Artem Anisimov Signs AHL PTO; Wade Allison Moved To IR

It appeared as though Artem Anisimov had the inside track for a roster spot with the Philadelphia Flyers as training camp progressed, but the veteran forward suffered a broken foot while blocking a shot and ultimately didn’t earn a contract. Now, after recovering, Anisimov will try again. The Lehigh Valley Phantoms have signed him to an AHL professional tryout to see what he can do.

Now 34, Anisimov spent last season playing in the KHL after a long NHL career. In 27 games with Lokomotiv, he racked up 19 points, but decided he still had more to give on the North American rink. A history with John Tortorella and tons of experience made him a good bet to earn a deal before the injury and he’ll now get a chance to ramp up to NHL speed in the minor leagues. Once there, the Flyers will have to make a decision on whether they want to sign him to a contract or use other internal options to fill out the lineup.

Given how many injuries the team is dealing with, it seems a good bet that Anisimov will succeed in his return. The team moved Wade Allison to injured reserve with an oblique muscle strain and hip pointer, telling reporters including Giana Han of the Philadelphia Inquirer that he’ll miss three weeks. He joins Sean Couturier, James van Riemsdyk, Ryan Ellis, Bobby Brink, and Patrick Brown on injured reserve (though the latter is on a conditioning stint and nearing a return).

If Anisimov does earn a deal, he’ll have a chance to reach the 800-game mark in the NHL, along with some other milestones. He currently sits at 180 goals, and 196 assists for 376 points in 771 career games.

As the Philadelphia Flyers look for building blocks for the future, one name that has seemed to be part of the answer is forward Wade Allison, who won a spot on head coach John Tortorella’s squad out of training camp. Unfortunately for the Flyers and Allison, the 25-year-old suffered what appeared to be a painful injury in Saturday’s loss to the Ottawa Senators. After throwing a hit on Ottawa’s Jacob Bernard-Docker, Allison fell to the ice and needed assistance getting off the ice and did not return to the game.

No update had been made available heading into this afternoon’s matchup with the Dallas Stars, the only clue Allison wasn’t playing being that he didn’t take warmups. However, The Athletic’s Charlie O’Connor was able to provide an update part-way through the game. According to O’Connor, the injury doesn’t look to be incredibly serious and the initial prognosis is that the forward will not have to miss too much time, though things are subject to change. That update is surely positive news for Allison, as he looks to make him imprint on this next generation of Flyers.

  • Jonathan Huberdeau, who has missed the last three games with a lower-body injury, skated with the Calgary Flames this morning, reports Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg. The nature of the injury had been a bit unclear, however Steinberg adds that Huberdeau said he had blocked a shot during Monday’s loss to the New York Islanders, causing his foot to swell up. The winger added that the foot is fine now and he plans to start wearing shot blockers on his feet going forward. Even though Huberdeau’s early performance this season has been underwhelming, Calgary will need him to produce if they want to get back on track themselves, and that won’t be able to happen until the superstar rejoins the lineup. Right now, the Flames are preparing to host the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night, but there’s still no official confirmation on Huberdeau’s return, though Huberdeau himself appears confident he’ll be playing, per his media availability. After tomorrow, Calgary departs for a six-game road trip which begins Thursday.
  • According to head coach Gerard Gallant, New York Rangers forward Vitali Kravtsov, who missed yesterday’s game at the Nashville Predators with an illness, will be out of the lineup tonight at home against the Arizona Coyotes too, as relayed by Arthur Staple of The Athletic. Vince Mercogliano of USA Today Sports adds that Kravtsov not only has the flu, but a dental issue as well, which necessitated a trip to the dentist this morning.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Wade Allison, Linus Hogberg

The Philadelphia Flyers have finalized contracts with two of their restricted free agents, per a team announcement. The Flyers have signed winger Wade Allison to a two-year deal with a $785K AAV, and defenseman Linus Hogberg to a one-year, two-way $750K deal. Allison’s deal is a two-way deal next season and a one-way deal in 2023-24. These two deals leave Hayden Hodgson as their final RFA left to sign.

Allison, who will be 25 this upcoming season, was one of three Flyers second-round picks at the 2016 NHL draft, being selected by Philadelphia in that round alongside teammate Carter Hart and current ECHLer Pascal Laberge. Allison took a bit of a long route to the NHL, playing a four-year collegiate career at Western Michigan University before turning pro during the 2020-21 season. Last year Allison saw the most game action with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, scoring 17 points in 28 games.

Allison has struggled to stay healthy so far in his pro career, but when he’s played he’s shown promise. He plays a powerful game and has shown goal-scoring ability at every level he’s played at. On a Flyers team in desperate need of young players who can step up and become meaningful NHLers, Allison’s new deal gives him a chance to become a fixture in Philadelphia.

Hogberg, 23, was a fifth-rounder at the 2015 entry draft. Hogberg was an everyday defenseman in the SHL for the Vaxjo Lakers from 2016-2020, and came to North America to play with AHL Lehigh Valley in 2020-21. Hogberg made his NHL debut last season, skating in five games for the Flyers, and getting just over 17 minutes a night.

Hogberg’s eight points in 58 AHL games last season indicate that he’s not much of a scorer, but with this one-year deal he’ll have a chance to prove he can take the next step in his game and become an NHL option for the Flyers and new coach John Tortorella.

Philadelphia Flyers Announce Several Roster Moves

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced several moves, including one that you don’t see very often. Carter Hart will be out for this afternoon’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes with an eye infection. His status is unclear moving forward, though there is hope that it doesn’t keep him out long. To fill the spot, Kirill Ustimenko has been recalled under emergency conditions. Meanwhile, Rasmus Ristolainen and Patrick Brown have both been activated from injured reserve, while Wade Allison has moved to IR to make room.

Among those moves, Ristolainen’s return may be the biggest. The veteran defenseman is a pending unrestricted free agent and could potentially be a prime target at the trade deadline. His health will likely determine how many teams are interested though, so getting him back into the lineup can only help the Flyers. Ristolainen hasn’t played since February 9 against the Detroit Red Wings where he logged nearly 24 minutes of ice time.

Overall, he’s averaging more than 21 minutes this season, his first in Philadelphia. The Flyers suggested earlier this season that they hoped to sign Ristolainen to an extension, though with the way the year has gone so far it’s hard to argue that a trade wouldn’t be more productive. Notorious for his poor plus-minus record, despite that statistic not inspiring much faith, Ristolainen is once again in the negative at -12 on the year. He’s been on the ice for 46 goals against at even strength, worse than all but 28 other defensemen in the league.

Still, the mix of size, skating ability, and offensive upside that the 27-year-old brings (along with the fact that he’s right-handed) will make him an interesting player to watch as the deadline approaches.

According to CapFriendly, the Pittsburgh Penguins placed forward Jason Zucker back on long-term injured reserve after returning from injury for just one game. He played last Monday against the Vegas Golden Knights, so the team placed him retroactive to January 17th. He’ll now have to miss another 10 games and 24 days, of which he’s already missed two and five, respectively. Zucker had been on LTIR for almost a month already after suffering a lower-body injury. He is once again week-to-week. Zucker is again struggling during his second full season in Pittsburgh, posting just 13 points in 31 games.

  • Philadelphia Flyers forward Wade Allison suffered an MCL sprain during yesterday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, per head coach Mike Yeo. Allison, one of Philadelphia’s better forward prospects, had already suffered an ACL tear that kept him out at the beginning of the 2020-21 season. Yeo notes, that he believes this MCL injury is on a different knee. It was Allison’s first game of the season for the Flyers after posting four points in seven games with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He’s listed as week-to-week.
  • Dallas Stars head coach Rick Bowness says forward Michael Raffl is out between 10 days and two weeks with a lower-body injury. Raffl’s seen a lot of ice time this year, his first in Dallas, in a checking role alongside Radek Faksa and Luke Glendening, posting nine points in 37 games. Dallas will need to call up a forward to replace him, likely Rhett Gardner or Riley Tufte.
  • Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dylan DeMelo sustained an upper-body injury during yesterday’s loss against Boston, per team play-by-play man Dennis Beyak. DeMelo has just four points through 36 games but has still been above the norm defensively. There’s no current timeline for his return.

The start of training camps usually results in a fairly long list of injuries as teams are extra cautious with their players early on.  Not surprisingly, this is the case once again this season.  Here’s a rundown of some of the recent injury news around the league:

  • Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov hasn’t skated yet in training camp due to an undisclosed injury, relays Arthur Staple of The Athletic (Twitter link). The veteran is expected to split starts with Ilya Sorokin this season but there is no timetable for when he’ll be able to hit the ice.
  • Earlier this week, the Flyers announced several injuries including one for winger Wade Allison and he was ruled out for the start of the season. It appears as if he’ll be out considerably longer than that as Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic reports (subscription link) that the high-ankle sprain is believed to be quite serious and that it could be months before he was able to return.  The 23-year-old had four goals and three assists in 14 games with Philadelphia last season – his first NHL action – and looked to be a candidate to push for a regular spot in training camp.  Now it appears that it’ll be a while before he gets that next opportunity.
  • Maple Leafs goalie prospect Ian Scott suffered a groin injury early in the third period in Saturday’s victory over Montreal, notes TSN’s Kristen Shilton (Twitter link). He had hip surgery two years ago and while he’s in the third and final year of his entry-level contract, Scott has played in just seven career professional contests.  Head coach Sheldon Keefe indicated that the netminder is expected to miss some time.
  • Hurricanes winger prospect Seth Jarvis is day-to-day with a tweak, head coach Rod Brind’Amour told Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal. The 19-year-old had 11 points in nine games with AHL Chicago and 27 more in 24 contests with WHL Portland last season and has a legitimate chance to break camp with the big club.  If that doesn’t happen, he will have to return to the junior level.
