Morning Notes: Robertson, Pinto, Varone

In this early stretch of the 2025-26 NHL season, one of the better storylines on the New York Rangers has been the emergence of rookie defenseman Matthew Robertson, who scored his first NHL goal last night in the team’s much-needed comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Robertson took on injured defenseman Carson Soucy’s role as the Rangers’ number-five defenseman, and while he hasn’t been perfect, he has generally impressed. This has led to questions as to what will happen when Soucy is ready to return to the lineup, and The Athletic’s Peter Baugh wrote yesterday that it “definitely feels like” Robertson will retain a spot in head coach Mike Sullivan’s regular lineup once Soucy returns.

Should Robertson end up retaining his regular lineup spot, that would likely mean veteran Urho Vaakanainen would become the team’s seventh defenseman, filling the role Robertson began the season in. Vaakanainen, 26, is averaging the fewest minutes per game of any Rangers blueliner (15:02) though he has played in all seven of the team’s games thus far this season. The stay-at-home defenseman has an additional year on his contract beyond this one at a $1.55MM AAV, and managed a healthy 15 points in 46 games for the Rangers last season. Vaakanainen’s play has drawn more criticism than Robertson’s this year, though, and being on the wrong end of a Trent Frederic game-winning goal on Tuesday didn’t help his case to stay in the lineup.

Other notes from around the hockey world:

  • Yesterday, we covered reports coming out of Ottawa that Senators center Shane Pinto and the team were set to re-engage in talks over a contract extension for the talented young center. Those reports indicated that there was a notable gap between the Senators’ expectations for a new contract and the expectations of Pinto’s representatives, led by Lewis Gross of Sports Professional Management. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman added to the reporting around Pinto last night, revealing that the Senators had offered Pinto an eight-year contract extension. It’s unclear at this time whether Pinto and the Senators will be able to reach an agreement on such a long-term contract (Pinto’s goal-scoring success so far this season should certainly embolden his camp’s pursuit of a major pay raise) but as of right now, it’s abundantly clear the Senators are hoping to keep Pinto in the fold for as long as possible.
  • Former AHL MVP Phil Varone has found a place to play the 2025-26 season, signing a contract with Slovakia’s HK Dukla Trencin. The 34-year-old, who was once one of the top players in the AHL and has 97 career NHL games to his name, has landed in Slovakia after a two-year stint in Germany’s DEL. Since leaving North America at the end of a 2019-20 season that saw him post 19 points in 33 AHL games, Varone has struggled to find consistency in Europe. He’s bounced between six different clubs over the last five years across three different leagues and four different countries, with his best year coming in 2023-24, when he scored 27 points in 34 games for the DEL’s Düsseldorfer EG. He now joins a Trencin team in desperate need of scoring reinforcement: the team currently sit in the No. 8 spot in the Slovak Extraliga standings (out of 12 teams) and have scored the third-fewest goals as a team (27 through 12 games played).

Metropolitan Notes: Devils, Capitals, Rangers

The New Jersey Devils have announced that Evgenii Dadonov has been placed on injured reserve, and in a corresponding move, they have recalled Brian Halonen from AHL Utica. 

Given Dadonov’s fractured hand, there was some speculation earlier today as to what the Devils would do. Rather than turn to a younger prospect, New Jersey has called upon Halonen, 26. Undrafted out of Michigan Tech University, Halonen has spent the past four seasons with the Utica Comets, including a 27-goal breakout last year. His efforts have led to two brief call-ups in the past, two games apiece in the last two years, where the Minnesota native has not yet recorded a point. 

In place of Dadonov, the team could turn to fellow Russian Arseny Gritsyuk for a larger role, having already impressed as a 24-year-old rookie out of the KHL, with two assists in as many games. Meanwhile, Halonen will provide depth and hope to slot into the team’s bottom six. Dadonov, 36, was brought in last summer on a one year, $1MM deal, however, he has been a steady offensive presence in 617 NHL games, and was a candidate to outperform the contract. The injury in his Devils’ debut is undoubtedly a set-back, but unfortunately New Jersey is no stranger to such adversity, especially after last season. 

Elsewhere across the Metropolitan Division:

  • Chris Cerullo of Russian Machine Never Breaks outlined an interesting draft story from Washington last June. As seen in a behind-the-scenes video posted by the team, the Capitals aggressively tried to move up ten spots or more to select Lynden Lakovic, the talented Moose Jaw Warriors winger. Such efforts proved futile, however, the Caps’ brass watched on the edge of their seats as Lakovic remained on the board. Finally, after Nashville selected Ryker Lee at 26, Washington jumped to snag the 6’4” forward. Lakovic remains in the WHL this season, but forecasts as a big part of the Capitals’ future, as another forward with imposing size. As time goes on, it will be fascinating to see how Lakovic, along with each forward taken before him, pans out; especially given the hypotheticals. As also mentioned in the article, the Capitals were thrilled again when Milton Gastrin, their second-round selection, also fell into their laps.
  • Rangers Head Coach Mike Sullivan told Colin Stephenson of Newsday Sports that Jonathan Quick will handle starting duty for the Blueshirts tonight as they host the Capitals. The news is not surprising, given Igor Shesterkin’s usage last night in Pittsburgh. However, it will be interesting to see how much the 39-year-old Quick is deployed this season, and what he still has to offer. Stephenson also mentioned that young defenseman Matthew Robertson will slot into the lineup for Carson Soucy, who was placed on IR earlier today. 

Rangers Sign Matthew Robertson To Two-Year Extension

The New York Rangers have signed defenseman Matthew Robertson to a two-year contract extension. The deal will carry two-way status in year one, and one-way status in year two. Both years will have a league-minimum, $775K cap hit at the NHL level.

This move is a tidy piece of business, and checks one of the 14 pending restricted-free agents off of New York’s to-do list. Robertson spent the majority of last season with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. He graduated into a top-end role with the club as the year went on, and finished the season with a defense-leading 25 points in 60 games played. Interestingly, only one of those points was a goal – scored just four games into the season in a comeback win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Robertson went on to lean into a defense-first role, and earned the first two games of his NHL career in New York’s final two games of the regular season.

Robertson’s NHL debuts didn’t come with any scoring, but nonetheless stood as two promising performances. He posted a plus-three across the two matchups, and earned 20 minutes of icetime in the latter of the two: a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Robertson looked capable of handling NHL tempo and speed, using his full-size frame and lengthy reach to control opponents into the boards and knock the puck loose. Those will be the traits that headline his game, and potentially earn him NHL reps, as soon as the start of next season.

Rangers Recall Matthew Robertson

The New York Rangers have recalled defenseman Matthew Robertson, per a team release. The 24-year-old is expected to make his NHL debut as Braden Schneider will sit out the final two games of the season with an upper-body injury, adds Mollie Walker of the New York Post.

The team’s second round selection in the 2019 draft, Robertson has spent the last four seasons in the AHL. In 60 games for the Hartford Wolfpack this season, Robertson has put up one goal, 25 points and 55 penalty minutes. Throughout his time in the AHL, the 6’4, 200-pound defender has put up 80 points and 176 penalty minutes in 250 games. Prior to that, Robertson spent five seasons in the WHL with the Edmonton Oil Kings, where he put up solid numbers for a defender. In 208 WHL games, Robertson posted 127 points, which included averaging a point-per-game in his final season.

While he was a highly regarded prospect, the left-handed Robertson hasn’t been able to crack the NHL lineup since being drafted. Although he’ll be making his first appearance with the Rangers, he is set for restricted free agency following the season. With this said, Robertson still ranks toward the top of the franchise’s defensive prospects list, so it stands to reason the Rangers will look to bring Robertson back into the fold.

Robertson may also have a clearer path to playing in New York next season, as K’Andre Miller is also set to be a restricted free agent and is a due a raise on his current $3,872,000MM AAV. Zachary Jones is also set for restricted free agency. Calvin de Haan, who the team acquired earlier this year in a trade with the Avalanche, is set to become a free agent after the season and recently had choice words for how he feels he’s been treated by the team. So, it’s safe to say de Haan will be looking a role elsewhere starting this summer.

Minor Transactions: 3/6/25

With less than 24 hours remaining until the trade deadline, a few teams are making minor roster moves for several reasons. Whether to accrue a few cap dollars before tomorrow’s deadline or to ensure certain players are eligible for the Calder Cup playoffs, there will be plenty of movement between the NHL and AHL before tomorrow afternoon.

  • According to the AHL transactions page, the Chicago Blackhawks have reassigned forward Andreas Athanasiou to their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. Despite a disappointing season, the IceHogs are competing for a playoff spot in the AHL’s Central Division and would qualify if the season ended today. Athanasiou has been a large part of that hunt. Since clearing waivers and being reassigned in early November, Athanasiou has scored eight goals and 16 points in 16 games with AHL Rockford. Should they qualify by season’s end, he’ll be an important part of their playoff success.
  • In a move similar to the Blackhawks, the Calgary Flames announced that they have reassigned defenseman Ilya Solovyov to their AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers. The Mogilev, Belarus native has again spent much of the time in the AHL this season, scoring six goals and 21 points in 43 contests. His point production is good for fourth on the team among defensemen, and his +16 rating is the second-best. 
  • The San Jose Sharks are expected to make a minor roster move, although it won’t involve their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. According to Curtis Pashelka of the East Bay Times, the Sharks are expected to activate Nikolai Kovalenko from the injured reserve ahead of tonight’s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche. It’ll be the second time Kovalenko has played his former team since being traded in early December. He’s been limited to 17 games in San Jose due to a pair of injuries but has scored one goal and eight points when healthy.
  • According to a team announcement, the New York Rangers have reassigned defenseman Matthew Robertson to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The team has also recalled Chad Ruhwedel in a corresponding roster move. Despite being recalled a few times this season, Robertson has yet to debut in the NHL. It’s prudent for the Rangers organization to make Robertson eligible for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs if he has no avenue to time in the NHL. The former 49th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft has scored one goal and 18 points in 47 AHL contests this season. Ruhwedel will reprise a familiar role as the team’s seventh defenseman. He has tallied one assist in five games for the Rangers this season, averaging 14:06 of ice time.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers are expecting to assign goaltender Aleksei Kolosov to the minor leagues before the AHL roster deadline on Friday per Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The move was first reported by Anthony SanFilippo of Philadelphia-based sports site On Pattison, who adds that the move isn’t a paper transaction. Kolosov has split time between the major and minor rosters this season, with a 4-8-1 record and .870 save percentage in 15 NHL games and a 2-4-1 record and .874 Sv% in seven AHL games. He was the starter for the KHL’s Dynamo Minsk last seaosn, where he set a much more acheived 22-21-3 record and .907 save percentage in 47 games.

Rangers Recall Matthew Robertson, To Place Adam Fox On IR

After losing a pair of defensemen during last night’s game against the New York Islanders, it comes as no surprise the New York Rangers have recalled defenseman Matthew Robertson from their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. Unfortunately, the recall comes with a major blow to their postseason chances as Arthur Staple of The Athletic reported the team is expected to place Adam Fox on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Fox left Tuesday night’s game in the third period due to the upper-body injury after tallying one assist in 17:48 of ice time. As Staple shared in his report, the Rangers are optimistic he can return for the final stretch of the regular season.

Still, Fox’s injury will severely impact New York’s playoff chances for the foreseeable future. Only one year removed from earning the ’Regular Season Champions’ banner at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers have posted a 29-25-4 record through 58 games this season. At the time of writing, that record is good for two points back of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Despite their proximity to the last playoff spot in the standings, MoneyPuck gives New York a 43.4% chance of reaching the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs — lower than their odds for the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings. Fox is one of the handful of players on the Rangers who hasn’t disappointed this season scoring five goals and 48 points in 58 games averaging 23:14 of ice time per night with a +5 rating.

Meanwhile, Robertson is positioned to debut in the NHL, albeit under unfortunate circumstances. The former 49th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft has been impressive for the Wolf Pack this year scoring one goal and 18 points in 47 contests with a +2 rating. The Rangers still carry six healthy defensemen on the roster outside of Fox but Robertson should likely debut given the length of Fox’s recovery timeline.

If general manager Chris Drury is hell-bent on getting New York to the playoffs for a fourth straight season the injury to Fox should affect their trade deadline strategy. The Rangers may ultimately hang on to oft-mentioned trade candidates such as Ryan Lindgren and K’Andre Miller. Additionally, Drury could begin putting feelers out in the rental market for right-handed defensemen.

Rangers Recall Zac Jones, Brennan Othmann

The Rangers announced they’ve reinstated defenseman Zachary Jones after sending him to AHL Hartford on a conditioning stint last week. They’ve also recalled high-end wing prospect Brennan Othmann from Hartford and sent defenseman Matthew Robertson there in a corresponding transaction, keeping their active roster at the maximum of 23 players since Jones still counted against the tally.

Jones’ conditioning stint followed 21 healthy scratches in 24 games leading into the 4 Nations break. The 24-year-old entered the season hoping to land a more significant role on the New York blue line after Erik Gustafsson left for the Red Wings in free agency, but it hasn’t panned out. The career No. 7 has only logged 28 appearances despite remaining mostly healthy, notching eight points with a plus-two rating while averaging a career-high 16:31 per game. He’s failed to land regular minutes amid significant turnover on the Rangers’ blue line throughout the year, namely shipping out captain Jacob Trouba and Victor Mancini while bringing in William Borgen and Urho Vaakanainen.

The 2019 third-round pick managed a goal and a minus-one rating in a pair of games for Hartford on Friday and Saturday. It was his first AHL action since the 2022-23 campaign when he recorded 8-23–31 and a +16 rating in 54 games for the Wolf Pack.

While a decent puck-mover in a bottom-pairing role, the Rangers’ general distrust of the 5’11” lefty’s skillset (and some poor possession numbers to back that up) have limited his ability to gain chances higher up in the lineup. He’s posted a negative relative CF% at even strength in all five of his NHL seasons, including a 47.2% outright (-3.9% relative) this year. Simply put, the Rangers control play more often when Jones isn’t on the ice.

He must reverse that perception down the stretch to avoid hitting unrestricted free agency. He’s at risk of being non-tendered as he nears the expiry of the two-year, $1.625MM extension he signed in 2023.

Othmann, 22, lands his first recall of the season. The 2021 16th overall pick made his NHL debut last year, going without a point in three games during a January callup. He did manage six shots on nine attempts, though, and laid the body six times while averaging under 10 minutes per game. While he was reasonably effective in a fourth-line role in his initial NHL showing, his point totals didn’t quite pop as he’d hoped in his first AHL go-around in 2023-24.

The Ontario native has missed significant time due to injury this season, but his point pace has improved slightly when healthy. The 6’0″, 181-lb left-winger has 12-8–20 in 27 games, adding 35 PIMs and a minus-one rating. He totaled 21-28–49 in 67 appearances for Hartford last year with a -24 rating, pointing to slight improvements across the board. He should get a look in the lineup while Chris Kreider is sidelined day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Robertson, 23, was only recalled to serve as an extra while Jones was in Hartford and did not draw into the lineup for either of the Blueshirts’ games this weekend. He’s now been recalled six times over the last two years but has not made his NHL debut. The 6’4″ lefty was a second-rounder back in 2019 and is now in his fourth season in Hartford, where he has 1-17–18 in 47 appearances this year with a career-high plus-two rating.

East Notes: Canadiens, Guhle, Senators, Robertson

While the Canadiens sit in the basement of the Atlantic Division once again and are speculated to be likely to move out more veterans, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette argues that Montreal might be better off retaining two in particular, defenseman Mike Matheson and center Jake Evans.  Matheson has one more year left on his contract at an affordable $4.875MM and had 15 points in 24 games so far this season after finishing in the top ten in scoring among NHL defenders in 2023-24.  But with Lane Hutson impressing early on, some have wondered if he’d be available.

As for Evans, the 28-year-old is off to a career-best start with five goals and nine assists through 26 outings while logging 16 minutes a game while leading all NHL forwards in shorthanded ice time.  A pending unrestricted free agent, he could conceivably double his current $1.7MM price tag on the open market.  With his low cost this season, Evans could be one of the Canadiens’ better trade chips but Cowan suggests that he and Matheson might be the right types of veterans to keep around as Montreal tries to emerge from its rebuild in the coming seasons.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference:

  • Still with Montreal, Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle missed Thursday’s game against Nashville due to illness. However, TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie reports (Twitter link) that indications are that the 22-year-old will return to the lineup tonight.  Guhle has recorded six points, 48 blocks, and 26 hits in 20 games so far while averaging a career-best 21:34 per night.
  • While the Senators may have had cursory discussions about acquiring Jacob Trouba, those talks wouldn’t have gone far, reports Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch. The veteran blueliner made it known that he had no interest in playing for a Canadian-based team which also took Montreal, a speculative landing spot with former Ranger GM Jeff Gorton in the front office, off the table.  Trouba eventually accepted a deal to Anaheim on Friday.
  • After being recalled yesterday, the Rangers announced (Twitter link) that defenseman Matthew Robertson has been re-assigned to AHL Hartford. The 23-year-old hasn’t made his NHL debut just yet but has started well with the Wolf Pack this season, notching eight points in 19 games so far.  New York is now down to just six healthy blueliners on its roster so this could be a case of Robertson (or someone else) being brought up on game days to serve as a seventh option for the time being.

East Notes: Greenway, Samuelsson, Robertson, Bruins

The Sabres are getting close to getting a couple of players back in the lineup.  Team reporter Justin Alpert relays that winger Jordan Greenway and defenseman Mattias Samuelsson both took part in practice today in regular (contact) jerseys after previously being limited to non-contact drills.  Greenway has been out for nearly three weeks due to a middle-body injury and has three goals and three assists through 16 games so far.  As for Samuelsson, he last played nearly four weeks ago due to a lower-body issue.  It has been a struggle for him this season as his playing time is down by more than four minutes a night while also briefly spending time as a healthy scratch.  Both players probably aren’t going to be ready for Saturday’s game versus Utah but they should be back soon after that.

Elsewhere in the East:

  • It turns out that Victor Mancini isn’t the only blueliner that the Rangers will bring up today. The team announced (Twitter link) that Matthew Robertson has been recalled from AHL Hartford.  The 23-year-old has yet to play at the NHL level but is off to a good start with the Wolf Pack this season, collecting eight points in 19 games so far.  He’s expected to serve as the seventh defender for the time being with recently acquired rearguard Urho Vaakanainen still out with an upper-body injury.
  • A day after papering them to the minors, the Bruins have recalled forward Marc McLaughlin and defenseman Jordan Oesterle from Providence, per the AHL’s transactions log. The move has been made frequently with both players as Boston attempts to bank some extra cap space to utilize later in the season.  McLaughlin has been held off the scoresheet in four games with the big club while Oesterle has three assists in his first six NHL games this season.

Rangers Make Nine Roster Moves

After submitting a cap-compliant roster for Monday’s opening-night deadline, the Rangers have shuffled their group to get to their actual game roster for tonight’s season opener against the Penguins. As expected, William Cuylle, Adam Edstrom, Victor Mancini, and Matt Rempe were recalled from AHL Hartford yesterday, making the team in effect, reports Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today Sports. Five players – forwards Anton Blidh, Jake Leschyshyn, and Adam Sýkora, as well as defensemen Ben Harpur and Matthew Robertson, were sent down to create roster and cap space.

The Rangers opened up a roster spot with the moves, but that’s not why they made them. Having the extra salary on the technical opening night roster allowed them to maximize their capture when placing winger Jimmy Vesey and his $800K cap hit on long-term injured reserve. They now have $792K in their season-opening LTIR pool, per PuckPedia. After yesterday’s moves, they’re sitting with north of $600K in cap space.

All four of yesterday’s recalls are expected to slide into the lineup against Pittsburgh tonight. Veteran Jonny Brodzinski appears to be on the outside looking in as the 13th forward to start the year, while Mancini will slide in for Ryan Lindgren, who’s on IR with an upper-body injury. It’ll be his NHL debut.

It’s an impressive feat for Mancini, who appears to have usurped veteran No. 7 option Chad Ruhwedel in the pecking order, at least for now. He’s also pushed himself up on the Blueshirts’ depth chart past other veteran defensive depth options with NHL experience like the aforementioned Harpur. The 22-year-old was a fifth-round pick just two years ago out of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where the 6’4″, 220-lb stay-at-home defender had four goals and 23 points in 110 games with a +4 rating. He’s entering his first full season of pro hockey but did close out last year with six assists in 17 combined regular-season and playoff games for Hartford.

Edstrom, listed at 6’6″, and Rempe, listed at 6’9″, are back to reprise their roles on one of the tallest combined forward lines in league history. They got spot duty together last season when they were both on the roster, getting seven games of action flanking Barclay Goodrow. The line has lost a couple of inches with the 6’2″ Goodrow now replaced by a 6’0″ Sam Carrick, but an opening night look is still promising for the younger duo of Edstrom and Rempe.

Edstrom, 24 on Saturday, had two goals in his first 11 NHL appearances last year. Rempe, meanwhile, scored a goal and an assist in 17 games. Only the 22-year-old Rempe saw playoff action, though, drawing into 11 of New York’s 16 postseason games en route to the Eastern Conference Final.

Cuylle was always a near-lock to make the team, only being sent down briefly for cap purposes, as mentioned earlier. The 22-year-old left winger had a promising rookie season in 2023-24, scoring 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points in 81 games while averaging 11:08 per game. He played a frequent third-line role at even strength but received little to no special teams usage. The 6’3″, 212-lb former second-rounder also finished fourth on the team in PIMs (56), tied for sixth in even-strength goals (12), and led them in hits (249).
