Devils Re-Sign Kurtis MacDermid For Three Years

The Devils have filled their enforcer role for the foreseeable future, re-signing winger/defenseman Kurtis MacDermid to a three-year, $3.45MM contract on Friday. The deal carries a $1.15MM cap hit and is paid out entirely in base salary, earning him $1.25MM in 2024-25, $1.2MM in 2025-26 and $1MM in 2026-27.  PuckPedia adds that $250K next season and $200K from his 2025-26 salary will come in the form of signing bonuses.

New Jersey acquired MacDermid, 30, via trade from the Avalanche on March 1, sending Colorado the signing rights to center prospect Zakhar Bardakov and the Predators’ seventh-round pick, 215th overall, in this year’s draft. He played in 16 games for the Devils down the stretch, lining up at forward for all of them, contributing an assist while racking up 50 PIMs during his short stint in the Garden State.

He’ll now have the opportunity to add many more over the next three seasons. MacDermid first broke into the league with the Kings in 2017-18, over five years after they initially signed him as an undrafted free agent out of the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack.

He’s remained in the league as a seventh defenseman/13th forward ever since and hasn’t been assigned to the minors since the 2018-19 campaign. In 265 career games, the 6’5″ heavyweight has 11 goals, 31 points, a -24 rating and 368 PIMs with Colorado, Los Angeles and New Jersey.

MacDermid was also briefly a member of the Kraken, who selected him from the Kings in the 2021 expansion draft. He remained a member of the organization for all of six days before they flipped him to the Avs for a 2023 fourth-round pick (later flipped to the Sharks for Jaycob Megna, used to select defenseman Luca Cagnoni). He was on the roster for Colorado’s Stanley Cup win in 2022 but didn’t suit up in any playoff games after making a career-high 58 regular season appearances.

Today’s extension is the richest deal MacDermid has earned in his NHL career, beating out the two-year, $1.975MM extension he signed with the Avalanche in 2022. It’s his first three-year deal since his entry-level contract. He was set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

West Notes: Hronek, Vilardi, Tourigny, Bardakov

In an appearance on Sekeres and Price (video link), Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli discusses the importance of the Canucks avoiding salary arbitration with pending RFA defenseman Filip Hronek.  The team may view Quinn Hughes’ $7.85MM cap hit as a ceiling they don’t want to surpass when it comes to spending on their defensemen.  However, Hronek has already set career highs in assists (40) and points (45) this season while logging over 23 minutes a night.  Arbitration-eligible for the first time this summer, the two sides going to a hearing could push Hronek’s award past the $7MM mark.  Accordingly, settling before it gets to that point should be high on Vancouver’s priority list this offseason.

  • Jets center Gabriel Vilardi returned to practice today as he works his way back from an enlarged spleen. Murat Ates of The Athletic notes (Twitter link) that the 24-year-old is expected to skate with the team every day this week as he works on getting back into playing condition.  When healthy, Vilardi has been a key producer for Winnipeg this season, notching 16 goals and 14 assists in just 38 games so far.
  • Coyotes head coach Andre Tourigny is expected to serve as Canada’s head coach at the upcoming World Championship although it’s not yet official, TSN’s Darren Dreger reports. Tourigny served in that role last year, helping lead Canada to the gold medal.
  • Avalanche prospect Zakhar Bardakov intends to sign with Colorado and play in North America after next season, his agent Shumi Babaev told Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now. The 23-year-old was picked up from New Jersey in the Kurtis MacDermid trade and had a dozen points in 51 games with SKA St. Petersburg this season.  Bardakov’s KHL deal is expiring and Babaev noted that Bardakov intends to play next season in that league; it remains to be seen if that will be with SKA or another organization.

Devils Acquire Kurtis MacDermid From Avalanche

The Devils have acquired winger/defenseman Kurtis MacDermid from the Avalanche in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round pick and the signing rights to center prospect Zakhar Bardakov, per a team release. New Jersey didn’t have an opening on its roster before the trade, so winger Brian Halonen has been assigned to AHL Utica in a corresponding transaction, per CapFriendly.

The 29-year-old MacDermid moves to his third NHL team, spending four years with the Kings before joining the Avalanche via trade in 2021. Strictly an enforcer, MacDermid was briefly a member of the Kraken after they selected him from the Kings in the 2021 Expansion Draft, but they dealt him to Colorado for a fourth-round pick less than a week after picking him up. Primarily playing defense in his days with Los Angeles, he’s shifted to wing on a deeper Colorado blue-line, averaging 7:12 per game over his 131 appearances in the Mile High City.

MacDermid logged 29 games for the Avs this year, recording two goals and a +3 rating with an unusually low 23 PIMs. He has been a healthy scratch in nine of Colorado’s 12 games since the beginning of February.

New Jersey, who already has eight defensemen on the roster, will utilize MacDermid in a similar role. He’ll likely skate as their fourth-line left wing when in the lineup, rotating in and out with players like Tomáš Nosek and Chris Tierney.

The Avalanche, on the other hand, likely care more about clearing MacDermid’s $987.5K cap hit than they do about losing his bottom-six presence. They now have two open roster spots and $2.3MM in space with captain Gabriel Landeskog and goaltender Pavel Francouz on long-term injured reserve, significantly opening up their options to take on a player with double salary retention. They could realistically take on a player whose cap hit is in the $8MM range if the selling team and a third party each retain 50% of his contract.

MacDermid is in the second season of a two-year, $1.975MM contract and will reach unrestricted free agency this summer. If the Devils choose to buy at the deadline in a last-ditch effort to make the playoffs, they have $8.3MM in space remaining with Dougie Hamilton on LTIR for the rest of the season, per CapFriendly.

In Bardakov, the Avs pick up a 2021 Devils seventh-round pick who’s remained in his native Russia since his draft year. The 23-year-old Seversk native logged middle-six minutes for second-place SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, scoring six goals and 12 points in 51 games with a -3 rating.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and nearly 200 lbs, Bardakov possesses a physical element to his game and adds slightly to a thin pool of center prospects in Colorado. His contract with St. Petersburg is up this season, so he’s an option to sign with Colorado once SKA St. Petersburg’s run in the Gagarin Cup Playoffs, which began today, wraps up.

29-year-old 220-game NHL veteran Kurtis MacDermid is known for bringing one thing to the NHL teams that employ him: physicality. The six-foot-five, 233-pound former Erie Otter has racked up 295 career penalty minutes and 162 career hits. For most of his career, MacDermid has played as a defenseman, contributing only very rarely to the offense. Now, though, it appears that might be changing.

According to The Athletic’s Peter Baugh, the Avalanche view MacDermid as a forward, not a defenseman, and discussed that sort of change at the end of last season. The change might suit MacDermid as he ages, as his lack of speed would be less likely to be exposed were he a winger rather than a defenseman potentially left to defend against aggressive rushing attackers. MacDermid is playing out the final season of a $987k AAV deal, meaning this position change could also have a financial implication as well, as if it allows him to get into the NHL lineup more regularly (he played in a little over half the Avalanche’s games last season) he could be in a better position hitting the open market.

Some other notes from across the NHL:

  • Columbus Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports that sniper Yegor Chinakhov is day to day with a back strain, which explains his absence from the ice at Blue Jackets training camp for the past few days. It’s an important camp for Chinakhov, 22, as he’s looking to carve out a spot for himself in new coach Pascal Vincent’s lineup. The Blue Jackets have a logjam at forward and quite a few players competing against Chinakhov for the same role, so the 2020 first-round pick will hope that he can get back on the ice quickly to make some progress in camp.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the hires of hired Mackenzie Braid as Skating Coach and Jeff Murray as Assistant Skating Coach. Per the club, “In their new roles, Braid and Murray will build out the club’s skating development program and work with the player development department and coaching staffs in Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and Wheeling to implement that program.” Braid has previous NHL experience with both Vancouver and Anaheim, while Jeff Murray was last seen as a player playing fourth-division German hockey for ERV Schweinfurt in 2019-20.

Kurtis MacDermid Out 4-6 Weeks

Hybrid winger/defenseman Kurtis MacDermid will be out four to six weeks with a lower-body injury, according to Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar. MacDermid left the game on Saturday and did not return. The team has recalled Jayson Megna and Sampo Ranta, with the latter expected to play tonight.

MacDermid, 28, is something of a utility player for the Avalanche, playing a handful of minutes whenever they need some added toughness in the lineup. In eight games this season he has one point, 14 penalty minutes, and 22 hits – all while averaging fewer than eight minutes a game. For his career, the 6’5″ behemoth has 23 points in 184 games.

Ranta, meanwhile, is an interesting prospect for the team, who suited up for two games earlier this season but barely played. The 22-year-old is still looking for his first NHL point and is by no means a replacement for MacDermid’s toughness. That role will go to Andreas Englund, who was recalled yesterday. He’ll make his Colorado debut and help on the penalty kill, adding another big frame to the blueline. In 33 NHL games, all with the Ottawa Senators, Englund has three points.

The NHL has named Panthers goaltender Spencer Knight as the Rookie of the Month for April.  The 21-year-old finished up his first full professional campaign on a high note, posting a 2.16 GAA along with a .925 SV% in seven starts for Florida this month.  With veteran Sergei Bobrovsky’s numbers checking in at 3.27 and .893 respectively over that same stretch, Knight has made a strong push for playing time in their upcoming playoff series against Washington.  He’s the second Panther to get the award this season, joining center Anton Lundell who received the honor in January.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • Sabres goaltender/surprise anthem singer Malcolm Subban told reporters today, including Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News (Twitter link) that he’d love to return to Buffalo next season. The pending unrestricted free agent was traded to the Sabres in December but got into just four games before suffering a season-ending upper-body injury back in January.  After clearing waivers earlier in the year, it seems likely that Subban’s best fit would be as a third-string netminder and Buffalo will likely have an opening in that spot with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen expected to be up full-time in the NHL next season.
  • Veteran forward Chris Bourque announced (Twitter link) that he is retiring. The 36-year-old played in 51 career NHL games over parts of four seasons with Washington, Pittsburgh, and Boston while spending 13 years in the minors where he’s 20th in all-time AHL scoring with 746 points.  Bourque spent the past three seasons with Ingolstadt in Germany, collecting 134 points in 141 games.
  • Avalanche defenseman Kurtis MacDermid and winger Logan O’Connor avoided any suspensions from the league for their actions against Minnesota on Friday. However, both will be a little lighter in the wallet as the Department of Player Safety announced (Twitter links) that both players received fines worth half of one day’s salary, the maximum allowable under the CBA.  MacDermid was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for kneeing winger Marcus Foligno who looked to be seriously injured on the play.  O’Connor, meanwhile, had cross-checked defenseman Dmitry Kulikov although the blueliner was eventually able to return to the game.

Kurtis MacDermid Signs Two-Year Extension

The Colorado Avalanche have signed Kurtis MacDermid to a two-year extension, one that keeps him under contract through the 2023-24 season. The deal will pay MacDermid $975K in the first year and $1.0MM in the second, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

MacDermid, 28, is mostly a defenseman, though he has actually lined up a handful of times this season for the Avalanche, whenever they need a bit of extra physicality upfront. The 6’5″ behemoth is one of the most imposing players in the league, and plays a style of hockey not usually found in the NHL these days.

Averaging just over seven minutes a night through 53 games, he sort of represents the classic enforcer, though he has just six fighting majors on the year. Instead, he racks up hits in his short shifts, totaling 96 on the year despite playing only 395 total minutes. That goes along with 72 penalty minutes, second on the Avalanche (Gabriel Landeskog, 78), and five points. Should he reach nine, it would represent a career-high.

MacDermid has now played in 171 NHL games and is obviously a valued member of the Avalanche organization, not bad for a player who went undrafted and played three full years of junior even after his entry-level contract was originally signed. He was actually the Seattle Kraken’s choice in last year’s expansion draft from the Los Angeles Kings, though he never actually played for the club. The Avalanche spent a fourth-round pick to get him, and now have given him some additional stability with another two-year, one-way contract.

While he may not play every game over the next two seasons, a contract like this represents almost zero risk for the Avalanche. The entire cap hit–of $987.5K–can be buried in the minor leagues if necessary, though that would require him to pass through waivers.

Seattle Kraken Trade Kurtis MacDermid To Colorado

The Seattle Kraken have completed another trade, this time sending defenseman Kurtis MacDermid to the Colorado Avalanche. MacDermid was Seattle’s choice from the Los Angeles Kings, but instead of suiting up for the expansion team, he’ll net them a 2023 fourth-round pick.

MacDermid, 27, represents the second player the Kraken have flipped since the expansion draft, following Tyler Pitlick’s trade a few days ago. Seattle selected ten defensemen in the draft, so were always expected to trade a few of them before the start of the season. In Colorado, MacDermid joins a contending team that could use a bit of size and depth on the back end after trading away Ryan Graves earlier this offseason.

The 6’5″ defenseman is incredibly physical, but has also shown he can be a bit more than just a face-puncher over the last few years. In 118 career games he has six goals and 17 points, playing limited minutes—fewer than 13 a night—in Los Angeles. He likely won’t be asked to do much more than that in Colorado, where the team already has so many talented young options to eat up minutes. At just $875K though, MacDermid can be a reliable seventh defenseman on the NHL roster, moving in and out of the lineup whenever head coach Jared Bednar feels the need for a little more size.

The cost of a fourth-round pick isn’t much for Colorado to add an NHL player, but to the Kraken it’s another important piece as they look to build the pipeline. The team was unable (or perhaps unwilling) to leverage the expansion situation to collect many draft picks and now must try to sell off whatever pieces they can. Cap space was the biggest focus of GM Ron Francis and company, but it is interesting that now Pitlick and MacDermid, two NHL options that barely crack $2.5MM combined, are the first ones out the door. The Kraken now have an extra fourth-round selection in each of the next two drafts.

The Seattle Kraken expansion picks were submitted to the league this morning, and after the conclusion of tonight’s Expansion Draft, everything has become official. It was a rather anticlimactic evening, as all of the picks had been leaked accurately throughout the day. It is important to note that considering some puzzling player selections and a large amount of cap space, more moves from the Kraken should happen later this week.

The Kraken finish with $29MM in cap space, via CapFriendly. Notable RFAs include Twarynski, Dunn, Borgen, and Cholowski. They could be looking at players like Geekie to make the full-time jump to the NHL next season, but for now, the roster looks relatively filled out. It’s got to be expected at this point that some defensemen will be dealt off the roster, as they currently sit with 10 at the NHL level with none of them being waiver-eligible.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/16/21

It appears as though there will be daily movement this season between the active roster and taxi squad, and although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of shuffle news each day.

  • The Canadiens announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled center Jake Evans from the taxi squad in advance of their game tonight against Edmonton. The 24-year-old served as their fourth-line pivot in their opener against Toronto and should be in that role against the Oilers as well.
  • Morgan Geekie has been summoned from Carolina’s taxi squad, per a team release. The recall is on an emergency basis and may pertain to Jordan Staal’s placement on the COVID-protocol list on Friday.  Geekie played in two games with the Hurricanes last season, recording three goals and one assist.
  • The Avalanche announced (Twitter link) that they have assigned defenseman Conor Timmins to the taxi squad. Meanwhile, blueliner Bowen Byram was recalled from AHL Colorado.  To make room on the taxi squad, forwards Shane Bowers and Logan O’Connor were assigned to the Eagles.  Timmins has played in both games so far this season, logging a little over 15 minutes per night.
  • The Maple Leafs have recalled winger Nicholas Robertson from their taxi squad and sent Alexander Barabanov down, the team announced. Robertson played in four games against Columbus in the Qualifying Round last summer but tonight marks his first regular season NHL contest.  Barabanov, meanwhile, has played in both games for Toronto so far but logged just 4:19 on Friday night against Ottawa.
  • The Kings have made a series of roster moves, notes Jack A. Harris of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link). With Cal Petersen, Sean Walker, and Kurtis MacDermid all being activated to the roster from the COVID protocol list, defenseman Mark Alt and Tobias Bjornfot along with goalie Jacob Ingham were sent to the taxi squad.  To make room on that group, Los Angeles also assigned defenseman Austin Strand and goalie Matthew Villalta to Ontario (AHL).
  • Nashville has recalled forward Mathieu Olivier from the taxi squad, adding some physicality up front. The big forward made his NHL debut last season and saw eight games of action with the Predators while also setting new AHL career highs with the Milwaukee Admirals in his second pro season. The Mississippi native could be a frequent fourth line option for Nashville this season given his size, engery, and propensity for checking.
  • Derek Ryan and Oliver Kylington have been activated to the roster of the Calgary Flames, the team announced. Two of the bigger names to hit the waiver wire during training camp, Ryan and Kylington both cleared and were assigned to the taxi squad. However, it didn’t take long for the pair to get back in action for Calgary.
