Snapshots: Shea, Pavlychev, Brome

After 21 players became unrestricted free agents over the weekend, news is trickling in on where they will start their professional careers. The Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins have already snatched up a couple of the high profile names, but the Dallas Stars won’t be left out of the fun. Mark Divver of Rinkside Rhode Island reports that Ryan Shea is expected to sign with Dallas following his four-year career at Northeastern.

Shea, 23, was a fourth-round pick by the Blackhawks in 2015 and is coming off an impressive 31-point season as captain of the Huskies. The 6’1″ defenseman will start his career with the Stars organization, though it’s not clear exactly whether an NHL entry-level contract or an AHL pact is coming.

  • AHL contracts are what many of these unsigned draft picks end up getting, like Nikita Pavlychev who has signed a one-year deal with the Syracuse Crunch. The 23-year old center played four years for Penn State but ended up failing to reach a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins who drafted him in 2015. The Russian-born Pavlychev is a defensive stalwart, using his 6’7″ frame to lock down opposing forwards and disrupt passing lanes.
  • As expected, the Detroit Red Wings have loaned Mathias Brome to the SHL for the next few months. Like their other loans, Brome will return for NHL training camp as he looks to make the jump to North American professional hockey for the first time. The 26-year old only recently signed his first NHL contract after scoring 43 points for Orebro HK in 2019-20.

Gustav Lindstrom Loaned To Almtuna

The Detroit Red Wings have found another opportunity for one of their young prospects, this time loaning Gustav Lindstrom to Almtuna of the Swedish second league. Lindstrom, like many other Detroit youngsters including Mortiz Seider and Filip Zadina, is expected back for training camp in a few months.

Like Seider, Lindstrom is another exciting defense prospect for the Red Wings who could make an impact in the coming years. In fact, the 21-year-old did make his NHL debut this year, suiting up for 16 Detroit games during his first year in North America. The second-round pick from 2017 actually has experience at the SHL level as well, making it an interesting decision to send him back to the Allsvenskan. Detroit could be hoping that he will get huge minutes there in a league he had already graduated from while he prepares to make the NHL roster in November.

In 45 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, Lindstrom recorded just five points but was an encouraging presence on the blueline. The Red Wings philosophy for years was to “overripen” players in the minor leagues before bringing them up to the NHL, but given how poor the big club performed this season there may be more opportunity for young players. Getting his legs under him overseas will only give Lindstrom a headstart on the competition.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Evgeny Svechnikov To One-Year Extension

The Detroit Red Wings may not be playing in the 24-team tournament right now, but that doesn’t mean they front office isn’t active. Detroit has 12 restricted free agents to deal with during their offseason. Make that 11 as the team announced they have signed right wing Evgeny Svechnikov to a one-year extension. No terms were announced.

The 23-year-old just completed his entry-level contract and has the potential to develop into a solid player for the Red Wings although time is running out. Svechnikov had an impressive rookie year in the AHL during the 2016-17 season when he tallied 20 goals and 51 points for the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 6-foot-3 forward suffered a knee injury the following year and required ACL surgery to repair the damage. He hasn’t been the same since, scoring just 18 goals and 48 assists over the next two seasons in 108 AHL games. He did appear in four games for Detroit this season and 20 NHL games overall, but this year is likely going to be a key year for Svechnikov, who must prove he’s fully healthy and can contribute to Detroit’s lineup.

One thought is that Detroit may have signed him early in hopes they can find a European team to loan him to for the coming months until NHL training camps get underway, likely in mid-November. Svechnikov, the older brother of Carolina Hurricanes’ forward Andrei Svechnikov, was a first-round pick for Detroit back in 2015.

Moritz Seider Loaned To DEL

August 7: The Red Wings have made it official, announcing that Seider and Zadina have been loaned overseas. Seider is headed to Mannheim, while Zadina will join HC Ocelari Trinec for now. Both players should be back for training camp in North America at some point in November.

August 3: The Detroit Red Wings have a handful of exciting prospects in the minor leagues, but with the uncertainty surrounding the 2020-21 AHL season, they will need to find places to play for the next six months. Reports have already surfaced about Joe Veleno and Filip Zadina who could be headed to the Czech Republic to get into some game action, and now Moritz Seider is also headed overseas.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that Seider will be loaned to Adler Mannheim of the German DEL, though the Red Wings retain the ability to recall him at any time. Seider played for Mannheim before being selected sixth overall in 2019, but spent this season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.

There are few defensive prospects in the game that generate as much excitement as Seider, who was an immediate hit in Grand Rapids and has shown off his ability on the international stage. The 6’4″ right-handed shot is an all-situations defender that recorded 22 points in 49 games during his rookie season in the AHL. He is expected to challenge for a role on Detroit’s blueline before long, meaning he’ll likely be back in time to participate in NHL training camps in November.

Kasper Kotkansalo, another Red Wings draft pick, will also be headed overseas for the 2020-21 season. The third-round pick from 2017 has decided to leave Boston University and join Assat of the Finnish Liiga to continue his development. Kotkansalo, 21, had 25 points in 112 games for BU.

The NHL has released their schedule for Friday, giving us a slate of game fours that lasts all day. Things will get kicked off with the Florida Panthers trying to stave off elimination once again after defeating the New York Islanders earlier today. The full schedule will be (all times central):

  • Lukas Dostal will stay overseas “for the time being,” after being loaned back to Ilves in the Finnish Liiga by the Anaheim Ducks. Dostal won the Urpo Ylonen Award as the top goaltender in the league last season after posting a .928 save percentage in 43 games and jumped up many prospect rankings with the performance. Selected 85th overall in 2018, the 20-year old netminder will get a chance to play in North America eventually, but is obviously doing just find continuing his development in Finland.
  • More interesting perhaps on the international wire is Mathias Brome, whose name was brought up in a report from Sweden. The 26-year old forward signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings in April but could end up playing in Sweden for Orebro HK until training camp begins. That decision hasn’t been finalized yet according to the report from hockeynews.se, but certainly would give Brome a chance to keep skating while waiting for his opportunity in Detroit. After scoring 43 points in 52 games this season, he’d certainly be welcome back into the Orebro lineup for as long as they can keep him.

Maple Leafs’ Eddie Shack Dies At Age 83

He played 16 seasons with six different NHL teams, but Eddie Shack was considered to be a Toronto Maple Leaf. The team announced that the forward, who helped lead the Toronto franchise to four Stanley Cup Championships in the 1960s, passed away Saturday after a long fight with throat cancer. He was 83 years old.

Shack was a popular player in his time in the NHL, who held several nicknames throughout his career, including “The Entertainer,” “The Nose,” and even had a novelty song written about him called “Clear the Track, Here Comes Shack.” However, his on the ice play, especially in his years with the Maple Leafs was what stood out. Shack played nine seasons with Toronto, including a seven-year run from 1960 to 1967 where he played on four Stanley Cup title teams in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. He also scored the game-winning goal in 1963 to capture the cup and was well known for his celebrations on the ice after scoring a goal.

He did get traded five different times throughout his career and spent time with a number of other teams, including the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins, before finally wrapping up his career with two more years in Toronto before retiring after the 1974-75 season. He was even almost traded to the Detroit Red Wings in a package in 1960 for Red Kelly, but the trade was cancelled after Kelly opted to retire rather than be traded. Shack played in 1,047 games, scoring 239 goals and accumulating 1,439 penalty minutes over the course of his career. He was just a handful of players to score 20 or more goals for five different teams.

Red Wings Could Loan Joe Veleno To The Czech Extraliga To Start Next Season

Earlier this week, it was reported that Red Wings winger Filip Zadina was in talks to start next season with HC Ocelari Trinec of the Czech Extraliga.  It turns out he might not be the only Detroit youngster doing so as MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that center Joe Veleno is also a part of the discussions with Trinec.  The 20-year-old played his first professional season exclusively in the AHL but it’s worth noting that he was one of the youngest players in the league as he still had junior eligibility.  While Veleno got off to a slow start, he was able to rebound to put up a respectable 23 points (11-12-23) in 54 games before the pandemic hit while collecting six points (1-5-6) in as many games at the World Juniors.  A first-round pick (30th overall) in 2018, loaning Veleno over would allow him to get a couple of extra months of development before returning to North America when the 2020-21 season gets underway.

Detroit’s Filip Zadina May Begin Season In Czech Republic

The Detroit Red Wings played their last game, which ended up being their season finale, back on March 10. Rookie forward Filip Zadina last suited up for the team on February 1. Even if the NHL’s makeshift schedule for the 2020 postseason and off-season play out exactly according to plan, neither the Red Wings nor Zadina are likely to play another competitive game until December. As a result, it should come as no surprise that there are whispers that Zadina could begin the season elsewhere this fall given the delayed starts of the NHL and AHL. The possible destination for the top prospect should not shock anyone either.

HC Ocelari Trinec of the Czech Extraliga all but confirmed that talks are ongoing with Zadina and Detroit earlier today, responding to a tweet that alleged that both Zadina and Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman were interested in getting the young forward started early in his native Czech Republic. The club stated that they too are “currently discussing the arrival” of Zadina (translation). The fit makes plenty of sense; Ocelari is a top team in the Extraliga and calls Zadina’s own father, Marek Zadina, an assistant coach. Zadina would have the comforts of home and a familiar face on the bench while also competing on a strong roster in a talented league alongside the likes of fellow prospects Milos Roman and Nick Malik.

While a number of young players, particularly those on the seven non-playoff teams, may discuss starting their seasons early overseas, Zadina could use it more than most. The 2018 No. 6 overall pick has yet to break out in the pros as expected and a jump-start against weaker competition in the Czech Republic could be the kickstart needed. Additionally, Zadina was limited to just 49 games overall this season between Detroit and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and could simply use some more time on the ice. Getting his legs under him and up to speed early could give Zadina an advantage entering the 2020-21 season that might lead to his much-anticipated emergence as a top option for the Red Wings.

Danil Gushchin, Albin Grewe Sign In OHL

Two notable NHL prospects and recent CHL Import Draft selections have joined the ranks of the OHL. 2020 draft eligible forward Danil Gushchin, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 Import Draft, has signed with the Niagara Ice Dogs, while forward Albin Grewe, a 2019 third-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, has signed with the Saginaw Spirit.

Gushchin’s move signals a shift in his developmental path. A consensus second-round pick in the coming NHL Entry Draft, Gushchin is a very talented forward with great speed and stick skills. The one glaring concern about his game is his size: Gushchin stands just 5’8” and weighs in at around 160 lbs. For this reason, it seemed the Russian winger was favoring the collegiate development path, which can often be better for undersized players. The No. 7 overall pick in the CHL Import Draft last year, Gushchin instead opted to play another season in the USHL with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, preserving his NCAA eligibility. However, with questions about the likelihood of a college hockey season, Gushchin may have decided that the best choice for his development was to improve his level of play next season and the OHL was his safest bet. The question now, and one that NHL scouting staffs will have to decide, is whether the size and skill that made him a point-per-game player in the USHL will translate to the OHL and eventually to the pros.

As for Grewe, the move to the OHL is not unexpected following a disappointing 2019-20 campaign. A skilled and pesky two-way winger out of Sweden, Grewe was considered a great value for the Red Wings at No. 66 overall last year. He was expected to play a larger role with the SHL’s Djurgardens IF this year after getting into 15 games last season but failing to record a point. Instead, he was limited to just 19 games and managed just one point, while his production fell off considerably in the junior SuperElit as well. In fact, the only real statistical growth this year for Grewe was in penalty minutes. Grewe needs to work more on his offensive game and skill development and has a better chance of doing that playing meaningful minutes against his peers at the junior level rather than bouncing back and forth from a pro team where he was clearly not ready to compete. Although Saginaw waited to select Grewe until the second round of the Import Draft, both sides were happy to sign on for next year. Now Detroit fans just have to hope that the talented forward can get back on track with his new team and league.

Edmonton’s Mike Green Opts Out Of Playoffs

With the recent release of the Edmonton Oilers training camp roster, the news has also come out that defenseman Mike Green has chosen to opt out of the Return to Play Plan, according to Edmonton Journal’s Derek Van Diest. The 34 year old, acquired at the trade deadline from the Detroit Red Wings, was brought on board to bring veteran experience to the team’s defense for their playoff run.

“Due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and after much consideration, I’ve decided for deeply personal family health reasons, not to participate in the return to play,” Green said in a statement. “This has been a hard decision knowing I’m going to miss the opportunity to compete in the playoffs with a Stanley Cup contender. I wish the best of luck to the guys and I appreciate the Edmonton Oilers support.”

Green was supposed to step in on the team’s third pairing defense after being picked up for Kyle Brodziak and a conditional fourth-rounder. That conditional fourth-rounder would have become a third-round pick had Green played in 50 percent of the team’s playoff games, which will obviously not happen now. In the end, he only played in two games for the Oilers after sustaining a knee injury after that second game that knocked him out until play was suspended.

Edmonton will look to Kris Russell and Matthew Benning to play on that third pairing. However, there is also opportunity for some of the younger Oilers to win a spot, including Evan Bouchard and William Lagesson. Bouchard, the team’s 2018 first-round pick might be able to win a spot in the Oilers’ lineup after a solid rookie campaign in the AHL this season, while Lagesson did manage to get into eight games with Edmonton earlier this season.
