Joe Snively Signs With Djurgardens IF
Free agent forward Joe Snively has signed a one-year contract with Djurgardens IF, the Swedish team announced via press release on Wednesday.
Snively has spent most of his career in the Capitals organization after initially signing an entry-level contract with Washington in March 2019. He signed a couple of more contracts with the Caps, including a two-year, one-way deal in 2022, before reaching unrestricted free agency last summer. The 29-year-old spent last season with the Red Wings on a two-way deal, clearing waivers during training camp and spending the entirety of the campaign on assignment to AHL Grand Rapids.
In his last three seasons for the Capitals, Snively appeared in a total of 27 NHL regular-season games, scoring six goals and 11 points in 11:40 of ice time per contest.
A diminutive 5’9″ left-winger who was an ECAC All-Star at Yale, Snively will play international hockey for the first time after three seasons of junior hockey with USHL Sioux City, four collegiate seasons, and six full professional campaigns in the NHL and AHL.
Snively had hovered around a point per game for AHL Hershey while in Washington’s system in recent years, but he managed only 21 goals and 47 points in 72 games for Grand Rapids in 2024-25. It’s not surprising to see Detroit show little interest in retaining him as a result.
The Virginia native pauses his AHL career with 219 points in 292 career minor-league games over the last seven years. He joins a Djurgarden team, likely headlined by 2025 No. 3 overall pick Anton Frondell, if he doesn’t make the Blackhawks’ roster, which is looking to stick in the top-level SHL after gaining promotion from the HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second-tier pro league, this year.

Washington Capitals Loan Joe Snively To AHL Affiliate
The Washington Capitals announced today that they are returning forward Joe Snively to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Hershey Bears. It was the second move of the day by Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan after the team placed Lucas Johansen on waivers earlier today.
The 27-year-old Snively dressed in three games during his recent recall and didn’t register a point during that time. It was the third season in a row that Snively has received an NHL recall as he has played in 27 NHL games over the past two and a half seasons. To this point in his NHL career the native of Herndon, Virginia has six goals and five assists.
This most recent recall didn’t go particularly well for Snively as he struggled to drive play and found himself sheltered by the coaching staff as he received the bulk of his shift starts in the offensive zone. He played just 5:43 in Washington’s 2-1 shootout win against the Carolina Hurricanes last night.
In the AHL Snively has been a strong offensive contributor having registered 134 points in 176 career AHL games. This season with the Bears, the undersized forward has posted seven goals and 14 assists in 25 games.
Snively might not have had a particularly good showing during this recall, but he will likely remain one of the Capitals’ better options should they need to recall a forward later in the season.
Capitals Place Sonny Milano On Injured Reserve
The Capitals placed winger Sonny Milano on injured reserve for undisclosed reasons Thursday, per a team announcement. To replace his spot on the active roster, the team recalled forward Joe Snively from the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Milano, 27, has one point in his last nine games and was a healthy scratch one week ago today against the Stars. It’s been a trying season for the scoring winger, who also missed one game in late October due to illness.
It’s unclear what will keep Milano out of the lineup for the next seven days and four games at minimum. He was a full participant in the Capitals’ last game, a tilt against the Blackhawks last Sunday, in which he logged one shot on goal in 10:15 of ice time.
On the season, Milano has four goals and four assists in 23 games while averaging 12:12 per game. Those numbers are down across the board from last season in the U.S. capital, when he logged 11 goals and 33 points in 64 games. The high-skill winger is coming off back-to-back seasons of 30-plus points.
A 2014 first-round pick of the Blue Jackets, Milano is now on his third organization but has never really managed to become a true everyday NHLer. He’s logged some impressive point totals in limited ice time, but inconsistencies in his game have made him a healthy scratch frequently throughout his career, although it’s a rarer occurrence now. His possession numbers are down sharply from last season, posting a 44.5% Corsi share at even strength compared to last year’s 50.6% figure, which was above the team average.
Milano will be eligible to return from his IR stint on December 21 against Columbus. He is in the first season of a three-year, $5.7MM extension signed with the Capitals last February.
This is the first recall of the season for Snively, who’s played 12 games for Washington in each of the past two seasons. The 27-year-old Yale graduate is a tenacious forechecker who’s been able to produce solid numbers in limited major-league action, posting six goals and five assists in his 24 career appearances while averaging 12:05 per game. Either he or Matthew Phillips will enter the lineup tonight against the Flyers in Milano’s absence. Snively’s off to a good start in Hershey, ranking third on the team in scoring with seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 25 games.

Washington Capitals Recall Joe Snively
The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Joe Snively from their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, according to a team announcement.
With three games left in the Capitals’ season and making the playoffs out of the picture, Snively now gets the chance to play in his first NHL game since March 14th, when he played 11 and a half minutes in a 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers.
NBC Sports Washington’s Matt Weyrich relays word from Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette that veteran forward T.J. Oshie is being shut down for the season, so it’s likely that this recall was made now that the possibility of Oshie returning to the lineup has been scuttled.
On the status of Oshie, Laviolette also said that he can’t at the moment give an “accurate answer” on whether Oshie’s injury will require surgery, but noted that it’s something that has bothered the 36-year-old for a while. Oshie is under contract through 2025 at a $5.75MM cap hit, and ranks third on the Capitals with 19 goals this season.
Snively, 27, first truly popped up on scout’s radars during his freshman season at Yale University, where he led the team with 28 points in 32 games and captured ECAC Rookie of the Year honors. Snively ended up having an illustrious collegiate career, finishing with 58 goals and 139 points in 129 games.
He was named an ECAC Second-Team All-Star as a junior and First-Team ECAC All-Star as a senior, and after wrapping up his NCAA career Snively signed with the Capitals, who play their home games about 25 miles away from Herndon, Virginia, where Snively is from.
After a hot nine-game start to his pro career and two more years developing in Hershey, Snively made his NHL debut last season. He played quite a bit above expectation, scoring four goals and seven points in 12 games.
He managed to give the middle of the Capitals’ lineup some life for the brief time he spent on their active roster, highlighted by a game against the Montreal Canadiens where he scored a goal on an impressive individual effort and finished with three points.
In March of last season, after the impressive February run he went on, the Capitals re-signed Snively to a two-year $800k AAV contract, which will expire at the end of next season. While he hasn’t made as much of an NHL impact this season (three points in nine games) he’s remained a quality AHL scorer and a reliable depth player. Over the past two AHL campaigns Snively has scored 63 points in 66 games, and has been a first-line winger for the Bears when healthy.
While there isn’t much left for the Capitals to play for this season, they can deal a blow to the playoff hopes of a division rival, the New York Islanders, by winning tonight. Now on their NHL roster, Snively will have a chance to help in the Capitals’ effort to do so.
Washington Capitals Reassign Joe Snively
March 15: Two days later, the Capitals have returned Snively to the AHL. Ovechkin proved he was at full strength last night by taking home the first star and scoring career goal 817.
March 14: The Washington Capitals announced they have recalled Joe Snively from the Hershey Bears. The 5-foot-9 forward has split this season between the Capitals and Bears and looks to be getting another shot at the NHL lineup.
Signed by the Capitals in 2019 following an outstanding college career at Yale, Snively has played eight games with the Capitals this season, scoring one goal and three points. He has become a key contributor for the Bears where he has scored seven goals and 16 points in 20 games this season. The 27-year-old left winger scored 38 points in 35 AHL games in 2021-22 and had seven points in 12 NHL contests that season.
Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports this recall could have something to do with Sonny Milano missing practice yesterday due to an illness. If Milano is unable to play, it appears Snively could slide into the lineup to replace him. Alex Ovechkin also missed practice yesterday but that was just a maintenance day which usually means the player is still ready for game action.
The Capitals face the New York Rangers tonight and though they were sellers at the trade deadline, the Caps are just five points back of the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.
Injury Notes: Ovechkin, Stamkos, Morrissey
Shortly after the announcement that Alex Ovechkin would be a game-time decision for the Washington Capitals tonight, the team confirmed that their captain will be sitting out with a lower-body injury. This will only be the 53rd game that Ovechkin has missed due to injury in his entire career.
The Capitals chose to be sellers at the deadline, but they still sit only a few points back of the Eastern Conference wild-card race. As they looked to pick up a crucial two points against their Metropolitan rival tonight, it will now be even more difficult without their top scorer in the lineup. Replacing Ovechkin in the lineup will be recent callup, Joe Snively. Although Snively has yet to score at a consistent level in the NHL, he has been a very productive forward for the Capitals’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears.
Other notes:
- Similar to Washington, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that their captain will also be sitting out tonight with a lower-body injury. During a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 11th, Steven Stamkos awkwardly collided with Blackhawks forward Joey Anderson, sending him to the dressing room for the remainder of the game. Although he did play Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets, he will not play in tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils, likely to make sure his left leg has fully recovered.
- After sitting out on Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ken Wiebe of Sportsnet reports that Jets’ defenseman Josh Morrissey will not play in tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes as well. In his absence, the Jets will give depth defenseman Kyle Capobianco the nod as he will replace Morrissey in the lineup.
Capitals Notes: Ovechkin, Milano, Snively
In a recent tweet thread from Roman Stubbs of the Washington Post, he shares that Washington captain Alex Ovechkin will be a game-time decision for the team’s game tonight against the New York Rangers. After recording an assist in their most recent win against the New York Islanders, it was noted that Ovechkin did not participate in the team’s practice the next day for ‘maintenance’. Stubbs shares that Ovechkin appears to be dealing with a lower-body issue, and head coach Peter Laviolette will wait to make a decision on the Russian forward.
Other notes:
- Included in the thread, Stubbs mentions that Capitals’ forward Sonny Milano is confirmed to be out of the lineup tonight, as he is dealing with a ‘non-Covid illness’. Replacing Milano in the lineup is young forward Aliaksei Protas. In 43 games so far this season, Protas has provided the Capitals with three goals and seven assists. Although he does not provide the same level of depth scoring as Milano, the Capitals are in a position this year to give a few more games and minutes to their younger players.
- After being recalled this morning on an emergency basis, Stubbs confirms that Joe Snively will play if Ovechkin is unable to. Becoming one of the best players on their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears over the last couple of seasons, Snively may be able to show what he can do at the NHL level against a very good Rangers team.
