Minnesota Wild Recall Eight Players As Black Aces

According to a team announcement, the Minnesota Wild have recalled eight players to serve as Black Aces for the team’s playoff run. The players are forwards Travis Boyd, Brendan Gaunce, Hunter Haight, Ben Jones, and Liam Ohgren, defensemen Cameron Crotty and Carson Lambos, and goaltender Samuel Hlavaj.

Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, didn’t qualify for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs, giving them plenty of flexibility to recall so many players. It is unlikely that any of the eight will appear in a playoff game this postseason. The Wild will want to prioritize experience in their opening round matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights, and Haight, Lambos, and Hlavaj have yet to debut in the NHL, let alone in the playoffs.

Boyd is the only member of the group with postseason experience. From 2017 to 2020, he appeared in six playoff games with the Washington Capitals, scoring one goal and averaging 10:46 of ice time per game. Unfortunately, since Boyd didn’t feature in at least 41 games that season, and didn’t play in the Stanley Cup Final, he doesn’t have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup with the Capitals.

Meanwhile, the quartet of Gaunce, Jones, Ohgren, and Crotty combined for two goals and six points in 63 games for Minnesota this season, with Ohgren scoring both goals and tallying three of the assists. Given the lack of usage throughout the regular season, an unexpected injury during their series against the Golden Knights would be the only feasible reason for any of them to get inserted into the lineup.

Wild Activate Jacob Middleton, Assign Three

The Minnesota Wild snuck one more transaction in before today’s roster deadline, activating defenseman Jacob Middleton off of long-term injured reserve just a few minutes before their freeze per Michael Russo of The Athletic. Middleton will return to the lineup in tonight’s matchup against St. Louis. In a corresponding move, the Wild have also reversed their roster call-ups from yesterday – assigning forwards Travis Boyd and Brendan Gaunce, and defenseman Carson Lambos, to the minor leagues.

Middleton has been out of the lineup since December 12th, when he sustained a hand injury in a match against the Edmonton Oilers. He was placed on long-term injured reserve one day later. His injury forced him out of Minnesota’s last 11 games. It was a noticeable absence for the Wild, who are also bearing with injuries to team captain Jared Spurgeon and superstar Kirill Kaprizov. Middleton has continued to serve as a big body on the Wild’s second pair. He scored five goals and 13 points in Minnesota’s first 29 games, putting him on pace to blow his career-high of 25 points out of the water. He’s also posted a +22 and 15 penalty minutes – both career-bests for the physical defenders.

Middleton is making good use of the final year of his three-year contract with the Wild. He’s surpassed 20 minutes of average ice time for the first time in his seven-year NHL career this season, and served as a crucial lineup piece as top defenders Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin recovered from injuries of their own. Middleton should benefit from Spurgeon’s absence once again upon returning, likely to challenge Brodin for the role of top left-defender next to Brock Faber.

The AHL’s Iowa Wild will get back three routine lineup pieces with this move, and they could stick with Minnesota finally getting injured players back. Boyd and Gaunce lead Iowa in scoring with 20 and 17 points in 22 games respectively. Lambos hasn’t found the same production, with just five points in 27 games, but should get a chance to earn a routine lineup role once more with Middleton back.

Minnesota Wild Place Jared Spurgeon On IR, Recall Three

As expected, the Minnesota Wild have placed defenseman and captain Jared Spurgeon on injured reserve considering he’s likely to miss the next two to three weeks with a lower-body injury. Filling Spurgeon’s spot on the roster, and the two additional openings will be Travis Boyd, Brendan Gaunce, and Carson Lambos after being recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild.

Whether anticipated or not, Spurgeon’s time on injured reserve has significantly impacted the Wild over the past two seasons. Minnesota’s all-time highest-scoring defenseman played 79 games during the 2022-23 season but was limited to just 16 games last year due to back and hip problems that ultimately required surgery. This year, due to lingering issues from last season’s surgeries, and other injuries including the current one, Spurgeon has been limited to 32 of the Wild’s 40 games.

As the highest-paid defenseman on the roster this season with a salary of $7.575MM until 2026-27, Spurgeon could become a major drain on the Wild’s salary cap picture should he not be able to put together a full season. Spurgeon has recorded four goals and 13 points averaging 20:43 of ice time for the Wild this season.

Boyd and Gaunce’s recall may result in a spot in the lineup but they’re valuable forward depth regardless. The two haven’t combined for any points with the Wild this season over eight games but are one in two in scoring for the AHL Wild with 20 points and 17 points, respectively.

Lambos again earns a call-up rather than new high-end defensive prospect David Jiříček. The former 26th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft has struggled immensely since transitioning to professional hockey last year. The Winnipeg native didn’t achieve his NHL debut during his first recall from January 1st to January 5th and has only recorded six goals and 19 points in 96 career games for the AHL Wild.

Wild Reassign Travis Boyd, Jesper Wallstedt

The Wild have returned forward Travis Boyd and goaltender Jesper Wallstedt to AHL Iowa, per the team’s public relations staff. The move leaves them with two open active roster spots and no extra forwards for tomorrow’s game against the Blackhawks, suggesting one of their injured reserve-bound forwards, either Joel Eriksson Ek or Yakov Trenin, might be able to return to the lineup, as Michael Russo of The Athletic relays.

Boyd, 31, was recalled Friday for Minnesota’s back-to-back against Utah and the Jets. It was the veteran’s fourth summons of the season after clearing training camp. None of his recalls have lasted for an extended period of time, with the longest totaling nine days in late November. That’s meant he’s been able to avoid hitting waivers again when the Wild return him to the minors since he hasn’t accumulated enough days on the active roster nor NHL appearances to make his temporary exemption expire.

The Minnesota native was scratched for Friday’s loss to Utah but entered the lineup for last night’s 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Winnipeg, posting a blocked shot in 8:08 of ice time in what was his third NHL appearance of the season and his first since Nov. 27. The 2011 sixth-round pick of the Capitals has averaged a career-low 7:48 per game when dressed, going without a shot on goal and skating on the wing while starting a whopping 88.9% of his even-strength shifts in the defensive zone. That’s naturally led to some pretty horrid possession numbers. The Wild have only controlled 23.5% of shot attempts and 20% of expected goals with Boyd on the ice, but in such a small and biased sample, those numbers shouldn’t be read into much.

The right-shot forward has never posted very favorable possession metrics, though. This far into his professional career, he is what he is – a valuable depth scorer in limited minutes who’s currently being miscast in a defensive role. With forwards ahead of him on the depth chart returning to health, he’ll return to Iowa, where he leads the club in scoring with 18 points in 17 games in his first AHL action since the 2019-20 campaign.

Boyd has averaged 13 goals and 32 points per 82 games throughout his eight-year NHL career, including a career-high 17 goals and 35 points in 74 games three years ago with the Coyotes. After spending most of last season with Arizona on injured reserve with a pectoral muscle tear, he signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Wild when free agency opened to return to his home state for the first time since his senior season at the University of Minnesota a decade ago.

Wallstedt’s demotion suggests Filip Gustavsson could be ready to return to the crease, at least in a backup role, after missing the last four games with a lower-body issue. He never landed on IR, so Minnesota has continuously considered him day-to-day throughout his absence. Wallstedt, the Wild’s top goaltending prospect, allowed five goals on 24 shots against the Jets last night in his second start of the season. It’s been a difficult year for the 22-year-old Swede, who now has a .843 SV% in his two NHL appearances and a subpar .874 mark in 12 AHL games.

That stark regression comes after Wallstedt was an AHL All-Star each of the last two seasons, prompting Minnesota to sign the 2021 20th overall pick to a two-year, $4.4MM extension in October. At least for now, the stumbling Wild will be ecstatic to get Gustavsson’s services back instead. The 26-year-old has returned to his 2022-23 form, logging a stellar .922 SV%, 2.24 GAA, and two shutouts in 22 starts.

Wild Place Yakov Trenin On IR, Recall Devin Shore, Travis Boyd

Dec. 20: Shore is back on the active roster today, as is forward Travis Boyd, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic. Boyd made a pair of appearances with the Wild last month amid one of a couple of recalls this season, averaging just 7:39 per game and controlling an abysmal 21.9% of shot attempts at even strength. The 31-year-old leads Iowa in scoring this season with 18 points (3 G, 15 A) in 17 games and has nearly 300 games of NHL experience under his belt with the Coyotes, Capitals, Maple Leafs and Canucks in addition to his brief stint in Minnesota. The Wild’s active roster is now full.

Dec. 19: The Wild made a pair of roster moves in advance of their next game against Utah on Friday.  The team announced (Twitter link) that winger Yakov Trenin has been placed on injured reserve while winger Devin Shore has been assigned to AHL Iowa.

Trenin has missed three straight games due to an upper-body injury.  Assuming this placement is back-dated, he’ll be eligible to return as soon as this weekend.  The 27-year-old is in his first season with Minnesota after signing a four-year, $14MM contract with them back in free agency, a move that hasn’t worked as well as anyone would have hoped.

After putting up double-digit goals in each of the last three years, Trenin has struggled considerably offensively this season, lighting the lamp just twice while adding one assist in 29 games.  While he sits second on the team in hits with 82, it’s safe to say that GM Bill Guerin was expecting more from his biggest free agent addition from July.

As for Shore, he cleared waivers on Tuesday but stayed with Minnesota for a couple of extra days and played last night against Florida.  He has played in 13 NHL contests so far but has been held off the scoresheet while averaging a little over eight minutes a night.  The veteran has been a strong contributor with Iowa, however, notching two goals and eight assists in 14 appearances with them.

Wild To Reassign Travis Boyd, Expected To Activate Jakub Lauko

The Minnesota Wild are swapping out one forward in favor of another. Michael Russo of The Athletic reports the Wild organization has reassigned forward Travis Boyd to the American Hockey League with Jakub Lauko expected back on Tuesday.

It’s the third time the 31-year-old Boyd has been reassigned back to the AHL’s Iowa Wild this season. The Hopkins, Minnesota native has only made two appearances for the Wild this season going scoreless while averaging 7:39 of ice time per game.

His production in Iowa has been understandably more fruitful. It’s his first stretch in the AHL since the 2019-20 season and he’s collected two goals and 11 points in 13 games. The AHL Wild will now have their third-highest scorer back as they look to stay competitive in a top-heavy AHL Central Division.

Lauko, who’s been on Minnesota’s injured reserve since November 26th due to a lower-body injury, is expected to return to the lineup against the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday. He won’t help fill the voids in the top-six forward group but will add a stabilizing presence to the bottom of the forward core.

He’s skated in 21 games throughout his first year in Minnesota adding two goals and four points overall. Lauko will provide a more physical presence compared to Boyd and should cause some trepidation from opposing teams if he’s placed on a line with Yakov Trenin.

West Notes: Wild, Sasson, Szuber

The Minnesota Wild made a pair of recalls today bringing up forwards Travis Boyd and Reese Johnson from Iowa of the American Hockey League. Boyd has already dressed in two games this season for Minnesota, while Johnson has spent this entire season in the AHL.

The 31-year-old Boyd has gone scoreless in the NHL this season but has put up decent offensive numbers with Iowa, posting two goals and nine assists in 13 AHL games. The Hopkins, Minnesota native is just two years removed from providing several seasons of solid depth scoring, eclipsing 30 points a season from 2021-23.

Johnson on the other hand spent the last two years in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks but has found himself returning to the AHL this season. The 25-year-old has registered three goals and six assists in 18 AHL games this year. At the NHL level, the Regina, Saskatchewan native has posted just 17 points in 141 career NHL games.

In other Western Conference notes:

  • The Vancouver Canucks have reassigned Max Sasson to the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL. The move is likely just a paper transaction as the Canucks attempt to accrue additional cap space to have more flexibility at the NHL trade deadline. Vancouver has done this earlier in the season with Arshdeep Bains and Aatu Räty, and might be making the same move here, although they could be keeping room for a different transaction. The 24-year-old Sasson had two assists in five games with Vancouver and averaged just 8:45 of ice time per game. His possession numbers weren’t great, with a CF% of 40.8% at even strength, but given that he was an undrafted free agent signing, he has likely exceeded expectations thus far.
  • The Utah Hockey Club has assigned defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to the American Hockey League’s Tucson Roadrunners. The 22-year-old was recalled four days ago but didn’t see any NHL action and hasn’t since a single appearance back in April that remains the lone game he’s played in the NHL. The former sixth-round pick isn’t a big point producer but has used his strong passing to post four assists and a goal in 11 AHL games this season.

Wild Recall David Jiricek, Assign Travis Boyd

Top defense prospect David Jiricek has officially joined the Minnesota Wild, receiving an official call-up after a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets placed him on the AHL Iowa Wild roster. Minnesota made room for Jiricek’s recall by re-assigning fowrard Travis Boyd to the minors. Jiricek will head to the NHL while Daemon Hunt, who went the other way in the trade alongside four draft picks, has been assigned to the AHL by Columbus.

Wild head coach John Hynes told reporters, including Dylan Loucks of The Hockey News, that Jiricek is expected to join the team’s practices on Monday.

The Minnesota defense has been firing on all cylinders this season. Half of the blue-line has recorded 10-or-more points on the season, with Jacob Middleton and Brock Faber each tied for the scoring lead with 12 points in 24 games. The bunch has supported Minnesota to the best goals-against per-game of any team in the NHL. They allow just 2.33 goals-against on average, well ahead of the second-place Winnipeg Jets’ 2.50 average. That standing could make ice time hard to find for Jiricek, who only has one assist in six NHL games this season. Jiricek is an incredibly talented puck-carrier, and earned a commendable 10 points in 43 games as a rookie last season. But Jiricek’s impact off of the puck, and overall agility, have left a lot to be desired – part of why he’s totaled a -10 through 53 career games.

Jiricek won’t support Minnesota’s pursuit of top defensive metrics, but his uspide as an offensive asset is sky-high. He was drafted sixth overall in the 2022 NHL Draft after earning an everyday role in the Czechia Extraliga at 16. He played through 67 games, and scored 20 points, with Plzen HC between 2019 and 2022 – but suffered a long-term, lower-body injury at the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The injury would deprive Jiricek of five months of action in his draft year, though he returned with two points in four World Championship games – just enough to convince Columbus that he was still worthy of a top-10 pick.

Jiricek followed the draft with four points in seven games at the rescheduled 2022 World Junior Championships, and joined the Cleveland Monsters one month later. He was productive as a rookie, netting 38 points in his first 55 AHL games – but not managing any scoring through his first four NHL games, waiting until 2023-24 to record his first NHL point. Jiricek has continued to perform well in the minors, with 19 points in 29 AHL games last year and three points in four games this year, but hasn’t yet translated that production to the top flight. Minnesota will represent a change of scenery, so long as he can beat out Zach Bogosian, Jonathon Merrill, or Declan Chisholm for minutes.

Meanwhile, Travis Boyd will return to the minors after two scoreless games for Minnesota. He’s scored two goals and 11 points in 13 games with the Iowa Wild this season, which still stands as second on the team in scoring behind Ben Jones’ 12 points in 14 games. Boyd is a top, veteran presence for Iowa – and should return to a top role with this assignment.

11/25: The Wild organization announced they have terminated the emergency conditions on Boyd’s initial recall and have made him a full recall before tonight’s contest against the Winnipeg Jets.

11/22: Travis Boyd has found his way back to the NHL after a year mired by injury. The Minnesota Wild announced they recalled Boyd from their AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, under emergency conditions.

The most productive years of Boyd’s career were recently spent with the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes organization. Boyd signed a one-year, league-minimum agreement with the Coyotes in the summer of 2021 leading to 17 goals and 35 points in 74 games.

Arizona signed Boyd to a two-year, $3.5MM extension nearly seven months later. Boyd scored a similar 15 goals and 34 points in 82 games the following season with a -32 rating.

Boyd started the 2023-24 season on a solid note, scoring two goals and eight points through the first 16 contests. Unfortunately, Boyd had already played his last game of the season due to a torn pectoral muscle suffered on November 30th against the Colorado Avalanche.

The newfound Utah Hockey Club chose not to re-sign Boyd this offseason making him an unrestricted free agent for the first time in three years. Minnesota quickly signed Boyd to a one-year, $775K contract on the first day of the offseason.

He’s played well for the AHL Wild this season scoring two goals and 11 points through his first 13 AHL contests. He’ll likely serve as insurance tomorrow night against the Calgary Flames if star forward Kirill Kaprizov can’t suit up due to injury.

Wild Announce Roster Moves With Joel Eriksson Ek, Jared Spurgeon Out

3:30 PM : Minnesota has issued an injury update, adding that team captain Jared Spurgeon will also miss Sunday’s game with a lower-body injury. He’s been designated as day-to-day. Spurgeon has recorded one assist, four hits, and six blocks through the first two games, while averaging 19:35 in ice time.

3:00 PM : The Minnesota Wild will be without Joel Eriksson Ek in their Sunday matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, as the centerman bears through a head injury, shares Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The team specified that the injury is a broken nose. Eriksson Ek left Minnesota’s Saturday matchup midway through the second period after taking an elbow to the face from Seattle defender Adam Larsson.

Minnesota has utilized an emergency recall on forward Travis Boyd, and sent goaltender Jesper Wallstedt to the minor leagues, in response to Eriksson Ek’s absence.

Eriksson Ek has served in a pivotal role for Minnesota in the early going, recording 20 minutes of ice time and a goal in the team’s season opener, and adding just shy of 12 minutes of ice time before leaving on Saturday. He’s been the Wild’s clear top centerman, deployed alongside the team’s leading scorer Matt Boldy. That’ll be a tough role for Minnesota to fill for even one game, though top youngster Marco Rossi could be in a prime position to step up. He’s recorded two assists on the season while operating in the middle-six, and seems to have added a strong layer to his game this summer. Rossi will compete with Ryan Hartman for the ice time opened by Eriksson Ek.

Meanwhile, Boyd will look for space in the bottom-six after recording two points in the AHL Iowa Wild’s season opener. He scored eight points in 16 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season but had his season in December by a torn pectoral muscle. Boyd had managed a pair of strong seasons with Arizona in 2021-22 and 2022-23, scoring 35 and 34 points respectively. This recall will provide his first chance to work back to that stout scoring since going down with injury.
