Garnet Hathaway Signs With Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals have signed another depth forward to a multi-year deal, inking Garnet Hathaway to a four-year $6MM deal according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

It took quite a while for Hathaway to become an NHL regular after four years at Brown University. They 27-year-old finally become an NHL regular in the 2017-18 season, but took his game to another level this season, posting a career-high 11 goals and 19 points, while providing the necessary grit and grind while playing on Calgary’s fourth line. He also finished with a career-high 200 hits last season.

It’s that energy and physicality that prompted the Capitals to add the forward to their team. Washington had already agreed to a deal with Richard Panik to fill the third-line role that was vacated when they traded winger Andre Burakovsky to Colorado a couple of days ago. Now Hathaway should fill a need on their fourth line as he likely will supplant either Travis Boyd or Chandler Stephenson there. The bump up in pay shouldn’t hurt either as he made just $850K last season with the Flames.

Eastern Notes: Francis, Payne, Johansson, Reimer, Lehner, Mastrosimone

One name that hasn’t gotten quite a bit of attention the last year has been that of former Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis. The former GM has spent the last few months on a management team that put together the roster for Canada at the recent World Championships. Sportsnet’s John Shannon points out that today is the last day that he is under contract with Carolina and could be free to sign with an other NHL team. According to Shannon, His work with Hockey Canada has increased his desire to return to the NHL.

Fox Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland adds that Francis name has come up for a while as a strong candidate for the general manager position in Seattle. Francis help build the Hurricanes roster that eventually eliminated the former Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals last year and reached the conference finals.

  • Ottawa Senators new head coach D.J. Smith will add another key assistant to his staff. After bringing in Jack Capuano to be his associate head coach, the Senators announced today that they have also added former St. Louis Blues head coach Davis Payne as an assistant coach for the 2019-20 season. The 48-year-old Payne spent the past two years in Ottawa’s division as the associate coach for the Buffalo Sabres and Phil Housley. Before that he spent five years as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings and helped lead the team to the 2014 Stanley Cup Championship. As head coach in St. Louis, he spent parts of three seasons there between 2009 and 2011, finishing with a 67-55-15 record.
  • TSN’s Darren Dreger writes that unrestricted free agent forward Marcus Johansson is talking to a number of teams today, but he is no longer talking to the Boston Bruins. The 28-year-old was acquired by Boston at the trade deadline for their playoff run, but reports indicate that his price tag is more than Boston wants to pay. Dreger adds that Boston is totally out of the picture now.
  • News & Observer’s Luke DeCock reports that while the Carolina Hurricanes acquired goaltender James Reimer earlier today, his stay in Carolina could be short. The scribe writes that Carolina isn’t necessarily planning on keeping the goaltender as the team continues to look to make more deals ahead of the opening of free agency on Monday. If they can find a taker, the team may try to flip him to another team.
  • The Athletic’s Arthur Staple adds that the Reimer trade suggests that the Florida Panthers are the leading candidates to sign Sergei Bobrovsky, which means the Islanders could find themselves without a top goalie. He points out there is plenty of time to re-connect with Robin Lehner. The two sides weren’t close in negotiations, but the Islanders may have no choice to change their stance in discussions.
  • The Detroit Red Wings got some bad news Saturday when they learned that recent draft prospect Robert Mastrosimone, the team’s second-round pick this year, suffered broken right ankle during development camp last week, according to the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James. The injury will require four to six weeks of rehab. Mastrosimone scored 31 goals for the USHL Chicago Steel last season.

While speculation has center Matt Duchene likely signing a long-term deal with the Nashville Predators, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman writes that the Montreal Canadiens aren’t out of the running yet. While Nashville may still be the favorite to land the star center, Friedman writes that one of his sources says that it’s not locked in and Montreal still is in the race.

Duchene, who grew up a fan of the Canadiens, would be a big addition for the Canadiens if they can land him. Duchene would likely become their top center in hopes of vaulting Montreal back into a playoff spot.

  • TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that while things are still in the works, he believes that the Colorado Avalanche and an unidentified team are the finalists to sign unrestricted free agent forward Joonas Donskoi. The 27-year-old scored 14 goals and 37 points last season and could provide the team with a solid middle-six option for the Avalanche. While LeBrun notes that he doesn’t know who the other team is, he believes that Buffalo and Edmonton are not in the running anymore.
  • The Washington Capitals managed to trade off one of their key restricted free agents in Andre Burakovsky Friday in hopes of saving some cap room, but even being free of that contract, the money is tight in Washington. In fact, Washington general manager Brian MacLellan said that because the NHL salary cap was lower than expected ($81.5MM), the team will likely be forced to sign restricted free agent Jakub Vrana to a short-term deal, according to NHL.com’s Tom Gulliti. Washington had initially planned to lock up Vrana to a long-term deal when the team had expected the cap to be set at $83MM, but with the number being lower than expected, the MacLellan doesn’t believe the team has the money to sign him long-term.
  • Vegas Golden Knights President of Hockey Operations George McPhee confirmed that the team is close to signing veteran unrestricted free agent defenseman Deryk Engelland, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal’s David Schoen. The 37-year-old had a down season last year, but the veteran who actually played in Vegas in the ECHL before the Golden Knights came about, has been a community leader there. He is likely expected to take a bottom-six role next season and could find himself more in a 6th/7th role on defense.
  • TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the Montreal Canadiens are among three teams that are interested in signing veteran goaltender Curtis McElhinney. The 36-year-old had a great season in Carolina after the Hurricanes claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the beginning of the year. He finished the season with a 2.58 GAA and a .912 save percentage in 33 appearances. LeBrun also adds that it doesn’t look like Toronto is one of the other two teams.
  • Former NHL player Patrik Berglund, who walked out on the Buffalo Sabres in the middle of last season, is exploring a return the the NHL and has several teams interested, according to Fox Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland. Berglund, who was packaged to Buffalo in the Ryan O’Reilly trade last offseason, didn’t like it in Buffalo and finally requested that his contract to be terminated after playing just 23 games in a reduced role. The 31-year-old scored 17 goals in the 2017-18 season, but scored just twice before walking away this year.

Brett Connolly Unlikely To Re-Sign; Capitals Plan To Replace Burakovsky In Free Agency

  • While Washington created a little bit more salary cap flexibility with yesterday’s trade of Andre Burakovsky to Colorado, don’t expect them to re-sign winger Brett Connolly. Capitals GM Brian MacLellan told Tom Gulitti of NHL.com (Twitter link) that he expects Connolly’s price to be too high for them to be able to afford to re-sign him.  Connolly enters the open market coming off of a career year that saw him score 46 points, 44 of which came at even strength.  MacLellan indicated that they plan to try to fill Burakovsky’s roster spot through a UFA signing.

Capitals Re-Sign Michael Sgarbossa

The Capitals will be keeping their top AHL scorer in the fold for a couple more years.  The team announced that they’ve re-signed center Michael Sgarbossa to a two-year, two-way contract.  The deal will pay him the league minimum $700K in the NHL and just over $400K per season in the minors.

Sgarbossa was slated to enter Group Six unrestricted free agency for the third straight year but instead, he’ll stick around with an organization that he had some success with last season.  He posted a career-best 65 points with Hershey last season, cracking the top ten in AHL scoring for the first time in the process.  That was enough to earn him a multi-year pact, something he hasn’t had since his entry-level deal.

The 26-year-old last saw NHL action back in 2016-17 with the Panthers and has a total of ten points in 48 career contests between Colorado, Anaheim, and Florida.  He will get a look in training camp with the Capitals as they’re expected to shuffle around their depth forwards for next season but it’s more likely that he reprises his role with the Bears and hopes to earn a recall to the big club when injuries arise.

Colorado Avalanche Acquire Andre Burakovsky

The Colorado Avalanche have added some more skill and youth to their team, acquiring Andre Burakovsky from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick, a 2020 third-round pick (previously acquired from Arizona in the Carl Soderberg deal) and minor league forward Scott Kosmachuk. Burakovsky is set to become a restricted free agent, and Kosmachuk is actually set to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent in a few days.

Burakovsky could potentially accept his $3.25MM qualifying offer as well, given that his development hasn’t quite gone the way the Capitals hoped the last few seasons. In fact, the 24-year old forward has now posted two 25-point years in a row, a far cry from the 17-goal 38-point sophomore season that looked like his coming out party. Armed with plenty of speed and skill, Burakovsky was the 23rd-overall pick in the 2013 draft and quickly made his way to the NHL.

In Colorado, he will likely receive a bigger offensive role on the left wing where the Avalanche needed some more depth. A change of scenery may be the key to unlocking his full potential, something the Avalanche will hope for after giving up a not-insignificant package for him. Those two draft picks plus the potential $3.25MM salary is a fair amount of assets for a 25-point player, so he will have pressure on him to perform with his new team.

For Washington, trading Burakovsky was basically inevitable after extending the qualifying offer. The team didn’t have enough cap space to afford him this season and he just wasn’t providing the necessary offense for their championship goals. With a new contract due for Jakub Vrana and potential extensions on the horizon with Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby, moving Burakovsky was an obvious choice. Getting two relatively high draft picks out of the move is a win, though GM Brian MacLellan had tried to secure another young player during the most recent season and wasn’t able to.

At the very least, Washington now has some more ammunition for a potential trade deadline acquisition. Depending on where Vrana falls they could also potentially circle back to 20-goal forward Brett Connolly, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Monday and was previously too expensive for the team to retain.

Brooks Orpik Announces Retirement

The Washington Capitals won’t be bringing Brooks Orpik back for another season. The veteran defenseman announced his retirement from professional hockey today, indicating that his body just couldn’t handle the grind of another NHL season.

I’ve been extremely lucky to have the best job in the world for many years, but my body is telling me it is time to move on to something new. I’m excited for more family time and to experience a lot of the things that being a professional athlete forces you to miss out on. Thank you to the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins for giving me the opportunity to play against the best athletes in the world. I’ll be forever grateful for the memories and relationships that hockey has given me.

Orpik, 38, was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins 18th overall in a very different era of the NHL. The 6’3″ 217-lbs defenseman had registered just 10 points in 38 games that season for Boston College, but was a feared physical presence at even that young age. Not drafted for his offensive ability, Orpik nevertheless put up a pair of solid seasons at both ends of the rink for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to start his career before jumping onto the Pittsburgh roster and not looking back. In parts of 11 seasons with the Penguins, Orpik played 703 regular season games and registered 2,187 hits. Every opponent knew when he was on the ice, but sometimes couldn’t do anything to avoid getting run over.

In 2009, Orpik would win his first Stanley Cup with the Penguins, logging more than 20 minutes a night and registering 112 hits in just 24 games. An Olympic silver medal followed the year after, and a second NHL title years later with the Washington Capitals. “Batya” as the Capitals teammates called him, was an integral piece of their locker room and still a playoff warrior on the ice.

Orpik will finish his career with 1,035 regular season games, 194 points and 3,148 hits.

NHL Sets Salary Cap at $81.5MM for 2019-20

The NHL and NHLPA have made it official, as TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the NHL salary cap for 2019-20 will be $81.5MM, as many had recently projected with the salary floor being set at $60.2MM.

That isn’t good news for teams that are at or near the cap as many teams had hoped that the cap might be closer to $83MM like it was projected several weeks ago. However, recently rumors had been rumbling that the number would be closer to $82MM and potentially as low as $81.5MM, which is what it ended up being, which is a worst-case scenario for teams hoping for that extra space to maneuver.

That could prompt more teams that need to open up cap space to make cost-cutting moves. The league has seen some of that already today with the Nashville Predators unloading the $9MM contract of defenseman P.K. Subban in order to free up space to extend defenseman Roman Josi and potentially sign a free-agent center such as Matt Duchene in the coming week. The Toronto Maple Leafs sent a future first-rounder to Carolina also today in order to unload the final year of Patrick Marleau and his $6.25MM contract. The Tampa Bay Lightning also unloaded J.T. Miller’s $5.25MM contract that still has four more years on it for a future first-rounder as well. Other teams that are in trouble and could be making similar cap-saving moves include the Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

The announcement, however, could be big news for teams with plenty of cap space to sell. The Devils acquired a top-four defenseman for a very little return, while Vancouver added a top-six forward in Miller. There are six teams underneath the ceiling of $60.2MM, including the Philadelphia Flyers, Winnipeg Jets, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets, Ottawa Senators and the Colorado Avalanche. Several of those team have significant free agents to sign, however, including Winnipeg, Philadelphia and Colorado, but there are many teams that could take advantage, now more than ever, of some of the teams who have already capped themselves out. In fact, Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen was thrilled at the cap number.

“It doesn’t affect us. I like it,” Kekalainen said (via NHL.com’s Dan Rosen). “It’s going to squeeze some teams some more. … They’re going to have to solve their problems and maybe we can be a solution.”

Capitals Notes: Burakovsky, Draft, Kempny, Oshie

The Capitals are listening to offers on winger Andre Burakovsky, reports Brian McNally of NBC Sports Washington.  His case is one of the more intriguing ones heading into Monday’s qualifying offer deadline.  While the 24-year-old has shown flashes of top-six potential, he spent a good chunk of 2018-19 mired on the fourth line.  He has to be qualified at his salary from this past season, $3.25MM and Washington’s cap space is quite limited.  There’s no doubt that there will be teams with interest but can they be persuaded that it’s worth giving him that money or would they be better off trying to get him in free agency instead?  That will limit his trade market over these next few days.

More news around the Capitals:

  • GM Brian MacLellan told reporters, including Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post, that they’re likely to draft a forward with the 25th pick tomorrow night. Washington has drafted several defenders in recent years and have a decent group of prospects on the back end but it has come at the expense of their forward group.  MacLellan indicated that unless a defenseman on the board is rated significantly higher than the next forward on their list, they’d lean towards picking the forward.
  • While there was some question about whether or not defenseman Michal Kempny would be ready for training camp, MacLellan told J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington that he expects the blueliner to be ready when camp gets underway in September. Kempny underwent surgery in April to repair a torn hamstring, a procedure that carries a typical recovery time of four-to-six months.  Fortunately for the Caps, it appears the recovery for Kempny will be on the shorter side.  Winger T.J. Oshie (fractured clavicle) is also expected to be ready for the start of camp.
