Seth Jarvis To Make NHL Debut; Nino Niederreiter Out

October 31, 2021 at 9:43 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Despite putting up 11 points in nine games for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL last season, Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis was not eligible to return to the minor leagues this time around. He’s still just 19, and given he didn’t cross the 20-game threshold to secure a one-time AHL exemption like some other prospects, if he failed to make the Hurricanes he would have to return to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.

At the end of training camp, the team did not send Jarvis back, but also didn’t put him in the NHL lineup. The Hurricanes have played in seven games (and won them all); Jarvis has played in none.

That will change this afternoon when the young forward enters the lineup for his NHL debut. After Nino Niederreiter suffered a lower-body injury on Friday night, the Hurricanes have confirmed that Jarvis comes in against the Arizona Coyotes. Niederreiter is expected to be out a few weeks with the ankle injury, a big blow for a player that was off to a nice start to the season. With three goals already, the 29-year-old was well on his way to another 20-goal campaign, a level he returned to in 2020-21 after a disappointing performance the year prior.

Selected 13th overall in 2020, Jarvis has already shown he can dominate the junior ranks and has little to prove with the Winterhawks. He even showed he could be an electric presence at the AHL level with seven goals in nine games last season, and was a highlight reel every night in the preseason. Whether that huge offensive upside lends itself to real NHL action right away remains to be seen, but he’ll get a chance this afternoon.

Of note, like with any prospect his age, is that Jarvis’ entry-level contract will not kick in until he plays in ten games this season. Should he hit that threshold, the first year will be burned and he will become a restricted free agent in 2024. If he plays fewer, that RFA summer would become 2025.

Brind'Amour: Niederreiter Could Be "Out For A While"

October 30, 2021 at 9:41 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Hurricanes had plenty to be happy about on Friday night as they ran their winning streak to seven straight to start the season but it wasn’t all good news as Nino Niederreiter suffered a lower-body injury in the third period.  Speaking with reporters including Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer postgame, head coach Rod Brind’Amour indicated that the winger could be “out for a while”.  Niederreiter, a five-time 20-goal scorer, was off to a decent start this season with three tallies in his first seven games and with this being a contract year, any extended absence certainly won’t help his cause when it’s time to work out a new agreement.  In the meantime, Niederreiter’s injury could open up a spot for Seth Jarvis to make his NHL debut.

Minor Transactions: 10/19/21

October 19, 2021 at 6:59 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

While a long list of NHL games caps off this Tuesday night, there was a lot of movement at lower levels of the North American hockey depth chart today. As NHL teams deal with a trend of injuries across the league, it carries a ripple effect across both the AHL and ECHL, forcing roster moves. Here are today’s minor transactions:

  • The AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders, affiliate of New York, have recalled forward Erik Brown from the ECHL’s Worcester Railers, per the Connecticut Post’s Michael Fornabaio. Brown has been a fringe AHL player since ending his collegiate career with the Rochester Institute of Technology, but the 26-year-old logged his first AHL point, an assist, in 13 games last year with Bridgeport. It was his first full professional season after missing the entirety of 2019-20.
  • The Chicago Wolves assigned goalie Beck Warm to the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals today. Warm, who’s on a two-way NHL deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, will make his ECHL debut if he stays but already has one full professional season under his belt. An undrafted free agent, Warm impressed in 14 AHL games with Chicago last year, posting an 8-4-1 record and .914 save percentage. He’s been forced down the depth chart with the addition of NHL-experienced Alex Lyon into the organization as the team’s third goalie, however, and he could take a starting role in Norfolk.
  • The St. Louis Blues’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, assigned forward Shawn Cameron to the ECHL’s Greenville Swamp Rabbits, per the ECHL’s transaction page for October 19. Cameron split last season between Greenville and the AHL’s Utica Comets, where he scored three points (including his first AHL goal) in 11 games. He fared much better in Greenville, notching 10 points in 23 games.

Despite IR Placement, Hurricanes Optimistic Trocheck Will Play In Season Opener

October 11, 2021 at 6:29 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

  • While Carolina placed center Vincent Trocheck on IR over the weekend, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes’ team site notes (Twitter link) that the team remains optimistic that he will be available for their season-opener against the Islanders on Thursday. Trocheck had 43 points in 47 games last season while primarily playing on Carolina’s second line, a role he’s likely to reprise in 2021-22.

Waddell: Hurricanes Plan To Talk Extension With Vincent Trocheck

October 9, 2021 at 12:41 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

  • While the Hurricanes haven’t yet started extension discussions with Vincent Trocheck, GM Don Waddell told John Matisz of The Score that they do intend to sit down at some point to try to work out a long-term deal. Trocheck’s first ‘full’ season in Carolina was a strong one as he notched 43 points in 47 games last season so it’s understandable that they’d want to keep him around.  However, youngsters Martin Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi – both natural centers – are in need of new deals as well next summer and it’s possible that they could view one of them as a replacement for Trocheck if his asking price gets too high.  He has a $4.75MM AAV this season and should be getting more than that on his next deal.

Seth Jarvis Could Receive A Nine-Game Look With Carolina

October 2, 2021 at 10:47 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

  • With the Hurricanes not being able to send top prospect Seth Jarvis to the AHL due to his age, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer suggests that Carolina may opt to keep him with the big club to start the season. The 19-year-old could play up to nine NHL games before the first year of his entry-level deal would kick in while he wouldn’t accrue a season towards UFA eligibility until he was on the roster for 40 games.  Going that route would allow them a bit more time to evaluate Jarvis’ readiness although the likeliest outcome at this time is an eventual return to Portland in the WHL which isn’t great from a development perspective considering how productive he has been there the last two years.

Minor Transactions: 10/1/21

October 1, 2021 at 11:42 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With minor league camps about to get underway, there will be an influx of players inking tryout deals at the lower levels.  We’ll keep track of those moves here along with any other smaller moves of note.

  • Hurricanes prospect Patrik Puistola is staying in Finland as Jukurit of the SM-liiga announced that they’ve added the winger and signed him to a two-year contract. The 20-year-old was a third-round pick of Carolina back in 2019 (73rd overall) and had 14 points in 50 games with JYP last season in his first full year at the professional level.  This contract takes Puistola to the end of Carolina’s four-year period where they hold his rights so they will need to sign him at that time or lose him to free agency.
  • The Canadiens have signed goalie Alex Dubeau to an AHL camp tryout, his agent Nicola Riopel announced (Twitter link). The 27-year-old spent last season in Washington’s system, playing in 26 games with South Carolina of the ECHL.
  • While many teams are trimming their training camp rosters, the Ducks are adding to theirs, announcing the additions of winger Morgan Adams-Moisan and goaltender Frank Marotte to their camp roster.  Adams-Moisan had 14 points and 123 penalty minutes in 37 games with Fort Wayne of the ECHL last season while Marotte posted a .917 SV% in a dozen contests with Allen of the ECHL last year while making two appearances with Bridgeport of the AHL.

Seth Jarvis Listed As Day-To-Day

September 26, 2021 at 7:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

  • Hurricanes winger prospect Seth Jarvis is day-to-day with a tweak, head coach Rod Brind’Amour told Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal. The 19-year-old had 11 points in nine games with AHL Chicago and 27 more in 24 contests with WHL Portland last season and has a legitimate chance to break camp with the big club.  If that doesn’t happen, he will have to return to the junior level.
