Latest On Toronto’s Russian Recruitment

October 29, 2017 at 8:52 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs struck gold when they signed the then 24-year old Nikita Zaitsev out of the KHL. It took just one season before Zaitsev earned a seven-year extension with the Maple Leafs, a deal that will pay him an average of $4.5MM per season. Zaitsev has quickly become one of the most reliable defenders in Toronto, and will be a part of that team for some time.

Before signing Zaitsev, the Maple Leafs’ brass went to meIgor Ozhignaovet him in person in Russia and recruit him into their program. Earlier this summer they completed a similar trip to see Igor Ozhiganov, another 25-year old defender that could sign as soon as next summer. Now, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet again mentions the team’s connection to the pending free agent. On Hockey Night in Canada last night:

He’s going to be recruited by some NHL teams, but the word out of Russia is that he is most likely going to Toronto next year.

Toronto has some of the most exciting young offensive players in the league, but have continued to struggle defensively at times. Though they’re 7-4 through the first few weeks of the season, they’ve also allowed 40 goals during those 11 games. While Zaitsev worked out quite well for them, there is no telling what Ozhiganov could become. The 6’2″ 207-lbs defenseman certainly has the talent to come to the NHL, and Zaitsev would have some inside info for his new team—the two played together for both CSKA Moscow and Sibir Novosibirsk during their KHL careers.

Snapshots: Vanek, Gostisbehere, Palmieri

October 28, 2017 at 8:54 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Thomas Vanek has been used to playing big minutes his entire career. He was used to playing between 16-18 minutes. Then he came to the Vancouver Canucks, where suddenly his minutes have dropped dramatically in head coach Travis Green’s rewards-based system. Now he’s averaging 13:33 worth of time with some days getting quite a bit more and others, quite a bit less, but Vanek just finds himself working harder to make sure he gets his minutes, according to Ben Kuzma of The Province.

The scribe writes that Green’s system in which he rewards players who are playing well and penalizes them when they make mistakes is working in Vancouver as Green’s style is being compared to that of legendary New York Islanders’ coach Al Arbour. And it’s that style of coaching that has Green’s Canucks boasting a 6-3-1 start.

As for Vanek, his numbers have fluctuated a lot, which has a lot to do with his success or lack thereof. Kuzma wrote that Vanek has always been that player where you get a mixed bag from and that shows. The 33-year-old wing, however, did score his fourth goal of the season for Vancouver Thursday in their 6-2 win over the Washington Capitals, but still only got 11:48 of ice time.

“The best coaches I’ve had, it goes two ways,” Vanek said. “You need the trust from him and he needs the trust from you. The biggest thing is honesty. Greener has done a real good job of that and we’re winning, so the message is sent well. But talk to any player. You want to be around that 15- or 16-minute mark. Right now, that’s not happening so you just try to make the most of what you get.”

  • Philadelphia Flyers’ general manager Ron Hextall announced that defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is out for the game with an upper-body injury after sustaining a big hit against the boards from Toronto’s Leo Komarov in the second period. While the hit received no attention from the referees, the general belief is that it will be reviewed by the NHL tomorrow. If Gostisbehere can’t play on Monday, Philly.com’s Sam Carchidi tweets that Samuel Morin will likely be brought in to help the team.
  • Andrew Gross of The Record tweets that New Jersey Devils winger Kyle Palmieri is day-to-day with an injured left foot. He will be re-evaluated on Monday. The 26-year-old hasn’t skated since Oct. 22 and may not be able to go on the team’s upcoming road trip. However, Gross tweets that the team will not necessarily call anyone up, because Brian Boyle might be ready soon.

NHL Notes: Didomenico, Okposo, Neal

October 28, 2017 at 7:55 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

While Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion has been working the trade lines hard in order to acquire a scoring forward, but the team may have found that forward in their own ranks in Chris Didomenico, writes Don Brennan of The Ottawa Sun. Of course, the scribe writes that its too early to tell whether he would make for a good permanent fill-in with the Senators, but the journeyman showed the team something in Friday night’s shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The 28-year-old forward had a goal and an assist in the loss, but Didomenico came close to changing that outcome. His goal in the final minute of regulation tied the game, helping the Senators get a point in the standings. He was even given the chance to take the first shot in the shootout Friday, although he was stopped by New Jersey’s Keith Kinkaid.

Brennan writes that once Didomenico was a highly-touted prospect whose size and injury history forced him to play overseas for much of his career, but he is playing for a chance to earn a permanent spot in the team’s rotation. He has played with Mike Hoffman on several occasions in his career and has been teamed with him once again. He had three goals and two assists in four games with the Belleville Senators in the AHL before being called up and now has a goal and two assists in four games with Ottawa.

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News writes that the team could find itself in hot water if Kyle Okposo doesn’t start showing up. The scribe writes that if Okposo isn’t affected by any lingering concussion affects or having any medication reactions like he did last year, then he needs to take his game up a notch. The 28-year-old signed a seven-year, $42MM contract a year ago and has just two assists in 10 games. If he doesn’t find his offense soon, the team will be stuck with a middling forward, who the team gave the highest-ever free agent contract to and they will be stuck with him for another five years. Toss in the fact that he is untradeable, while Evander Kane is likely to be traded and the situation for the team looks even worse.
  • Vegas Golden Knights winger James Neal lost some teeth during the team’s 7-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Friday, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal’s David Schoen. While there is no word on how many teeth the team’s top scorer lost when he took a high-stick from Colorado’s Patrik Nemeth in the first period, it didn’t stop the 30-year-old. He came back to score his seventh goal of the season in the second period and still dove to block a shot in the third period to help preserve the shutout. Neal is not expected to miss any time with the injury.

Western Notes: Vlasic, Shipachyov, Kossila, Oleksy

October 28, 2017 at 6:30 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The San Jose Sharks seem to have faired well on a five-game East Coast road trip and the team is 5-5. The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz (subscription required) released his 10 Sharks observations, and is quick to lodge his complaint on the team’s usage of veteran defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who he believes should not be used on the power play any more.

While Kurz writes that he isn’t taking away from Vlasic’s defensive game as he is fantastic at covering other team’s top players, he points out that he is the wrong guy for the power play and has been for some time. Since the start of the 2015-16 season, Vlasic has played 169:25 minutes of ice time on the power play for San Jose, sixth-most on the team. He has one goal and seven assists in those two-plus years on the power play and just a lone assist this year in 25 minutes of power play time.

The team needs to look for a younger defenseman to take over that role on San Jose’s second power play unit and Kurz pointed to rookie Joakim Ryan as a possible candidate. While the 24-year-old has been pointless so far this season, Ryan led the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda in shots on goal last season with 185. His 10 goals and 39 assists last year, suggest he might be able to handle that role.

  • The Vadim Shipachyov saga isn’t over yet. Expected to skate tonight with the AHL Chicago Wolves after being assigned there Wednesday by the Vegas Golden Knights, the 30-year-old playmaker is not in tonight’s lineup for the Wolves in their game against the Milwaukee Admirals, according to Jesse Granger of The Las Vegas Sun. Chicago has not specified why he isn’t in the lineup. However, according to Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, Shipachyov will not play and is returning to Las Vegas to be with his family. He did practice with Chicago yesterday, which is why he was expected to play today. The KHL veteran had been assigned at the start of the year to Chicago, but didn’t report and Vegas allowed him to stay in Vegas. However, there is no indication the team had planned to allow him the same courtesy this time around.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced they have reassigned center Kalle Kossila and defenseman Steven Oleksy to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. Two moves had to be made after the team activated both Sami Vatanen and Ryan Miller for tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kossila, played in two games for Anaheim this week, putting up a goal and an assist. The 24-year-old had two goals and four assists in five AHL games. Oleksy was called up Thursday, but did not play. The 31-year-old blueliner has two goals and two assists in five games for the Gulls.

Eastern Notes: Smith-Pelly, Andersen, Fedun

October 28, 2017 at 5:26 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

A few days ago, Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz hinted that bottom-six winger Devante Smith-Pelly might be nearing a promotion to a better line. Well, NBC Sports’ Tarik El-Bashir writes that tonight will be that promotion as the 25-year-old has been moved onto the team’s top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov in their game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Smith-Pelly, who came to Washington this offseason, has had a very inconsistent career, starting when he was a highly-touted prospect and was drafted in the second round in 2010 by the Anaheim Ducks. Despite his junior success and his success at the AHL level, the winger had trouble figuring things out at the NHL level and quickly found himself bouncing around different teams. He signed a one-year, $650K deal with Washington this offseason after a one-year stint in New Jersey a year ago in which he tallied just nine points in 53 games.

Now, with the Capitals, he has started to show some of his skills and has earned the trust of Trotz. While he’s yet to score a goal, the belief is that his talents might be a perfect fit alongside Ovechkin and Kuznetsov. Smith-Pelly will replace Jakub Vrana, who moves to the team’s second line next to T.J. Oshie and Niklas Backstrom, who is returning after missing a game due to illness.

“He deserves it. He’s put in the work. His game is such that he needs to move up in the lineup,” Trotz said on Smith-Pelly’s promotion.

  • James Mirtle of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that Toronto Maple Leafs’ goaltender Frederik Andersen has struggled shockingly badly in the month of October. He has a 3.54 GAA and a .893 save percentage in nine games so far this year. While he has always been a streaky goaltender, Mirtle writes that what Andersen has been struggling with is saving the low-danger shots on goal. In fact, he has the worst save percentage against low-danger shots at .935 (six goals against 92 shots). The odd thing is that he is actually playing well against high-danger shots, as he’s ranked 12th in the league, although he is facing more of those shots than anyone in the league other than Pittsburgh’s Matt Murray. However, these trends suggest that he might bounce back quickly if the team can start playing better defense.
  • The Buffalo Sabres announced today after their 3-2 home loss to the San Jose Sharks that the team has re-assigned defenseman Taylor Fedun to the Rochester Americans of the AHL. The 28-year-old defenseman has been filling in as an emergency defenseman and was a healthy scratch for the Sabres today. He has split time between Buffalo and Rochester all season, having played three games for Rochester and two for Buffalo. He might play in the Americans game tonight as Buffalo doesn’t play again until Thursday.

Injury Updates: Zajac, Connolly, Miller, Vatanen, Teravainen

October 28, 2017 at 3:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While he is still a long way from returning to the lineup, Devils center Travis Zajac took a step forward in his recovery on Friday in the morning skate for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle back in mid-August.  However, head coach John Hynes was quick to caution to Andrew Gross of The Record that he still has a long way to go and that there’s no updated timeframe yet for his return.  At the time of the surgery, Zajac was expected to miss four-to-six months but if he doesn’t experience any setbacks as he begins to skate, he could potentially push to be back for the shorter end of that timeline.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • The Capitals will likely be without winger Brett Connolly for at least the next two games as he has been placed into concussion protocol, notes Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post. Anthony Peluso, who was recalled yesterday, is likely to take his spot on the roster while Tyler Graovac (upper-body injury) was transferred to injured reserve.
  • The Ducks have activated goaltender Ryan Miller off IR, reports Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register. The netminder is expected to serve as the backup tonight and then potentially make his first start of the season on Sunday.  Miller is in his first season with Anaheim after signing a two-year deal with them in free agency but suffered a wrist injury in the preseason and has yet to suit up in a regular season game in 2017-18.
  • Also coming off the IR in Anaheim is blueliner Sami Vatanen, Stephens notes in the same column. He has missed the entire season so far after undergoing surgery in May to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.  His return to the Ducks’ lineup comes at a great time with Cam Fowler (knee) and Kevin Bieksa (hand) both dealing with injuries.
  • After leaving Friday’s game with an upper-body injury, Hurricanes winger Teuvo Teravainen will skate Sunday morning and is listed as a game-time decision for their game against Anaheim, the team announced (via Twitter). Teravainen is off to a nice start in his second season with Carolina, recording five points in the first nine games of the season which ranks him tied for third on the team.

PHR Mailbag: Vegas, Capitals, Kings

October 28, 2017 at 2:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The hot start of the Vegas Golden Knights has been one of the hot topics around the league and accordingly, dominated the questions posed for this edition of the PHR Mailbag.

@J_B_Maguire: Hard to believe we are talking about @GoldenKnights having a crisis! Does their glut on D give them some trading chips for a G?

Although it’s understandable why Vegas opted to deal Calvin Pickard (to Toronto for winger Tobias Lindberg and a sixth rounder), it has left them with quite a hole with Marc-Andre Fleury and Malcolm Subban both out of the lineup.  Their spare blueliners are certainly trading chips but I’m not sure GM George McPhee would want to trade one for a player that will amount to a stopgap solution for a few weeks.  Unless they can get a waiver-exempt netminder who can go back down when their top-two return, I suspect they’d prefer draft picks or prospects for their surplus defenders instead.

That said, the Golden Knights should have some options out there if they want to give themselves another option with some NHL experience under their belts.  Andrew Hammond is clearly the odd man out in Ottawa but has had a bit of NHL success in the past and is off to a decent start with AHL Belleville.  I suspect he wouldn’t mind a change of scenery if it got him an NHL look for a few weeks and the Senators, a strict budget team, would certainly like to get out of the contract.  The asking price there should be rather low and could be as simple as simply agreeing to take him off their hands via a waiver claim.

Failing that, the next targets should be other teams that have a spare veteran that they may be willing to swap for their current interim backup in Maxime Lagace to free up playing time for a youngster or save a bit of money.  Winnipeg (Michael Hutchinson), and Los Angeles (Jeff Zatkoff) come to mind as teams that might be interested in doing something like that.

None of these players are particularly exciting options but they’d represent a short-term upgrade while keeping their extra defensemen intact.  However, they probably don’t need to really aim for someone more prominent to fill in for only a few weeks, especially with how well Oscar Dansk has played so far.

Connorsoxfan: After seeing McPhee’s roster shenanigans with Shipachyov, are agents going to be wary of dealing with him in the future?

Oct 17, 2017; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Vegas Golden Knights center Vadim Shipachyov (87) skates with the puck during a game against the Buffalo Sabres at T-Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY SportsVadim Shipachyov’s case is a very rare situation where he signed a pricey contract outside the entry-level system while still having waiver exemption.  In terms of agents dealing with McPhee, it’s going to primarily be via free agency where whoever signs won’t be waiver-exempt when it happens.  In other words, the current situation won’t be able to repeat itself so I can’t see it really being a factor.  It could hurt a bit in terms of their international recruiting but a lot of the time, those players aren’t signing big-money deals right away and are often expected to start in the minors so what has happened here shouldn’t hurt them too much in the grand scheme of things.

It’s worth noting that despite everything that has happened, the Golden Knights have been pretty good to Shipachyov through this.  They could have forced him to report to the minors at the beginning of the season when he was first sent down but they didn’t, allowing him to collect his full pay in the process (which, without escrow coming into play,  actually resulted in him getting more money).  They’ve also allowed his agent to try to find a more immediate NHL opportunity for him which they’re not required to do.  While agents (and players) around the league have certainly taken notice of the situation, they’ll also be noting these factors as well which paint McPhee in a better light.

vegasloveforthebills: When will VGK finally pull off a deal(s). Or is the rumor true, no GM really wants to deal with McPhee because they are still upset on how he handled the expansion draft process?

After McPhee really took control of the transaction landscape league-wide heading into the expansion draft (with having teams take his ‘pledge’ in particular), I wouldn’t be surprised if some of his counterparts were a bit annoyed.  I wouldn’t think that’s to the point where some just simply wouldn’t deal with him, however.

It’s not as if other teams haven’t shied away from making trades with them.  Aside from the pre-arranged expansion deals, they’ve already made four other trades (Alexei Emelin to Nashville, Marcus Kruger to Carolina, Marc Methot to Dallas, and Pickard to Toronto) which account for a big chunk of the deals made since July 1st.

The holdup in getting more trades done is simply that their depth defensemen (Jason Garrison, Jon Merrill, Griffin Reinhart, and Brad Hunt) just don’t really move the needle for other teams.  Why trade for a fringe defender when odds are the other team already has someone like that in their system?  Finding someone who doesn’t is a pretty limited market to work within.

As the season progresses, many expect that the Golden Knights will eventually start to drop in the standings.  If and when that happens, their more prominent rental players will start to be made available and that’s when trade talks should really start to heat up.  With them winning as often as they have early on though, that may still be a couple of months away.

Let’s look at a couple of other teams now:

@MichaelJBenelli: Who can the Caps trade for a d-man?

With Washington’s salary cap situation, they’re in a spot where they basically have to match salary in any trade they make.  Matt Niskanen is on LTIR for now but adding a pricier option now would only create more problems when he’s set to return.

Clearly, they’re not going to move any of their big-name forwards for help on the back end so it’s their secondary guys that become possible trade pieces.  Tom Wilson has yet to really advance beyond being a bottom-six forward in five years and has arbitration rights after the season.  In theory, they could have a cheaper physical player take his spot which could free up a bit of money to add defensive help.  Lars Eller at $3.5MM is the most expensive of their secondary group but he also plays a pretty important role.  If they want to add a top-four defender now though (which will carry a higher salary), Eller would have to be the one going the other way to match money.

Then there’s Brett Connolly, who might be the most viable candidate.  He has shown flashes of being a strong player but also has been in the doghouse the last couple of years.  With a $1.5MM cap hit, he’s someone that potentially could be flipped for an upgrade on the third defense pairing that makes around the same amount of money.  That’s not too thrilling of a scenario but it might be all they can afford right now.

As we get closer to the trade deadline, teams will have a better sense of what type of cap room they have to play with and if they can retain salary in a deal.  That will be the best time for Washington to try to bring in someone that can have more of an impact (while not necessarily having to match money going out which frees up more options) but unfortunately for them, that’s still a few months away from happening.

@dodgerskingsfan: Can the Kings keep their scoring going?? #PHRMailbag

The Kings sit fourth in the league in goals scored this season (3.6 per game) which is one of the bigger surprises of the year so far after being 25th (2.45 per contest) last year.  Head coach John Stevens has pushed all of the right buttons so far while adding former NHL star Pierre Turgeon as an offensive assistant certainly has paid off in the early going.  (In a copycat league, how many more teams will be doing something like this over next couple of years?)  However, we’re still only nine games in and I think some players are overachieving at the moment.

Dustin Brown has really come to life but after being a secondary player for the last several years, I have questions about whether or not he can maintain the pace he’s on, both in terms of production and ice time.  Adrian Kempe is scoring like a top-six forward right now but as a player who has been a bottom-six piece on his previous teams, he’s probably going to revert to that at some point.  Not having Jeff Carter for a while (he’s out month-to-month) will start to hurt them as well.

That said, this isn’t to say that we should be expecting huge regression from them by any stretch.  I don’t think they’re going to be an elite-scoring team all season long but with how they’re playing plus Jonathan Quick being at the top of his game, they look like they’re going to be a team to contend with in the Pacific Division.

West Notes: Sikura, Garrison, Husso, Jagr

October 28, 2017 at 1:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Blackhawks are expected to offer prospect winger Dylan Sikura a spot in their lineup as soon as his college season ends, reports Scott Powers of The Athletic (subscription required).  Sikura, who was recently named to Canada’s entry at the upcoming Karjala Cup, a tournament that they’re using as an evaluation for the Olympics in February.  He currently sits second in NCAA scoring with six goals and eight assists through six games.

Chicago is no stranger to offering the chance to play right away and burn the first year of an entry-level deal; they most recently went that route last year with John Hayden.  This is the one real bargaining chip that they have to play as if Sikura (a sixth-round pick of the Blackhawks in 2014) were to wait until August 15th and then become an unrestricted free agent, he’d have no shortage of interest around the league.

Elsewhere in the West:

  • Golden Knights defenseman Jason Garrison has cleared waivers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link). That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise with his $4.6MM cap hit.  It will be interesting to see if there is any trade interest in him where Vegas could retain part of his contract to facilitate a move or take a notable contract back in return.  It’s worth noting that the first-year team has already used one of its three retention slots from their trade of Alexei Emelin back in July.  In the meantime, they have assigned him to Chicago of the AHL, per the AHL’s Transactions page.
  • The Blues announced that they’ve recalled goaltender Ville Husso from San Antonio of the AHL. The move isn’t as a result of injury but rather a contingency plan if backup Carter Hutton is unavailable for tonight’s game against Columbus with his wife expecting to give birth shortly.  Husso, a fourth-rounder of St. Louis back in 2014, has yet to play in the NHL but is off to a good start in the minors this season with a .927 save percentage in his first three starts.
  • Flames winger Jaromir Jagr is expected to be activated off injured reserve on Sunday, reports Postmedia’s Eric Francis. The 45-year-old suffered a lower-body injury last weekend and if he is activated for tomorrow, he will wind up only missing the minimum one week.  It’s likely that center Mark Jankowski, their lone waiver-exempt forward that is also AHL eligible, will be sent back down to open up a roster spot for Jagr.

Coyotes Acquire Scott Wedgewood

October 28, 2017 at 12:52 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Coyotes have brought in some goaltending depth, acquiring Scott Wedgewood from the Devils in exchange for Calgary’s fifth-round pick in 2018.

Arizona has had all sorts of problems between the pipes this season with Antti Raanta missing of the year thus far due to injury while backup Louis Domingue has struggled considerably in an expanded role.  Adin Hill has had some good and bad moments in his first NHL stint but he isn’t the solution either.  The duo rank 46th and 43rd respectively in save percentage among 50 qualifying goaltenders league-wide.  Following the trade, the Coyotes announced that they’ve returned Hill to AHL Tucson.

Mar 25, 2016; Newark, NJ, USA; New Jersey Devils goalie Scott Wedgewood (31) watches the puck sail over his head during the third period at Prudential Center. The Capitals defeated the Devils 1-0 in overtime. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY SportsWedgewood missed most of 2016-17 due to labrum surgery but has been one of the more reliable goaltenders at the AHL level over the past few seasons.  However, with MacKenzie Blackwood, New Jersey’s top goaltending prospect, needing as much ice time as possible, playing time has been hard to come by for Wedgewood this year as he has made just one appearance at the minor league level.  Taking his place on the roster for New Jersey is Cory Schneider, who has been activated off injured reserve.

The 25-year-old could battle Domingue for the backup role behind Raanta when he’s ready to return to the lineup (which is expected to happen in the near future) or serve as an upgrade in the minors.  Having cleared waivers back in training camp, he still has some exemption time remaining.  If Wedgewood does go to the minors, it will be interesting to see if Marek Langhamer, currently in Tuscon, exercizes an opt-out in his contract next month (per Arizona Sports’ Craig Morgan) that would see him go to the Czech Extraliga (Arizona would still retain his rights).

Wedgewood is making the league minimum of $650K at the NHL level and just $110K in the minors making this a wise pickup for Arizona.  However, although he is too young to become a standard unrestricted free agent, he’ll still likely hit the open market in July as a Group VI free agent unless he gets in 24 NHL games (playing at least 30 minutes in each) this season.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (Twitter link) was first to report the two sides were closing in on a deal while Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro was first with the details.
