Oilers’ Derek Ryan Clears Waivers

January 20, 2025 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 1 Comment

Jan. 20: Ryan has cleared waivers and can be assigned to Bakersfield at will, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports Monday. That reassignment will pave the way for newly-signed defenseman John Klingberg to come off injured reserve when he’s ready to make his season debut.

Jan. 19: The Edmonton Oilers needed to make a few roster moves to stay cap-compliant thanks to newly-signed defenseman John Klingberg’s contract hitting the books today. According to a team announcement, the Oilers organization has placed depth forward Derek Ryan on waivers for reassignment to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, and have additionally reassigned defenseman Josh Brown.

It’s an unfortunate transaction for Ryan as he’s entered the twilight years of his NHL career. Ryan made his way to the NHL at the age of 29 during the 2015-16 season after an impressive run through European leagues, showcasing one of the more underrated stories of the last decade. After a brief three-year run with the Carolina Hurricanes, Ryan has been a key depth forward in Alberta since the 2018-19 season with the Calgary Flames and the Oilers.

His offensive production has decreased steadily throughout the years, similarly to his average time on ice. Ryan neared the 40-point plateau in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons before hovering around the 20-point total from 2021 to 2023 in Edmonton. Last year saw his biggest decrease in scoring over a full season, with Ryan only scoring five goals and 12 points in 70 games. His only true value anymore is his role in the faceoff dot, as Ryan has averaged a 55.2% success rate over 5,072 career draws, which is even more impressive considering 53.3% of his shift starts have been in the defensive zone.

Joining Ryan on the road to AHL Bakersfield is Brown, albeit unencumbered by the waiver wire. He’s primarily served as organizational depth on the blue line for the Oilers this year on a relatively expensive price tag of $1MM for the next three years. He’s tallied one assist in eight games in Edmonton this season averaging 11:29 of ice time per game.

Edmonton Oilers Recall Josh Brown

January 4, 2025 at 5:15 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Oilers are adding some extra depth on the back end to their roster as they begin a four-game road trip tonight in Seattle.  The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Josh Brown from AHL Bakersfield.

The 30-year-old is in his first season with Edmonton after signing a three-year, $3MM contract that hasn’t gone quite as intended thus far.  Originally viewed as a sixth or seventh defender at the time he signed, Brown wound up not making the team out of training camp and cleared waivers back in early October.

Since then, he has been recalled three times but his playing time has been quite limited.  Brown has suited up in just three games, all coming over a four-day stretch in November.  He didn’t record a point while adding five blocked shots and six hits in a little over 12 minutes a night of playing time.  Considering Edmonton has six healthy blueliners at the moment, he might not be adding to his limited totals while up with the big club.

Brown has played in 20 games with the Condors this season, his first taste of action in the minors since the 2018-19 campaign when he was with Springfield.  He has just three assists in those outings while also recording 52 penalty minutes.

Edmonton had two open roster spots so no corresponding moves needed to be made to bring Brown up and with Evander Kane being their only injured player (and not close to returning), there won’t be any pending moves that could force him off the roster in the near future.

Minor Transactions: 12/13/24

December 13, 2024 at 7:57 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

There have been plenty of minor moves around the hockey world today.  We’ll run down the ones with NHL connections here.

  • The Oilers announced (Twitter link) that defenseman Josh Brown has been recalled from AHL Bakersfield. The 30-year-old inked a three-year, $3MM deal with Edmonton over the summer but wound up clearing waivers and has spent most of the year with the Condors, picking up three assists and 50 penalty minutes in 16 games while playing just three times with Edmonton so far.  With Alec Regula not with the team yet, it’s possible that Brown’s promotion is merely a short-term one.
  • The Rangers have brought up some extra defensive depth in the absence of K’Andre Miller. The team announced (Twitter link) that veteran Chad Ruhwedel has been recalled from AHL Hartford.  Ruhwedel has only played once with New York this season but has recorded three assists in 11 games with the Wolf Pack.  The 34-year-old has 365 career NHL contests under his belt over parts of 13 seasons.
  • The Canucks continue their frequent roster shuffling, announcing (Twitter link) that forwards Aatu Raty, Max Sasson, and defenseman Mark Friedman were assigned to AHL Abbotsford. Sasson has been moved back and forth quite often over the last few weeks while Friedman was papered down earlier this week.  Raty’s last assignment was in mid-November and considering he already has 20 games with Vancouver under his belt, it’s safe to say he’ll be back up quickly as well.
  • Veteran forward Gemel Smith has caught on with another team as he has joined AHL Bridgeport on a PTO, per a team release. The 30-year-old played in seven games with Syracuse earlier in the season, picking up four points.  Smith has 25 career points at the NHL level spanning 91 games over parts of six seasons.

Minor Transactions: 11/25/24

November 25, 2024 at 6:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

There have been quite a few paper transactions made across the NHL today as teams continue to try to save every little bit of cap room they can.  Here’s a rundown of today’s moves, per the AHL’s transactions log.

  • The Oilers have reassigned defenseman Josh Brown and forward Drake Caggiula to AHL Bakersfield. Brown has been shuffled back and forth in recent days while Caggiula was recalled back on Thursday.  Edmonton is off until Friday and the moves allow them to dip out of using LTIR and bank a small amount of cap space for the next few days.  At least one of them, if not both, will likely be recalled later in the week.
  • A day after being papered down, the Bruins have recalled forward Marc McLaughlin and defenseman Jordan Oesterle from AHL Providence. McLaughlin hasn’t played for Boston yet this season while Oesterle suited up three times earlier this month.
  • The Hurricanes have recalled winger Jackson Blake and goaltender Spencer Martin from their latest paper loan to AHL Chicago. Both players have been shuffled back and forth routinely in cap-saving moves.
  • A day after the Devils loaned wingers Shane Bowers and Nolan Foote along with defenseman Nick DeSimone to AHL Utica, the trio was recalled today. Sunday’s demotions allowed them to clear LTIR for the day but they are back to using it for the time being now.
  • After being papered down on Sunday, the Golden Knights have recalled wingers Mason Morelli and Callahan Burke, who scored his first NHL goal on Saturday in a win over Montreal. They also brought back blueliner Robert Hagg who was both recalled (on an emergency basis) and sent down on Saturday.  Hagg’s recall moves Vegas back into using LTIR for now.

Oilers Place Viktor Arvidsson On Injured Reserve

November 21, 2024 at 3:19 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Oilers placed winger Viktor Arvidsson on IR today, per a team announcement. The placement is retroactive to Nov. 12, so he can be activated at any time. Defenseman Josh Brown was recalled in a corresponding transaction after being sent down to AHL Bakersfield last night.

Arvidsson, 31, has already missed four games with an undisclosed injury and will miss a fifth tonight when Edmonton hosts the Wild. After signing a two-year, $8MM contract in free agency, the 5’9″ Swede has been limited to two goals and three assists for five points in 16 games despite spending most of his time on Leon Draisaitl’s wing.

It’s certainly not the level of production the Oilers expected out of Arvidsson, who had been an effective top-nine piece for the Kings over the past few seasons. Back surgery and a lower-body injury limited him to 18 appearances last season, but he still managed to record six goals and nine assists for 15 points. He was coming off a 26-goal, 59-point campaign the year prior, just two points short of his career-high set with the Predators in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 campaigns.

He’s not the only top-six forward that Edmonton will be down tonight. Zach Hyman will miss the next four to seven days with the undisclosed injury he sustained against the Senators on Tuesday, head coach Kris Knoblauch told Mark Spector of Sportsnet. Neither Arvidsson nor Hyman will return for Saturday’s game against the Rangers, but both could be options when Edmonton returns to action against Utah after Thanksgiving.

As for Brown’s recall, it’s uncertain if he’ll play after suiting up as a seventh defenseman in each of their last two games. The Oilers now have 12 forwards available on the active roster after recalling Drake Caggiula earlier Thursday, and Kasperi Kapanen has joined the team after being claimed off waivers from the Blues earlier in the week.

Brown logged 7 PIMs and averaged 11:29 per game across Edmonton’s back-to-back earlier this week, his first NHL appearance since inking a three-year, $3MM contract over the summer. The 30-year-old landed on waivers before the season started and has spent most of his time in Bakersfield, where he has two assists and a +5 rating in 12 games.

Oilers Send Josh Brown Back To AHL

November 20, 2024 at 8:56 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly reassigned defenceman Josh Brown back to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (as per Puck Pedia). The team has confirmed the assignment.

The move comes after the team claimed forward Kasperi Kapanen off waivers yesterday, it was necessary to move Brown off the roster to get back under the salary cap. With Brown now in Bakersfield, Edmonton has just $304K in projected cap space, which would translate to just $1.4MM at the NHL trade deadline, assuming that they don’t make any other roster moves.

Brown was called up on Sunday in the wake of the Darnell Nurse injury and dressed in two games averaging 11:29 in ice time with 7 PIM, three hits and four blocked shots. Brown also had a fight with Zack MacEwen of the Ottawa Senators.

The reassignment for Brown could mean that one of Nurse, Viktor Arvidsson or Zach Hyman is healthy enough to dress tomorrow night against the Minnesota Wild, however, the team still have six defensemen on the roster regardless of whether they get another player back.

Brown has already cleared waivers earlier this year, so he does not require waivers to be sent back down. He was signed to a three-year $3MM contract in the summer and has been collecting an NHL paycheck in the minors. In 12 AHL games with the Condors, Brown has two assists and a +5 rating.

Oilers Recall Josh Brown

November 17, 2024 at 5:59 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Oilers recalled defenseman Josh Brown from AHL Bakersfield on Sunday, according to a team announcement. The club had a pair of open roster spots and ample cap space in their LTIR pool, so no corresponding transaction was necessary.

Recalling Brown gives Edmonton an extra defenseman while Darnell Nurse, who sustained an upper-body injury on a hit from Maple Leafs winger Ryan Reaves on Saturday night that resulted in a five-game suspension, is unavailable. The Oilers haven’t yet issued a timeline for Nurse’s return, but after leaving the game bloodied and in visible pain, it’s likely he’ll miss at least a game or two.

Edmonton signed Brown, 30, to a three-year, $3MM contract over the summer. It hasn’t gone to plan at all, with the 6’5″ righty failing to even make the team out of camp and clearing waivers last month.

Brown’s $1MM cap hit is fully buriable in the minors, but it’s a big chunk of change to be paying an AHLer. The Ontario native hadn’t seen AHL ice since the 2018-19 campaign with the Panthers, the same season he made his NHL debut.

A Florida sixth-round pick in 2013, Brown has recorded 11 goals, 23 assists, 34 points, and a -26 rating in 290 NHL appearances over the past six years with the Panthers, Senators, Bruins, and Coyotes before arriving with the Oilers. He averages less than 15 minutes per game and has consistently posted below-average possession numbers, only controlling 43.8% of shot attempts when on the ice at even strength.

Last year in Arizona, Brown was a frequent healthy scratch but managed a career-high seven assists and 10 points in 51 games when in the lineup. The physical stay-at-home defender did finish fourth on the Coyotes with 85 blocks and sixth with 112 hits, but his 41.0 CF% at even strength was the worst among any Arizona skater with over 20 games played.

In 12 games with Bakersfield, Brown has two assists and leads the team with 46 PIMs and a +5 rating. The former number leads the league, not an unsurprising stat for a player who logged 1.47 PIMs per game with Arizona in 2023-24.

It’s unclear whether Brown will make his Oilers debut on Monday against the Canadiens. That depends on the health of winger Viktor Arvidsson, who’s missed their last two games with an undisclosed injury and has led them to dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen. If Arvidsson can’t play, Brown will likely suit up as the extra blue-liner.

Brown can remain on the Oilers’ roster for up to 30 days or play up to 10 games before requiring waivers again to return to Bakersfield.

Edmonton Oilers Place Four Players On Waivers

October 6, 2024 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 4 Comments

The defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers are placing four players on waivers as they put the finishing touches on their 2024-25 opening night roster. The organization announced it had placed forwards Drake Caggiula and Raphael Lavoie, defenseman Josh Brown, and goaltender Olivier Rodrigue on waivers.

Caggiula and Brown are depth players with an outside chance of making the roster in specific roles. Neither player was expected to play meaningful minutes for the Oilers this season but will now start the season with their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, assuming both clear waivers tomorrow.

The demotion of Brown will give Edmonton some cap relief, as well. The organization signed Brown to a three-year, $3MM contract on the opening day of free agency this past summer and the Oilers can now entirely remove that cap hit since his salary falls below the $1.25MM threshold.

Placing Lavoie on waivers to start the season may be a bold call by Edmonton’s brass. The team drafted Lavoie with the 38th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft and he’s coming off back-to-back quality campaigns with the Condors. He’s proven to be a quality scorer at the AHL level with 53 goals and 95 points in 127 games since the start of the 2022-23 AHL season.

Lavoie appeared to be an NHL-caliber scorer the Oilers could plug into their bottom-six to start the year and there’s a legitimate chance he’ll be on another team’s roster by tomorrow afternoon. If not, he will start the year in Bakersfield and should serve as an immediate call-up should the Oilers find themselves in injury trouble early.

Rodrigue struggled early upon his start with the Condors during the 2020-21 AHL season but has grown his prospect quality since. He finished last season with a 19-12-5 record in Bakersfield with a .916 SV% and 2.73 GAA. His demotion is mostly circumstantial as Edmonton doesn’t have the financial flexibility to carry three netminders during the season. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard will start the year as the team’s tandem.

Oilers Re-Sign Corey Perry; Sign Brown, Delia, Carrick

July 1, 2024 at 2:25 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

2:25 p.m.: The Oilers have also re-signed right winger Corey Perry to a one-year, $1.4MM contract, per a team announcement. He returns to Edmonton for his 20th NHL season in 2024-25. It’ll carry a $1.15MM cap hit with up to $250K in performance bonuses, TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports. His return fills out a lot of good work from acting GM Jeff Jackson today to fill out their depth scoring complement after he ended the season with eight goals and 13 points in 38 games in an Oilers uniform.

12:42 p.m.: The Oilers are bringing in depth defenseman Josh Brown on a three-year deal with a $1MM cap hit, per a team announcement. They’ve also signed depth netminder Collin Delia to a one-year, two-way deal worth $775K NHL/$400K AHL with $425K guaranteed, per PuckPedia. Lastly, the team announced a one-year, two-way contract for defenseman Connor Carrick which will pay him $775K at the NHL level.

Brown, 30, is a bit of a blemish on an otherwise solid day for the Oilers thus far. Strictly a shutdown and PK specialist, he’s posted some downright abysmal possession numbers over the past two seasons in a Coyotes uniform, only controlling 39.7% of expected goals when on the ice at even strength. He does carry some special teams value, but even with receiving considerable time shorthanded, his low average ice time (14:45 last season) evidences how sparingly he’s used at even strength.

What he does bring to the Edmonton blue line is six years and nearly 300 games of NHL experience coupled with his 6’5″, 220-lb frame. He’s laid over 100 hits in each of the past three seasons, a mark he could look to hit if he gets into about half of Edmonton’s games this season. For a seven-figure cap hit, that’s a likely possibility, although it can also be fully buried in the minors if the Oilers need to.

Brown is coming off a career-high 10 points in 51 games with Arizona last year. He’s also logged NHL time for the Bruins, Panthers and Senators.

Delia, 30, joins the organization as Jack Campbell’s replacement and projects to serve as the starter for AHL Bakersfield next season. He struggled in 32 appearances for the Jets’ minor league affiliate in 2023-24, the Manitoba Moose, posting a .872 SV% and an 11-9-1 record. His last NHL action came with the Canucks in 2022-23, when he had a .882 SV% and 3.28 GAA in 20 appearances.

Carrick also likely enters the fray as AHL depth, especially with Brown’s signing. While he was once a fringe NHL regular with the Maple Leafs in the late 2010s, he’s been solely a minor-league option for the past few years. The 30-year-old spent last year with the Kraken’s AHL affiliate in Coachella Valley, putting up 34 points and a +12 rating in 70 games. He’s appeared in 242 NHL games over eight different seasons with the Leafs, Devils, Capitals, Stars and Bruins, recording 13 goals and 50 points with a -19 rating.
