Evening Notes: Couture, Pesce, Kings, Johnsson

Originally, Sharks captain Logan Couture wasn’t supposed to miss much time due to his lower-body injury.  However, he still has yet to play this season with Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News relaying that the middleman hasn’t just suffered one setback in his recovery but rather two separate ones last month.  GM Mike Grier added that they’re not in a position at this point to say if he’ll be back in a month or two, only that it’s something he’s not able to play through.  San Jose could certainly use Couture’s offensive skills – he’s coming off a 67-point showing last season – but clearly, he won’t be making his season debut anytime soon.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • The Hurricanes welcomed back Brett Pesce to the lineup tonight against Florida. He had missed eight straight games due to a lower-body injury, hardly an ideal start to a contract year.  Pesce had been in trade speculation dating back to the summer but that cooled off with the injury.  Tony DeAngelo was a healthy scratch as a result of Pesce’s return.  Carolina never put Pesce on the injured list despite him missing three weeks so no corresponding roster move needs to be made.
  • The near-daily roster shuffling in Los Angeles continues as the Kings announced (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned defenseman Jordan Spence and center Jaret Anderson-Dolan to AHL Ontario. The moves get them out of LTIR for a day, allowing them to bank a tiny amount of cap space which will be useful when Viktor Arvidsson is cleared to return.  Los Angeles is back in action Saturday against Philadelphia and both players will almost certainly be back on the roster at that time.
  • As expected, veteran winger Andreas Johnsson has indeed signed with SHL Skelleftea, per a team release. The 28-year-old signed with Pittsburgh in the summer but cleared waivers in training camp and didn’t report to the minors.  The Penguins granted him his release earlier this week, paving the way for him to sign back home and play with his older brother.  It’s a four-year deal for Johnsson which means his days of playing in North America may very well be over.

Kings Recall Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Jordan Spence

10/26/23: Both players have now been recalled from the AHL roster, according to a team announcement from the Kings.

10/25/23: The Los Angeles Kings sent down forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan and defenseman Jordan Spence to AHL Ontario Wednesday, the team announced. Anderson-Dolan was brought up Monday for last night’s win against the Coyotes, while Spence had been on the NHL roster since an October 13 recall.

In fact, this is already the fourth time Anderson-Dolan has been assigned to Ontario just a few weeks into the season. After clearing waivers and not making the opening night roster, Anderson-Dolan was brought up along with Spence on October 13 and remained on the roster for a week before he was returned to the minors. He’s been papered up and down twice in the last five days.

Despite all the transactions, Anderson-Dolan has played just one game this season at either the NHL or AHL level – an October 14 shootout loss against the Hurricanes in which he played just 6:51. The Kings no longer lack salary cap space with Viktor Arvidsson on LTIR for the time being, so there’s no express necessity for Anderson-Dolan to get sent up and down other than extending the eligibility period for his waiver exemption. After clearing pre-season, he can be on the NHL roster for 30 days (or play ten NHL games) until he needs waivers to return to Ontario again. Sending him down on off days extends that clock and allows the Kings to keep him as a 13th forward for game days. The 24-year-old was a second-round pick of the Kings in the 2017 NHL Draft but has seen limited NHL action despite strong AHL production, notching 24 points in 97 NHL games since turning pro in 2019.

Spence, meanwhile, heads to Ontario with the Kings out of action until Friday. In five games this season, the 22-year-old has registered an assist but is averaging just 14:15 per game. His possession numbers have nosedived in a brief sample, posting a Corsi share of just 46.2% at even strength this season despite a career average of 56.2%. If the Kings don’t bring him back up for Friday’s rematch against the Coyotes, Tobias Bjornfot will draw into the lineup after serving as a healthy scratch for five of six games to start the year.

The transaction leaves Los Angeles with a bare minimum of 18 skaters and two goalies on the NHL roster.

Los Angeles Kings Recall Anderson-Dolan, Laferriere

Saturday: The Kings have brought both Anderson-Dolan and Laferriere back up to Los Angeles.  By sending them down yesterday, they were able to get out of using LTIR for the day, allowing them to bank a bit of much-needed cap space.

Friday: After yesterday’s commanding win against the Minnesota Wild, the Los Angeles Kings have announced they have sent down forwards Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Alex Laferriere to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.

Of the two, Anderson-Dolan has struggled to garner ice time the most, only suiting up for the team’s loss at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes last week, receiving just under seven minutes of ice time. He is no stranger to the Ontario Reign, having primarily played there since joining the Kings organization back in the 2017-18 season. In 112 games played at the AHL level, Anderson-Dolan has scored 32 goals and 45 assists, as well as chipping in one assist in eight playoff games.

Laferriere, on the other hand, is much newer to Los Angeles after having officially joined the Kings organization in April last year out of Harvard University. Laferriere was originally a third-round selection of Los Angeles back in the 2020 NHL Draft, and impressed mightily this preseason, scoring three goals and one assist in five games. Unfortunately, his hot start in the preseason did not carry into the regular season, as Laferriere has gone scoreless in his first four games, even after averaging 15 minutes of ice time and putting 13 shots on net.

In an even newer AHL season, the Ontario Reign could certainly use some reinforcements on both sides of the puck. In their first two games to start the season, the team has lost both, being outscored by a margin of five goals. Undoubtedly receiving plenty of ice time in the minors, Anderson-Dolan and Laferriere will both be put in positions to help the team correct their poor start to the season.

Team Canada’s U20 roster has announced that Alan Letang will serve as the team’s head coach, while Pete Anholt and Brent Seabrook will serve in management roles.

TSN’s Gord Miller quips that Letang has been a “gold medal magnet” in recent years, leading Canada to gold at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup this August and serving as an assistant coach for the championship-winning Canadians at the 2020 and 2023 World Junior Championship. Pete Anholt has served as the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ general manager since 2015. He also served as a head coach in the WHL for 15 seasons between 1989 and 2007.

This will be Brent Seabrook’s first involvement with the Canada U20 team since he played for them in 2004 and 2005, appearing at the World Junior Championship in both years. Since his NHL career ended in 2019-20, Seabrook has served as an assistant and development coach with the Vancouver Giants.

Oct. 9: Four players on this list were claimed today: A.J. Greer (Calgary), John Ludvig (Pittsburgh), Ivan Prosvetov (Colorado), and Lassi Thomson (Ottawa). All others have cleared and are expected to be assigned to their team’s respective AHL affiliates, aside from Boyd, who PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports remains on the Coyotes’ active roster for now.

Oct. 8: It’s expected to be a busy day on the waiver wire, as NHL teams are making their final adjustments to the roster they’ll bring into the start of the 2023-24 season. There have already been numerous notable names exposed to the waiver wire thus far this preseason, and that list could only expand today. All players from yesterday’s waiver wire have cleared.

The big surprise here out of Arizona regards Boyd. The versatile 30-year-old veteran doesn’t have an exorbitant contract (just $1.75MM through the end of the season) and has scored 69 points across the last two seasons.

He’s been something of a breakout player for the Coyotes as his 17-goal, 35-point 2022-23 was far and away his best season in his career, so it’s definitely a surprise to see him exposed on waivers.

For Anaheim, the move to waive Stalock likely means that Lukáš Dostál has won the Ducks’ backup goalie job behind John Gibson, as should Stalock clear the Ducks will have the option to send him down to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls.

In Edmonton, it comes as a little bit of a surprise to see Lavioe waived. The 23-year-old power forward was drafted just outside of the 2019 first round, and took a real step forward in his development last season. He became a genuinely impactful AHLer, scoring 25 goals and 45 points. He’s a name to watch in terms of players with the potential to be claimed out of this group.

Anderson-Dolan finally made the NHL on an extended basis last season, and scored 12 points in 46 games. He even got some playoff action under his belt, but seeing as he was a near-point-per-game scorer in his last season in the AHL, it seems the Kings could prefer to have him start the season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Rosen appears the likeliest candidate from the Blues’ group of waived players to be of interest to other teams, as he’s owed just a $762.5k cap hit this season and impressed in 49 games of NHL action last season. He scored 18 points in that span and could interest teams in need of some additional defensive help.

Out of Tampa is Bogosian, and it’s reported that the Lightning are hoping to put the veteran blueliner in a position to land on another team where he can play a bigger role than he’d be offered in Tampa. The 33-year-old won a Stanley Cup for the Lightning and it seems that the organization is looking to do right by the player while also turning to other options to staff their defense.

One of the biggest names on waivers comes out of Toronto, as Jones played in 48 games last season but now finds himself exposed to 31 other clubs. With an $875k cap hit, the veteran netminder could end up claimed by teams in need of instant goaltending support, such as the Lightning who don’t have much depth after the injury to superstar Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Los Angeles Kings Sign Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Mikhail Maltsev

Forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan is returning to the Los Angeles Kings despite not being issued a qualifying offer yesterday. Per the team, he’s been issued a one-year deal worth $775K. ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reports they’ve also signed forward Mikhail Maltsev to another one-year, $775K deal.

Anderson-Dolan has been with the Kings since he was drafted by them 41st overall at the 2017 draft. In 2021-22 Anderson-Dolan took a step forward in the AHL, scoring 24 goals and 47 points in 53 games. That earned him a long look at the NHL level, and he got into 46 regular-season games scoring seven goals and 12 points.

With this affordable contract extension, Anderson-Dolan is likely to once again be in place for a depth role in Los Angeles, though as he’s set to turn 24 he won’t be waiver-exempt as he was in earlier seasons.

Maltsev, 25, is a speedy winger who, like Anderson-Dolan, has been a quality scorer at the AHL level but hasn’t quite found his footing yet in the NHL. He’s got just nine points in 56 career NHL games but 91 points in 134 games at the AHL level.

While he’ll have to clear waivers to be sent to the Ontario Reign, the Kings’ affiliate, should he clear he’d boost their offensive attack while also serving as a call-up option should some injury issues hit the Kings’ lineup.

Kings Re-Sign Gabriel Vilardi And Jaret Anderson-Dolan

The Kings have agreed to terms with a pair of their remaining restricted free agents as the team announced that they’ve signed forwards Gabriel Vilardi and Jaret Anderson-Dolan to one-year contracts.  Vilardi receives a one-year, one-way deal worth $825K while Anderson-Dolan receives a two-way pact that’s worth $750K at the NHL level.

Vilardi was a first-round pick of Los Angeles back in 2017 (11th overall) but dealt with back trouble soon after.  The 22-year-old actually played less with the Kings last season (25 games) than he did in the pandemic-shortened campaign (54 contests) with the team being a little deeper up front plus their desire to give him big minutes in the minors.  In his NHL appearances, Vilardi picked five goals and two assists while averaging 13:31 per night but was much more productive with AHL Ontario, notching 15 goals and 23 helpers in just 39 contests.  In his career, he has played in a total of 89 NHL contests, collecting 18 goals and 19 assists.

While Vilardi was owed a qualifying offer of just over $874K, that only had to be a two-way offer.  By taking a little less than that, he was able to secure that as his guaranteed salary no matter where he plays (although he’s now waiver-eligible so it’s unlikely that he’d made it back to the Reign) while giving Los Angeles a bit of cap flexibility.

As for Anderson-Dolan, the 22-year-old is also coming off his entry-level deal.  The 2017 second-rounder (41st overall) also saw less NHL action than in the pandemic-shortened season, going from 34 NHL appearances in 2020-21 to just seven in 2021-22 (where he was held off the scoresheet).  He played quite well in the minors though, finishing third on the Reign in scoring with 24 goals and 23 assists in 54 games.

Anderson-Dolan also took less than his NHL qualifying offer which will result in him receiving a higher AHL salary than he would have received had he taken his qualifier.  However, he’s also waiver-eligible next season and as a young center with 50 career NHL games under his belt, putting him on waivers to try to send him back to Ontario would be a little risky.  Instead, he would be a candidate to break camp as an extra which wouldn’t be great for his development but would ensure he’d remain with the organization.

The Kings still have some work to do on the RFA front with defensemen Michael Anderson and Sean Durzi in need of new contracts.  With limited cap space, they will likely need to pursue short-term agreements with both players in the coming days.

ESPN’s Kevin Weekes was the first to report that both players had re-signed.

Kings Place Blake Lizotte In COVID Protocol

The Kings have announced (Twitter link) a series of transactions highlighted with the placement of center Blake Lizotte into COVID protocol.  Taking his place on the roster is Jaret Anderson-Dolan while T.J. Tynan has also been recalled to replace Kale Clague who was just claimed off waivers by Montreal.

Lizotte has played in all but one game so far this season for Los Angeles, tallying a goal and four assists while logging 11:36 per game primarily on the fourth line.  The 23-year-old has also won a career-high 53.1% of his faceoffs, good for third on the team in that regard.

Anderson-Dolan was a regular with the Kings for the bulk of last season, getting into 34 games where he picked up 11 points before suiting up for Canada at the World Championships.  However, with more depth down the middle this season, he has spent all of 2021-22 so far with AHL Ontario playing heavier minutes and he has responded with 13 points in 16 contests with the Reign.  He should have an opportunity to move into Lizotte’s spot on the depth chart and play the type of role he had last season.

As for Tynan, the 29-year-old is in his first season with the Kings and cleared waivers back in training camp.  He has been quite productive with Ontario, collecting 17 points in 12 games which puts him second in team scoring.  Despite his consistent offensive numbers over the years, he has played in just 19 career NHL contests, the most recent coming back in the 2019-20 season with Colorado.

Los Angeles Kings Recall Four Players

4:05pm: The Kings have actually recalled three more players for tonight’s game, bringing Samuel Fagemo, Jordan Spence and Jacob Ingham up. The team also announced that Byfield will be out week to week, but further evaluations are still underway.

11:40am: Though they were already sent to the AHL and likely won’t be making the opening night roster, four young players are back up with the Los Angeles Kings for the time being. The team recalled Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Arthur Kaliyev, Rasmus Kupari, and Alex Turcotte ahead of their preseason game against the Anaheim Ducks tonight.

The recalls do follow an unfortunate injury to Quinton Byfield, who was caught up in an awkward hit with Arizona Coyotes forward Christian Fischer last night. He was helped off the ice and the Kings are expected to release an update on his status today. It wasn’t certain that Byfield would make the team, but he was making a great impression this preseason with his improved all-around play.

The four recalled today represent the prospect tier just under Byfield for the Kings, all players who have a legitimate shot at long NHL careers. Each should see some time with Los Angeles this season but it is unlikely that their performance tonight would propel them into a roster spot right away. That is of course unless the team suffers any further injuries; this group will likely be the first few names recalled in that case.

Hockey Canada Announces 2021 World Championship Roster

The IIHF World Championship roster is always a little different. Because the tournament takes place during the NHL playoffs, many players are unable to attend. Many others choose not to participate because of injuries they sustained during the season, meaning there are often some interesting choices that compete for their country.

Like the U.S. roster that was officially released just a few days ago, the Canadian contingent looks even more odd than normal. Not only does the management team have injuries and the postseason to deal with, but many players haven’t seen their families for months and just want to spend some quality time at home.

Though the initial paperwork had been reported on recently, the full official roster is as follows:

Like the U.S. squad, which includes draft-eligible Matthew Beniers, the Canadians have decided to take along his University of Michigan teammate Power. The 18-year-old Power is expected to challenge for the first overall selection this season and will get a chance to showcase his talents on the international stage, after being denied his opportunity to compete at the World Juniors.
