Devils Plan To Make A Splash This Summer

No one could have expected that the New Jersey Devils would improve by 16 wins from last season to this season, transforming from a bottom feeder to a playoff team. The team added impact rookies Nico Hischier and Will Butcher and traded for defenseman Sami Vatanen, but also lost Adam Henrique in that deal and watched 2016-17 top-six forwards Mike Cammalleri and P.A. Parenteau depart. Yet, the team took a major leap forward with only a marginal improvement to their roster. Hoping for a repeat in that trend, NJ.com’s Chris Ryan reports that GM Ray Shero has been given the “green light” by the Devils to spend in free agency this summer.

New Jersey enters the 2018 off-season with substantial cap space. A bottom-five spender this season, the team is likely to lose Patrick Maroon, Michael Grabner, Drew Stafford, and Jimmy Hayes to free agency, which will open up even more room. They will also finally be rid of Ryane Clowe’s cap hit. Even if the team was to hang on to defenseman John Moore, goaltender Eddie Lack, or forward Brian Gibbons, they would still have more than enough space to make a significant splash this summer.

Ryan addresses several players who Devils fans are intrigued by in his mailbag. He begins by throwing water on the idea that New Jersey will be in hot pursuit of John Tavares if he hits the open market. Seeing as Tavares will command a seven-year deal that could approach nine figures, Ryan rules the Devils out as a destination. New Jersey has its star center of the future in Hischier and must pay he and Hart finalist Taylor Hall in the next few years. However, Ryan does not shy away from any other recommended targets.

Among those other players the Devils could pursue are defenseman John Carlson, who would be the biggest name on the market if Tavares re-signs with the Islanders, fellow blue liners Mike Green and Calvin de Haan, and big winger James van Riemsdyk. Ryan rules out a reunion with Ilya Kovalchuk, but New Jersey could also be a destination for other stars of yesteryear like Joe Thornton or Rick Nash. Evander Kane, Paul Stastny, David Perron and James Neal are other top names who could wind up in Newark.

Ryan does add that the Devils may be content to sign just one of the big-name players on this summer’s free agent market. Given the luck he had making a blockbuster trade this year, Shero could surely explore the trade market instead of exclusively signing free agents. He may also want to give time to forward prospects like Michael McLeod and Joey Anderson, after Hischier, Jesper Bratt, and Blake Coleman found success this year. It will be a busy off-season one way or another for New Jersey and will continue to be a fun process of building a contender for team members and fans alike.

Jason Robertson Signs With Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars have signed one of their top prospects, inking Jason Robertson to a three-year entry-level contract. Robertson was eliminated from the OHL playoffs last week when his Kingston Frontenacs were knocked out by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Robertson was the Stars’ second-round pick last June, 39th-overall. The 18-year old winger had quite the year in the OHL, scoring 40+ goals for the second consecutive season and posting a career-high 87 points. That offensive performance doesn’t come like many of his skilled contemporaries, who dart in and out of traffic to create chances. Instead, Robertson uses his big frame to protect the puck down low and take it hard towards the net. Critiqued for his skating ability, he’ll need to continue to improve his stride and quickness at the next level.

Fortunately, his strength on the puck, defensive awareness and hard shot make up for any speed deficiencies and create a nice professional profile for Robertson moving forward. He’ll likely return to Kingston next season, where he could become an even more impressive offensive threat as he fills into that 6’3″ frame even more. He already led the entire OHL in shots on goal this season, something he could repeat playing alongside Gabriel Vilardi if they both return to the junior ranks.

Boston Bruins Sign Connor Clifton To Two-Year Contract

The Boston Bruins have inked minor league defenseman Connor Clifton to a two-year entry-level contract, which will carry an average annual value of $725K. Clifton played this season with the Providence Bruins on an AHL contract, after leaving Quinnipiac University as a free agent in the spring of 2017.

From all accounts, Clifton took several large steps forward in his development this year and is now showing that there might be a higher ceiling than originally believed. First selected in the fifth round by the Arizona (then Phoenix) Coyotes in 2013, Clifton didn’t sign with the team despite showing relatively well in his four years in the NCAA.

There was interest in him immediately, as he signed with the Providence Bruins quickly after becoming a free agent in August. The knock on him was that there was a limit to his potential, and that his physical style might break down his somewhat undersized frame. This season in the AHL he recorded 13 points in 54 games, which actually ranked him third on the Providence defense corps.

If he’s ever to make the NHL, he’ll have to keep developing an all-around game that doesn’t rely on big hits to make an impact. Puck movement, defensive zone coverage and a relentless work ethic will have to be Clifton’s calling cards to crack the Boston lineup. At 23, he’ll have to take those steps quickly or be labelled as a minor league player before long.

2018 WHL Bantam Draft Results

Though they’re not quite as noteworthy as the NHL Entry Draft, junior drafts can give fans a glimpse of the future of professional hockey. Today, the WHL held their 2018 Bantam Draft where the Edmonton Oil Kings held the first-overall pick.

With that pick Edmonton took Dylan Guenther, a 15-year old center who put up huge numbers in the CSSBHL. 103 points in just 30 games, he easily led the league in scoring and will now try to continue that success in the CHL. Eligible for selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, we’ll surely hear his name a few more times over the next few years.

Carolina Hurricanes Trade Marcus Kruger To Arizona Coyotes

Though it’s not often you see a trade go down during the playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes have traded Marcus Kruger and a 2018 third-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Jordan Martinook and a 2018 fourth-round pick. Carolina will also retain 10% of Kruger’s salary in 2018-19.

There are a few things to break down in this trade, not the least of which being that the Hurricanes made the deal despite not having a GM in place. While owner Thomas Dundon continues to search for the next person to lead his hockey club, Don Waddell is operating as interim GM, along with help from his old friend Rick Dudley who was hired recently.

The second is that the Hurricanes won’t really be saving much salary in the swap. Though Kruger carries a $3.08MM cap hit, the actual salary owed to him next season is just $2.3MM. Martinook himself is set to earn $1.8MM, and with the added 10% the two notoriously cheap teams come off spending about the same amount. Instead, from Carolina’s point of view this deal seems to be ridding themselves of a forward that they had no plans on using next season. After all, Kruger had already cleared waivers earlier this season.

That fact is another interesting thing to note in the deal, as Kruger was available to any team earlier this year when the Hurricanes waived and then sent him to the minor leagues. The 27-year old center ended up playing just 48 games for Carolina, scoring six points in the process and generally being ineffective. Some of that might have to do with the hernia that Craig Morgan of AZ Sports reports he recently had surgery on, which had been “nagging him a while.”

If Kruger can return to the 25-point depth center that he once was in Chicago, the Coyotes will have a useful player on their hands that can help the penalty kill and add some experience. If he can’t find that level, they still move their draft pick up a round in exchange for Martinook, who may have not had role with the team next season anyway.

In all, this is a swap of two contracts that didn’t have much of a future in their previous organizations. Perhaps Kruger can find his game again in Arizona alongside former teammate Niklas Hjalmarsson, and maybe Martinook can be a useful depth player. We’ll have to wait to see how the rest of the offseason shakes out to really see what each team had planned.

Snapshots: Torrey, Quinn, Predators

The hockey world is saddened today, as it learned of the passing of Bill Torrey. A legendary executive, Torrey was the architect of the New York Islanders dynasty and first GM of the Florida Panthers. Not only was he an outstanding general manager and president, but he was beloved by nearly the entire hockey community. A outpouring of grief has come from former players, media and executives, all sharing their favorite stories and memories.

At PHR, as with the rest of the hockey world, we extend our condolences to the Torrey family and friends. He was 83.

  • David Quinn, coach of Boston University, has been rumored as a potential candidate for several NHL vacancies including that of the New York Rangers. Today, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports that though he hasn’t told the Rangers, Quinn has indicated to friends that he’ll return to BU next season. Quinn is also set to coach Team USA at the World Juniors next year, something he obviously wouldn’t be able to do should he take an NHL job.
  • The Nashville Predators look like they’ll shake up their lineup for Game 4, inserting Yannick Weber and Scott Hartnell. Adam Vingan of the Tennessean reports that Alexei Emelin and Kevin Fiala were both on the ice late doing extra work, and appear to be coming out for the matchup against the Winnipeg Jets. The Predators are down 2-1 in the series and need to find a way to steal a game in Winnipeg to even the series, or face elimination on home ice Saturday night.

New York Rangers Agree To Terms With Ville Meskanen

The New York Rangers are certainly working hard to improve their organizational depth, and have inked another European free agent. Ville Meskanen has agreed to terms with the club, on what will be a two-year entry-level contract.

After bringing in Michael Lindqvist yesterday, the Rangers have once again signed a skilled forward that could be ready for an NHL role in short order. Meskanen broke out this season in Finland scoring 44 points in 48 games at the country’s highest level, finishing third in the entire league with 24 goals. He’s a talented offensive player, capable of scoring on every shot he takes and can find open ice regularly.

Though there is no guarantee that Lindqvist or Meskanen will make the NHL, the Rangers seem focused on adding talent wherever they can get it. After trading away big parts of their team over the last calendar year, they’ve started a rebuild that could be shorter than many believe. Using their vast financial assets to add lottery tickets like these European free agents is an easy way to try and find more talent, and comes with relatively no risk.

The only thing the Rangers will have to worry about is contract slots, as no team is allowed to carry more than 50 at one time. They currently have 37 signed for next season, but still have 12 restricted free agents in the organization. While some of those may not be qualified, the team is getting close to the limit and will have to carefully choose who to award contracts to, and when to do it.

Zach Werenski Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Out 5-6 Months

According to Brian Hedger of NHL.com, Columbus Blue Jackets star defenseman Zach Werenski underwent shoulder surgery this morning and will be out for five to six months. The issue apparently had bothered Werenski since October 30th, when he first suffered the injury. In a statement, Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen explained the decision to undergo surgery:

Zach has been dealing with this injury since early in the season and while he was able to play through it, our medical team determined that surgery was the best option at this time. The surgery went very well and the expectation is Zach will be ready to play by the start of the season or shortly thereafter

Five months would allow Werenski to start the season on time with the Blue Jackets, but it means he will at least miss all of training camp. Columbus is dealing with another early exit from the playoffs, and will be trying to overcome the other top teams in the Metropolitan. Losing one of their top pairing defensemen for any length of time is disruptive to that goal, and if he misses the first whole month of the season they could find themselves in an early hole.

Fortunately for the Blue Jackets, they also have Seth Jones and the rest of an impressive defense corps that can come to the rescue. Just like the Anaheim Ducks signed Francois Beauchemin to help deal with injuries to Sami Vatanen and Hampus Lindholm to begin the year, you can bet that Columbus will ensure their depth is fortified this summer.

The fact that he was dealing with a shoulder injury all season could explain why his point totals dropped from 47 to 37 this season, but certainly should make Columbus fans excited for what comes next. If this season’s 20-year old Werenski—nearly 23 minutes a night and excellent even-strength production—was him at less than 100%, one can only dream about what he’ll be in a few years. Werenski is eligible for an extension on July 1st, and could be locked up long-term this summer.

Morning Notes: Free Agency, Veilleux, Sweden

Though we’re only partway through the second round of the playoffs, many fans have already started dreaming about what could happen on July 1st in free agency. Craig Custance of The Athletic (subscription required) gives us an update on each of his top-20 free agents, including superstar John Tavares.

Obviously Custance can’t handicap a market, but he does mention the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues as potential pursuers if the New York Islanders’ captain does hit free agency. Tavares would have almost every team checking in should he get to the negotiating window a few days before July 1st.

  • The Halifax Mooseheads have hired a new head coach for the 2018-19 season. Eric Veilleux will be behind the bench for the QMJHL squad next season, fresh off his own departure from the Colorado Avalanche AHL affiliate. Veilleux has plenty of experience in the Q, having played there as a junior and coached for nearly a decade.
  • The IIHF handed out several suspensions yesterday to the Swedish World Junior squad, after the incidents that occurred after this year’s gold medal game. Players and coaches removed their medals before the post-game event was over, including captain Lias Andersson who tossed it into the crowd in frustration. Interestingly though, of the players suspended only goaltender Olle Eriksson Ek could realistically return to the tournament. The others—Andersson, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Jesper Boqvist and Rasmus Dahlin—have either graduated through age or are expected to be in the NHL full-time next year. Perhaps the biggest hit will be the coaching suspensions, which includes a three-game ban for head coach Tomas Monten.

Poll: Was The Tom Wilson Punishment Appropriate?

Last night the hammer came down on Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson, when the Department of Player Safety suspended him for three playoff games. That matches Nazem Kadri as the longest suspension of these playoffs, and could potentially remove Wilson from the rest of the second round matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The league took several factors into account, including Wilson’s history—he’s already served two suspensions since last season—and Zach Aston-Reese’ resulting injury. Some have to wonder though if Wilson’s other incidents this postseason also factored into the decision. Wilson was involved in hits on both Brian Dumoulin and Alexander Wennberg that were reviewed by the league, but deemed not worth of supplementary discipline.

In this case, the responses to the suspension have been all over the map. Some believe the hit wasn’t even worthy of a suspension, while others think Wilson should be serving even longer for his repeated physical play.

Now, we’d like to quantify those beliefs. Vote below on whether you think the penalty was too harsh, too light or just right. Explain in the comments how long or short you believe it should have been, or if you think he shouldn’t have been punished at all.

These have been a playoffs full of suspensions, and it doesn’t look like they’ll end here.
