Devils Recall Seven Black Aces

April 24, 2025 at 2:54 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 3 Comments

Since the Devils’ AHL affiliate in Utica failed to make the Calder Cup Playoffs, New Jersey is beefing up its postseason roster with seven Black Aces. The team announced they’ve recalled forwards Brian Halonen, Mike Hardman, Nathan Legare, Marc McLaughlin, defensemen Topias Vilen, Colton White, and goaltender Isaac Poulter as practice players for the remainder of their playoff run.

While the group is technically available to play postseason games for the Devils if need be, that’s never the purpose behind Black Ace recalls during the postseason. Instead, they’ll skate with the team to extend their season since they’re not getting any AHL action.

The four forwards each got into NHL games for New Jersey in 2024-25. It marked Legare’s NHL debut and Hardman’s and McLaughlin’s Devils debuts. Halonen, an undrafted free agent signing out of Michigan Tech in 2022, made a couple of appearances in January amid a strong minor-league showing. Halonen led Utica in goals (27) and ranked second in points (40) in 62 showings. He signed a two-year, two-way extension last May, so he’ll be back with the club next season, barring a trade.

Hardman also logged a pair of appearances for New Jersey, one in December and one in April. They were his first in the NHL since March 2023 as a member of the Blackhawks. A depth free agent pickup last summer, he’s also under contract through 2025-26. The 26-year-old scored 18-17–35 in 57 AHL games and had a team-high +11 rating.

Legare, 24, made his NHL debut in December with a trio of appearances and recorded a minus-one rating. He’s already on his third NHL organization. A third-round pick of the Penguins in 2019, he was traded to the Canadiens in August 2023 as part of the Erik Karlsson three-team deal. He spent under a full season in Montreal’s system before they traded him to New Jersey in a minor-league swap ahead of last year’s AHL trade deadline. He’s a restricted free agent this summer and is eligible for arbitration.

McLaughlin arrived in Newark at the trade deadline, acquired from the Bruins for defenseman Daniil Misyul. He played in the Devils’ final two games of the regular season and recorded an assist and a minus-one rating. The 25-year-old center had six assists in 16 games for Utica after the trade and will be a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer, so this could be the end of his short stint as a Devil.

Vilen, 22, has yet to make his NHL debut. New Jersey drafted the rearguard in the fifth round of the 2021 draft and he’s coming off his second full season with Utica. The 6’1″, 194-lb lefty had 1-23–24 with a plus-two rating in 58 games this year and has one season remaining on his entry-level contract.

White was a Devils draft pick back in 2015 and returned to the organization last summer after a two-year stint with the Ducks. He hasn’t played in the NHL since logging a career-high 46 appearances for Anaheim in 2022-23. The 27-year-old depth piece rediscovered his game in Utica after a tough second year with Anaheim’s affiliate in San Diego, posting 4-17–21 in 61 games with a plus-one rating.

Poulter has been on the Devils’ roster more than a few times over the past two seasons as an emergency recall and, despite dressing as a backup for regular-season action, hasn’t touched the ice. He posted a .898 SV%, 2.86 GAA, one shutout, and a 16-13-7 record in 36 showings for Utica this year.

Minor Transactions: 4/17/25

April 17, 2025 at 7:59 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

With several teams seeing their 2024-25 seasons come to an end in recent days (with more to come tonight), there has been an influx of players being returned to the minors.  We’ll keep track of the moves that have not been already covered here.

  • The Ducks have returned wingers Nikita Nesterenko and Sam Colangelo to AHL San Diego, per a team release. Nesterenko played in a career-best 20 games with Anaheim this season, potting four goals and two assists.  With the Gulls, he has 13 goals and 21 assists in 48 contests.  As for Colangelo, he had ten goals and two helpers in 32 NHL outings while he’s just shy of a point per game in the minors with 35 points in 38 contests.
  • The Canucks announced (Twitter link) that they’ve returned defensemen Kirill Kudryavtsev and Victor Mancini, forwards Aatu Raty, Linus Karlsson, Max Sasson, and Ty Mueller, along with goaltender Nikita Tolopilo to AHL Abbotsford. Raty, Sasson, and Karlsson saw the most action with Vancouver this season with Raty being the most productive with 11 points in 33 appearances.  Mancini got into 16 games after being acquired in the J.T. Miller swap, while the other three all made their respective NHL debuts in recent days.  They will be big additions to an Abbotsford team who has been the hottest team in the league over the last several weeks.
  • The Devils announced that they’ve returned forwards Mike Hardman and Marc McLaughlin to AHL Utica. Both players were recalled on Wednesday and suited up in their regular season finale.  Hardman had an assist in two NHL games while contributing 35 points with the Comets.  As for McLaughlin, his NHL season wrapped up with two goals and three assists in 14 games between New Jersey and Boston while adding 19 points in 48 outings between their respective AHL franchises.

Devils Recall Marc McLaughlin

April 14, 2025 at 8:49 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Devils announced they’ve recalled forward Marc McLaughlin from AHL Utica. He’ll join the team on their road trip amid an expected suspension for Paul Cotter, who’s facing a hearing with the Department of Player Safety today for an illegal check to the head of Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech.

New Jersey already had a handful of extra forwards on hand for yesterday’s 1-0 loss to the Islanders, not including winger Stefan Noesen, who they scratched for rest. Adding McLaughlin to fold indicates they’re considering resting some other lineup staples at forward for their season-ending back-to-back against the Bruins and Red Wings. The Devils are locked into third place in the Metropolitan Division and a first-round date with the Hurricanes, so there are no seeding changes at risk from the results of their final two games.

McLaughlin played 12 games earlier this season and has 26 career appearances, although none with New Jersey. The Devils acquired him from Boston in exchange for depth defenseman Daniil Misyul at the trade deadline. He has six career goals, including two in 2024-25, but is still looking for his first NHL assist. The 6’0″, 200-lb pivot has averaged a shade under 10 minutes per game in the NHL and has won 24 of his 58 career faceoffs for a 41.4% win rate. The 25-year-old’s possession impacts are usually underwhelming, posting a CF% of 48.4 at even strength in parts of four seasons – 5.6% worse than Boston’s shot attempt share without him on the ice.

A defensive specialist, even in the minors, McLaughlin’s point totals are correspondingly solid but not eye-popping. He’s posted five assists in 14 games with Utica since the trade after starting the year with 5-9–14 in 34 games for the Bruins’ affiliate in Providence. He has 26-37–63 in 183 career AHL games since signing with Boston as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2022.

Since McLaughlin has under 80 games of NHL experience with at least three professional seasons, he’ll be a Group VI unrestricted free agent when his two-way deal expires this summer. A return to New Jersey as a depth piece shouldn’t be ruled out if they like what they see from him in the minors.

Bruins, Devils Swap Daniil Misyul, Marc McLaughlin

March 7, 2025 at 4:48 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Bruins announced they’ve acquired minor-league defenseman Daniil Misyul from the Devils for AHL-bound forward Marc McLaughlin.

McLaughlin has been in and out of the Bruins lineup this season, working into a career-high 12 games along the way. He has just two points, both goals, in that span while adding a minus-one. He’s been a tad more productive in the minor leagues, where he’s totaled 14 points in 34 games. That mark matches his scoring from 68 AHL games last year. Both seasons stand as a down year from McLaughlin’s career-high 30 points set in 66 AHL games in 2022-23. He’s served as a de facto call-up for the Bruins all the while, ultimately totaling six points – interestingly, all goals – in 26 career appearances dating back to 2021-22. He was signed as an undrafted free agent that season, joining the Bruins organization after four years at Boston College. McLaughlin grew up just outside of Boston and, save for AHL stints in Providence, will make his first move out of Massachusetts since he played USHL hockey in Cedar Rapids thanks to this trade.

In return, the Bruins land six-foot-three defenseman Misyul, who has eight assists, 33 penalty minutes, and a minus-eight in 47 AHL games this season. Misyul also made his NHL debut earlier in the year, but managed no scoring and a minus-one. He has also seen a knock in his minor league production after netting 14 points in 44 games last year. Prior to that, Misyul spent five seasons with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of Russia’s KHL. He wasn’t much of a scorer overseas either, tallying just 21 points across 183 games in the KHL. He will slot in as a depth defenseman for the Providence Bruins.

Both McLaughlin and Misyul are set for restricted free agency this summer.

Bruins’ Marc McLaughlin Clears Waivers

January 13, 2025 at 1:11 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 1 Comment

Jan. 13: McLaughlin cleared waivers, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Expect him to head to Providence at some point on Monday.

Jan. 12: The Boston Bruins have placed forward Marc McLaughlin on waivers, per PuckPedia. He’ll be assigned to AHL Providence if he clears.

The Bruins successfully waived McLaughlin ahead of the start of the season. He began the year in the minors but earned a quick call-up after posting 10 points in 15 AHL games to start the season.

McLaughlin bounced between the NHL and AHL lineups through late November, ultimately earning a full-time role with the Bruins before December. He’s since rotated into Boston’s fourth line, appearing in 12 games and scoring two goals.

McLaughlin has sat atop Boston’s call-up sheet since he joined the team as an undrafted college free agent at the end of Boston College’s 2021-22 campaign. He immediately stepped into the NHL, appearing in 11 games and scoring his first career goal before the season ended.

McLaughlin spent the next two years primarily in the minor leagues, combining for 44 points in 134 AHL games and adding one goal in three NHL spot starts. He was a healthy scratch in every game since the calendar turned over but earned a spot start on Saturday with Mark Kastelic out with an undisclosed injury.

In the overtime win, McLaughlin recorded four hits and two blocked shots in just five minutes of ice time. The Bruins will now attempt to pass him through waivers and reassign him to the minors less than a day later.

Teams will have until 1 p.m. CT on Monday to claim McLaughlin, though his role of menial fourth-liner makes a change of scenery hard to envision.

Boston Bruins Recall Marc McLaughlin

December 21, 2024 at 8:51 am CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

According to the AHL transactions page, the Boston Bruins have recalled depth forward Marc McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s stay on the AHL roster was brief, as he was only reassigned yesterday afternoon.

Following the allowable roster moves during the roster freeze, McLaughlin was eligible for recall to the NHL active roster since he was recalled in a separate transaction after December 11th. It was another paper move, but it allowed the Bruins to bank valuable cap space for a short time.

It’s been another hybrid year for McLaughlin in his fourth season of professional hockey. He’s spent much of his career playing in AHL Providence but has 23 NHL games with the Bruins.

He’s failed to bring his point-per-game offense from the NCAA to the professional ranks. McLaughlin’s production has risen this season with five goals and 10 points in 15 games for the AHL Bruins which is much better than his six goals and 14 points in 68 games from a season ago.

His consistency in the AHL, or lack thereof, has prohibited McLaughlin from earning any legitimate opportunity at the NHL level. He’s scored six goals throughout his career and has shown flashes of being a responsible defensive forward but hasn’t earned a full-time spot on the roster up to this point.

Still, he’ll earn valuable experience during practice with the Bruins despite factoring little during games. Boston matches up against the flailing Buffalo Sabres tonight which makes as good an opportunity as ever for McLaughlin to enter the lineup.

East Notes: Greenway, Samuelsson, Robertson, Bruins

December 6, 2024 at 6:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

The Sabres are getting close to getting a couple of players back in the lineup.  Team reporter Justin Alpert relays that winger Jordan Greenway and defenseman Mattias Samuelsson both took part in practice today in regular (contact) jerseys after previously being limited to non-contact drills.  Greenway has been out for nearly three weeks due to a middle-body injury and has three goals and three assists through 16 games so far.  As for Samuelsson, he last played nearly four weeks ago due to a lower-body issue.  It has been a struggle for him this season as his playing time is down by more than four minutes a night while also briefly spending time as a healthy scratch.  Both players probably aren’t going to be ready for Saturday’s game versus Utah but they should be back soon after that.

Elsewhere in the East:

  • It turns out that Victor Mancini isn’t the only blueliner that the Rangers will bring up today. The team announced (Twitter link) that Matthew Robertson has been recalled from AHL Hartford.  The 23-year-old has yet to play at the NHL level but is off to a good start with the Wolf Pack this season, collecting eight points in 19 games so far.  He’s expected to serve as the seventh defender for the time being with recently acquired rearguard Urho Vaakanainen still out with an upper-body injury.
  • A day after papering them to the minors, the Bruins have recalled forward Marc McLaughlin and defenseman Jordan Oesterle from Providence, per the AHL’s transactions log. The move has been made frequently with both players as Boston attempts to bank some extra cap space to utilize later in the season.  McLaughlin has been held off the scoresheet in four games with the big club while Oesterle has three assists in his first six NHL games this season.

Evening Notes: Smith, McLaughlin, Oesterle, Portillo

November 28, 2024 at 6:05 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 1 Comment

The Carolina Hurricanes have brought defender Ty Smith back to the NHL roster per NHL.com’s Walt Ruff. He was assigned to the minor leagues in a corresponding move to their recall of goaltender Yaniv Perets, who filled in while Pyotr Kochetkov was day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Smith has been back-and-forth between the NHL and AHL rosters all season, though he hasn’t played an NHL game since 2022-23. His only ice time this year has come through four games with the Chicago Wolves. Smith has three points, all assists, in those outings. Smith has a defined history in North American pros, originally going 17th-overall in the 2018 NHL Draft after a strong WHL career and making his NHL debut in 2020-21. He recorded 23 points in 48 games as a rookie, but has since failed to follow-up – with just 47 games across 123 career games. He’s spent the last two years fully in the minors, recording 67 points across 102 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Smith will now return to a role as Carolina’s seventh defender, hoping to fight for ice time above Sean Walker or Shayne Gostisbehere.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The Boston Bruins have assigned forward Marc McLaughlin and defenseman Jordan Oesterle to the minor leagues per the AHL transactions log. The move was first reported by Robert Chalmers of Cohen’s Hockey Media. It’s unclear if the move is a paper move – though Chalmers suggests it could be lasting. Neither McLaughlin or Oesterle suited up in Boston’s Wednesday win over the Islanders. In fact, McLaughlin has only stepped into one Bruins game this season – Boston’s loss to Vancouver on Tuesday. He didn’t record any scoring in that outing but did add one block and three hits in 9:36 of ice time. Oesterle has served a bit hardier of a role – albeit as an injury fill-in for Hampus Lindholm – stepping into three games but yet to find his first point of the year. Oesterle’s only stat changes come through three blocks, three hits, and a -2. Both players will return to the minors, where McLaughlin has scored 10 points in 15 games and Oesterle has eight points in nine games.
  • Top Los Angeles Kings goalie prospect Erik Portillo is expected to make his NHL debut on Friday shares team manager of editorial content Zach Dooley. Portillo will take on an Anaheim Ducks with a 5-4-1 record in their last 10 games, though they’ve tied opponents in scoring 31-to-31. The Kings called Portillo up for the first full recall of his career on November 24th. He’s the only Ontario Reign goaltender with a save percentage above .900 – boasting a .906 through six AHL games this year. Portillo was more formally Ontario’s starter last year, recording 24 wins and a .918 through 39 games as an AHL rookie. He was a standout at the University of Michigan, accumulating a .918 save percentage over 87 games and three seasons with the Wolverines.

Minor Transactions: 11/25/24

November 25, 2024 at 6:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

There have been quite a few paper transactions made across the NHL today as teams continue to try to save every little bit of cap room they can.  Here’s a rundown of today’s moves, per the AHL’s transactions log.

  • The Oilers have reassigned defenseman Josh Brown and forward Drake Caggiula to AHL Bakersfield. Brown has been shuffled back and forth in recent days while Caggiula was recalled back on Thursday.  Edmonton is off until Friday and the moves allow them to dip out of using LTIR and bank a small amount of cap space for the next few days.  At least one of them, if not both, will likely be recalled later in the week.
  • A day after being papered down, the Bruins have recalled forward Marc McLaughlin and defenseman Jordan Oesterle from AHL Providence. McLaughlin hasn’t played for Boston yet this season while Oesterle suited up three times earlier this month.
  • The Hurricanes have recalled winger Jackson Blake and goaltender Spencer Martin from their latest paper loan to AHL Chicago. Both players have been shuffled back and forth routinely in cap-saving moves.
  • A day after the Devils loaned wingers Shane Bowers and Nolan Foote along with defenseman Nick DeSimone to AHL Utica, the trio was recalled today. Sunday’s demotions allowed them to clear LTIR for the day but they are back to using it for the time being now.
  • After being papered down on Sunday, the Golden Knights have recalled wingers Mason Morelli and Callahan Burke, who scored his first NHL goal on Saturday in a win over Montreal. They also brought back blueliner Robert Hagg who was both recalled (on an emergency basis) and sent down on Saturday.  Hagg’s recall moves Vegas back into using LTIR for now.

Bruins Recall Marc McLaughlin

November 22, 2024 at 10:52 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Bruins announced Friday that they’ve recalled forward Marc McLaughlin from AHL Providence. They had an open spot on the active roster, but nonetheless, forward Georgii Merkulov was returned to the minor-league club in a corresponding transaction.

McLaughlin, 25, earns his first recall of the season after posting five goals, five assists, and a +5 rating through his first 15 games for the P-Bruins. The undrafted free agent signing out of Boston College in 2022 signed a two-way deal over the summer to return to the Bruins organization after a brief bout with restricted free agency.

The 6’0″, 199-lb forward saw just one game of NHL action last season, which was understandable given his significant regression on the farm. After putting up 13 goals and 30 points in 66 games during his first extended run with Providence in 2022-23, the defensive pivot scored just eight goals and 14 points in 68 appearances last year with a -7 rating.

Now, back on the right track, the hometown kid may get a chance to build on his four goals in 14 career NHL appearances. He’s one of 13 healthy forwards on the active roster, and he could make his season debut on Saturday against the Red Wings.

That could come in the third-line wing role vacated by Merkulov, who’s headed back to Providence after recording one assist and a -1 rating in a three-game call-up. The 24-year-old Russian graded out well defensively in his second NHL call-up, posting a 49.3% shot attempt share and a 70.% expected goal share at even strength.

Despite the stint in the NHL, Merkulov still ranks second on Providence in scoring with 11 points (2 G, 9 A) in 12 games. He has 136 points in 154 AHL contests since signing with Boston out of Ohio State in 2022.
