Pacific Notes: Walman, Laferriere, Burroughs, Blueger

While it was a good day off the ice today for Jake Walman with a seven-year extension in-hand, the on-ice news isn’t as good.  Team reporter Tony Brar relays (Twitter link) that the blueliner has suffered a setback in recovering from an undisclosed injury that has kept him out for most of the preseason.  Instead of being expected to suit up on Wednesday against Calgary, he is now listed as questionable.  The 29-year-old logged over 20 minutes a game both down and in the playoffs for the Oilers and is likely to play a similar top-four role this season; it just might take a little longer before his 2025-26 campaign actually gets underway.

  • Initially concerned about his availability for opening night, the Kings now believe winger Alex Laferriere will be able to go. Eric Stephens of The Athletic notes (Twitter link) that the 23-year-old was on his usual line in practice, not long after head coach Jim Hiller expressed some doubt that he’d be available to play on Tuesday.  Laferriere is coming off a strong sophomore season that saw him notch 42 points in 77 games, earning him a three-year, $12.3MM contract this summer.
  • Still with the Kings, the team announced that they’ve placed defenseman Kyle Burroughs on injured reserve. The 30-year-old suffered an upper-body injury in Tuesday’s preseason game against Utah.  Burroughs had a sparing role last season, appearing in just 33 games where he logged less than eight minutes per night.  For comparison, he averaged 19:09 in 2023-24 in San Jose.
  • Canucks center Teddy Blueger is ‘dinged up’, according to Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province. Assistant coach Scott Young noted that the next few days will determine if he’s ultimately able to suit up in Thursday’s season opener.  The 31-year-old had 26 points and a career-high 104 hits in 82 games with Vancouver last season.

Kings Sign RFA Alex Laferriere To Three-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Kings have signed restricted free agent Alex Laferriere to a three-year, $12.3MM contract, per a team announcement. The deal comes with a $4.1MM cap hit per season. The deal includes a $3.5MM salary for year one and $4.4MM salaries for years two and three, per PuckPedia. The Kings extended a qualifying offer to Laferriere on July 1, and it took exactly one month for both sides to come to terms on a new deal.

Coming off of his second season in the league, the 24-year-old right winger posted a solid 19 goals and 42 points in 77 games. He also produced a plus-22 rating, 124 hits, and 43 blocked shots while averaging 16:22 of ice time per night. He added three assists in six playoff games.

A third-round selection in the 2020 draft (83rd overall), the New Jersey native quickly established himself as one of the franchise’s key prospects. After being drafted, Laferriere spent two seasons in the NCAA at Harvard University, where he put up 73 points in 69 games. He then made his pro debut in the AHL with the Ontario Reign at the tail end of the 2022-23 season.

That was all the minor league experience the 6’1″, 205-pound winger needed. The following season, he broke camp with the Kings and appeared in 81 games as a rookie, posting 12 goals and 23 points. He took a major step forward offensively this last season (doubling his point total), and it’s reasonable to expect continued growth.

Injury Updates: Doughty, Laferierre, Drouin, Joshua

There could be some good news on the horizon for Kings defenseman Drew Doughty.  Darren Dreger reported in TSN’s latest Insider Trading segment that the blueliner could practice in a non-contact capacity next week.  At this point, the team is hoping that the 35-year-old could return to the lineup before next month’s 4 Nations Face-Off.  Doughty has yet to play this season due to an ankle injury, causing a big blow to Los Angeles’ back end.  The Kings are currently using LTIR and haven’t banked much cap space so when Doughty does return, their cap flexibility will take a hit but their blueline will get a significant boost as they look to move up in the Pacific Division.

Other injury news from around the NHL:

  • Still with the Kings, Zach Dooley of LA Kings Insider relays that winger Alex Laferriere won’t play on Thursday due to an upper-body injury with a further update on his status expected later in the week. The 23-year-old is having a strong sophomore year, notching 13 goals and 13 assists through his first 41 games, already besting his numbers from last season.  His absence should open up a spot for Samuel Helenius – just recalled today – to get into the lineup.
  • Avalanche winger Jonathan Drouin has battled injury issues this season and it appears that the injury is something he’s going to be battling for a while yet. He told reporters including Evan Rawal of The Denver Gazette that this is something that’s likely to linger for the next little while and is hoping that the long break for the 4 Nations Face-Off will allow the injury – Rawal indicates that it’s a rib issue – to properly heal.  When healthy, Drouin has fared quite well with 10 points in 12 games but it’s fair to say that this hasn’t been the best first half in what is another contract year for him.
  • Canucks forward Dakota Joshua has skated a couple of times as he starts to work his way back from a leg injury suffered earlier this month, notes Postmedia’s Patrick Johnston. However, they’ve been light skates and he’s still not particularly close to returning as he remains listed as week-to-week.  After a breakout showing last season, this year hasn’t gone as well for Joshua (who missed the start of it while recovering from testicular cancer) as he has just four points along with 83 hits in 24 games.

Kings Notes: Turcotte, Thomas, Laferriere, Swamp Rabbits

As the Los Angeles Kings prepare for the team’s final game of the regular season on Thursday night, they will have a young prospect returning to the lineup. The organization announced they have activated forward Alex Turcotte from long-term injured reserve, and have loaned forward Akil Thomas to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.

Turcotte, who was the fifth overall pick of the Kings back in the 2019 NHL Draft, will return to the active roster for the first time in about a month due to an upper-body injury. At the NHL level, Turcotte has suited up in 20 games for Los Angeles, scoring one goal and four points in total. In Ontario, he has been far more productive, scoring seven goals and 25 points in 33 games, leading to four separate call-ups this season.

Thomas, on the other hand, has spent far less time at the NHL level as compared to Turcotte. Recalled on an emergency basis on March 31st, Thomas has matched Turcotte’s production on the year, scoring one goal and four points in seven games. Similarly to Turcotte, the former 51st overall pick has been far more productive with the Reign, scoring 22 goals and 43 points over 61 games this season.

Other Kings notes:

  • According to CapFriendly, since Kings’ forward Alex Laferriere played in his 80th game of the season last night against the Minnesota Wild, he has lost his waiver exemption status for next season. Whether it be after training camp or any time during next season, Los Angeles will have to place Laferriere on the waiver wire if they wish to send him down to the AHL. Nevertheless, it is rather unlikely the Kings would choose to send Laferriere anytime soon, as he has scored 11 goals and 23 points throughout this season, making for a productive rookie campaign.
  • Moving to the ECHL, the Kings organization has signed their current ECHL affiliate, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, to a two-year extension. Located in South Carolina, the Swamp Rabbits have been the ECHL affiliate of Los Angeles since the start of the 2022-23 NHL season and will continue in that role until the end of 2025-26.

Pacific Notes: Golden Knights, Kraken, Laferriere

Over the last two games, the Vegas Golden Knights have been without the trio of Chandler Stephenson, Nicolas Hague, and Nicolas Roy. Over that time, the league-leading Golden Knights have gone 1-1-0, losing to their division rival, Los Angeles Kings, last Wednesday.

In an update from practice today, Ben Gotz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that none of the trio are to be expected back in the team’s game against the Washington Capitals tomorrow night, but issued assurances they could be back by the weekend. Of the three, Roy has had the longest absence, after being put on the team’s injured reserve on October 24th.

Of the three, Stephenson is the most important to get back into the lineup, as he remains on one of the best-value contracts in the NHL. On the last season of a four-year, $11MM contract signed with Vegas back in 2020, Stephenson has scored 53 goals and 121 assists over 224 games as a Golden Knight.

Other notes:

  • Some notable additions to the Seattle Kraken practice were Brandon Tanev and Jordan Eberle, who is now without a non-contact jersey, respectively (X Link). Eberle has gotten off to a relatively slow start with the Kraken this year, Eberle has scored four points in 13 games, coupled with a -8 rating already this season.
  • According to the AHL transaction log, young NHL enforcer, Alex Laferriere is back on the roster with Los Angeles (X Link). Primarily playing in the team’s bottom six over the course of the young season, Laferriere has scored two goals and one assist through 14 games.

Los Angeles Kings Recall Anderson-Dolan, Laferriere

Saturday: The Kings have brought both Anderson-Dolan and Laferriere back up to Los Angeles.  By sending them down yesterday, they were able to get out of using LTIR for the day, allowing them to bank a bit of much-needed cap space.

Friday: After yesterday’s commanding win against the Minnesota Wild, the Los Angeles Kings have announced they have sent down forwards Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Alex Laferriere to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.

Of the two, Anderson-Dolan has struggled to garner ice time the most, only suiting up for the team’s loss at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes last week, receiving just under seven minutes of ice time. He is no stranger to the Ontario Reign, having primarily played there since joining the Kings organization back in the 2017-18 season. In 112 games played at the AHL level, Anderson-Dolan has scored 32 goals and 45 assists, as well as chipping in one assist in eight playoff games.

Laferriere, on the other hand, is much newer to Los Angeles after having officially joined the Kings organization in April last year out of Harvard University. Laferriere was originally a third-round selection of Los Angeles back in the 2020 NHL Draft, and impressed mightily this preseason, scoring three goals and one assist in five games. Unfortunately, his hot start in the preseason did not carry into the regular season, as Laferriere has gone scoreless in his first four games, even after averaging 15 minutes of ice time and putting 13 shots on net.

In an even newer AHL season, the Ontario Reign could certainly use some reinforcements on both sides of the puck. In their first two games to start the season, the team has lost both, being outscored by a margin of five goals. Undoubtedly receiving plenty of ice time in the minors, Anderson-Dolan and Laferriere will both be put in positions to help the team correct their poor start to the season.

Snapshots: Team Canada, Kings, Carolina Injuries, Fabbri

Team Canada’s U20 roster has announced that Alan Letang will serve as the team’s head coach, while Pete Anholt and Brent Seabrook will serve in management roles.

TSN’s Gord Miller quips that Letang has been a “gold medal magnet” in recent years, leading Canada to gold at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup this August and serving as an assistant coach for the championship-winning Canadians at the 2020 and 2023 World Junior Championship. Pete Anholt has served as the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ general manager since 2015. He also served as a head coach in the WHL for 15 seasons between 1989 and 2007.

This will be Brent Seabrook’s first involvement with the Canada U20 team since he played for them in 2004 and 2005, appearing at the World Junior Championship in both years. Since his NHL career ended in 2019-20, Seabrook has served as an assistant and development coach with the Vancouver Giants.

Los Angeles Kings Sign Alex Laferriere

The Los Angeles Kings have signed prospect forward Alex Laferriere to a three-year entry-level contract, per a team announcement. The former Harvard star is currently playing with the Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, on an amateur tryout agreement, and recently tallied his first professional goal.

The 21-year-old’s contract carries an $875k average annual value for its three-year runtime and will expire in the summer of 2025. Laferriere earns this deal after an exceptional collegiate career, one where he scored a total of 73 points in 69 games.

While Laferriere’s 2022-23 season saw him score at a higher rate (42 points in 34 games compared to 31 points in 35 games as a freshman) it was his freshman year that saw him fill his trophy cabinet. The 2020 third-round pick won the ECAC title and landed the individual honors of conference Rookie of the Year and Third-Team All-Star.

Now playing on the first line of the Kings’ AHL affiliate next to T.J. Tynan and Lias Andersson, Laferriere will look to help the Reign go on a deep run in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

While it’s unknown whether the plan is to give Laferriere a chance in one of the Kings’ remaining games, the signing of this entry-level deal at least gives the Kings the option to call him up if they so desire. If anything, the main benefit to Laferriere is less the possibility of getting an NHL game or two, and more the fact that he’ll be eligible to hit restricted free agency in the summer of 2025, despite spending most of the season playing college hockey.
