Stars Re-Sign Jordie Benn

The Dallas Stars have re-signed D Jordie Benn to a three year contract, the team announced Friday.  ESPN/TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports the deal will carry a cap hit of $1.1MM.

Last season, he suited up in 64 games for the Stars, scoring three times and added nine assists while averaging 15:39 per game in ice time.  He also got into one of their 13 postseason contests.  Benn has spent his entire five year career with Dallas after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2011, playing in 244 games, scoring nine goals and 47 assists.

Jordie is the older brother of Jamie Benn, one of the NHL’s top scorers in recent years.  It’s likely that he will reprise his role as the 6th or 7th defenseman for the Stars next season.  PHR had him rated 48th on our top 50 list of unrestricted free agents.

Top Draft Prospects: Pierre-Luc Dubois

With the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft just two days away, we look at the top prospects available Friday night.  Previously we took a look at Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi and Matthew Tkachuk; today we’ll look a little closer at Cape Breton Screaming Eagle Pierre-Luc Dubois.

2015-16

After scoring 45 points in 56 games as a 16-year old in his first season in the QMJHL, Dubois turned up the offense this year as he continued to grow into his large frame.  His 99 points in 2015-16 placed him third in the league, trailing only 20-year old over-agers in Conor Garland and Francis Perron (128 and 108 points respectively) and easily topped Red Wings’ first-round pick Evgeny Svechnikov and the rest of the Screaming Eagles.

The Eagles would go down in the second round of the playoffs, but it wasn’t because of Dubois, as the big center put up 12 points in 12 games despite being suspended for the first round opener after a illegal check late in the season.

Dubois didn’t see any international competition this season, as he was cut from World Junior Championship roster along with fellow top prospect Jakob Chychrun.  Perhaps he used it as motivation for the massive season he put up thereafter.

Scouting Report

Seen by many as the second best center available this year (behind Matthews), Dubois provides an excellent power option down the middle. With a combination of strength and skill, he’s an exceptional scoring threat with the puck on his stick as he heads into the zone, or along the boards down low. While his shot isn’t as highly regarded as Laine’s, he gets it off very quickly and with a lot of accuracy, especially in tight.

His skating, while not as developed as Matthews’, is actually a strength as he uses his long stride and powerful lower half to move quickly around the ice. He often catches defenders off-guard with his top gear, despite lacking an elite first few steps.

In the defensive end, Dubois isn’t afraid to use his size to remove attackers from the puck, laying thunderous checks that sometimes toe the line of legality. After the whistle, he’s often involved in scrums because of his style of play, though he has recognized his value to the team and learned to keep his cool. A smart player, he’s usually in a good position defensively, and should be able to handle that part of the game at the next level.

While his offense is driven by a power game similar to Stars’ forward Jamie Benn (who, incidentally, he models his play after), he lacks elite-level creativity and may be limited by it at the NHL level. If he can continue to grow into his frame, and improve his acceleration and defensive game he may eventually become a number 1 center in the NHL, but there is some doubt he’ll stay in the middle long-term. At the very worst, he becomes a big winger with some finishing ability and a lot of nastiness.

Dubois isn’t set to turn 18 until the day of the draft, and because of it isn’t eligible for the AHL until 2018-19. Even with his advanced size and strength, he’s almost a lock to head back to the Screaming Eagles for at least one more season. Look for him to challenge for the CHL scoring title before entering the NHL as a 19-year old in 2017-18.

 

Coyotes Sign Alex Goligoski To 5-Year Contract

The Arizona Coyotes officially announced the signing of defenseman Alex Goligoski this morning. The 30-year-old defenseman was acquired from the Dallas Stars last week for Arizona’s 2016 fifth round draft pick. Though the Coyotes are not disclosing financials, Yahoo reported that the deal was worth $5.5MM per year. Bob McKenzie tweeted that the deal was for approximately $5.475MM. CapFriendly mirrored McKenzie’s figure.

General manager John Chayka praised Goligoski as a smart puck moving defenseman who will make his teammates better. Arizona Central’s Sarah McLellan tweets that Chayka is trying to make Arizona a destination for hockey and that acquiring Goligoski’s rights was a “calculated risk.”  Stephen Whyno tweets that this is the first of many moves the Coyotes expect to make.

Craig Morgan reported that Goligoski knew immediately that he wanted to sign with the ’Yotes. McLellan tweeted how the Coyotes “checked all the boxes” for the veteran defenseman. Before his signing,  he was one of the top free agent defensemen targets this offseason.

With Dallas, Goligoski had 37 points (5-32) and added 7 points (4-3) in 14 playoff games. He logged nearly 24 minutes per night on the ice. The same will be expected from him in Arizona as he joins a blue line that features young star Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

This is the first of many moves expected by the Coyotes. In addition to having the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, Arizona is one of the three teams rumored to absorb Pavel Datsyuk’s contract from the Detroit Red Wings.

 

 

Mirtle’s Latest: Chayka, Demers, Yandle

The busiest time of the year is starting over the next few weeks, with the Entry Draft and July 1st free agency. Rumors are swirling already about almost every player in the league and James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail mentions that the salary cap isn’t going to rise much more than $1.5MM even if the NHLPA exercises their 5% bump.  That’ll give a lot of teams pause about locking in long-term to free agents, while their own cap situation isn’t settled. Here’s more from Mirtle:

  • Youngest GM in NHL history John Chayka (only 27-years old) has already begun to make an impact on the Arizona Coyotes, moving to acquire the rights to Alex Goligoski last week, and Mirtle believes he’s aiming at a return to the playoffs as soon as next season.  Martin Hanzal, his biggest trade chip has been dangled recently and doesn’t look like a long-term option in the desert.
  • Jason Demers, one of three exceptional Dallas blueliners that are reaching free agency this summer has apparently priced himself out of the Stars’ market, asking for an annual value close to $5.5MM. Demers, along with Goligoski and Kris Russell are three of the top five defense options this offseason.
  • Number 1 on that list, Keith Yandle is believed to be seeking a seven-year deal on the open market, Mirtle suggests. The Avalanche are an option for the Rangers’ blueliner, as they look to add to their team coming off a disappointing 39-39-4 season.
  • Mirtle mentions that despite the Jets best efforts to re-sign restricted free agent Jacob Trouba, teams around the league still believe he is available for the right price.  The former 9th overall pick has been a steady presence on the Jets back-end and is only 22.

Snapshots: Okposo, Lucic, Walsh

With the buyout period starting Wednesday, and the entry draft coming closer and closer, teams have started making decisions on upcoming free agents and begun to make calls on available players.  Already we have seen a deal for Bryan Bickell and Teuvo Teravainen, and just yesterday the Stars traded away the negotiating rights to upcoming UFA Alex Goligoski. Obviously the team felt they were not going to be able to get a deal done before July 1st.  Here are some other notes about upcoming free agents:

  • It sounds like Kyle Okposo is on his way off the Island, as General Manager Garth Snow recently was quoted saying “We wish him nothing but the best.”  Okposo heads into this offseason as one of the top forwards available after scoring 64 points this past year.  That tied him with Steven Stamkos for the most from any upcoming UFA.
  • In an interesting read from John Hoven around Kings’ GM Dean Lombardi’s latest media call, he reveals that they will be making an offer to Milan Lucic, but that “there’s a number of things we had to work through that we didn’t anticipate.” While it’s not clear exactly what that means, one has to wonder if it’s a medical issue that surfaced after the playoffs.  Lucic put up another strong season with 55 points this year, and notched 20 goals for fifth time in his career.
  • In Chris Nichols’ latest, he talks to Octagon Hockey agent Allan Walsh about the interview period that beings five days prior to July 1st. In it he voices his concerns over who it benefits: “I would love to get rid of it. it gives teams a tremendous advantage going into July 1, and really doesn’t benefit the players much, if at all.” Walsh would like to get back to a time when July started with a true frenzy for players, stating “Decisions had to be made in five minutes or 10 minutes. Big decisions. For many years of term. And a lot of dollars.” Walsh represents many upcoming UFAs including David Perron and Brian Campbell.

Coyotes Acquire Alex Goligoski’s Negotiating Rights From Stars

3:32 PM: The Coyotes have made the acquisition official.  The Stars receive Arizona’s 5th round pick in next week’s draft (128th overall) in return.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie notes that there is no deal currently in place between Goligoski and the Coyotes.  Pierre LeBrun of TSN/ESPN adds that the Stars did try to get a deal done with Goligoski but couldn’t agree to terms so the team decided to get something for his rights rather than lose him for nothing in a couple of weeks.

3:15 PM: According to ESPN’s Craig Custance, the Arizona Coyotes are on the verge of acquiring the negotiating rights to pending unrestricted free agent blueliner Alex Goligoski from the Dallas Stars.

Goligoski suited up in all 82 regular season for the Stars in 2015-16, picking up 5 goals and 32 assists while logging just shy of 24 minutes per game in ice time.  He also posted a +21 rating, good for a tie for 7th amongst all NHL defenders.  He also played in 13 postseason contests, collecting 4 goals and 3 assists while averaging 23:12 per game.

By acquiring his rights, Arizona will have exclusive negotiating rights to talk to the 30 year old Goligoski until the UFA interview period opens up on June 25th.  The Stars still have a pair of pending UFA defensemen to deal with in Jason Demers and Kris Russell.

Free Agent Focus: Dallas Stars

After a season that saw the Dallas Stars lead the Western Conference with 109 points, and be one of only two teams to record 50 wins, they have a long offseason in front of them if they’re to keep the strong core in tact. On the backs of superstars Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, they easily led the NHL in goals, hitting the twine 267 times in 2015-16. Here is a look at their upcoming offseason:

Key Restricted Free Agent: RW Valeri Nichushkin – Unfortunately for the Stars, it’s not the restricted free agents that are going to cause them headaches this summer it’s the eight UFAs they’ll see leave them. They do, however have one very important RFA in Valeri Nichushkin, the Russian powerhouse selected in the first round (10th overall) of the 2013 entry draft.

After putting up 14 goals and 34 points as an 18-year old after being drafted, the winger missed almost all of 2014-15 with a hip injury that needed corrective surgery.  This season the now 21-year old was back on a strong development path, putting up 29 points coming off injury. His 6’4″, 205 pound frame is a scout’s dream when it comes with at least average skating ability, and Nichushkin has shown he can keep up in the NHL. While the idea of him hitting the ice alongside Benn and Seguin might still be another year away, he played well when paired with Jason Spezza this season, and will look to continue his development into a top-flight power forward in the league.

Other RFAs: Jamie Oleksiak

Key Unrestricted Free Agents: D Alex Goligoski, D Jason Demers, D Kris Russell – Somehow the Stars have three excellent defenders 30 or under hitting free agency this offseason, and are expected to lose at least two of them if not all three.  They still have John Klingberg and Johnny Oduya under contract for next season at $4.25MM and $3.75MM respectively, but might not be able to keep up with the bidding war that the trio will command.  Other than Keith Yandle in New York, these three represent the best young defense options on the market this summer.

With Jamie Benn set to become a UFA in 2017, the Stars will be trying to keep some room under the cap to extend him long-term. He’ll be looking to jump from his current $5.25MM salary to somewhere around $10MM, and with Patrick Sharp and Ales Hemsky becoming UFAs at the same time, the Stars might not have the room to commit long term to more than one of the d-men.

Other UFAs: Vernon Fiddler, Patrick Eaves, Jordie Benn, Colton Sceviour, Travis Moen

Projected Cap Space: $13.75MM, 16 players under contract.

Overall, the Stars have a little bit of money to play with but have to be very careful where they put it, as the mentioned names are coming up next season.  With Jason Spezza earning $7.5MM a season over the next three years, the team will have over $20 million locked into three players if they indeed extend Benn. With the cap looking like it will hold steady for at least a couple of seasons, putting almost a third of your budget in three players is a risky proposition – just ask the Chicago Blackhawks who had to give up Teuvo Teravainen earlier today because of their cap mismanagement.
