East Notes: Panthers, Budaj, Murray, Gostisbehere

January 13, 2018 at 11:40 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Although the Panthers find themselves within striking distance of a playoff spot, don’t expect them to turn to the rental market to try to add someone to help make that push.  Speaking with reporters (video via the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel), GM Dale Tallon stated that they’re only going to be making a move if they can get someone who fits in long-term and that they have identified several targets around the league that could fit that bill.  This represents a shift from last year when they picked up Thomas Vanek from Detroit as a rental on deadline day in a move that did little to help their postseason aspirations.

Elsewhere in the East:

  • Lightning goaltender Peter Budaj will be out for a while yet. GM Steve Yzerman told Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link) that Budaj’s leg injury will keep him out for six-to-eight weeks from December 29th, the day he was hurt.  That means he will be out for the next month at a minimum so Louis Domingue will be sticking around as Andrei Vasilevskiy’s backup for the foreseeable future following their bye.
  • Pittsburgh’s recall of goaltender Casey DeSmith yesterday wasn’t due to an injury. Jonathan Bombulie of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review notes that netminder Matt Murray is away from the team due to personal reasons.  There’s no word on when he will return to the Penguins.  Tristan Jarry will get the extra workload in Murray’s absence.
  • Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere isn’t expected to play tonight due to an illness, notes Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post (Twitter link).  His absence is a big one for Philadelphia as he sits fourth in team scoring with 32 points in 39 games while logging nearly 21 minutes a night of playing time.  Travis Sanheim is slated to take his place in the lineup.

Defense Notes: Phaneuf, Mueller, Methot

January 13, 2018 at 10:26 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While he has a sizable contract, there has been some chatter about Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf being dealt before the trade deadline, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.  The 32-year-old  veteran is in his third season with Ottawa and while he plays an important role on their back end, he hasn’t been living up to his $7MM cap hit and has actually seen his average ice time dip by 2:30 a night to 20:32, the lowest of his career.  With three years left on his deal beyond this one, Ottawa would almost certainly have to retain some salary or take a high-priced player back in any trade.  Phaneuf has a 12-team list that he can be traded to.

More news regarding blueliners around the league:

  • Devils defenseman Mirco Mueller skated at practice for the first time since undergoing surgery to fix a broken clavicle, notes Chris Ryan of NJ Advance Media. While he will still need several more practices before getting the green light to return, it appears he will be returning well ahead of schedule; originally, he was pegged to be out until sometime around the middle of February.  Prior to being injured, Mueller was playing a regular role on New Jersey’s third pairing but there’s no guarantee he’ll return in that spot with seven other blueliners already on the roster.
  • So much for being ready to play after the bye week. Although that was the original intention for Stars rearguard Marc Methot, the team announced that he has undergone a non-surgical procedure that will keep him out of the lineup for the next two weeks.  Methot’s first season in Dallas has been a rough one as he has played just once since November 6th where he first suffered his knee injury.  He returned to play one game and then was scratched with soreness for the next one.  That’s not what they were hoping for when they acquired him from Vegas after the Expansion Draft to shore up their top-four.

Jack Johnson Asks To Be Traded

January 13, 2018 at 7:55 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 7 Comments

Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson has requested a trade, reports Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required).  Portzline adds that the ask was made several weeks ago with the hopes that a deal could be worked out before the trade deadline next month.  Johnson and his agent Pat Brisson declined to comment while GM Jarmo Kekalainen had a brief comment to George Richards of the Columbus Dispatch (Twitter link).

“It’s the same with him as anyone else on our team: We’ll make a trade if and when we have something that makes sense for the Blue Jackets.”

Jan 2, 2018; Dallas, TX, USA; Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson (7) skates against the Dallas Stars during the game at the American Airlines Center. The Blue Jackets defeat the Stars 2-1. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsThis season hasn’t gone as well Johnson was hoping for.  After failing to agree on a long-term extension over the summer (talks cooled down back in August), he has seen his role reduced and now finds himself on the third pairing.  He’s averaging a career-low 19:24 per game while he’s on pace for his lowest full-season point total since his rookie campaign back in 2007-08 with the Kings; he has just two goals and five assists in 46 games so far.

Portzline notes that Johnson isn’t unhappy with the team and that if he was still under contract beyond this season, the request wouldn’t have been made.  However, with this being his walk year into unrestricted free agency, he wants to be in the best position to cash in on the open market.

As things stand, it would appear that Johnson will be in tough to match the $5MM salary ($4.357MM cap hit) that he’s currently making.  However, a bigger role on another team could give him the chance to show that he can still be a quality top-four defender.

If Columbus was to consider granting Johnson his request, it’s likely that they would be seeking another defenseman in return.  They’re carrying just six healthy blueliners at the moment with Ryan Murray on injured reserve and while the team has high hopes for youngster Gabriel Carlsson, he isn’t ready for full-time NHL duty just yet.

Red Wings Notes: Howard, Larkin, Holland

January 12, 2018 at 7:43 pm CDT | by natebrown 3 Comments

MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard is slated to return for Saturday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Howard was shelved with a lower body injury but Detroit’s bye week was a fortuitous opportunity for the veteran net minder to recover. Howard told DetroitRedWings.com’s Dana Wakiji that he’ll be ready for tomorrow’s game. In his last six starts, Howard has been 4-2 with a .952 save percentage, and a main reason the Red Wings have seen their fortunes trend up. Though they’re still out of the playoff hunt (and will stay that way most likely), Howard has been excellent for a team short on defense and elite talent.

  • Khan takes questions in a mailbag next, indicating that he doesn’t expect any hitches as they did when Andreas Athanasiou held out as an RFA. Khan continues, writing that the Red Wings have $10MM  with Mike Green and Petr Mrazek set to be free agents. With the cap rising as well, Khan doesn’t foresee any issues getting the important younger players, namely Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Athanasiou. Martin Frk and Tyler Bertuzzi are both in their final year of a contract but will come at a lower price than the aforementioned three.
  • In another question, Khan writes that Henrik Zetterberg might have one season left before a new captain will have to be named. He sees Justin Abdelkader being the next Red Wing to wear the C while Larkin a future captain as well. Larkin was an alternate captain while playing in the World Juniors last May, but it wouldn’t be crazy to think that Larkin could be the next in line. Steve Yzerman was named captain at the ripe old age of 21, which just happens to be Larkin’s current age.
  • The Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James has a mailbag of her own, and gives her thoughts on the future of general manager Ken Holland. She believes he will still be around, either in the GM chair or as an adviser. She also believes that Larkin will be the first of the three young building blocks (Larkin-Mantha-Athanasiou) to be re-signed by Detroit.

Snapshots: van Riemsdyk, Hutchinson, Dal Colle

January 12, 2018 at 6:09 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Expect James van Riemsdyk to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs all season. That’s what TSN’s Darren Dreger writes in his latest column, positing that he and fellow pending unrestricted free agents Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov, are best used as “own rentals” for the playoff push.

While there are some big numbers floating around for any potential van Riemsdyk extension, he’s continued to play an important role on the Maple Leafs, tying Auston Matthews for first on the team in goals with 19.

  • The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Michael Hutchinson from the AHL for tonight’s game, explaining that Steve Mason has fallen ill and can’t back up Connor Hellebuyck. To make room, the team has placed Adam Lowry on injured reserve. Hutchinson is an extremely interesting goaltender to keep an eye on this year, as he’s headed for unrestricted free agency in the summer. Though he’s stuck in the minor leagues this season due to Mason’s signing, the 27-year old has dominated the AHL with a .942 save percentage and could land an NHL job in the summer. In 99 career NHL games he does hold a .910 save percentage, and could be an excellent backup option.
  • New York Islanders head coach Doug Weight has confirmed that Michael Dal Colle will make his NHL debut tomorrow, the second-last player to do so from the first round of the 2014 draft. Only Connor Bleackley, who never signed with the Colorado Avalanche and re-entered the draft in 2016 (going in the fifth round), is left. Dal Colle was selected fifth overall, and still has some real upside to his game, but will have to quickly prove that he’s ready to take the next step.

Midseason Poll: Will John Tavares Re-Sign In New York?

January 12, 2018 at 4:31 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

In July, we asked out readers to take a look ahead at the free agent class of 2018 and determine who would be the very best option available. The instructions were to decide who was the best player, among those who would actually make it to free agency.

At that point, just a few weeks after the 2017 free agent frenzy had occurred, almost 66% of our readers picked John Tavares, believing he’d make it to the open market.

Has that changed with the knowledge that the Islanders will have a new home at Belmont Park within the next few years? Is Tavares going to re-sign with the only franchise he’s ever known?

Obviously, none of us can know for sure until Tavares signs a contract making him one of the highest paid players in the league, or July 1st rolls around. But, where does your confidence lie at this point? Vote below and explain what you think will play out over the next few months.

Victor Hedman Out Three To Six Weeks

January 12, 2018 at 2:49 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After leaving last night’s game with an apparent lower-body injury, the Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that All-Star defenseman Victor Hedman will be out for three to six weeks. That’s a huge blow for the Lightning, who use Hedman in all situations for nearly 26 minutes of ice time a night. Still, it’s a better diagnosis than some were expecting since the damage appeared to be to his knee.

As we wrote recently, even before Hedman’s injury one of the places the Lightning could get better was the back half of their defense corps. Now with his injury, that group will be tested more than ever to try and keep the club at the very top of the Eastern Conference. In Hedman’s absence last night, Jake Dotchin led the club with almost 23 minutes (which didn’t include even a second of powerplay time), easily his highest mark of the season. It’s not clear how the team will cope with the loss of Hedman, but Dotchin and young Mikhail Sergachev will likely be leaned on even more than they had been.

The team does have the left-handed Slater Koekkoek waiting in the wings, but he’s never shown an ability to take on much of a lead role for the club. Instead, the team could go out and make an addition with the assets we’ve outlined previously. While a three week absence would have Hedman missing just seven games, there’s no telling how long it will take him to get back to full strength. The team already had some question marks on the bottom pair, and could use this as another reason to improve their defense corps through trade.

For another player in the Atlantic it provides a different opportunity. Hedman was ticketed to represent the Lightning at home during the upcoming All-Star weekend, meaning someone like Morgan Rielly, Torey Krug, Charlie McAvoy, or Keith Yandle could be selected to replace him.  While it’s unfortunate that Hedman won’t be able to participate in front of his home crowd, but Tampa Bay fans are just pleased it’s not something more long-term.

Andrew Cogliano Signs Three-Year Extension

January 12, 2018 at 1:21 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks have locked up one of their key contributors, signing Andrew Cogliano to a three-year extension through the 2020-21 season at an annual average salary of $3.25MM. Cogliano has suited up for all 43 games for the Ducks this season, extending his incredible streak to 829 games (his entire career in fact) without missing a single contest. The deal includes no signing bonuses, and gives him both no-trade protection for the rest of this season and a partial no-trade clause for the next three years.

Andrew CoglianoCogliano, 30, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and could have been a much sought-after player. Though his offensive upside is somewhat limited, he’s shown an ability to move up and down a lineup and has long been one of the top penalty killers in the league. Since entering the league in 2007-08, he ranks seventh in the league in shorthanded goals with 17. With the injuries to several key forwards for the Ducks this year, he’s actually recorded the second highest average time on ice of his career, and the most since coming over to Anaheim from the Edmonton Oilers in 2011.

Limited to just five goals this season, there is reason to believe that he’s been more unlucky than ever. His shooting percentage is at a career-low of 5.3%, despite him being on pace to record the second most shots on goal of his career. While no one will crown him a 30-goal player, an expectation of 12-18 goals and 30-35 points is still realistic going forward. Whether his body will eventually betray him is still to be seen, but you can’t get a more consistent player to invest in.

For the Ducks, a $3.25MM cap hit is more than palatable. Cogliano was already earning $3MM this season, and with Kevin Bieksa’s contract coming off the books at the end of the season there is more than enough to go around. While the team does need to extend Nick Ritchie and Ondrej Kase, neither should demand a prohibitive cap hit going forward. Brandon Montour will need a new deal, but after just 68 career games so far he certainly could be signed on a smaller bridge deal.

Any problems, if they are to come, would be the summer of 2019 when the Ducks are scheduled to have Jakob Silfverberg (UFA), Adam Henrique (UFA) and John Gibson (RFA) all hitting free agency at the same time. With Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler, Patrick Eaves and now Cogliano all in their thirties and signed through at least the 2019-20 season, things might get dicey when trying to fill out the rest of the roster.

Still, with the salary cap going up and Eaves’ unclear future coming back from Guillain-Barre Syndrome , Cogliano’s contract was almost must-sign for the club. He may have been able to fetch even more on the open market if a few bounces go his way in the second half, and his impact would have been difficult to replace internally. With the 2018 free agent class getting thinner with every extension, it will be interesting to see where the rental market finally lands at the end of next month.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic was first with the details of the contract, including salary breakdown and trade protection.

Carolina Hurricanes Introduce Thomas Dundon As Majority Owner

January 12, 2018 at 12:31 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The sale of the Carolina Hurricanes has become official, with Thomas Dundon taking over a majority stake in the franchise. While former owner Peter Karmanos retains a minority stake for the time being, Dundon was introduced to the media today and has already promised to improve several aspects of the team. Just after the press conference with Karmanos and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, the team released a letter from Dundon to fans:

As the opportunity arose to become the majority owner of the Carolina Hurricanes and I began analyzing the organization, the one thing that immediately jumped out to me was that with the collection of young talent already on the team, we can compete now.

As I spoke to people from across the NHL, they all identified that core of young players, the head coach and the general manager as major assets. I am convinced that the Hurricanes not only have an opportunity to win now, but to be competitive year in and year out going forward.

In the recent months, I’ve spent a lot of time around the team, and we’ve worked to identify areas to better support our athletes and help improve our on-ice performance. Among the changes we can act on immediately will be adding resources for our training and analytical staffs, as well as finalizing a deal for a new state-of-the-art training facility for our athletes.

I’ve also been working closely with the team’s business staff, to increase the entertainment value for our fans at every game. We’ve developed many great ideas and we’re going to be extremely aggressive in our efforts to enhance the in-arena experience. I want PNC Arena to be absolutely rocking every night — a place you love to watch a game, our players love to play a game and our opponents fear.

In only a few months, I’ve quickly realized how much passion there is in this market for this team, and I take very seriously the responsibility to ensure that this community has the team and entertainment experience it deserves. I recognize and share the expectations you have for the Hurricanes, as well as the fact that we have not always met them. My commitment is to meet and exceed your expectations, and that starts now.

While any new owner of a sports franchise says similar things upon taking the reins, here are some things that can be sussed out of his statement. First and foremost, it seems as though Dundon has no intention on changing the roles of either GM Ron Francis or head coach Bill Peters. Both, as he states, are major assets for the club and have proven it recently with the team acquiring plenty of talent and finally competing in the cutthroat Metropolitan Division.

The Hurricanes sit at 20-15-8 on the season, just five points out of second place in the division and ahead of schedule in terms of their young players. The team is set up for several years of success with their young core, though overcoming the rest of the Metro will be as difficult as ever.

Dundon also seems committed to increasing the analytical and sports science programs for the Hurricanes, something that more and more clubs around the league are moving towards. Though obviously there is no clear indication on what impact any changes would have, fans should be impressed with the immediate involvement that Dundon wants to make.

At the press conference, which Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer reported live from on Twitter, Bettman stated that an outdoor game in Carolina is “not out of the question” and that Dundon had already asked about it. Carter-Finley Stadium, home of the NC State football team, is directly across the street from PNC Arena where the Hurricanes play and could be a potential venue for an outdoor game in the future.

Morning Notes: Maple Leafs, Hoffman, Lockwood

January 12, 2018 at 11:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in their bye week after a pair of one-goal losses, and though the points totals say they’re tied with the Boston Bruins for second in the Atlantic Division, they actually trail behind. That’s because Toronto has played five more games than the Bruins, who are tied for the fewest GP so far in the league. As the Maple Leafs rest up from a grueling first half, GM Lou Lamoriello spoke with Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun and discussed a potential deadline trade:

I certainly like our roster. I think it’s solid. We’ll have to wait and see what is transpiring, but you’re never good enough.

To do something for the sake of doing something is never a good thing. You don’t even want to use the word ‘substantial.’ Sometimes the smallest things become the biggest.

Lamoriello has maintained his position all along that he’ll only make a trade to improve the club if something presents itself, and isn’t out there knocking down doors to improve the Maple Leafs defense corps. While it does sound like there may be some minor tweaks out of Toronto as we head closer to the deadline, a major move might not be in the cards.

  • Lamoriello’s contemporary from Ottawa however could be barking up a very different tree. Darren Dreger joined TSN 1200 radio yesterday to discuss several Senators topics, including the potential trade of Mike Hoffman. Dreger reported that the market is strong for Hoffman, mentioning teams like St. Louis, Edmonton and Calgary as potential destinations. Hoffman has 29 points on the season but has recently found quite a bit of chemistry with Matt Duchene. Whether that duo is broken up is still to be seen, but the Senators will likely try to wait as long as possible to make a decision.
  • Unfortunately, for another Canadian team, it’s surgery for one of their top prospects. Vancouver Canucks prospect Will Lockwood, who injured his shoulder in the World Juniors for Team USA, is set to have surgery according to Rick Dhaliwal of NEWS 1130. Utica Comets GM Ryan Johnson told Dhaliwal that Lockwood would have the surgery in two weeks, and be out around six months. That’s a tough break for the University of Michigan, where Lockwood was having another strong season. He’ll have to make a decision on whether or not to turn pro after the season is over.
