COVID Protocol Related Absences: 02/15/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. While the league is still waiting for a report from the Edmonton Oilers, here are today’s results for the other 30 teams:

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Many of today’s CPRA removals were revealed long before the list was published this afternoon. Hayden was in the lineup for Coyotes for their matinee match-up with the Blues, while Bastian joined the Devils in their return to practice this morning and Rieder did the same with the Sabres. Interestingly, McCabe and Montour were also participants in Buffalo practice today, likely indicating that they will come off the list tomorrow. New Jersey’s Gusev and Kulikov skated separately with coaches after practice today, possibly implying that they too will be off the list soon.

After being late to report yesterday, the Colorado Avalanche are responsible for the only CPRA addition today in young goaltender Miska. Otherwise, this is another positive day as the NHL’s COVID numbers continue to trend strongly in the right direction. With the difficult situations in Buffalo, Minnesota, and New Jersey looking like they will soon be resolved, some progress in Philadelphia is seemingly the only thing stopping the league moving on from their recent rash of postponements and lengthy CRPA lists.

 

Hunter Miska Re-Signs With Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have signed one of their depth goaltenders, inking Hunter Miska to a two-year contract. Miska played most of last season with the Colorado Eagles on an AHL contract before signing an NHL deal with the Avalanche in February. After issuing a qualifying offer this fall, he’ll instead sign a multi-year deal and stick with the team through the 2021-22 season.

Miska actually ended up on the bench for the Avalanche in the playoffs, backing up Michael Hutchinson after the team lost their other goaltenders to injury. That came a little more than a year after the Arizona Coyotes decided not to give him a qualifying offer, allowing him to join Colorado as a free agent. In 26 appearances for the Eagles this season, Miska posted a .924 save percentage and got his career right back on track.

The 25-year-old was never drafted, but posted strong numbers at the BCHL, USHL and collegiate levels before jumping into professional hockey in 2017. Slightly undersized for an NHL goaltender, he nevertheless has been excellent since joining the Colorado organization and will now serve as valuable depth behind Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz. The Avalanche of course also have Adam Werner under contract, who figures to get a good chunk of the AHL starts again this season.

When Stan Bowman addressed the media Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks general manager made it quite clear he wasn’t going to comment on the team’s plans regarding their goaltending situation and in particular, longtime goaltender Corey Crawford.

Crawford, who hits unrestricted free agency at the age of 35, finds himself in a unique position. He could choose to stay or go, but no matter what, he isn’t likely to meet his 2019-20 salary of $6MM. While Bowman didn’t want to comment on what the teams plans are regarding their goaltending, he did remark that some players might be willing to take a home-town discount to stay with the team. Obviously, Chicago hopes that Crawford might be willing to accept that, according to John Dietz of the Daily Herald.

“It’s fair to say that there is a value to a situation where you’ve been around, not just the city, but coaching staff, players, the whole (thing),” Bowman said. “You’ve lived this. You also have time outside that you’re going to have to experience in a new city. Some people may look at moving as an adventure. Others, it’s daunting. I don’t try to figure that out. That’s something players will have to decide on their own.”

The team hopes to make an even bigger mark in the playoffs next year, but really don’t have a starting caliber goaltender under contract for next year unless they can convince Crawford to re-sign with the team. He finished the season with a 2.77 GAA and a solid .917 save percentage in 40 appearances during the regular season. His numbers weren’t as solid in the playoffs as he finished with a 3.31 GAA and a .907 save percentage.

  • The Vancouver Canucks will have to go without one of their top scorers for another game as Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy reports that Tyler Toffoli will be out for Game 1 against the Golden Knights Sunday with a lower-body injury. The 28-year-old has only made one playoff appearance so far this postseason. He did tally six goals and 10 points in 10 games after being acquired by the Canucks. TSN’s Rick Dhaliwal reports that both Toffoli and defenseman Tyler Myers (also out Sunday) are both getting closer to being ready. However, TSN’s Matthew Sekeres reports that Myers will likely need at least a week before being able to return with a Game 3 or 4 return potentially possible.
  • The Colorado Avalanche will be without a few players for Game 2 of the conference semifinals, according to head coach Jared Bednar. The Denver Post’s Mike Chambers reports that the team will be without goaltender Philipp Grubauer for Game 2 as Pavel Francouz will take over as the starter with Michael Hutchinson as his backup. The team is trying to bring in Hunter Miska into the bubble in Edmonton to serve as the team’s third goalie. Bednar also noted that defenseman Erik Johnson is probably out, while Matt Calvert is questionable to play.
  • With the Tampa Bay Lightning having more size and strength on its side, NBC Sports’ Joe Haggerty reports that the Boston Bruins intend to start forward Nick Ritchie to their lineup to add some size of its own. He will likely fill in on the third line, dropping Sean Kuraly to the fourth line. Par Lindholm is expected to drop out of the lineup. The 24-year-old Ritchie does provide some size as he is 6-foot-2, 230 pounds and should make a physical difference against the Lightning. However, he hasn’t found the scoreboard yet with no points in four playoff games this year.

Colorado Avalanche Sign Hunter Miska To NHL Deal

The Colorado Avalanche have decided to secure a little more goaltending depth for the rest of the season. Hunter Miska has signed a one-year NHL contract with the Avalanche, meaning he can be recalled if necessary. Miska had previously been playing for the Colorado Eagles on an AHL deal. The financial details have not been released, but the contract will likely carry a prorated $700K cap hit.

Now 24, Miska became an unrestricted free agent last summer when the Arizona Coyotes decided not to extend him a qualifying offer. That offer would have only been $874K, but with the depth in their system and Miska’s struggles at the AHL level it made some sense. After all, the former University of Minnesota-Duluth goaltender had only posted an .895 save percentage in 25 minor league appearances during the 2018-19 season.

Colorado took a chance on him on a minor league deal, and it appears to have paid off. Miska has been excellent for the Eagles this season, posting a .925 save percentage and 11-4-3 record through 19 games. That has him tied for fourth in league save percentage, with two of the names ahead of him already in the NHL (Igor Shesterkin and Jonas Johansson).

Because his birthday comes just a few days into July, Miska will not qualify for Group VI unrestricted free agency this summer and will now be a restricted free agent under the control of Colorado. That means they will have the same opportunity to issue him a qualifying offer to keep him in the system.

Colorado Avalanche Facing Tricky Goaltending Situation

4:42pm: Well, that was fast. The Avalanche have recalled Bibeau from the AHL, though it is not clear if he could actually play for the team if they needed him. He last played for the Eagles on October 4th.

4:33pm: The Colorado Avalanche got an outstanding performance from Adam Werner in his first NHL appearance last night, stopping all 40 shots in a shutout of the Winnipeg Jets. Werner had been called up to serve as a backup goaltender for Colorado, but ended up in the net when Pavel Francouz suffered an injury just 31 seconds into the game. Philipp Grubauer, the team’s regular starter was already missing the game due to an injury of his own.

Though details on Francouz’ injury are few, Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now has heard that the team will recall another goaltender. Who that might be is a bit of a mystery however, as the only other goaltender under an NHL contract in the organization is Antoine Bibeau, who is dealing with his own injury and has played just a single game for the Colorado Eagles this season.

Grubauer is nearing a return, but if he and Francouz both aren’t ready to go tomorrow night it poses a problem for the Avalanche. Either they can dress one of their injured goaltenders with no intent of playing him, giving the net to Werner regardless of what happens, or find another way of getting an NHL goalie on the roster in time. That could either be through trade or a free agent signing, including potentially extending an NHL contract to Hunter Miska, the other Eagles’ goaltender. Miska is currently on an AHL deal, signed after the Arizona Coyotes did not issue him a qualifying offer this summer.

The team did send Logan O’Connor down to the AHL today, opening up another roster spot. They could also place Francouz on injured reserve, but Grubauer would need to be activated in order to dress, even if there was no intent to put him in the game.

Minor Transactions: 7/13/19

While there are still a few notable unrestricted free agents left on the open market, some of the lesser-known ones continue to find new homes.  We’ll keep tabs on those minor moves here.

  • Coyotes UFA goaltender Hunter Miska has signed a one year contract with the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Avalanche announced. The 24-year-old had a 3.08 GAA with a .895 SV% in 25 appearances with Arizona’s AHL team last season while also making his NHL debut.  However, they opted not to tender him a qualifying offer last month.
  • Blackhawks goaltending prospect Ivan Nalimov has been dealt in the KHL as SKA St. Petersburg announced that they’ve acquired him from HK Sochi in exchange for the rights to Arizona goalie prospect Ivan Prosvetov. Chicago has expressed an interest in signing Nalimov in the past but the opportunity to play for a top team at home may be difficult for him to pass up.  Meanwhile, Prosvetov has already signed his entry-level deal but with several other goalies under contract already, the Coyotes could opt to loan him to Sochi for next season.
  • A report from the Russian website, hawk.ru (translation required), KHL’s Avangard Omsk has acquired the rights to defenseman Gustav Forsling from Sochi, whose rights are currently owned by the Carolina Hurricanes. The 23-year-old was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the Calvin de Haan trade last month. The blueliner is a restricted free agent. Forsling has played 84 games in two seasons with the Blackhawks but might have a hard time cracking the Hurricanes’ defensive corps this season.

Minor Transactions: 07/03/19

Even as several top NHL free agents remain unsigned, some teams have moved on to filling out their minor league depth charts for the upcoming season. We’ll keep track of some of the notable minor moves right here:

  • The ECHL Kelly Cup champion Newfoundland Growlers will get several players back next season, as the Toronto Marlies have re-signed Matt Bradley, Brady Ferguson, Zach O’Brien, Scott Pooley and Kristians Rubins to minor league deals. All five were part of the Growlers title run in their inaugural season in the ECHL. O’Brien, 27, was named playoff MVP after scoring 29 points in 23 postseason games.
  • The Colorado Eagles are loading up this offseason and now have another goaltender to add to the mix. Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic is reporting that former Arizona Coyotes prospect Hunter Miska will sign an AHL contract with Colorado. Miska, a former standout at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, made his NHL debut last season for the Coyotes but spent the majority of the season in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners, recording an .895 save percentage in 25 appearances.
  • Mark Divver reports that the Providence Bruins will bring back Christopher Breen for another season. The mammoth defenseman is an effective penalty killer and imposing physical presence, but hasn’t played an NHL game since the 2013-14 season.
  • The Manitoba Moose have agreed to terms with Alexis D’Aoust, Bobby Lynch, Cole Maier, Kristian Reichel, Graeme Craig, Jimmy Oligny and Hayden Shaw for the 2019-20 season, bringing back a good chunk of their organizational depth.
  • Former Arizona Coyotes and Edmonton Oilers prospect Kale Kessey has signed with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, the team announced. Kessey has largely played in the ECHL over the past three years, but the 2011 fourth-rounder will push for a regular role with Hershey. His penalty minutes are a thing to behold.

The deadline to issue a qualifying offer to pending restricted free agents comes down at 4pm today, making any player who has not received one eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. Hunter Miska Not Expected To Receive Qualifying Offer

It wasn’t so long ago that Hunter Miska was a hot goaltending prospect after an impressive freshman season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. After playing well in the BCHL and USHL, Miska had stepped right into the starting role with UMD and posted a 27-5-5 record en route to the National Championship game (which the Bulldogs ultimately lost). A finalist for the Mike Richter award as the nation’s top goaltender, Miska posted a .920 save percentage that season and recorded five shutouts. Several NHL teams came calling, before he eventually signed his two-year entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes.

Now after two disappointing years of professional hockey, Miska may be looking for a new organization. Craig Morgan of The Athletic is reporting that the team will not give Miska a qualifying offer this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Coyotes already have four goaltenders under contract and will certainly be issuing a qualifying offer to Adin Hill after he showed he may be ready for a bigger role in the near future. Miska meanwhile struggled in 2018-19, positing an .895 save percentage in 25 appearances for the Tucson Roadrunners.

Still, Miska did make his NHL debut this season in relief and there is reason to believe he can still be an effective professional goaltender. The 23-year old has rushed through several different development levels over the last few years and may just be lagging behind his new surroundings a bit. As an unrestricted free agent he will be able to pick his next destination carefully, and look for the best situation for his hockey future.
