Minor Transactions: 02/18/19

The NHL is back with six games tonight including a inter-conference matchup between the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks. Both teams are in the hunt for second place in the league—though still well behind the leading Tampa Bay Lightning—and are trying to secure home ice advantage in the playoffs. Boston especially has been playing well, unbeaten in regulation through their previous ten games. As teams prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves around the league.

  • Though the transaction appears to have technically happened this weekend, Ryan Spooner is now listed on the Vancouver Canucks roster and will report to the NHL club. The forward was acquired on Saturday from the Edmonton Oilers organization where he had been playing in the minor leagues. Spooner will try to show that he can still compete at the highest level and find a fit in Vancouver’s top nine.
  • Christian Dvorak has been officially added to the Tucson Roadrunners roster in order to begin his conditioning loan. The young forward has been out all season with injury but is attempting a late-season return to the Arizona Coyotes lineup. He’ll have to prove his health at the minor league level first while getting in some game action.
  • Meanwhile Steven Kampfer’s conditioning loan has come to an end after the Bruins recalled the defenseman today. Kampfer has played in just 25 games with the Bruins this year and none since before Christmas.
  • Dylan Gambrell has been sent back to the minor leagues by the San Jose Sharks, something they often do between games to save a bit of cap space. The 22-year old has played just six games with the Sharks this season, and is still looking for his first NHL point.
  • The Minnesota Wild have send Kyle Rau down to the AHL, assigning him to the Iowa Wild for the time being. Rau played in six games on his recent recall, recording one point. The 26-year old forward is a big part of Iowa’s offensive attack, sitting third on the team in scoring with 30 points in 45 games.  The team announced that veteran center Cal O’Reilly has been recalld to take his place.

Yesterday saw the Hurricanes move into the Eastern playoff picture at the expense of the Penguins, the Bruins pass the Maple Leafs in the Atlantic, and the Blues win their ninth straight as they pull away from the Western wild card race entirely. With another six games on the docket today, featuring eight teams still jockeying for playoff position, we could see more movement in the standings. Meanwhile, there will definitely be some movement across NHL rosters, as teams prepare for the week ahead. Keep up with all the action here:

  • The Vancouver Canucks recalled a newly-acquired player before last night’s game, but it wasn’t Ryan Spooner. Luke Schenn, acquired in the Michael Del Zotto trade in January, was given his first Canucks promotion the team announced, although he did not suit up last night. The veteran blue liner has played well since joining the AHL’s Utica Comets and the Canucks could use some solid play on the back end while dealing with several injuries.
  • The Ottawa Senators announced the return of young goaltender Filip Gustavsson to the AHL, as well as veteran forward Darren Archibald, who has become a fixture of the team’s the daily transactions. Gustavsson, 20, was given his first recall on Tuesday to serve as the backup to Anders Nilsson while Craig Anderson was sidelined. Gustavsson did not see any action and will now head back to the Belleville Senators. Meanwhile, his reassignment implies that Anderson has been cleared to return to action.
  • CapFriendly reports the Colorado Avalanche have sent Sheldon Dries and Dominic Toninato back to the minors. Dries has skated in three times as many games with the Avs this season than the AHL’s Colorado Eagles and has never been down for too long, whereas Toninato has only gotten into two NHL games as opposed to 37 AHL games and has been more productive at the lower level. Neither player has been any help in solving the Avalanche’s secondary scoring problem, so for now they’ll get some work in with the Eagles. BSN Denver’s Adrian Dater reports the Avalanche have recalled Andrew Agozzino. The 28-year-old veteran hasn’t played an NHL game since the 2015-16 season. He currently has 22 goals and 50 points in 48 games with the Eagles.
  • No sooner than he was called up is Tucker Poolman being sent back down. The Winnipeg Jets announced that the 25-year-old defenseman has been reassigned to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose after he was recalled just yesterday, only to watch the Jets’ game from the press box. Poolman has yet to play in the NHL this season after getting into 24 contests last year. Poolman is signed for two more years and is hoping to earn a role in Winnipeg sooner rather than later.
  • The Athletic’s George Richards relays from head coach Bob Boughner that the Florida Panthers have placed Roberto Luongo on the bereavement list due to a death in the family. He will be unavailable through at least tonight’s game. As such, the team will call up young Samuel Montembeault from the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds to back up James Reimer for the time being. The team has since confirmed the move.
  • Casey Nelson has finished his own conditioning stint and has been recalled by the Buffalo Sabres, the team announced. Nelson has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since early December, but after a five-game stint with the AHL’s Rochester Americans he looks ready for a return.
  • The Arizona Coyotes announced they have recalled Michael Bunting from the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL just a two days after the team put him on waivers and sent him to the AHL. The 23-year-old Bunting has appeared in just five games for Arizona, but has flashed some potential in Tucson as he has posted 11 goals and 27 points in 31 games.
  • The St. Louis Blues announced they have assigned forward Sammy Blais to the San Antonio Rampage after being recalled Saturday. He was recalled to fill in as an emergency forward for Sunday’s game. He didn’t play and now will return to San Antonio. Blais has 18 points in 25 games for the Rampage.

Eastern Notes: Talbot, Skinner, Mittelstadt, Gagner

The Philadelphia Flyers made a big trade late Friday when they sent current backup Anthony Stolarz to Edmonton in exchange for veteran goaltender Cam Talbot. The team hopes that Talbot can provide rookie Carter Hart with some guidance and help Hart’s transition to the NHL. The only problem is that Talbot will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and the team has to decide make sure they can lock up Talbot for the future.

Sam Carchidi of Philly.com writes that he spoke to Talbot who said that he choose to come to Philadelphia for a chance of a long-term stay and is open to signing an extension with the Flyers before July 1. Carchidi adds that Talbot said  it was a “tough season” in Edmonton and is looking for a fresh start with the Flyers and wants to take on the mentor role for Hart, who he is already familiar with.

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News cautions fans to be patient when it comes to the Buffalo Sabres re-signing winger Jeff Skinner. The 26-year-old is one goal shy of his career-high of 37 goals and looks to have taken his game to another level. Unfortunately for Buffalo, Skinner has yet to sign an extension, which worries fans, especially now that the team is struggling. However, Harrington writes that the fact that Buffalo is falling out of the playoff picture will have no impact on Skinner’s decision. He wants to be in Buffalo and has told his agent that as well. He’s two hours from his home in Toronto and loves it in Buffalo next to Jack Eichel.
  • Sticking with Buffalo, Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News reports that rookie center Casey Mittelstadt is expected to return to the lineup Sunday after missing the last two games with a lower-body injury. The 20-year-old Mittelstadt has eight goals and 19 points so far this season, but has been holding down the second-line center position for much of the season. although a pending return of Kyle Okposo could bump him to the third line.
  • One loser of the Ryan Spooner for Sam Gagner trade earlier today between the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers are the Toronto Marlies, according to the Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran. The AHL franchise, who is coming off a Calder Cup Championship last year, is trying hard to repeat and had the good fortune that Vancouver was willing to accommodate Gagner, who wanted to stay close to home in Toronto if he wasn’t going to play in the NHL. Vancouver opted to loan Gagner to the Marlies where he was the team’s second-line center. The trade takes a way a key veteran player for their run, who had posted 12 goals and 37 points in 43 games.

Oilers Acquire Sam Gagner From Canucks For Ryan Spooner

The Oilers and Canucks have swapped underachieving forwards with Edmonton acquiring center Sam Gagner from Vancouver in exchange for forward Ryan Spooner.  Both teams have announced the move.  It’s the second trade in less than 24 hours for interim Oilers GM Keith Gretzky after shipping goalie Cam Talbot to Philadelphia.

Despite playing a regular role with Vancouver last year that saw him record a respectable 31 points in 74 games, Gagner was somewhat surprisingly waived at the beginning of the season and has spent the majority of 2018-19 at the minor league level on loan with Toronto’s AHL affiliate.  The 29-year-old has been productive with the Marlies, posting 12 goals and 25 assists in just 43 games and didn’t fare particularly poorly in a seven-game stint with the Canucks earlier in the year where he picked up three points while averaging over 18 minutes per night.

Meanwhile, this season has been a disastrous one for Spooner.  He was able to parlay a strong showing the Rangers last season into a two-year, $8MM deal but things went off the rails early.  After being largely a non-factor in New York through 16 games, he was dealt to Edmonton in a one-for-one swap for Ryan Strome where he proceeded to struggle even more.  Eventually, the Oilers had enough, sending him through waivers late last month.  On the season, he has just five points in 41 NHL games but has been better with AHL Bakersfield, picking up six points in seven contests.

Gagner is also signed through next season and the cap hits are nearly identical.  Gagner’s cap hit is at $3.15MM while Spooner is costing Edmonton $3.1MM with the Rangers kicking in the other $900K so if a deal is done, the effects on the salary cap for both teams will be negligible.  TSN’s Bob McKenzie adds (Twitter link) that there is no salary retention on either side.  Both players could certainly benefit from a change of scenery and now will be getting that opportunity.  Notably, Gagner could be in the lineup for Edmonton tonight against the Islanders.

Canucks Unlikely To Pursue Rental Players

While the Canucks are presently holding down the final playoff spot in the West, don’t expect them to be chasing some rental players to help their postseason push.  In an interview with NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger, GM Jim Benning indicated that he’s not going to give up picks and young players for short-term fixes and will instead continue on their current path which has focused more on drafting and player development in recent years.  He did state that he feels that a playoff appearance would be great for their young core so even if they don’t pursue anyone on an expiring contract, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Vancouver looked to add someone that’s under team control beyond this season.

Minor Transactions: 2/16/19

As is often the case, Saturday is a busy day on the schedule with 24 teams in action which means there should be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • The Jets announced the recall of defenseman Sami Niku from AHL Manitoba. The 22-year-old has split the season between the NHL and AHL which has prevented him from really getting into a rhythm as of late.  He has a dozen points in 20 games with the Moose plus a pair of assists in 11 contests with Winnipeg so far this season.  With Joe Morrow suffering a lower-body injury that’s going to keep him out for two-to-three weeks, Niku, who has been part of trade speculation in recent weeks, may be in line for some more playing time.  In a separate move, the team has also promoted blueliner Tucker Poolman from Manitoba.  After playing 24 games with Winnipeg last year, he has yet to play with them this season while injuries have limited him to just 25 contests with the Moose.
  • Dallas is giving a look to the top goal scorer in the AHL as center Joel L’Esperance has been brought up from Texas (AHL) per a team release. The 23-year-old is in his first full professional season and has already scored 27 goals in just 49 games.  He signed with the Stars as an undrafted free agent last summer, a move that is certainly paying dividends already.  This will be L’Esperance’s first look at the NHL level.
  • The Islanders announced (Twitter link) that they have assigned winger Andrew Ladd and defenseman Thomas Hickey to Bridgeport of the AHL on conditioning stints. Ladd has been out for three months due to a leg injury while Hickey has been out of action with an upper-body issue for nearly two months.  GM Lou Lamoriello told reporters, including Newsday’s Andrew Gross (Twitter links) that both players have been transferred to LTIR today and are pegged to play two games with the Sound Tigers before re-evaluating their progress.
  • Defenseman Filip Hronek is back with the Red Wings after the team announced his promotion from AHL Grand Rapids.  The 21-year-old has been quite productive in limited action at the minor league level, collecting 23 points in 28 games.  He also has more than held his own with Detroit, logging over 18 minutes a night in 23 contests with the big club.
  • Injuries on the back end for the Kings have provided an opportunity for Matt Roy to get a look with the big club as the team announced that he has been brought up from Ontario (AHL).  Roy leads the Reign in scoring by a defenseman with 29 points in 45 games so far this season.  His recall was required with Alec Martinez and Sean Walker are out with upper-body injuries.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced they have assigned winger Kevin Roy to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The 25-year-old has been on season-opening injured reserve after undergoing offseason wrist surgery. Roy played 25 games for the Ducks last season, putting up six goals and seven points. He will attempt to find his game after a long layoff with the Gulls, where he scored 14 goals and 37 points last season.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers announced they have assigned forward Mikhail Vorobyev to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. The 22-year-old was recalled for a second stint with the team on Jan. 28, but has failed to produce offensively. He hasn’t register a point in eight games since that call-up. He has just one goal and two points in 15 games total this season, while receiving just 9:20 of ATOI.
  • Ed Willies of The Province reports that injured winger Jake Virtanen has been moved to injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Virtanen took a big hit from Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf Wednesday, missed Thursday’s game and had an MRI this morning, prompting the team to place him on IR. The team will use that open roster spot to put newly acquired forward Ryan Spooner on the ice. Head coach Travis Green said the injury is not concussion-related. He is expected to miss at least a week.
  • The St. Louis Blues announced they have placed defenseman Carl Gunnarsson on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The veteran defenseman has been out of the lineup since Feb. 5 and therefore can return whenever he is ready. The team has recalled forward Sammy Blais from the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. Blais has played 24 games for the Blues, but has just two goals and three points in that time.

Injury Notes: Koivu, Wilson, Tanev

Mikko Koivu’s season is over and it’s already had a massive impact on his team. However, the Minnesota Wild captain wants everyone to know that next year is not in doubt. The Associate Press report on Koivu’s major knee injury was actually overwhelmingly positive. Less than a week after reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL, Koivu said the following yesterday about his potential return for 2019-20 training camp:

 I’m totally confident… I think it’s about your effort, the way you take care of yourself on and off the ice, and at the end, it’s going to be a battle. But if you’re strong enough, you’re going to be able to do it… It’s a fact that this knee will be stronger than I’ve ever experienced. The rest of it is up to me.

The typical recovery time for this injury is six to nine months and especially for a soon-to-be-36-year-old, the latter end of that timeline seems more likely. However, Koivu has never given anyone a reason to doubt his dedication and work ethic, so his own optimism means a lot. Some thought that this could be a career-ending injury for the respected veteran; he merely sees it as a minor setback.

  • The Colorado Avalanche have all but confirmed that they won’t be major buyers at the trade deadline, but they might have a hard time being sellers too. The young team is not looking to move their long-term investments nor the players needed to win down the stretch and few good other rental options exist on the roster. The one player that does stand out as a valuable rental target is forward Colin Wilson, who has redeemed himself this season after an abysmal first year in Colorado. Wilson is a versatile, veteran forward who can be a major boost to a contender’s bottom-six. However, he’s also now on the injured reserve. CapFriendly reports that Wilson has been moved to the IR by the Avs with an undisclosed upper-body injury. The requisite ten days on the IR will give Wilson at most two games to show that he is healthy, if he is even ready to play by then. This could make it hard to the Avalanche to shop their most prized impending free agent.
  • The injuries continue to pile on for the Vancouver Canucks, as Chris Tanev has also joined the injured reserve. While the Canucks were happy to get starting goalie Jacob Markstrom back last night, Tanev is the latest in a long list of injuries, including Sven Baertschi, Alexander Edler, Thatcher Demko, Brandon Sutter, and Jake Virtanen. Of that group, only Virtanen has managed to stay off the IR.

Pacific Notes: Canucks, Silfverberg, Ferguson, Coyotes

After trading for New York Rangers third-string keeper Marek Mazanec yesterday, the Vancouver Canucks are returning to some semblance of a normal situation in net. The team announced that starter Jacob Markstrom has been cleared to play and will get the start tonight against the Anaheim Ducks. Mazanec will be the backup, and if Markstrom can’t hold up, could make his first NHL appearance since 2016-17 after exclusively playing in the AHL the past two years. As for Michael DiPietro, the young prospect is on his way back to the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s, as his emergency loan has come to an end. DiPietro allowed seven goals on 24 shots in his NHL debut on Monday, a forgettable performance that he’s unlikely to forget. Meanwhile, the team did not issue an update on backup Thatcher Demko, Vancouver’s other top young goalie, who is currently on the injured reserve with a knee injury. If the Canucks hope to sneak into the playoffs, they’ll likely need both Markstrom and Demko to get healthy for the stretch run.

  • As usual, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided plenty of insider information in his latest edition of “31 Thoughts”. An encouraging note for Ducks fans, especially during a stretch without much good news in Anaheim, is that Friedman claims term is the only thing separating the team and winger Jakob Silfverberg from agreeing to a contract extension. While that means the two sides are still apart, it was cap hit that was the major roadblock to a new deal. Due to Anaheim’s overall lack of cap space and the restrictions of “tagging”, many speculated that Silfverberg’s desired salary would be too difficult for the Ducks to manage. The fact that term remains “the final hurdle”, as Friedman puts it, would seem to indicate that the dollars have been agreed upon and a the odds of a new contract getting done are better than not.
  • Friedman adds a new name to the list of Edmonton Oilers GM candidates. While he maintains that Vegas Golden Knights AGM Kelly McCrimmon and former Toronto Maple Leafs executive Mark Hunter remain popular options, he also adds Boston Bruins AGM John Ferguson Jr. to the mix. Friedman notes that interim GM Keith Gretzky, who appears to have some job insurance moving forward even if it isn’t at his current position, has experience working with Ferguson from his own time with the Bruins. Ferguson is a well-respected NHL executive who previously served as the Toronto Maple Leafs GM from 2003 to 2008 and has been with the Bruins for the better part of this decade. This also isn’t the first time that his name has come up in regards to an opening; Ferguson was considered a candidate to run the Vegas Golden Knights and has already been considered a candidate to do the same with the Seattle expansion team. However, GM jobs don’t come around very often and, like McCrimmon, if Ferguson is offered the Edmonton job, is unlikely to pass in favor of waiting on Seattle.
  • One last interesting note comes in regards to the Arizona Coyotes. Friedman points out that the Coyotes are struggling with so many injuries that their AHL affiliate, the Tuscon Roadrunners, could only ice a lineup of 17 skaters last night, playing a man down. CapFriendly’s depth chart shows that only 15 skaters under contract with the ’Yotes, including just nine forwards, are currently in Tuscon, as Arizona needs all the help they can get at the NHL level. Fortunately, Mario Kempe, Brad Richardson, and Christian Dvorak are all getting close to a return, while Michael Grabner and Jason Demers returned to practice today writes The Athletic’s Catherine Silverman. The closer the Coyotes get to full health this season, the better their chances are to push for a playoff spot in the tight Western Conference race.

Ducks Activate Ryan Miller; Place John Gibson, Chad Johnson On IR

Talk about a reshuffling in net. Anaheim Ducks GM and now head coach Bob Murray announced today that starting goalie John Gibson and backup Chad Johnson have been placed on the injured reserve. The Athletic’s Eric Stephens adds that Kevin Boyle will make his first NHL start tonight as the Ducks face the Vancouver Canucks and will be backed up by Ryan Miller, who has been activated from the injured reserve.

Gibson, the Ducks’ Vezina-caliber keeper, missed Anaheim’s last game with an undisclosed upper-body injury suffered in his previous game. Murray provided some more clarity on that situation, describing Gibson’s injury as head, neck, and back soreness from being “whacked a whole bunch on one play”. The Ducks’ release noted that Gibson is improving, but the team still opted to place him on IR. Gibson should return to action when the requisite ten days have passed.

As for Johnson, this move seems just as much about moving Miller off of IR as it does the current backup’s status. Officially, Johnson is out with a head injury, but as Stephens notes, he took a puck up high yesterday in practice and was suffering from a headache. While all head injuries should be taken seriously, an IR stint may be considered overkill in this situation. However, the Ducks do not want to carry three goalies for the rest of the season, so have put off the decision – possibly in hopes of solving the problem via trade – by deactivating Johnson and activating Miller, who seemingly has been deemed the better option to backup Boyle in the short term. It remains to be seen if Miller is actually ready to take the net again for Anaheim. He has been sidelined with a knee injury since early December and was not expected back for another few weeks. Hopefully, Boyle can follow up a pretty good NHL debut with a strong start (or several).

Vancouver Canucks Acquire Marek Mazanec

The Vancouver Canucks needed a goaltender, and they needed one now. Instead of waiting for a chance to reclaim someone like Mike McKenna, the team has traded for New York Rangers netminder Marek Mazanec. The Canucks will send a 2020 seventh-round pick to the Rangers.

Vancouver had been using junior goaltender Michael DiPietro as their backup recently, and even gave the 19-year old a start yesterday. It didn’t go well as DiPietro allowed seven goals on 24 shots against the Western Conference-leading San Jose Sharks. Keeping their prized young goaltender in the NHL to sit on the bench or get shelled by competition he’s never seen before just isn’t a good development strategy, meaning the Canucks needed to add another body of some sort.

Mazanec will become that body, as he too doesn’t bring a ton of NHL experience to the table. The 27-year old has played 31 games in the league but 25 of those appearances came back in 2013-14 with the Nashville Predators. After heading overseas for a short period last season, Mazanec returned and has a .903 save percentage in 20 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack. There’s little reason to believe that he will be a long-term solution in Vancouver, but at this point the team will take what they can get.

Vancouver has also recalled Adam Gaudette from the minor leagues, giving them a full 23-man roster as they prepare for a road trip through California.
