Interest Remains High In Acquiring Artemi Panarin

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Artemi Panarin is one of the more talented forwards in the NHL and every other team in the league would like to own his services. For a while this off-season, it seemed highly likely that he would indeed move to another club, after rejecting an initial extension offer from the Blue Jackets. Panarin also set an ultimatum for further contract negotiations – a date that passed last week – before which many expected either a new deal or a trade. Yet, neither has come and GM Jarmo Kekalainen has expressed that he never took Panarin’s deadline into account and planned on working through negotiations all the way until July 1st, when the scoring winger will become an unrestricted free agent. That sentiment would seem to indicate that Kekalainen has no plans to trade Panarin this season.

Not so fast. On TSN’s “Insider Trading”, Darren Dreger reported that Kekalainen continues to field many trade calls for the talented forward. Despite teams currently focused on training camp and getting their opening night rosters set and ready to go, interest has not dropped off in acquiring Panarin. The Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks and more have been linked to Panarin this summer and it is easy to imagine that all of those teams and other dark horse candidates continue to keep an eye on his status. Landing a player of Panarin’s caliber, especially with an extension attached, could be a franchise-altering move.

Nevertheless, Dreger adds that Kekalainen is not interested in trading Panarin – though time may eventually force his hand – and right now says “his principle point of interest is trying to convince him to re-sign.” It doesn’t sound as though Panarin’s mind has changed at all and it has been all quiet from his camp for some time. Perhaps he will be convinced to stay in Columbus over another successful campaign or perhaps Kekalainen will get a godfather offer too good to refuse. One way or another, the continued trade interest and extension determination from Columbus make it overwhelmingly likely that one of these two outcomes will occur, rather than Panarin walking away at the end of the year.

Dallas Stars Sign Ty Dellandrea To Entry-Level Contract

The Dallas Stars have signed their first round pick, inking Ty Dellandrea to a three-year entry-level contract. Dellandrea was sent back to the Flint Firebirds of the OHL just moments later, where he’ll be expected to take the next step in his development.

Selected 13th overall in June, Dellandrea was a bit of a surprise pick by the Stars. With other flashy prospects like Joel Farabee, Ty Smith, Rasmus Kupari and Joe Veleno still available, the Stars instead stayed true to their board and picked the well rounded forward from Flint who has yet to really blossom at the OHL level. That could easily happen this year though after an impressive performance in the rookie tournament and an exciting summer from all accounts. He’ll almost assuredly improve on the 59 points he recorded last season in 67 games, especially if the Firebirds can find even a modicum of success after years of turmoil in the front office and coaching staff.

Dallas may have to wait for their newest prospect to develop into an NHL player, but with the franchise expected to experience somewhat of a bounce back campaign and other young stars taking the spotlight off him, Dellandrea can quietly go about his business in the junior and minor leagues for the next year or two. He could be a key player at the World Juniors this winter, after suiting up for Canada at the Summer Showcase.

College Free Agent Michael Prapavessis Signs With AHL’s Cleveland Monsters

Former RPI Engineers defenseman Michael Prapavessis has found his next team. An unsigned Dallas Stars draft pick, Prapavessis became a free agent in August after completing his collegiate career. With training camps ongoing, he has finally reached an agreement with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters on a one-year contract, the team announced. Prapavessis, an Ontario native, is set to stay in the Great Lakes region, moving to Ohio after four years in Rochester, New York.

Prapavessis, 22, was always a candidate for an AHL contract, though given his lengthy free agency, the ECHL was beginning to look more likely. A four-year starter on the blue line for RPI, Prapavessis was a productive puck-mover, as well as a locker room leader, taking on the captaincy as a senior. Although RPI is not an elite NCAA program, he proved that he could play a major role at a high level – then looked competent in a short stint with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones – which is likely what an earned him a shot with the Monsters. Prapavessis may not be ready to play an immediate top-six role in Cleveland, but when called upon there is a degree of trust that the coaches of the Columbus Blue Jackets affiliate can have in his ability and intelligence.

With Prapavessis’ signing, the majority of the August college free agent market is now under contract. Prapavessis, Clarkson’s Terrance Amorosa, St. Cloud’s Judd Peterson, and Boston University’s John MacLeod have signed in the AHL, while New Hampshire’s Shane Eiserman, Minnesota-Duluth’s Avery Peterson, Minnesota’s Jack Glover, and Brown’s Tyler Bird have inked ECHL deals. Two very talented defensemen – Clarkson’s Kelly Summers and Minnesota’s Steven Johnson – as well as Western Michigan forward Aidan Muir, remain unsigned and it will be interesting to see how long the trio remain unemployed.

Poll: Who Will Win The Calder Trophy In 2018-19?

The Athletic’s NHL Draft and prospects guru Scott Wheeler has released the first definitive list of candidates for the Calder Trophy in 2018-19, and the order may surprise some people. Admittedly, the list is in the context of fantasy hockey, but Wheeler’s rankings are true to how he thinks Calder voting will unfold if each rookie hits their stat projections. As such, it’s not this year’s first overall pick, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, at the top of the list, but presumptive top-six center for the Vancouver Canucks, Elias Pettersson. Pettersson will be put in a much better position to rack up points than will Dahlin, the next-best candidate, as potentially one of the three best scoring forwards for the Canucks and traditionally productive forwards have a better shot at the Calder than (relatively) equally productive defensemen.

Coming in at number three is Boston Bruins forward Ryan Donato, who led both the NCAA and Olympics in goals last season and will look to win a top-six role for Boston and continue to find the back of the net at an alarming rate. Playing alongside either Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk is an easy way for Donato to quickly become an elite scorer at the NHL level. The fourth-ranked candidate is second overall pick Andrei Svechnikov of the Carolina Hurricanes, who – like Pettersson – will be given an immense amount of responsibility right away as a top-six winger who is arguably already one of the three most skilled forwards on the team. However, Svechnikov is one of three Hurricanes rookies on Wheeler’s list, which could take away from his case. Rounding out the top five is Dahlin’s fellow rookie in Buffalo, center Casey Mittelstadt, who scored at nearly a point-per-game pace in the college ranks and in a brief stint with the Sabres to end the year. Mittelstadt should face favorable match-ups this season with the lines anchored by Jack Eichel and Patrik Berglund drawing considerable attention from the opposition.

The St. Louis Blues got some good news today as goaltender Jake Allen, who has been out with back spasms and was expected to miss the first 10-14 days of training camp, said that he’s already feeling better and could return to the ice ahead of schedule, according to Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“It’s progressed way better than when it first happened,” he said. “It’s a lot better than I thought it was and I’m feeling really good right now. I’ve made some significant progress the last couple days. It looks like I’ll be on the ice earlier than that.”

The team needs a big season from the 28-year-old after a rough season last year. The veteran posted a career-low 2.75 GAA and a poor .906 save percentage as the Blues missed the playoffs. Allen changed his training routine this summer and was primed for a big year as the Blues redesigned their roster this offseason.

  • St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko has been a solid defenseman in St. Louis for years, but after agreeing to a five-year, $27.5MM contract a year ago, the team was hoping that he might have a breakout season last year. While that didn’t happen, Parayko might get that opportunity this year, according to Fox Sports’ Andy Strickland, who reports that Parayko has come to camp in great shape, finishing near the top in off-ice testing. If he’s in the best shape of his career, a big year could follow.
  • Scott Powers of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Henri Jokiharju has looked good early in training camp. The 2016 first-rounder played alongside veteran Duncan Keith and was both aggressive and helped create chances on offense. The team, desperately in need of defense, could get a huge boost if the 19-year-old proves that he’s indeed ready for the NHL. He scored 71 points in 63 games with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL last season.
  • Sean Shapiro of The Athletic writes that one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Stars’ addition of new head coach Jim Montgomery will likely be young defenseman Julius Honka. The 22-year-old has regained his confidence after losing last season and has already impressed his new head coach, who hopes the 2014 first-rounder might be ready to make a significant impact in the Stars’ defense.
  • BSN Denver’s AJ Haefele writes that Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said Saturday that he wants defenseman Samuel Girard to start this season with veteran Erik Johnson after the way Girard finished the season last year. The 20-year-old finished the season with four goals and 23 points between Nashville and Colorado and showed the ability to develop into a top-four defenseman. However, there is still a lot of time in camp before that decision becomes permanent.

Poll: Who Will Win The Central Division In 2018-19?

We’re less than a month away from the 2018-19 NHL season, and players are hitting the ice with teammates to start forming chemistry. All over the league training camps are getting underway, and rookies are starting to make their marks with their new franchises. The excitement for the upcoming season is starting to bubble up to the surface, and even the smallest NHL news has fans in a frenzy.

Recently, Bovada released their over/under numbers for each team’s point totals and there are some interesting results. Though these aren’t to be taken exactly as predictions for the upcoming season—since betting odds also take into account popularity trends and other factors—fans of the Tampa Bay Lightning should still be extremely satisfied to see their club at the very top with an over/under of 107.5 points. The Lightning are expected to be Stanley Cup contenders once again in 2018-19, and have brought back nearly their entire roster.

We ran a poll asking the PHR community to decide who will win the Atlantic Division, and the Lightning came out on top with nearly 37% of the vote. The Toronto Maple Leafs finished in second place, but the big surprise was the Detroit Red Wings in third with 15% of all voters. While our readers have more confidence in the Red Wings than the odds makers, we’ve seen stranger things in the past.

Next we asked the PHR community to vote on the Pacific Division, and while things were a little more evenly distributed the San Jose Sharks were still the clear favorite. With more than 26% of the vote, the Sharks came out ahead of the Los Angeles Kings (16%), Vegas Golden Knights (14%) and Calgary Flames (13%). The Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks haven’t done enough to inspire much confidence, earning just a handful of votes each. One has to wonder if the Sharks would have had an even bigger lead had the poll happened after their recent acquisition of Erik Karlsson.

Finally, we polled the PHR community on what they think will happen in the Metropolitan Division. This group has given us the last three Stanley Cup winners, but has star players throughout. Our readership obviously believes in a Cup hangover, as the Pittsburgh Penguins easily topped the defending champion Washington Capitals with nearly a 10% gap. Third place went to the Philadelphia Flyers who will hope adding another top forward and allowing their young players to take another step forward can push them to the top, while the Columbus Blue Jackets came in fourth despite their continued regular season success.

While the Atlantic had some contending options, the Central Division which we’ll tackle today have two powerhouses that are likely on a collision course in the playoffs once again. The Winnipeg Jets (106.5 over/under) and Nashville Predators (105.5) are two of the very best teams in the league and can ice a dangerous lineup from top to bottom. They are the easy favorites for the division crown, but the upstart Colorado Avalanche and revamped St. Louis Blues have their eyes on an underdog story. That’s not to mention the top-heavy Dallas Stars, consistent Minnesota Wild or playoff tested Chicago Blackhawks, who could all surprise with excellent seasons in 2018-19.

Minor Transactions: 9/13/18

The notable transactions around the NHL today have been anything but “minor”, as the start of training camp has led to some major moves of late. However, many decisions of a much smaller magnitude continue to be made by teams preparing for the preseason, as well as players still looking for a contract this season:

  • Much has been made of the Calgary Flames’ training camp roster, as the team has employed a number of high-profile tryout players as they send a portion of their squad to China to face off with the Boston Bruins. However, upon releasing their camp roster today, the Flames also revealed that two veteran defensemen have been signed to AHL contracts with their affiliate, the Stockton Heat. Although not previously announced, the Heat have inked Andrew O’Brien and Michael Paliotta to contracts. O’Brien, 25, is signing his first AHL contract, as the big stay-at-home defender has been under contract with an NHL in each of his five pro seasons. Following a three-year entry-level deal with the Anaheim Ducks, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013, O’Brien has bounced around from Anaheim, to the Nashville Predators, to the Dallas Stars over the past two seasons. In all three stops, O’Brien was not given a shot to play at the NHL level, making a minor league contract an unsurprising development. Paliotta, 25, was a teammate of O’Brien’s with the AHL’s Texas Stars last year, as the former third-round pick was unable to find a two-way contract last year after two pro seasons under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and New York Rangers. Unlike O’Brien, Paliotta does have a pair of NHL appearances to his credit. The roster also served as notice that defenseman Adam Ollas Mattsson has re-signed with the Heat. The former Flames draft pick was limited by injuries to just fourteen games in his first pro season and there was some question as to what was in store for his playing future. It seems that Ollas Mattson is content to stay in Stockton and prove he can play at the AHL level.
  • After being invited to Vancouver Canucks training camp, former Edmonton Oilers prospect Ben Betker has nevertheless signed with the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings. The team announced today that Betker and forward Wade Murphy has signed one-year contracts. It seems that Betker’s invite was likely a preemptive move to the defenseman signing with their “AA” affiliate. Fresh off his entry-level contract, the big rearguard still has plenty of work to do on his game before he can think about the NHL level. However, a strong camp experience in Vancouver could be a good start.
  • Several teams have already sent some of their rookie camp participants back to their junior clubs. The Montreal Canadiens have seen enough of many of their 2018 draft picks, as the team announced that they have returned forwards Cam Hillis, Allan McShane, Cole Fonstad, and Samuel Houde to their respective CHL teams. The Buffalo Sabres did the same with 2017 third-round defenseman Oskari Laaksonen, although he is set to return to his pro team, Ilves, of the Liiga in his native Finland. As did the Minnesota Wild with recent sixth-rounder Shawn Boudrias, who heads back to the QMJHL. These are just the beginning of the camp cuts which will dominate the news cycle of the next few weeks.

Tyler Seguin Signs Extension With Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars have signed superstar center Tyler Seguin to an eight-year contract extension that will carry an average annual value of $9.85MM. Seguin was headed into his final year under contract and scheduled for unrestricted free agency next summer, but will now remain with the Stars through the 2026-27 season. The contract is heavily front-loaded, and also contains a no-movement clause that will also cover the upcoming season. The full breakdown:

  • 2019-20: $13.5MM
  • 2020-21: $9.0MM
  • 2021-22: $13.0MM
  • 2022-23: $13.0MM
  • 2023-24: $8.45MM
  • 2024-25: $8.0MM
  • 2025-26: $7.1MM
  • 2026-27: $6.75MM

Seguin, 26, has established himself as one of the very best players in the league in recent seasons, and took that to a whole new level in 2017-18. Along with an improved defensive game, Seguin tallied a career high 40 goals and broke 70 points for the fifth consecutive season. While the Stars disappointed and didn’t make the playoffs, Seguin and linemate Jamie Benn were still devastating in all situations and are the core of a team that should rebound this season. This deal likely means that Seguin will play out the rest of his career in Dallas, but is still in his prime and should be a Hart Trophy candidate going forward.

The fact that the Stars got him locked up for under $10MM per season is a testament to how much Seguin truly wanted to stay in Dallas. Though he was clear in his disappointment earlier this summer, he never did waver from the fact that he would like to stay with the organization moving forward and was hoping something would get done. Easily compared to John Tavares who reached unrestricted free agency this year and has had a similar career path, Seguin likely could have made close to (or even more than) the $88MM contract handed out by the Toronto Maple Leafs just a few months ago.

Dallas now has more than $55MM committed to just 13 players for the 2019-20 season, but with Benn, Seguin, Alexander Radulov, John Klingberg and Ben Bishop locked up can feel happy with their core moving forward. Jason Spezza’s $7.5MM cap hit will come off the books in less than a year, giving them more flexibility moving forward to lock up their other young talents.

Though long-term deals always come with some risk, the Stars have done well to limit it in this contract. The salary cap will likely increase at least somewhat in the next few seasons, and by the time Seguin starts to experience a decline in performance the actual salary left on the deal will have started to decline appropriately. For now, they have locked up a top talent for considerably less than he would have received on the open market and set their franchise up for success.

This deal continues a trend of 2019 UFAs signing long-term extensions, and takes another one of the potential superstars off the market. Seguin, Max Pacioretty, Ryan Ellis, Ryan McDonagh, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Drew Doughty were all scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency next summer but have instead signed lengthy deals to stay with their (sometimes new) teams. Teams hoping to get their hands on the remaining players may have to pay up quickly or risk them being unavailable for years to come.
