Travis Zajac Signs One-Day Contract With Devils, Announces Retirement

New Jersey, he’ll always be a Devil. Travis Zajac has signed a one-day contract with the New Jersey Devils before announcing his retirement from a playing career that lasted more than 1,000 games. Zajac will remain with the Devils organization in an on/off-ice player development and consulting role, while also working to grow the club’s youth hockey initiatives. The veteran forward thanked everyone along the way, while Devils managing partner David Blitzer released a statement as well:

During his 15-year NHL career, Travis Zajac’s consistent preparation, commitment and performance epitomized what it meant to be a New Jersey Devil. Win or lose, Travis’ teammates, coaches and fans could always count on him to play the right way.  I am thrilled that Travis, his wife Nicole and their children will continue to make New Jersey their home, and they will be a valued part of the Devils organization moving forward.

Originally selected 20th overall in 2004, Zajac would be in the NHL full-time by 2006-07 and never look back. He scored 17 goals and 42 points that rookie season, numbers that would seem routine for him over the next decade. He reached a career-high of 25 goals and 67 points in the 2009-10 season and racked up 552 points in 1,037 career regular season games. All but 13 of those came with the Devils organization, though Zajac did have a short sojourn with the New York Islanders earlier this year, as GM Lou Lamoriello, who drafted him so many years ago, acquired the 36-year-old forward for a playoff run.

Despite having so much personal success, Zajac actually didn’t get that many chances to suit up in the postseason. He managed just 71 playoff games over his long career, only once going deep–the Stanley Cup Finals in 2012. A reliable two-way presence, he did receive Selke Trophy votes in seven different seasons, finishing sixth in 2010.

Now hanging up his skates, he’ll join the same Devils organization that has always been his home and help the next wave of talent reach the NHL.

New York Islanders Acquire Kyle Palmieri, Travis Zajac

The first major deal of the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline has landed, and while it is a big move, it should not come as much of a shock. The New York Islanders, seeking a replacement for the scoring and leadership lost by captain Anders Lee’s season-ending injury, have added both in a trade with the Devils, acquiring veteran forwards Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac. The trade, as first reported by The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, marks the second season in a row that the Isles have acquired a career-Devil from their cross-town rivals, as Zajac will reunite with long-time teammate Andy Greene in New York. Both Palmieri and Zajac are immediately available to the Islanders due to their nearby locale and are expected to join the team tomorrow.

As one can imagine, the trade return for the Devils is substantial, even in a buyer’s market. In exchange for their two core forwards and 50% retention on both salaries, New Jersey receives the Islanders’ 2021 first-round pick, a conditional 2022 fourth-round pick, and young forwards A.J. Greer and Mason Jobst. The conditions one the second pick is as follows: if New York reaches the Stanley Cup Final this season, the fourth-rounder becomes a third-rounder and the Devils can choose if they would like it to be in the 2022 or 2023 draft.

This trade obviously has the fingerprints of Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello all over it. The veteran executive was the GM of the Devils when Zajac was drafted in 2004. He tried to re-acquire the two-way center last season, but Zajac would not waive his No-Movement Clause. This time around, with his contract set to expire, Zajac is willing to finally move on from the Devils in pursuit of a Stanley Cup, especially when he’ll be joined by some familiar faces. After giving up a second-round pick for Greene last year, Lamoriello did not hesitate to go back to the well in New Jersey and offer up a first for Zajac and Palmieri. He also may have played to the home crowd somewhat, adding a Long Island native in Palmieri. The 78-year-old GM is all in this year, and making the fans happy along the way.

Just what are the Islanders getting in this deal? For starters, they are adding over 1,600 NHL games of experience to the lineup, an element that can’t be understated for a contender. It certainly will help to make up for the loss of Lee in the leadership department. Offensively, neither Palmieri nor Zajac have been at their best this season, but they are still top-five scorers for the Devils with 15 goals and 35 points between them. Palmieri was considered one of the top targets on the market even in a down season and playing with any of the Islander’s three top-notch centers, especially Mathew Barzal, should help his scoring to improve. Zajac is the perfect fit for head coach Barry Trotz’ conservative system as a smart, measured, two-way forward. Where exactly he fits in the lineup on a deep roster remains to be seen. The Islanders will have to figure out what works best with their many possible line combinations, but for now Palmieri and Zajac will bump Oliver Wahlstrom and Kieffer Bellows from the active roster. An underrated part of this trade from the Islanders standpoint is the retained salary. With only half of Palmieri’s and Zajac’s contracts contributing to the cap payroll, the Devils are still left with about $3MM in Long-Term Injured Reserve space, enough room to make another acquisition if they so choose.

As for the Devils, they land a coveted first-round pick – an asset that is expected to be hard to come by for sellers this season. GM Tom Fitzgerald knew that the Islanders had no second-rounder to spare because he had already acquired last season in the Greene deal, so knew a first-rounder would have to be in play if the Islanders wanted Palmieri. Adding Zajac and retaining salary certainly helped the cause, but in the big picture it is well worth it to add another top prospect to the New Jersey rebuild. As for the players in the package, they aren’t flashy names or long-term building blocks, but could be nice depth additions if the Devils decide to hold on to them. Jobst has yet to get going in the pros with 15 points in 50 AHL games, but was a Hobey Baker candidate at Ohio State and scored at will in his college career. Undersized and already 27 years old, Jobst isn’t exactly a prospect and is on an expiring contract, but could be a good depth forward if New Jersey gives him a chance to translate his game to the top level. Greer, 24, was a second-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2015 and already has 37 NHL games and over 200 AHL games to his credit. Greer plays with size and energy but has also shown a scoring touch in the minors, making him a valuable substitute who can contribute in any role. The impending RFA has not proven himself to be an NHL regular just yet, but should have an opportunity with New Jersey down the stretch to prove he is worth a new contract and an extended look.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is given out annually to the NHL player who exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The award has been voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association since 1968, and today they announced their nominees for 2019.

Metropolitan Notes: Penguins, Zajac, Clutterbuck

If Penguins GM Jim Rutherford has his way, there is another trade to come for Pittsburgh.  Speaking with NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger, he indicated that he’d like to try to add another forward to add some more balance to their top-12.  With their remaining cap room, another big addition is unlikely but someone to contribute on their third or fourth line would give them a small boost and hedge against injury trouble, something the team is quite familiar with this season.

One possible trade chip they have is goaltender Casey DeSmith who has played well this season for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton while posting a .917 save percentage over his two seasons with the Penguins.  However, Rutherford stated that he has no intention of moving DeSmith (or one of his current NHL goalies) and instead will keep the 28-year-old as insurance.

  • With the Devils clearly selling, some have speculated if center Travis Zajac may be willing to reconsider his previous unwillingness to waive his no-move clause. However, he told Abbey Mastracco of The Bergen Record that right now, he wants to remain with the team while interim GM Tom Fitzgerald indicated that the veteran isn’t going anywhere.  The 34-year-old has spent the entirety of his 14-year NHL career in New Jersey and still has one year left on his contract after this one with a $5.75MM AAV.
  • The Islanders appear to be closer to getting one of their veteran forwards back in the lineup. Newsday’s Andrew Gross notes that the team hopes that winger Cal Clutterbuck will be able to return to practice by Monday.  He has been out for the last two months due to a wrist injury and him potentially practicing over the next few days is a good sign that he could be nearing a return.  While the 32-year-old isn’t a big offensive producer, he is one of the most physical forwards in the league and is one of their most-used penalty killers.

Travis Zajac Not Currently Willing To Waive No-Trade Clause

When Travis Zajac and his representatives negotiated the eight-year, $46MM contract extension that he is currently playing under, they not only landed him long-term financial security but also a full no-trade clause throughout. That guaranteed that the two-way forward would be able to stay in one spot for nearly his whole career if he wanted to. Now, it seems he has exercised that right.

Zajac’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, recently told Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that the New Jersey Devils approached the veteran forward with a potential deal but that he was not willing to waive his no-trade clause right now. Overhardt explained “we’ll see about the future after the season,” indicating that Zajac doesn’t want to go anywhere at the moment. At the end of the season, Zajac will be 35 and have one year remaining on his contract, which carries a $5.75MM cap hit.

Though there is no confirmation which team was involved, Friedman speculates that it was likely the New York Islanders, who are currently run by the same man who extended Zajac in the first place, Lou Lamoriello. The Islanders are in third place in the Metropolitan Division and could use another responsible forward to plug into Barry Trotz’ lineup, especially one with such a reliable history.

Zajac has averaged just under 45 points per 82 games throughout his career, reaching the 40-point threshold eight different times. Only once has he played at least 75 games in a season and not scored 40, and last year saw him reach his highest goal total in a decade. While he hasn’t found the same offensive touch this season, his 19 points in 48 games still rank sixth among Devils’ forwards.

It’s not necessarily his offense that would make him a fit in New York however. An excellent faceoff man throughout the years, Zajac has also received Selke Trophy votes as one of the best defensive players in the league on eight different occasions. For a team that is committed to protecting their goal first, that kind of play is respected.

Still, it doesn’t seem like it will happen this season if Overhardt speaks truthfully for his client. The Devils will have to look for another way to gather assets at the trade deadline, and revisit a Zajac trade in the summer.

Snapshots: MacArthur, Predators, Matthews, Zajac

Clarke MacArthur failed his physical before the season, and according to GM Pierre Dorion on TSN radio he likely won’t be playing at all this year. MacArthur is not with the team and has moved to Florida, which could signal the disappointing end to a solid career.

MacArthur came back for the Senators just before the playoffs last year, and was an integral part of their run to game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals. His career was derailed by head injuries, but he was once a consistent offensive producer and reliable top-six winger. In 552 games he scored 304 points. Dorion did admit that they’d look at bringing him back in should he want to play next season, as he’s under contract for $4.65MM per season through 2019-20. More likely he’ll spend the next few seasons on long-term injured reserve.

  • The Nashville Predators also have some bad news when it comes to injuries, as the team announced Yannick Weber and Scott Hartnell would each be out several weeks with their respective injuries. While Nick Bonino is back from his injured reserve stint, losing Weber and Hartnell will put some more stress on the Predators’ depth chart. Luckily, the team already relies so heavily on their top three defensemen that Weber’s role shouldn’t be too difficult to fill. While Hartnell is a bit tougher, there are several young wingers ready to step into the situation.
  • The New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs could each get a boost to their forward group when they meet on Thursday night, as both Travis Zajac and Auston Matthews have a chance to play. Zajac was back at practice centering the top line for the Devils today, while Matthews was on the ice for an hour with a few teammates despite being given the day off. The Devils and Maple Leafs each have 24 points through the first part of the season, and it should be a good matchup on Thursday especially if both get their top centers back.

Travis Zajac Well Ahead Of Schedule, Expected To Return Next Week

It appears that the Devils will be getting center Travis Zajac back a lot earlier than originally anticipated.  He underwent surgery on August 17th to repair a torn pectoral muscle and was supposed to miss between four-to-six months.  However, the team announced via Twitter that Zajac has been cleared to return to practice and that he should suit up sometime next week.

The Penguins won 4-1.Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsZajac’s return would be a big boost for a New Jersey team that has been one of the more pleasant surprises in the early going this season.  He has been one of their more consistent players in recent years that plays in all situations while routinely being above average at the faceoff dot.

Once cleared to return, the Devils will be an enviable team when it comes to their depth down the middle.  2017 top pick Nico Hischier has adapted nicely in his rookie campaign while Adam Henrique has skated as their other top-six center so far.  Brian Boyle recently returned to the lineup after battling leukemia while Blake Coleman has handled the fourth line duties nicely.  They also have Pavel Zacha who is out the outside looking in at a lineup spot at the moment plus Marcus Johansson (who can play all three forward positions) although he’s out with a concussion.  When everyone is healthy, that’s one of the deeper groups in the league and that type of depth could potentially be used to make a move or two as we get closer to the trade deadline.

New Jersey also received good news regarding 2016 first rounder Michael McLeod.  Andrew Gross of The Record notes that the 19-year-old has also been cleared to return to practice.  He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee back on October 12th.  Head coach John Hynes acknowledged to Gross (Twitter link) that no decision has been made yet as to whether or not he will play with the Devils or be returned to his junior team, the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads.

Metropolitan Notes: Bratt, Calvert, Letang, Wennberg

A lot has been made this season of the impressive play of the New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt, who has gone from a training camp surprise to a major piece to the team’s success in a couple of months. The 19-year-old winger, who was drafted in the sixth round in 2016, shouldn’t be this successful at this point in his career, but the youngster has really improved in a short amount of time since coming over from Sweden this offseason.

Now with injuries to Kyle Palmieri and Marcus Johansson as well as the training camp injury to Travis Zajac, the team needs Bratt more than ever, who has now moved to the team’s second line, according to The Record’s Andrew Gross. He currently has five goals and six assists in 12 games. His ability to adapt quickly has impressed his teammates and coaches.

“I think he’s really been able to come in and fill a role in your quote-unquote top six but power play, penalty kill,” coach John Hynes said. “That’s a big void, without Kyle, without Johansson, without Travis, not only are those guys huge factors five on five but they all play such a key element on special teams, both power play and penalty kill. Jesper’s come in and done a good job. I think he’s alleviated some of those losses.”

  • Columbus Blue Jackets’ Matt Calvert has left the team’s road trip and is returning to Columbus after sustaining a big hit in the third period of Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline (subscription required). He is listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury. The injury came when Lightning defender Dan Girardi knocked Calvert off his skates with a shoulder-to-shoulder hit that knocked his helmet off and slammed him into the boards.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins defensive combination of Kris Letang and Olli Matta had to be broken up Saturday in their 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks as the pair struggled together. In fact, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette’s Jason Mackey, Letang struggled immensely in the game and was on the ice for all four goals against. He now has a minus-16 plus/minus rating this season, which is way below average for the 30-year-old veteran. Maatta is at minus-five.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets’ Alexander Wennberg’s struggles to put the puck in the net continue as he now has had just two goals in 34 games dating back to last season, according to The Hockey Writers Mark Scheig. Wennberg, who had a promising season last year with 13 goals and 46 assists has just one goal in eight games this season. While the 23-year-old is more of a passer, the team could use more goals from the third-year center.

Injury Updates: Zajac, Connolly, Miller, Vatanen, Teravainen

While he is still a long way from returning to the lineup, Devils center Travis Zajac took a step forward in his recovery on Friday in the morning skate for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle back in mid-August.  However, head coach John Hynes was quick to caution to Andrew Gross of The Record that he still has a long way to go and that there’s no updated timeframe yet for his return.  At the time of the surgery, Zajac was expected to miss four-to-six months but if he doesn’t experience any setbacks as he begins to skate, he could potentially push to be back for the shorter end of that timeline.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • The Capitals will likely be without winger Brett Connolly for at least the next two games as he has been placed into concussion protocol, notes Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post. Anthony Peluso, who was recalled yesterday, is likely to take his spot on the roster while Tyler Graovac (upper-body injury) was transferred to injured reserve.
  • The Ducks have activated goaltender Ryan Miller off IR, reports Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register. The netminder is expected to serve as the backup tonight and then potentially make his first start of the season on Sunday.  Miller is in his first season with Anaheim after signing a two-year deal with them in free agency but suffered a wrist injury in the preseason and has yet to suit up in a regular season game in 2017-18.
  • Also coming off the IR in Anaheim is blueliner Sami Vatanen, Stephens notes in the same column. He has missed the entire season so far after undergoing surgery in May to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.  His return to the Ducks’ lineup comes at a great time with Cam Fowler (knee) and Kevin Bieksa (hand) both dealing with injuries.
  • After leaving Friday’s game with an upper-body injury, Hurricanes winger Teuvo Teravainen will skate Sunday morning and is listed as a game-time decision for their game against Anaheim, the team announced (via Twitter). Teravainen is off to a nice start in his second season with Carolina, recording five points in the first nine games of the season which ranks him tied for third on the team.
