Injury Notes: Miller, Polak, Alzner

April 19, 2017 at 11:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Boston Bruins will welcome back Colin Miller to their lineup against the Ottawa Senators tonight, taking the place of Tommy Cross on the blueline. The Bruins are down 2-1, and have had a myriad of injuries on their back end with Torey Krug, Brandon Carlo and Adam McQuaid all missing time. They’ll hope Miller can help them out, as he’ll skate beside John-Michael Liles tonight.

Here are some more updates from around the league…

  • Roman Polak underwent successful surgery yesterday to fix his broken leg, and will now be on a long road to recovery. Tom Gulitti of NHL.com relays that he’ll stay in the hospital for a few days before starting down that road, which will have to include finding a job this summer. Polak will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1st, and with the Maple Leafs likely looking to make improvements on the blue line from this season there may be no room for him. After a brutal start, Polak somewhat turned his game around and should find a role somewhere in the league should he fully recover in time for the start of the season.
  • The Washington Capitals have their own injury on the back end, as Karl Alzner will indeed be out for their game tonight. The defenseman skated on his own after practice according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post, which is the first time he’s been on the ice in several days. Alzner will also be a UFA this summer, but unlike Polak will be sure to get several multi-year offers. Though his overall games-played streak was broken when he missed game 3, he has still played in every single Capitals’ regular season game for the past seven seasons. His durability and consistency will be much sought-after around the league.
  • The Caps had a scare when Marcus Johansson crashed into Braden Holtby at practice, but all involved said he’s okay and won’t miss any time. After another elite regular season, Holtby hasn’t played up to his lofty playoff past yet, holding just a .914 save percentage through three games. Prior to this year, he had put up a .937 mark in the postseason.
  • Paul Stastny was on the ice at Blues’ practice, but he will not play tonight. Stastny hasn’t played yet in the first round series, but is one of the Blues’ most important forwards when healthy. With the Blues up 3-0, they’ll take their time with the centerman.

West Notes: Green, Stastny, Eakin

April 18, 2017 at 5:49 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

While the Canucks are still considering several different options to fill their head coaching vacancy, TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that Travis Green, the bench boss at their AHL affiliate in Utica, remains the front runner for the job.  He adds that more interviews will be held this week.

Green recently completed his fourth season with the Comets, his only coaching experience at the professional level.  He has interviewed for NHL jobs in recent years though obviously he hasn’t been able to land a spot yet.  Green is no stranger to the NHL game though, having played parts of 14 seasons with five different organizations before retiring in 2007.

Of course, Green isn’t the only coach that has been linked to Vancouver as earlier today, it was reported that one of the others being considered is former Edmonton coach Ralph Krueger.

Other news from the Western Conference:

  • Blues center Paul Stastny returned to practice on Tuesday, Tom Timmermann and Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch note.  Head coach Mike Yeo had him skating with the third line and was pleased with his progress: “I thought he was skating well. I thought he was involved in every drill and conditioning didn’t look like an issue and timing and execution didn’t look like it was an issue either.”  With St. Louis comfortably up 3-0 in their series against the Wild, they can afford to take their time with their top center so it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll be back in the lineup in what could be the clinching game tomorrow night.
  • The looming expansion draft is going to result in some notable players hitting the trade market and one of those could be Stars center Cody Eakin, suggests Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News. He notes that as things stand, Eakin may be forced to shift to the wing for next season, a position he hasn’t had as much success at in the past.  Accordingly, it may make sense for GM Jim Nill to try to move him in advance of the draft which would free up another protection slot up front to work with.  Eakin is coming off a tough year with just 12 points in 60 games but had at least 35 in each of the past three years which may be enticing to other teams around the league.

Injury Updates: Blackhawks, Methot, Stastny

April 11, 2017 at 8:47 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Blackhawks will be without defenseman Michal Rozsival when the puck drops on their series opener against Nashville on Thursday as they announced that the blueliner underwent surgery today to repair facial fractures sustained against the Ducks last week.  The veteran was a depth player for Chicago for most of the season, getting into 22 games while averaging 15:30 per night in ice time.  There is no timetable for his potential return but the team noted he’s expected to make a full recovery.  Forward Andrew Desjardins, who also was injured against Anaheim, remains day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Chicago will get a boost up front against the Predators as center Artem Anisimov will return to the lineup after missing the last month with a leg injury, notes CSN Chicago’s Tracey Myers.  He had been skating for the last week as he worked himself back into game shape.  Anisimov is expected to rejoin wingers Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane inside their top six forward group.

More injury news from around the NHL:

  • Senators defenseman Marc Methot is listed as a game-time decision for Wednesday’s series opener against Boston, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun notes. Head coach Guy Boucher calls Methot’s situation the only one he’ll have to make a decision on and that they could still opt to rest him up for a few more days.  The blueliner has missed the last nine games with a lacerated finger suffered after being slashed by Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby on March 23rd.
  • The Blues will likely be without center Paul Stastny when they open up their series against Minnesota tomorrow night, reports Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He suffered a broken foot back on March 21st against Colorado and has been out of the lineup since then.  It’s expected that Ivan Barbashev will open up the series in his place on the top line alongside Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko.
  • Bruins centers David Krejci and Dominic Moore missed practice today and while the team is hopeful that both will be ready to take on Ottawa tomorrow, head coach Bruce Cassidy told CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty that it’s not a guarantee that either will be available.  He noted that both players are going through “maintenance work” at the moment.  Krejci’s absence in particular is noteworthy as this is the second straight practice he missed.  Not only has he been Boston’s top postseason scorer in two of their last four playoff appearances, he also led the NHL in playoff points in those two years.

Injury Updates: Stastny, Devils, Lundqvist

March 22, 2017 at 6:43 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

St. Louis will be without center Paul Stastny on a week-to-week basis due to a lower body injury sustained last night in the first period against Colorado, reports Chris Pinkert on the Blues’ team website.  Stastny had been centering the top line alongside Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko.

Further compounding the problem for the Blues is the fact that center Jori Lehtera is also out of the lineup having missed the last six games with an undisclosed injury.  Schwartz and Alex Steen both have predominantly played the wing this season but have experience playing down the middle so it wouldn’t be surprising if one of them shifts spots for the time being.  Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch adds (Twitter link) that the team is not planning to call anyone up in Stastny’s absence.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • Although New Jersey forwards Mike Cammalleri (upper body), Jacob Josefson (upper body) and Devante Smith-Pelly (lower body) aren’t close to returning, head coach John Hynes isn’t prepared to call any of them out for the remainder of the season, notes NJ Advance Media’s Chris Ryan. With the Devils out of the playoff race, it would make some sense for them to shut the veterans down to allow their youngsters to get some more NHL playing time down the stretch.  Cammalleri and Josefson are skating on their own while Smith-Pelly has yet to skate since being injured last week.  None of the players are expected back at practice in the coming days.
  • The Rangers will have goaltender Henrik Lundqvist back in the lineup either Saturday against the Kings or Sunday against the Ducks, head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters, including Justin Tasch of the New York Daily News. He also acknowledged that the veteran netminder could play now if they needed him but with their postseason situation all but carved in stone as the first Wild Card team in the East, they can afford to give him a few extra days off to make sure he’s fully healthy.

Injury Notes: Goalie Pads, Stastny, Dumba

February 20, 2017 at 1:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Since February 4th, every goaltender in the league has had to wear the new tighter fitting pants in games. While some goalies like Robin Lehner and Pekka Rinne have come out in favor of the new style, others are having difficulty adjusting. Eric Engels of Sportsnet spoke to both Carey Price and Al Montoya about them, who told him they are considering sending pictures of the new bruises they’ve suffered because of the lack of protection. Price in particular showed Engels that he got hit in the inside of his thigh with a shot, where there is almost no protection.

While it’s unclear if the two would actually send the pictures, it is a concern as the league moves forward with smaller equipment. With shots becoming harder and harder in the game, and players moving at a faster pace, protection of goaltenders is still a huge point of contention for the NHL and NHLPA. While the league (and many players) wants higher scoring and believe that reducing equipment would help that, safety is still of a high importance. When a player of Price’s caliber speaks out, the player’s union is sure to listen.

  • Paul Stastny is back in the lineup tonight for the St. Louis Blues after missing the previous four games with a  lower-body injury.  He’ll skate with Alex Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko tonight on a line that has found tremendous success in the past. Patrik Berglund will be the second line center besides Jaden Schwartz and Magnus Paajarvi, while Ivan Barbashev—who has impressed in his short time with the club—will move to the wing beside Jori Lehtera.
  • Mathew Dumba, who hasn’t played since February 10th is physically ready to play according to head coach Bruce Boudreau. The coach hasn’t committed to letting him play tomorrow against the Chicago Blackhawks, and since Jonas Brodin has returned recently he could play it a little slowly with Dumba to make sure he is at no risk of re-injuring himself.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports that Erik Johnson and Rene Bourque both skated today at Colorado Avalanche practice. Both players were in red non-contact sweaters, but it is a good sign for them going forward. Bourque has just 13 points this season, but could be someone who could fill a bottom-six role on a contender if he can prove he’s healthy enough to contribute.

Snapshots: Memorial Cup, Rozsival, Brodin

February 18, 2017 at 7:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Maple Leafs announced the four additions to their Legends Row tonight before the start of their game against the Ottawa Senators. Charlie Conacher, Red Kelly, Frank Mahovlich and Wendel Clark will all have statues revealed in the fall alongside the other 10 players.

Brendan Shanahan (via James Mirtle of The Athletic) spoke at the ceremony, saying “it is our sincere hope that we will soon have reason to expand this bench to recognize future Leafs heroes.” One player Leaf fans are hoping will be in that group one day, Mitch Marner, is out tonight and tomorrow with a shoulder injury, forcing the Maple Leafs to shake up their lines. William Nylander is back skating with Auston Matthews, while Connor Brown has been dropped into Marner’s spot.

  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet tells us that the 2018 Memorial Cup will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan. The CHL tournament is a huge stage for young players to showcase their skills, and the host city is entered automatically. Hopefully for the Regina Pats, Sam Steel will still be with them next season. The 30th-overall pick by Anaheim at the most recent draft has 103 points in 50 games and is still only 18 years old.
  • According to Chris Hine of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago will be getting a little veteran depth back on the blueline as early as tomorrow. Michal Rozsival, who hasn’t played since January 15th due to a foot injury is set to return to the lineup Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres. The veteran of 955 games gives the Hawks an extra body that can be trusted in a limited role. With the team on their way back to the playoffs, they’ll need all the health they can get.
  • Just before their game started, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune told us the Minnesota Wild activated Jonas Brodin from injured reserve. Brodin hasn’t played since January 17th, and will be a big addition to the Wild as they look to continue their dominance in the Western Conference. The team has 82 points already, easily pacing the west and seven points ahead of the Blackhawks for first in the Central Division.
  • Lou Korac of NHL.com adds that the St. Louis Blues have sent Kenny Agostino back down to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, despite playing well in his short stint. The Blues have Paul Stastny returning and had a roster crunch up front. Agostino will head back to the AHL where he was the league’s top scorer at the time of his call up—and still is. 60 points in 48 games for the former fifth-round pick, who has turned into an excellent playmaker at the age of 24.

Injury Updates: Blues, Marner, Hartnell, Schultz, Bernier

February 17, 2017 at 4:50 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Blues will be getting center Kyle Brodziak back in their lineup earlier than expected.  The team announced that they’ve activated him off of injured reserve two weeks ahead of schedule.  Brodziak suffered a foot injury three weeks ago and was expected to be out until the end of the month but he recovered quicker than expected.  The 32 year old has ten points (4-6-10) in 47 games with St. Louis this season.  To make room for him on the roster, the team assigned center Wade Megan back to Chicago of the AHL.

Still with the Blues, center Paul Stastny is expected to travel with the team to Buffalo in advance of their games against the Sabres tomorrow, notes Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  He remains day-to-day for the time being with a lower body injury.  If Stastny is ready to return, another player will have to be sent back to the AHL to make room for him.

Other injury updates from around the league:

  • Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner is day-to-day as a result of a shoulder injury sustained on Wednesday in Columbus, notes Jonas Siegel of the Canadian Press. However, he hasn’t been ruled out of the lineup for tomorrow’s game against the Senators.  Marner is tied for first overall in rookie scoring (with Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine) this season with 48 points (15-33-48) in 56 games.  Still with Toronto, winger Nikita Soshnikov is nearing a return from his upper body injury and could be in the lineup against Ottawa.
  • Columbus left winger Scott Hartnell will miss his second straight game tonight with a lower body injury, reports Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch (Twitter link). The injury was originally sustained on Monday night against the Rangers.  That means that right winger Oliver Bjorkstrand will get at least one more game after being recalled on an emergency basis on Tuesday.  Hartnell has spent a lot of time on the fourth line for the Blue Jackets this season but has been rather productive in that role, picking up 30 points (13-17-30) in 55 games.
  • The Penguins continue to get tough news from the infirmary. After it was noted earlier today that Olli Maatta will miss six weeks as he recovers from hand surgery, the team announced via Twitter that blueliner Justin Schultz is dealing with a concussion and is in concussion protocol.  There’s no timetable for his return to the lineup.  Schultz is having a career year in his first season with Pittsburgh with 39 points (9-30-39) in 56 games.  That point total ranks sixth overall among NHL defenders.
  • Ducks netminder Jonathan Bernier is dealing with an illness, reports Elliott Teaford of the Southern California News Group (Twitter link). However, the team is hopeful that he will still be able to serve as the backup tonight to John Gibson as Anaheim takes on Florida.

Blues Place Paul Stastny On Injured Reserve

February 14, 2017 at 2:02 pm CDT | by Ben Levine 2 Leave a Comment

The Blues’ injury woes continue. The team has announced that they’ve placed forward Paul Stastny on the injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The veteran was injured following a collision with Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri on February 9th. Fortunately, Lou Korac of NHL.com tweets that the 31-year-old may only be out through the week.

The Blues will certainly miss the veteran, especially with fellow forwards Robby Fabbri and Kyle Brodziak sidelined with their own injuries. Coach Mike Yeo recently discussed Stastny’s importance to the team.

“He’s usually the first guy over the boards for a power-play face-off or the first guy over the boards for a penalty kill faceoff and those are key. He’s a very important player for us,” Yeo said. “You don’t take out a top-line center from too many lineups where they don’t feel that. It’s got to be a next-man-up mentality here. We have more than capable players and our focus is on the guys that are in the lineup and if we take care of our job, we give him a chance to get better and obviously we’ll be stronger when he gets back.”

In his third season with the squad, Stastny ranks fourth on the Blues in points (15 goals, 20 assists).

Central Notes: Berglund, Stastny, Brodin, Hjalmarsson

February 11, 2017 at 2:57 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk is the first player many think of when it comes to St. Louis and the upcoming trade deadline, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch suggests in a reader chat that center Patrik Berglund may be the one to really keep an eye on.

Berglund is having one of his better seasons in recent years and has already passed the double digit goal mark for the ninth straight time.  However, like Shattenkirk, he’s poised to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and if GM Doug Armstrong is looking to avoid a repeat of last year where his top UFA (David Backes) left for nothing, Berglund could potentially be on the move between now and March 1st.  He’d slot in nicely in a middle six role for several contending teams and carries a $3.7MM cap hit.

More from the Central:

  • Still with the Blues, center Paul Stastny will not play tonight against Montreal, reports Chris Pinkert on their team site. He suffered a lower body injury on Thursday against the Maple Leafs.  Fortunately for St. Louis, the injury isn’t believed to be serious, Rutherford adds in a separate column.  Stastny sits fourth in scoring for the Blues this season with 15 goals and 20 assists.  In his absence, Alexander Steen will slide over to the middle on the top line.
  • The Wild are hopeful that defenseman Jonas Brodin will only miss another seven-to-ten days as a result of his fractured finger, reports Kent Youngblood of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He has been out of the lineup since January 17th and was expected to miss at least four weeks at the time so his recovery appears to be right on schedule.  Brodin has 16 points (3-13-16) in 43 games this season and sits fourth on Minnesota in ice time per game at 19:47 per night.
  • Count Blackhawks blueliner Niklas Hjalmarsson among the many players who are publicly advocating for the NHL to go to the 2018 Olympics, notes Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune. Hjalmarsson had the chance to play in the 2014 tournament, earning a silver medal with Team Sweden.  While there remains no firm deadline for a decision by the NHL, the expectation is that it will have to come at some time in March.

Deadline Primer: St. Louis Blues

February 8, 2017 at 1:14 pm CDT | by Glen Miller 1 Comment

With the trade deadline now just weeks away, we’re going to start taking a closer look at each team.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?

After earning a berth in the 2015-16 Western Conference Final, the St. Louis Blues were again expected to be among the top teams in the conference and to perhaps make it as far as the Stanley Cup Final. Unfortunately the Blues have underachieved on the season, ultimatley leading management to dismiss veteran bench boss Ken Hitchcock. More changes could be on the horizon as the team currently finds itself fighting for their playoff lives.

Record

27-22-5, 54 points, fourth in Central Division

Deadline Status

Buyer and perhaps seller

Draft Picks

2017: STL 1st, STL 2nd, STL 4th, BUF 5th, STL 6th, STL 7th

2018: STL 1st, STL 2nd, STL 3rd, CGY 3rd*, STL 4th, STL 5th, STL 6th, STL 7th

*Pick is conditional on whether Brian Elliot re-signs with Calgary

Trade Chips

It would be understandable if Blues GM Doug Armstrong doesn’t view this year’s edition of the team as a viable Stanley Cup contender and was therefore reluctant to part with either prospect or draft pick capital for rental players at the deadline. St. Louis boasts a shallow prospect pool after years of earning draft selections outside of the top-10. The team does possess their own first and second-round picks in each of the next two seasons and perhaps in the right deal they would be willing to include those assets but it would have to be a trade the brought back a young, controllable top-six forward.

Kevin Shattenkirk might represent both the team’s most valuable asset as well as the one most likely to be dealt. Stung by losing veterans David Backes and Troy Brouwer for nothing as free agents last summer, Armstrong might be motivated to cash in the puck-moving defenseman in order to avoid a similar fate in July. As a skilled, right-shot defenseman, Shattenkirk is a tremendously valuable commodity on the open market, especially if he agrees to an extension with an interested club prior to the deal being made, and could return multiple pieces to improve the team moving forward.

Team Needs

  1. A Starting Goaltender – The Blues took a risk in the offseason by splitting up the effective netminding duo of Brian Elliot and Jake Allen, moving the former to Calgary at the draft in exchange for picks. Allen was viewed as the goalie of the future but has struggled to stop the puck with any consistency this season. His backup, Carter Hutton, simply isn’t a starting-caliber backstop in this league. If the Blues decide to go for it this year, it would behoove them to look at the starting goalie market where one of Marc-Andre Fleury or Ben Bishop would easily solve their need.
  2. A Top-Line Center – Paul Stastny is a nice, #2 pivot but he’s miscast in St. Louis as their top option due to the absence of any other competent scoring line options. Patrik Berglund (20 points in 54 games) and Jori Lehtera (16 points in 49 games) simply haven’t gotten the job done. The team chose to let Backes go in free agency and it’s looking more and more like a mistake that they didn’t either bite the bullet and re-sign him or replace him in the offseason. If the Blues could find a top-line center under long-term control, they’d have to take a look at it.
