Hurricanes Recall Riley Stillman, Assign Yaniv Perets To AHL

The Hurricanes have made a pair of roster moves leading up to Tuesday’s game against Seattle.  The team announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Riley Stillman from AHL Chicago while they returned goaltender Yaniv Perets to the Wolves.

Stillman signed a one-year, two-way deal with Carolina early in free agency back in the summer.  However, the 26-year-old suffered a lower-body injury in training camp that kept him out of the lineup for the first 14 games of the season.  He was waived upon being cleared to return and has gotten into six games with Chicago since then, picking up a pair of assists.

Stillman has 158 career NHL appearances to his name so far between four different organizations.  Over that stretch, he has 26 points, 197 blocks, and 318 hits while averaging a little under 16 minutes a night.  However, he didn’t see any NHL action last season, instead playing exclusively with AHL Rochester where he had six points and 49 penalty minutes in 47 games before being non-tendered by Buffalo in June.

As for Perets, he served as Carolina’s backup in recent days with Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov both banged up.  However, the team is hopeful that Kochetkov can return against the Kraken, allowing him and Spencer Martin to be the tandem.  Perets stopped six of seven shots in relief on Saturday for his first NHL appearance of the season.  He has a 3.67 GAA and a .825 SV% in three games with the Wolves so far this year.

Hurricanes Activate Seth Jarvis, Recall Yaniv Perets, Assign Ty Smith

The Carolina Hurricanes have activated top forward Seth Jarvis from injured reserved. Jarvis missed the last seven games with an upper-body injury. He returned to practice in a no-contact jersey on November 19th. In a corresponding move, Carolina also recalled goaltender Yaniv Perets and assigned defender Ty Smith.

Jarvis will return ahead of a three-game homestand for the Hurricanes, giving a much-needed boost to a Carolina offense that got outscored by New Jersey and Columbus in their last two outings. Jarvis has 11 points through 13 games this season, returning to a pivotal role in the team’s top-six and special teams. He’s coming off a prolific 2023-24 campaign, scoring 33 goals and 67 points despite playing most of the season injured. The 22-year-old has established himself as a pillar of the Carolina lineup, and will now get a chance to get back to point-per-game scoring. His return will likely bump William Carrier or Tyson Jost out of the lineup, with Eric Robinson hanging onto his role with four points in his last four games.

Carolina also bolsters their net with this move, recalling Perets following a scary injury to de facto starter Pyotr Kochetkov. No update on Kochetkov’s prognosis has been given, but Perets’ recall suggests Carolina will deal with at least a few days without their top netminder. They’ll now have to decide between Spencer Martin and Perets for the starting role. Martin has a 1-2-1 record and .870 save percentage through five NHL games this year. Perets hasn’t made his first career NHL start yet, but has stepped into three AHL games – with a .825 save percentage through three games. With both goalies on NHL recalls, the Chicago Wolves are left with Dustin Tokarski and Ruslan Khazheyev in their net.

The Hurricanes will move forward with an improved offense, but tattered goaltending room. They’re 6-3-1 through their last 10 games, outscoring opponents 39-to-28.

Snapshots: Wild, Perets, Edvinsson, Rasmussen

The Minnesota Wild have assigned forwards Liam Ohgren and Michael Milne, and defender Daemon Hunt, to the AHL as they anticipate the return of Jonas Brodin and Joel Eriksson Ek. Michael Russo of The Athletic points out that, even with the two veterans returning, the team will likely call another forward up in the coming days.

Ohgren made his return to the lineup, and Milne his NHL debut, in Saturday’s loss to the Dallas Stars. Neither had much to show for their minutes, with Ohgren recording two shots in 12:10 and Milne recording three hits in 6:34. Another scoreless night pulled Ohgren through his eighth game this season with no points. Hunt hasn’t stepped into the lineup since being recalled on November 12th, though he did play one NHL game in October. All three have been far more productive with the AHL’s Iowa Wild – where Ohgren has four goals in four games; Hunt has two assists in six games; and Milne has eight points in 10 games. Ohgren and Milne will be the top options to be quickly recalled, though Minnesota could also turn towards veteran pros like Ben Jones, Travis Boyd, or Devin Shore.

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have sent goaltender Yaniv Perets back to the minor leagues with Pyotr Kochetkov set to return from injury per NHL.com’s Walt Ruff. Kochetkov missed Carolina’s Saturday win over Ottawa with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour describing Kochetkov as “banged up” to postgame media including NHL.com’s Matt Komma was the closest indication of Kochetkov’s hold up. Whatever the issue was, the young netminder is set to reassume his familiar role as de facto starter with Frederik Andersen out long-term. Kochetkov has eight wins and a .897 save percentage through 10 games this season. Meanwhile, Perets has only served as backup in his NHL call-ups this season. He’s posted a .825 save percentage in three AHL games this year, and will return to a crowded Chicago Wolves goaltender room beside Spencer Martin and Ruslan Khazheyev.
  • Forward Michael Rasmussen (upper-body) and defenseman Simon Edvinsson (lower-body) are both expected to return to the lineup on Monday per the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James. Both players sat out of the team’s Saturday night loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Rasmussen has found a role in Detroit’s bottom-six, recording four points through 16 games this season. Edvinsson has proven far more impactful, usually serving as the go-to partner for star Wings defender Moritz Seider. Edvinsson has six points in 16 games this season, putting him on pace for 30 points in his rookie year.

With Frederik Andersen now out long-term, Carolina’s net belongs to Pyotr Kochetkov for the foreseeable future with Spencer Martin as his backup.  However, Kochetkov is day-to-day himself which meant the Hurricanes needed to call up another netminder.  That move was made with the team announcing that Yaniv Perets has been recalled from AHL Chicago.

The 24-year-old signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent in 2023 following a stellar college career at Quinnipiac, capped off by a 34-4-3 record with a 1.49 GAA, a .931 SV%, and 10 shutouts in 41 games that season.

Last year, with the Hurricanes not having their own AHL affiliate, Perets primarily played with ECHL Norfolk where he put up a 2.99 GAA with a .889 SV% in 34 games while also making one relief appearance with Carolina, making one save in nearly 13 minutes of work.  This season, Perets has played in three games with the Wolves, putting up a 3.67 GAA with a .825 SV%.

The recall was made after 4:00 PM CT which means it won’t count against the salary cap until Saturday.  Even with his addition to the roster, the Hurricanes still have an open spot and can easily create another by moving Andersen to injured reserve.

Hurricanes Notes: Kochetkov, Svechnikov, Perets

While Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov is in concussion protocol, it doesn’t appear if he’ll be out for too long.  Team reporter Walt Ruff relays (Twitter link) that the 24-year-old took part in roughly half of Carolina’s morning skate today with head coach Rod Brind’Amour indicating after that the netminder “looks good and is feeling better”.  Kochetkov has a 2.58 GAA and a .900 SV% this season in 23 games, numbers that don’t look great on their own but are a considerable improvement on what they’ve received from veterans Frederik Andersen (before his blood clots) and Antti Raanta.  There remains no timetable for Kochetkov’s return but the fact he’s on the ice now suggests that

  • Also from Ruff’s note, winger Andrei Svechnikov didn’t participate in practice today as he isn’t feeling 100%. The 23-year-old potted the game-winning goal against Detroit on Friday and logged close to his season average for ice time so it’s unclear if he was banged up during that game or if he’s under the weather.  After missing the start of the season recovering from a knee injury and missing some time with an upper-body issue in December, Svechnikov has been quite productive, collecting 11 goals and 19 assists in 29 games.
  • The team announced that goaltender Yaniv Perets has been assigned to ECHL Norfolk. The move comes as little surprise after Carolina claimed netminder Spencer Martin off waivers from Columbus on Friday.  Perets made his NHL debut during this recall, seeing 13 minutes of action in Monday’s loss to Los Angeles.  Perets has a 2.62 GAA and a .906 SV% in 15 games in the ECHL this season; with Carolina not having an AHL affiliate, he has to drop a level in order to secure regular playing time.

Pyotr Kochetkov In Concussion Protocol; Hurricanes Recall Yaniv Perets

The Hurricanes will be without another goalie for the foreseeable future as the team announced that Pyotr Kochetkov is in concussion protocol, meaning he is out indefinitely.  In a subsequent move, the team announced the recall of Yaniv Perets from ECHL Norfolk.

Kochetkov suffered the concussion in last night’s game against Anaheim, leaving in the second period.  The timing of it certainly isn’t ideal as the 24-year-old was in the midst of a nice run, posting a .924 SV% in his last ten games, giving Carolina some much-needed stability between the pipes.  He joins Frederik Andersen (blood clots) as netminders who are out of the lineup.

This means that veteran Antti Raanta will take over the number one role for the time being.  It has been a rough year for the 34-year-old as his early struggles eventually resulted in him passing through waivers unclaimed last month before being recalled after two AHL games.  Raanta has a 3.27 GAA with a save percentage of just .862 in 17 games this season.

He’ll be joined by Perets, the only recallable option the Hurricanes have.  The 23-year-old is in his first professional season after a stellar college career with Quinnipiac where he had a 1.34 GAA and a .935 SV% over three seasons with them.  This season, he has played exclusively in the ECHL (since Carolina doesn’t have a direct AHL affiliate), posting a 2.62 GAA with a .906 SV% in 15 games.

The Hurricanes have been speculatively linked to a handful of goaltenders in recent weeks but with Kochetkov playing well lately, that speculation had started to cool off.  However, if the young netminder is set to miss extended time, GM Don Waddell may have no choice but to seriously explore what options might be out there.

Hurricanes Recall Antti Raanta

The Hurricanes have recalled veteran Antti Raanta from his short stint in the minors, per PuckPedia. In a corresponding transaction, rookie netminder Yaniv Perets was returned to ECHL Norfolk.

Raanta, 34, cleared waivers last weekend. His .854 SV% was the worst of any goalie with at least five games played this season, and his -9.4 goals saved above expected is eclipsed only by Senators netminder Anton Forsberg (-9.9) and Oilers starter Stuart Skinner (-12.0), per MoneyPuck.

The veteran of 267 NHL games and 11 seasons accepted an assignment to AHL Chicago, which had been the Hurricanes’ primary affiliate since 2020 but severed ties over the summer, now operating independently from any NHL club. He made two starts while in the minors, allowing three goals in each and posting a subpar .875 SV%. The Wolves earned three out of a possible four points with Raanta in the crease, going 1-0-1.

It’s uncertain whether this is a permanent call-up for Raanta or if this is for roster management reasons. Recalls are permitted during the NHL’s holiday roster freeze, and Perets is eligible to be sent down as long as he was informed of the transaction by the end of the day yesterday.

If the Hurricanes plan on returning Raanta to Chicago soon, they can do so without hassle. Since he passed through waivers unclaimed, he can remain on the Hurricanes’ roster for up to 30 days (or play ten games, whichever milestone is hit sooner) until he needs waivers to head to the minors again.

Perets did not appear for the Hurricanes since his recall last weekend, backing up Pyotr Kochetkov in four contests. The 23-year-old is in his first professional season after winning an NCAA Division I national championship with Quinnipiac last season. He has a .916 SV%, one shutout, and a 5-5-1 record in 11 games with Norfolk this season.

After placing netminder Antti Raanta on waivers yesterday, the Carolina Hurricanes have recalled goalie prospect Yaniv Perets from his loan to the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals.

With Raanta on waivers, the Hurricanes had to find a goalie to back up starter Pyotr Kochetkov for tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals. Unlike every other NHL club, the Hurricanes do not currently have an AHL affiliate. As a result, the team’s organizational depth at the goalie position is notably thinner than just about every other franchise.

The Hurricanes only have four goalies under contract: Perets, Raanta, Kochetkov, and the injured Frederik Andersen. That lack of depth isn’t an issue when three of those goalies (the latter trio of names listed) are all performing up to their expected capabilities, but so far this season Andersen has been injured and Raanta has struggled immensely.

That has left the Hurricanes in a rather precarious position in net, as they don’t have a goalie ready and waiting in the AHL to be recalled if necessary. As a result, they’re forced to turn to a goalie playing in the ECHL with just 11 total professional games played under his belt.

That’s not to say Perets, 23, is not a promising netminder. The 23-year-old was a star in college hockey, backstopping Quinnipiac University to a men’s hockey national championship last season. He’s a two-time Hobey Baker award finalist, a two-time second-team All-American, and a two-time ECAC goalie of the year.

The Hurricanes simply need goaltending that will allow them to win games, first and foremost. Perets had no issues winning in college, posting an unbelievable 56-9-5 record in college with a .935 save percentage. He’s also been decently successful in the ECHL with a .916 save percentage to start his career.

Is he likely to be NHL-ready after just 11 professional games? No, that’s probably a stretch. But although the Hurricanes’ affiliate situation has somewhat backed the club into a corner in terms of their goaltending situation, Perets himself is a respectable goalie prospect who very well could become a legitimate NHLer down the line.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Yaniv Perets

The Carolina Hurricanes have added some goaltending depth, announcing that they have signed goaltender Yaniv Perets to a two-year, entry-level contract.  The deal, which begins next season, carries a base salary of $775K along with a signing bonus of $60K per year.  GM Don Waddell released the following statement about his newest prospect:

Yaniv was a crucial part of Quinnipiac’s run to the national championship this season, and he has been an elite goaltender for his entire collegiate career. He is a proven winner, and we look forward to seeing him develop in the crease.

Perets, 23, led the Quinnipiac University Bobcats to their first NCAA men’s ice hockey championship last weekend. He was named to the NCAA East Second All-American Team and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award the past two seasons.

Born in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Québec, Perets posted a .931 save percentage and 1.49 goals-against average in a career-high 41 games with the Bobcats this season, including a .948 save percentage in the four tournament games, only allowing five goals.

The Hurricanes’ interest in Perets should have come as no surprise, given the connection between the netminder and the Brind’Amour family. For three seasons at Quinnipiac, Perets was teammates with Skyler Brind’Amour, a soon-to-be free agent and the son of Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Given Perets’ strong performance the past two seasons as the Bobcats’ starter, he undoubtedly received multiple offers. He gives the organization a second legitimate goalie prospect behind the 23-year-old Pyotr Kochetkov.

While an intriguing prospect, Perets’ ceiling is disputable, given his age and development path. His development path before NCAA play mirrors Buffalo Sabres star prospect Devon Levi, but Perets is over a year older and played behind a better defensive unit in Quinnipiac. Regardless, it’s a no-risk acquisition for the Hurricanes if they can make it work.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first reported that the Hurricanes were the frontrunners to sign Perets.
