooked for perhaps his entire career, Ryan will play on the first one-way NHL contract of his life next season. The 5’11” forward would have been a sneaky-good offensive pickup for any team looking to add secondary scoring, but he’ll remain with the only team to ever give him a chance. Turning 31 in December, he’ll command even more leverage next season if he can prove that his offensive ability can be a consistent plus for an NHL team on a nightly basis.

Metropolitan Snapshots: Grubauer, Kovalchuk, Ryan

Not that there are a lot of starting goaltending options available, but the Washington Capitals may have to move their backup Philipp Grubauer after all. With the impending defensive losses of free agents Kevin Shattenkirk and Karl Alzner, who the team likely cannot afford after the team locked up T.J. Oshie to an eight-year deal, and the loss of 25-year-old top-four defender Nate Schmidt to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft, the team must find a way to replace their blueliners.

With cap room almost entirely used up and with several restricted free agents still to lock up, the Capitals have only two places to look to fill those holes – either from within or via trade, according to J.J. Regan of CSN Mid-Atlantic. The team still retains several key defensemen, including restricted free agent Dmitry Orlov, veterans Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen as well as John Carlson. From within, the team has 22-year-old Madison Bowey on hand, who might be ready to make the jump to the NHL. He was out with an ankle injury and missed a lot of the AHL season a year ago, but still had 14 points in 34 games. Still, he may not be the player you count on to jump onto a playoff team’s defensive line.

Therefore, the lack of depth on defense could easily force the team to move Grubauer, who was often talked about as an expansion candidate for the Golden Knights. However, since Grubauer has little chance to grab a starting gig in Washington and isn’t even the future of the franchise as that role likely belongs to 2015 first-round pick Ilya Samsonov. There are still several teams who need a quality, young goaltender and they may be able to offer an inexpensive blueliner to fill Washington’s needs.

  • While there have been dozens of teams linked to Ilya Kovalchuk over the past two months since he announced he’d like to return to the NHL, the Columbus Blue Jackets are one team that have shown interest in the 34-year-old Russian winger. However, while that interest still exists, Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline tweets that the team, as of today, are not in full pursuit of Kovalchuk, and are currently searching for a Top-6 center to fill in the gap.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes are closing in to signing Derek Ryan to one-year deal, tweets Edmonton Oilers radio analyst Bob Stauffer. Ryan, was a Masterson Trophy finalist this past year, which goes to a player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey. At age 30, the center finally broke through into the NHL after years of playing in Europe and the AHL, finishing the season with 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points and being credited for helping change the culture of the Hurricanes locker room. He is coming off a one-year, $600,000 contract and looks to be getting a solid raise.
