Radim Simek Recalled From Conditioning Assignment

The San Jose Sharks will get an important defenseman back soon, as Radim Simek has been recalled from his AHL conditioning stint. Simek hasn’t played an NHL game since he suffered a major knee injury in March when his leg was caught under Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Copp. The team has also recalled Lean Bergmann from the AHL, while sending Jonny Brodzinski back down.

Simek, 27, played a bigger role than some may remember for the Sharks last season, offering a stabilizing presence to a group that has so many talented offensive weapons. His absence was felt most in the playoffs when the team missed his physical style and this year has been no different.

The Czech defender recorded just nine points in 41 games with the Sharks, but was still named the team’s Rookie of the Year thanks. He’ll be welcomed back as the Sharks try to somehow right the ship this season.

Through the first 15 games of 2019-20, San Jose sits with a 4-10-1 record and look like one of the worst teams in the entire NHL. That record includes the five-game losing streak that they are currently on and has them sitting ahead of only the Ottawa Senators in the standings. Though Simek can’t be the entire answer, getting him back in the lineup will at least help things move in a more positive direction.

Only a few NHL markets will compete with football this Sunday as just two games are on the schedule for tonight. The Calgary Flames will try to continue their recent resurgence in a game against the Washington Capitals, while the Chicago Blackhawks attempt to get anything going against the Anaheim Ducks. As teams prepare for the action, we’ll be here to keep track of all the minor moves.

  • The New Jersey Devils have sent Matt Tennyson to the minor leagues once again, already the fifth transaction of the young season for the veteran defenseman. The Devils don’t have another game until Tuesday, giving them some time to make another move.
  • Joel Hanley is also on his way back to the AHL, with the Dallas Stars also off until Tuesday evening. Hanley played just 11 minutes last night for Dallas and has one point in five games this season.
  • That’s more than Otto Koivula, who didn’t get into a single game with the New York Islanders before being sent back to the AHL today. The 6’4″ winger is still waiting to make his NHL debut, but will be welcomed back to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers where he is a big part of the offense.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights announced they have assigned goaltender Garret Sparks to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. Sparks was brought up as an emergency recall as Marc-Andre Fleury was out sick. However, with the demotion of Sparks, that would suggest that Fleury is expected to be well enough to play against Columbus on Tuesday.
  • The Arizona Coyotes announced they have recalled Michael Chaput from the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL. The 27-year-old AHL veteran will take the place of Brad Richardson, who isn’t expected to join the team for their two-game road trip to Edmonton and Calgary. Chaput has put up five goals and six points in nine AHL games this season. He had five assists in 32 games for Montreal last season.
  • The San Jose Sharks announced they have assigned defenseman Trevor Carrick to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. The blueliner has been up and down, but has played the most of his season with the Sharks, having appeared in three games for them, as opposed to one for the Barracuda. It could also suggest that Carrick is heading to the AHL to make room for Radim Simek, who is expected to be activated off of injured reserve.
  • The Buffalo Sabres made a few moves in anticipation of their trip to Sweden. The team announced they have recalled defenseman Lawrence Pilut from the Rochester Americans of the AHL, while the team placed defenseman Marco Scandella on injured reserve. Pilut has fared quite well in Rochester, posting a goal and six points in eight games this year. Scandella suffered a lower-body injury during Thursday’s game against the Rangers. He is expected to miss two to three weeks. The team also announced that Rochester goaltender Andrew Hammond will be accompanying Buffalo on its trip as an emergency third goaltender.

Pacific Notes: Sharks Roster, Lucic, Larsson, Richardson

With a drastically poor start, the San Jose Sharks find themselves at the bottom of the Pacific Division 4-10-1 record, tied for the second-worst record in the NHL. That wasn’t what most people expected at the start of the season and Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News wonders when change might start happening if the team doesn’t quickly turn things around.

The team is currently in the midst of dropping five straight and being outscored 22-8 in that span. The scribe writes that while the Sharks haven’t had too many poor starts in the last 15 years, general manager Doug Wilson hasn’t sat and watched often. The team made some small moves to shake things up in 2015 when they started 0-5-1, but also made bigger moves back in 2005 when they went out and acquired Joe Thornton to shake up the team.

Now word what Wilson might do now, but the team likely will make some smaller roster moves to start. Assuming he stays healthy during his AHL game Sunday, the Sharks are likely to recall defenseman Radim Simek and place him next to Brent Burns, moving rookie Mario Ferraro next to Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The team may also recall rookie Lean Bergmann, who has looked sharp in four games with the Barracuda with three goals and three assists, and could help the team’s fourth line.

However, if things don’t start to improve soon, don’t be surprised if Wilson begins to make major changes to the roster. Also of note, the Sharks do not have their first-round pick this year as they traded it to the Ottawa Senators for Erik Karlsson back in 2018.

  • NHL.com’s John Shannon reports that Calgary Flames winger Milan Lucic, who hit Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward Kole Sherwood late on a play, already had his hearing today. There has been no word on the league’s decision yet, which could come later today, but Shannon mentions that Lucic is not considered to be a repeat offender. He was last suspended in 2016, although he was fined last year. That will likely be considered by the league when they make their decision.
  • Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal writes that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Adam Larsson, who suffered a fractured fibula after playing in just one games this season, is now skating and could be back in two or three weeks. Larsson, the team’s best defensive defenseman, was projected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering the injury.
  • The Arizona announced earlier today they have recalled Michael Chaput to take the place of injured forward Brad Richardson. However, The Athletic’s Craig Morgan reports that to make room for Chaput, the Coyotes have placed Richardson on injured reserve, retroactive to his injury date, which means he can be activated whenever he is ready.

Evening Notes: Sabourin, Gustafsson, Sekera, Brodzinski

After a gruesome hit that saw Ottawa Senators forward Scott Sabourin get knocked unconscious and fall face first into the ice after colliding with Boston Bruins forward David Backes, the Senators got some good news. Sabourin, who laid motionless for an extended period of time, gave a thumbs up to fans as he was carted off the ice (video here).

The Senators then followed up with a statement (via Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch):

“Scott Sabourin was transported to local hospital by ambulance for evaluation. He was conscious and speaking with the attending doctors at the time of leaving the arena.”

Backes, may also have been injured on the play when both attempted to hit each other during the incident. After staying with Sabourin while he was down on the ice, Backes went to the locker room and didn’t return. The Bruins later announced he would not return. Backes, who has an concussion history, may have suffered another one.

  • After an impressive season last year in which he tallied 17 goals and 60 points, few people would have expected Chicago Blackhawks’ defenseman Erik Gustafsson to be a healthy scratch this year, but head coach Jeremy Colliton said that Gustafsson will be in the press box Saturday as he has struggled finding his game so far this year. The 27-year-old blueliner has four assists in 11 games, but hasn’t been the top-four defenseman the team was hoping for. “We think he can be better,” said Colliton (via The Athletic’s Scott Powers). Sometimes coming out of the lineup can be the spark. … We think he can be better in both areas (offense & defense). He’ll get feedback and it’s up to him to respond.”
  • Sean Shapiro of The Athletic reports that Dallas Stars defenseman Andrej Sekera is closing in on a return. The veteran blueliner, out with an undisclosed injury, skated Saturday, but head coach Jim Montgomery said he wasn’t sure if Sekera would be ready to go on Tuesday. Sekera has appeared in 13 games for Dallas this year, averaging 20:36 of ATOI.
  • The Mercury News’ Curtis Palshelka reports that San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer stated that forward Jonny Brodzinski is out Saturday and likely will be out for some time after suffering a shoulder injury. The scribe also notes that the injury is not the same shoulder that held him out for most of the 2018-19 season. Pashelka adds that defenseman Radim Simek is expected to play in another AHL game with the San Jose Barracuda on Sunday with the hopes that he might return to the Sharks soon after that.

Dylan Gambrell To Miss At Least Two Games, Radim Simek To Be Re-Evaluated After Next AHL Game

  • Sharks center Dylan Gambrell has been ruled out through the weekend due to an upper-body injury, reports Kevin Kurz of The Athletic (Twitter link). That means he’ll miss at least the next two games.  Meanwhile, Kurz adds that defenseman Radim Simek will play another game in the minors on his rehab assignment on Friday and then be re-evaluated to see if he’s ready to make his season debut with the Sharks.  With no timeline for Dalton Prout to return, they could certainly use the extra depth on the roster.

Several people were a little surprised that the Edmonton Oilers chose to recall forward Gaetan Haas from the Bakersfield Condors after two games when fourth-line winger Josh Archibald went down with a broken foot. Haas was sent down to work on his game on North American rinks, but the team felt they needed to recall him after two games and one assist.

Edmonton Journal’s Kurt Leavins writes that many in the organization were fearful that Haas would choose to return to Europe if he was expected to stay in the AHL for much longer, however, which could be the reason for the recall. The scribe wonders whether prospect Kailer Yamamoto might have been a better choice as the 21-year-old can kill penalties and serve on the fourth line, but that decision has been put on hold.

  • The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz reports that San Jose Sharks defenseman Radim Simek has returned to San Jose. The blueliner has sat out all season as he recovers from a leg injury he sustained last season. According to Kurz, Simek is expected to begin a conditioning stint with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL, a good sign that he is close to returning and adding some much needed defensive depth. Simek played 41 games for the Sharks last season, scoring a goal and nine points.
  • Sportsnet’s Brendan Batchelor writes that Vancouver Canucks forward Tyler Motte is expected to miss at least a week, possibly two, after he suffered a lower-body injury against the Washington Capitals on Friday while blocking a shot. The 24-year-old Motte has played a key role on the team’s bottom-six and has just one assist over six games. While many people felt that Loui Eriksson might be recalled, the team already recalled Adam Gaudette to cover the loss.
  • David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that center Nicolas Roy will make his Vegas’ debut tonight when the Golden Knights face off against the Anaheim Ducks. Roy came over as part of a package that sent winger Erik Haula to Carolina. The 6-foot-4 Roy was expected to be developed into a fourth-line option for Vegas. He is expected to take over as the team’s fourth-line center, while Tomas Nosek, who has filled that role will move to the third line.
  • Fox Sports’ Jon Rosen reports that the Los Angeles Kings will have their own debut as KHL winger Nikolai Prokhorkin is expected to make his debut tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks. The 26-year-old winger signed with the Kings out of the KHL after a 20-goal season there, but failed to make the team out of training camp. He has appeared in four games with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, picking up two assists. However, the team is hoping he can add some offense to the struggling Kings squad.

 

Pacific Notes: Dillon, Schmidt, Subban, Gudbranson

Many in Toronto, after watching a San Jose Sharks’ hit against Auston Matthews Friday night, felt that the Sharks’ Brenden Dillon deserved to have the hit looked at by the Department of Player Safety. However, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports that Dillon won’t face any supplemental discipline for the hit as the belief is that the head was not the main point of contact.

Dillon hit Matthews at 11:30 in the second period of Friday’s game just as Matthews was entering the Sharks’ offensive zone as Dillon’s hands appeared to go high on the Maple Leafs’ forward. There was no penalty on the play. Matthews left the game and underwent concussion protocol. However, he did return in the third period.

  • After a embarrassing performance against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday, the Vegas Golden Knights got a hint at the potential return of one of their top players as Vegas’ head coach Gerard Gallant said that defenseman Nate Schmidt could be close to a return. “I’d love to have him in my lineup, trust me, and he’s going to be there soon,” said Gallant, via Ken Boehlke of Sinbin.vegas. Schmidt suffered a lower-body injury on the first game of the season and has been out ever since. However, he has resumed skating. Considered to be the team’s top defenseman, the team is eager to get him back into their lineup.
  • David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that the Vegas Golden Knights could be getting back goaltender Malcolm Subban soon. The backup goaltender suffered a lower-body injury and has missed eight straight games. However, the scribe reports that his equipment was seen in front of his locker, which would suggest he’s ready to skate and could return to the lineup soon. Garrett Sparks is currently the backup for Vegas.
  • After attempting to add both Kevin Shattenkirk and Justin Faulk earlier this year, the Anaheim Ducks finally were able to trade for a veteran defenseman Friday when they acquired blueliner Erik Gudbranson. In fact, the Ducks had been interested in acquiring him for quite a while, according to Eric Stephens of The Athletic (subscription required). “This is something we have been looking at for some time. We haven’t been tough enough to play against and hopefully Erik can help us address part of that need,” general manager Bob Murray said.

Atlantic Notes: Mete, Trocheck, Krejci, Miller

The Montreal Canadiens don’t have a lot on their plate this offseason when it comes to their own free agents. However, that isn’t stopping the franchise from trying to sign defenseman Victor Mete, who is playing in the final year of his entry-level contract. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the Canadiens have already begun negotiations with the 21-year-old.

Mete surprised a few people several years ago when he made the roster out of training camp at 19 years old and his fast skating and defensive-first abilities might complement veteran Shea Weber. However, Weber got injured and Mete struggled, playing 49 games, but was often scratched due to the fact that he wasn’t ready. He settled in last season, playing 71 games and has been a solid defensive presence since then. Mete finally scored his first NHL goal last week after going scoreless in 126 straight games.

The Canadiens’ only other significant off-season contract that it will need to deal with other than Mete’s will be that of Max Domi, who will also be a restricted free agent next summer.

  • NHL.com’s Jameson Olive reports that Florida Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck, who hasn’t played since Oct. 19 with an lower-body injury, was practicing with the team today in a yellow non-contact jersey. Trocheck who has a foot/ankle injury is travelling with the team and is listed as day-to-day. After a down season last year while dealing with a broken ankle, the team needs Trocheck to put up a big season. The 26-year-old has a goal and five assists in eight games.
  • NBC Sports’ Joe Haggerty writes that Boston Bruins center David Krejci, who is out with an upper-body injury, is expected to miss both games this weekend. However, the scribe adds that Krejci is close and should be able to return at some point next week with a likely date of Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks, although head coach Bruce Cassidy said a decision on that won’t be made until Monday. Haggerty also writes that defenseman Kevan Miller should be ready to practice at some point next week. Miller has been out with a fractured kneecap.

Sharks Sign Dillon Hamaliuk To Entry-Level Contract

While the San Jose Sharks were busy facing the Canadiens in Montreal on Thursday night, the front office was still hard at work as well. CapFriendly reports that the team has come to terms with prospect forward Dillon Hamaliuk on an entry-level contract. The team has signed the junior forward to a three-year deal that carries a $700K base salary in years one and two and a $750K salary in year three, with a $92.5K signing bonus in each season and performances bonuses totaling a $809K cap hit in all three years.

Hamaliuk, 18, was San Jose’s second round pick this past June in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft from the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds. Hamaliuk was considered a reach in round two at the time, having not yet proved himself as an elite offensive talent. Hamaliuk has just one full junior season on his resume, a 2017-18 campaign in which he recorded only 39 points in 72 games. Last year, injuries limited Hamaliuk to just 31 games with Seattle, but he scored at a much higher clip to total 26 points on the year. The Sharks must have liked what they saw in that limited action, as they reached for the big winger at No. 55. So far this season, it looks like their move may have paid off. Hamaliuk, now with the Kelowna Rockets following an off-season trade, has five goals and ten points in only 12 games.

Even if Hamaliuk continues his torrid scoring pact this season in Kelowna, don’t expect him in the NHL right away next year, regardless of the entry-level deal. While he has the size and strength to compete at the pro level, Hamaliuk is still somewhat of a raw player, who relies heavily on his athleticism and aggressive style. The 6’3” left wing needs to continue to focus on improving his skating and skills before making the jump. His contract will now be waiting for him once he’s ready. With proper development, Hamaliuk could prove to have been a steal by the Sharks as he grows into a dangerous power forward.

It was another exciting night in the NHL on Sunday, with five games on the schedule. Perhaps most interesting was the Edmonton Oilers-Winnipeg Jets tilt, in which both Mike Smith and Connor Hellebuyck recorded shutouts. That’s right, both goaltenders shut the door on every shot in regulation and overtime, leading Smith to receive a shutout loss after Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine both scored in the shootout. Tonight should have more of the same excitement with four games on tap, including a Western Conference battle between the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues. As teams prepare for the action, we’ll be right here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled J.C. Beaudin for their game tonight against the Dallas Stars. Beaudin was acquired in February from the Colorado Avalanche and has yet to make his NHL debut.
  • The New Jersey Devils have recalled Matt Tennyson from the minor leagues once again, after only being assigned yesterday. Tennyson has played in three games for the Devils this season, actually recording two points. Though that total wouldn’t be notable for many players, Tennyson actually hadn’t registered an NHL point since March of 2017.
  • The San Jose Sharks have recalled Jonny Brodzinski and Trevor Carrick from the minor leagues, continuing their pattern of bouncing players back and forth between game days. Carrick has already been involved in seven transactions since the start of the month, while playing three times for the Sharks.
