Rangers Claim Cody McLeod; Blues Waive Magnus Paajarvi

The New York Rangers have decided to add a little toughness to their lineup, today claiming Cody McLeod off waivers from the Nashville Predators. Nathan Gerbe, who was also on waivers after signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets, has cleared and will be assigned to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. In addition, Magnus Paajarvi has been waived by the St. Louis Blues.

Magnus PaajarviThis is the second time the Rangers have claimed a physical fourth-line presence this season after adding Adam Cracknell earlier in the year. While Cracknell was eventually flipped in a minor trade, McLeod could catch on as a bang-and-crash winger who is ready to drop the gloves in defense of a teammate. Though that style is rarely seen in the game these days, McLeod has continued to find work and will try to prove his value in New York.

The Rangers needed to make a corresponding roster move to fit McLeod in, and sent Daniel Catenacci to the minor leagues to make room. Vinni Lettieri and Anthony DeAngelo are the only players on the roster who are waiver exempt, however Peter Holland could’ve also still also been sent without having to clear waivers again, as he hasn’t been up long enough for his clock to reset.

Paajarvi’s inclusion on waivers is interesting, if not entirely unexpected. The Blues have activated Jaden Schwartz from injured reserve, and needed a roster spot for him to fit in. While Tage Thompson and Ivan Barbashev are both waiver-exempt, both have proven themselves as key parts of the forward group and won’t be sent down anytime soon.

Instead, it’s Paajarvi’s turn to be risked on waivers. The 10th-overall pick in 2009 hasn’t ever established himself as an offensive presence in the NHL, instead playing the roll of checking forward and penalty killer. In 352 career games, Paajarvi has 97 points including just four this season. While his age (26), size (6’3″ 206-lbs) and draft pedigree all suggest that there still could be another level to his play, nothing on the ice confirms it.

Still, he could be an interesting player for a contending team to add if they’re not happy with their own depth. Earning just $800K before hitting unrestricted free agency this summer, Paajarvi poses very little risk in terms of financial commitment. It’s important to note that Arizona, Toronto and Minnesota are all at their 50 contract limit, meaning they’d need to rid themselves of another player before making a claim.

Snapshots: Dubinsky, Point, Marchand

The intrigue around Brandon Dubinsky and his apparent departure from the Columbus Blue Jackets continues. After Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reported earlier that it was for disciplinary reasons, his agent Kurt Overhardt reached out to the Steve Gorten at the Columbus Dispatch to insist that it is actually for medical reasons.

The agent claims that he just needed to get “residual issues” from his broken orbital bone as well as hand and wrist injuries checked out, and flatly denied any disciplinary action. We’ll have to wait and see what happens after the All-Star break, at which point Dubinsky should have been ready to return to the ice, likely wearing a full face shield.

  • Brayden Point will be the replacement for Victor Hedman at the All-Star game in Tampa Bay, despite not playing the same position. Likely defensive replacements Morgan Rielly and Charlie McAvoy have both since suffered their own injuries, and perhaps the NHL wanted to maintain the same number of “hometown” players. The game is being held in Tampa Bay this weekend, where sophomore center Point will make his first appearance.
  • Interestingly Brad Marchand, who has a disciplinary hearing with the league today after his elbow to the head of Marcus Johansson last night, will likely be part of the All-Star festivities regardless of a pending suspension. That’s according to several reporters including Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, who notes that the league does not have a firm policy for a case like this. If Marchand is removed from the All-Star game, you’d have to think his place would go to one of his linemates Patrice Bergeron or David Pastrnak, each of whom already have 20 goals on the season.

Minor Transactions: 01/24/18

We’ve already seen a signing today that brought Nathan Gerbe back into the North American fold, but there will be several other minor moves around the league. Right here is where we’ll keep track of all of them.

  • The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Tucker Poolman from the minor leagues, placing Shawn Matthias on injured reserve. The move could be due to Dmitry Kulikov’s injury, suffered after being hit by Tomas Hertl last night. Poolman has played 13 games this season for the Jets, recording a single point but showing that he could potentially be an answer on defense in the coming years. The 24-year old turned pro out of the University of North Dakota last March, and will be a restricted free agent at the end of this season.
  • Oscar Dansk has been loaned back to the Chicago Wolves, now that he is healthy enough to return to action. Dansk was moved off injured reserve this week and will continue his development in the AHL. The 23-year old played in four games with the Vegas Golden Knights this season, allowing just five goals and recording a .946 save percentage.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have indeed sent David Booth to the minor leagues now that he’s cleared waivers for the third time. The team recalled Dominic Turgeon, who had only just been sent down this week, to take his place.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent Tyler Motte back to the minor leagues, another good sign for Cam Atkinson who is close to returning. Atkinson had his foot broken by a Seth Jones shot just a month ago, but has been skating with the team recently.
  • With James Reimer dealing with a lower-body injury, the Florida Panthers have recalled goaltender Samuel Montembeault from the AHL. That puts the Panthers with a duo of Montembeault and Harri Sateri, who have a combined three NHL appearances (all Sateri). It’s not clear how serious Reimer’s injury is, but we’ll surely find out soon.
  • According to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, the San Jose Sharks have brought Marcus Sorensen back up from the minor leagues after getting the news that Joe Thornton would be out at least a couple of weeks. Sorensen has played 15 games for the Sharks this season, scoring three goals.
  • The Penguins Penguins have sent goaltender Tristan Jarry to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.  This will allow him to play in up to two games in the minors during the NHL All-Star break.  Jarry has lost playing time to Casey DeSmith in recent games so this will serve as an opportunity to keep him in playing shape before deciding whether or not to bring him back afterwards.

Nashville Predators Place Cody McLeod On Waivers

The Nashville Predators have placed forward Cody McLeod on waivers, while the Columbus Blue Jackets have waived Nathan Gerbe as expected after signing him earlier today. The Predators will need another roster spot for Filip Forsberg when he comes off injured reserve, and only Kevin Fiala is waiver-exempt.

McLeod, 33, was acquired by the Predators last season to add some toughness and physicality to the fourth line. In 56 games with them last season including 15 playoff contests, McLeod recorded six goals and 152 hits, collecting 120 penalty minutes along the way. He’s returned on the final season of his three-year deal, recording two points in 23 games.

While McLeod does add some level of physicality, the Predators had been using him less and less recently, with his last game coming more than three weeks ago. He had played more than 10 minutes just once this season, and doesn’t seem to be a big part of the team’s plans going forward.

Interestingly though, the Colorado Avalanche are still retaining a portion of McLeod’s $1.33MM cap hit, meaning he is an extremely affordable piece for a club looking for that same physical play Nashville was after last season. If unclaimed, he would likely head to Milwaukee to play in the AHL.

Gerbe, signed out of the Swiss NLA today, requires waivers in order to be assigned to the NHL or AHL level. Usually a formality for signing players, it’s extremely unlikely that anyone would put in a claim on the diminutive forward.

Nathan Gerbe Signs With Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Nathan Gerbe to a one-year, two-way deal. Gerbe will need to clear waivers to sign with the club, usually a formality in these situations. No financial details were released at this point.

Gerbe, 30, hasn’t played in the NHL since 2015-16, instead spending the last two seasons in the Swiss NLA. The forward, known most for his small stature (he stands 5’4″) scored seven points in 47 games for the Carolina Hurricanes during his last tour in the league, but does have a pair of 16-goal seasons on his resume. Despite the usual stereotype about small players being pure skill, Gerbe actually brings a bit of grit and toughness to the game. Willing to throw his body around and dig in the corners, he’s never shied away from the physical side of the game.

The Blue Jackets yesterday sent Brandon Dubinsky away from the club, either for another examination of his eye, or according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required) something more disciplinary in nature. Even before the loss of Dubinsky to a fractured orbital bone the team has been thin at forward for much of the season. Though Gerbe doesn’t represent much upside, he could give them some veteran depth at either the NHL or AHL level and be a useful piece if he can show that he’s still able to compete in the North American game.

Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire Jeff Zatkoff

After trading away one minor league contract earlier today, the Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired another. The team has acquired goaltender Jeff Zatkoff from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for future considerations.

With Jack Campbell and Cal Petersen splitting the net for the Ontario Reign of the AHL, Zatkoff hasn’t actually played in a single game this season. It’s not entirely clear where he’ll fit into the AHL picture for Columbus either, though they’ve experienced struggles from all of their goaltenders this season for the Cleveland Monsters.

Zatkoff of course brings with him plenty of experience, as the 30-year old has 48 games under his belt in the NHL including 13 last season with the Kings. A third-round pick in 2006, he has repeatedly put up healthy save percentages in the minor leagues and could provide some stability in Cleveland.

The goaltender pushes Columbus back up to 46/50 contract slots filled, and actually will cost them a relatively large amount of money to play in the minor leagues this season. Zatkoff is in the second year of a two-year, one-way contract that earns him $900K regardless of whether he’s in the NHL or minor leagues.

John Ramage Traded To Arizona Coyotes

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded minor league defenseman John Ramage to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for future considerations, giving some veteran experience to the Tucson Roadrunners. Ramage hasn’t seen any NHL action since the 2015-16 season, and has just two games under his belt in his career.

A fourth-round pick of the Calgary Flames in 2010, Ramage was a top amateur player in the US Development Program, winning a gold medal with the 2010 World Junior squad before returning as captain a year later. He also would have a “C” sewed into his sweater at the University of Wisconsin, where he played for four years. In the minor leagues, Ramage has taken home a Kelly and Calder Cup as champion of the ECHL and AHL, continuing his winning streak at nearly every level.

The Flames would eventually allow him to go to free agency without a qualifying offer and after just a single NHL game, at which point the defenseman signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He’ll now head to the desert to join the Arizona organization, where he’ll hope to get his first real crack at the NHL in the coming months. In the last season of a two-year deal, he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Blue Jackets Recall Markus Hannikainen And Dean Kukan

  • The Blue Jackets announced via Twitter that they have recalled winger Markus Hannikainen as well as defenseman Dean Kukan from AHL Cleveland.  Hannikainen has spent most of the season with Columbus but had been sent down on Thursday to get into a minor league game last night.  As for Kukan, he has been up with the team on three other occasions already this season but has yet to play an NHL game in 2017-18.  He is their top scoring defender in the minors though with 15 points in 31 games.

Ryan Murray Leaves Practice After Just One Drill

While the Blue Jackets weren’t expecting to be without defenseman Ryan Murray for too long after he suffered a back injury in late November, he still has yet to play and Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that it may be a while yet before he returns.  He tried to take part in practice on Wednesday but made it through just one drill before leaving the ice which is never a good sign.

Not only is that an important loss that Columbus will continue to have to work through but this may also have implications on what happens with Jack Johnson.  While he’s not denying his trade request, the Blue Jackets may be in tough to grant it if it looks like Murray won’t be back for a while yet.  At any rate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see GM Jarmo Kekalainen on the look for defensive depth between now and the trade deadline.

Jack Johnson’s not hiding the fact that he asked for a trade in November, but he wanted to make it clear that he’s nowhere near quitting on the Columbus Blue Jackets. In an excellent piece by Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required), Johnson goes into detail on how he would love to stay with his current club, but is just trying to do what is best for his career and family:

This isn’t a situation that’s normal. Most people, when stuff like this happens, it’s because they don’t want to be where they’re at, or they’re not happy with the team, the city, the coaches, whatever. I’m not … this isn’t a case of any of that.

Johnson is perhaps more concerned with future paydays than the average NHL veteran because of the public bankruptcy he had to file in 2014 thanks to debt his parents created in his name. Still, Johnson only wants to show he’s capable of contributing to a winning lineup, and he’ll get that chance tomorrow night against the Dallas Stars when he’s reunited with David Savard on the team’s second defense pairing. Though he remains a possibility for trade, Portzline perhaps put it best on Twitter when asked if Johnson could play his way into a contract: “rule out nothing.”
