Draft Day Notes: Ruff, Markov, Phaneuf

While the New York Rangers continue to select the next wave of talent in the NHL draft, the front office is also busy working on the NHL coaching staff. Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that Lindy Ruff will join the team as an assistant coach, replacing Jeff Beukeboom who will move into a scouting role with the club.

Ruff of course has decades of experience as a head coach in the league, with his latest stint ending in Dallas at the end of the year. This will be the first time he takes an assistant role since 1997, and will be mostly in charge of the defense group.

  • Though it’s been clear there is interest between Andrei Markov and the Montreal Canadiens, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports is reporting that Markov now wants a two-year contract. That could be too long for the Canadiens, who are set to give Carey Price a huge raise next summer and have to make sure they spend every dollar appropriately. That’s not even mentioning that Markov will turn 39 this season, and at any point could fall off a cliff in terms of production. The cap hit would have to be very reasonable for the long-time Montreal defender to get those two years.
  • Before the Travis Hamonic deal went down, Bob McKenzie of TSN tweeted out some details about Dion Phaneuf continuing to draw trade interest from teams that aren’t on his approved list. Remember that Phaneuf would not waive his no-movement clause for the expansion draft, and though Pierre Dorion has had chats with his representation, there is no movement on the trade list as of yet.

Calgary Flames Acquire Travis Hamonic From New York Islanders

While the second half of the 2017 draft is underway, the Calgary Flames are working on their NHL squad. The Flames have acquired Travis Hamonic and a conditional 2019 fourth-round pick from the New York Islanders. The draft pick could be pushed to 2020. In return, Calgary will send a 2018 first-round pick, 2018 second-round pick, and a conditional 2019 second-round pick, that could also be pushed to 2020. The conditions depend on another pre-existing trade with Arizona, which could end up in the Coyotes first acquiring the Flames 2019 second-round pick.Travis Hamonic

Hamonic’s name has been in the news for the last few days, with the Islanders holding firm at an ask of two first-round picks. While they didn’t get quite that value, they came very close. The Islanders, who protected five defensemen in the expansion draft, are hoping that Ryan Pulock can make the jump full time next season and replace some of Hamonic’s minutes.

The 26-year old Hamonic has logged at least 20 minutes a night in every year since he debuted as a 20-year old, and is an excellent two-way defensmen capable of contributing at both ends of the rink. His career high of 33 points will be difficult to duplicate in Calgary without extensive powerplay time, but he fills out their top-4 quite nicely.

It would seem now that Michael Stone is no longer in the Flames plans, as the pending free agent would have to take on a third-pairing role. He’s one of the top defenders set to hit the open market even with his injury history, and would likely be looking for a bigger role. After fitting in quite nicely with the Flames down the stretch, they’ll expect even more of Hamonic as the last part of what has become an excellent top-4.

Calgary is paying a lot, but with a team that believes they can compete for the Stanley Cup as soon as this season, they believe that it’s worth it. Hamonic is under contract for three more seasons at a very reasonable $3.86MM, making him an attractive option to any team.

For the Islanders, this does seem to be a trade in the opposite direction as the earlier Jordan Eberle acquisition, but easily could flip the draft picks for more help in the short-term. Either way, getting that much value back for a player who you believe you can replace internally is a a solid move. The Islanders still have an effective defensive group, but also must think about the upcoming extension for John Tavares.

It’s an interesting balance, of building a winning team to entice him to sign, and leaving yourself enough cap space to get him into the salary structure. With Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Shane Prince and Alan Quine all hitting various versions of free agency next season, the Islanders have to spend their money wisely.

Andy Andreoff Signs Two-Year Deal With Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed Andy Andreoff to a two-year contract worth $678K each season. Andreoff was set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

The 26-year old Andreoff was a third-round pick of the Kings in 2011, and though he’s made it to the NHL he has little impact there. In 114 career games he has just 15 points.  The winger had thumb surgery this season, robbing him of much of the year.

The Kings now have 11 restricted free agents to deal with this offseason, and qualifying offers are due on Monday evening. If they are not issued one, each RFA will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Best Players Available On Day Two Of NHL Draft

Two of the biggest slides in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft belonged to Eeli Tolvanen and Klim Kostin. Tolvanen, a Finnish winger ranked #17 by International Scouting Services, was regarded as one of the top offensive talents of the draft thanks to his heavy shot and great speed. However, recent news that Boston College admissions turned him down for 2017-18 enrollment coupled with concerns over his lack of any defensive ability sent him tumbling. Kostin, a big winger from Russia ranked #16 by International Scouting Services, fell victim to the “Russian factor” as well as a lack of a 2016-17 resume due to injury, which overshadowed his potential to be an elite power forward. Both players were considered likely top ten picks at one point, but for a while looked like they would drop out of the first round. Unfortunately for the lowly teams at the top of the second round, Tolavanen was selected by the Nashville Predators at #30 and the St. Louis Blues traded up to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ final first round slot at #31 and took Kostin. So who is still available? Here are the ten best prospects remaining on Day Two:

Nicolas Hague
Position: Left Defense
Team: Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)
ISS Ranking: #18
Scouting Report: The closest thing to a top-pair shutdown defenseman in this draft, Hague will never be a smooth-skating puck-mover at the NHL level, but possesses the defensive instincts and vision to dominate the defensive zone. At 6’6″, 214-lbs. already, Hague is a big kid who will fill out into a monster on the back end, equipped with a long reach and powerful checking ability. He also packs a punch with his slap shot.

Isaac Ratcliffe
Position: Left Wing
Team: Guelph Storm (OHL)
ISS Ranking: #22
Scouting Report: At 6’5″, 203-lbs., Ratcliffe is bigger than any player selected in the first round, nevertheless forward. However, don’t let the size deceive you; Ratcliffe is a powerful skater and has great hands for someone of his stature. He simply has a lot of frame to fill out before he can put it all together and be an elite power forward.

Kole Lind
Position: Right Wing
Team: Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
ISS Ranking: #24
Scouting Report: Lind is not a flashy, high-skill player, but he is consistent and efficient. Equipped with one of the more accurate shots in this draft class, Lind puts in the effort, wins battles, and puts up points. He has the ability to be a solid albeit unexciting top-six forward down the road.

Conor Timmins
Position: Right Defense
Team: Soo Greyhounds (OHL)
ISS Ranking: #29
Scouting Report: After a run on talented, two-way defenseman in Round One, Timmins is still on the board. A top-end puck-mover who can start the rush, make a great outlet pass, and more-or-less play mistake-free transition defense, Timmins offensive ability is unquestioned. He is an asset on the power play and capable of playing major even strength minutes. However, concerns remain about his compete level and reluctance to play physically and set the tone of the game.

Winnipeg Jets Re-Sign Ben Chiarot

The Winnipeg Jets were professional multi-taskers last night. Not long after drafting Kristian Vesalainen 24th overall in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, the “True North” locked up one of their own in defenseman Ben Chiarot. Renaud Lavoie of TVA reported the extension close at close to 11 PM CT in Chicago, as the Jets’ brass were working into the wee hours of the night. Chiarot, an impending restricted free agent, will return for two more years at $1.4MM per season.

Winnipeg has already been masterful this season at keeping their defense intact. They first convinced veteran Toby Enstrom to waive his No-Movement Clause, allowing him to be exposed in Wednesday’s Expansion Draft so that Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers, and Jacob Trouba could be protected. Then, upon hearing rumors that the Vegas Golden Knights were considering selecting Enstrom, the Jets struck a deal to move down 13 spots in the NHL Draft, swapping their #13 overall pick with Columbus’ #24 overall pick, which Vegas had already acquired. Now, having survived Expansion with all of their top-four defenseman, Winnipeg has locked up their #5 at a reasonable rate over the next two years of the 26-year-old’s career. With youngster Josh Morrissey  and veteran Mark Stuart also in the fold, it seem that the Jets will enter free agency next week with a solid seven on the blue line and no need for concern.

Chiarot, a big stay-at-home defenseman, also put up a career-high 12 points in Winnipeg last year. In 59 games, the 6’3″, 219-lb. blue liner registered two goals and ten assists, all at even strength. While Chiarot may not be an asset on the power play, he is one of the team’s top penalty killers. Chiarot can check and block shots very well, though the Jets wouldn’t mind if he did more of both. They have two more years to work on rounding out the still-developing defender’s game before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2019. Don’t be surprised to see Chiarot on a short leash over the course of this new contract, as Winnipeg already sports strong depth on defense with top prospects Logan Stanley and Luke Green on their way up sooner rather than later as well.

Philadelphia Flyers Trade Brayden Schenn To St. Louis

The Philadelphia Flyers pulled off perhaps the biggest shocker of the draft, trading Brayden Schenn to the St. Louis Blues for Jori Lehtera, the 27th-overall pick and a conditional first-round pick next year. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that if the 2018 pick happens to be in the top 10, St. Louis would have the option to push it to 2019. If they do so, Philadelphia would also gain a third-rounder in 2020.

The Flyers used the 27th pick to select Morgan Frost, son of former Maple Leafs in-house announcer Andy Frost and forward from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhouds of the OHL. Frost put up 62 points in 68 games for the Greyhounds but is still very undersized and will need to develop his all-around game.

Lehtera is coming off an extremely disappointing season in St. Louis, in which he scored just 22 points. He’s heading into year two of a contract that pays him $4.7MM per season, a number that hopes he’s more of the 44-point player he showed in his first year. Philadelphia will hope they can turn him back into that, but with a system now flooded with centers after trading for Valtteri Filppula at the deadline and selecting Nolan Patrick tonight, it’s not clear what his role will be.

Schenn though is clearly the prize of the deal, as clearly the best player involved for the time being. Schenn scored 25 goals again last season and has developed into one of the more effective power forwards in the league. He was unstoppable with the man advantage, scoring 28 of his 55 points on the powerplay. Now traded twice before he turns 26, Schenn is locked up for three more seasons at $5.13MM and immediately fills some of the center concerns for the Blues. It was a hefty price to pay, with two firsts going the other way but he’ll help St. Louis in their quest for a Stanley Cup once again next year.

Having Schenn allows the Blues to move Patrik Berglund back down to a third-line center and keep both Vladimir Sobotka and Alex Steen on the wings. That upgrade will make their top-9 one of the best groups in the league.

Ducks Re-Sign Patrick Eaves To Three-Year Deal

Per Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register on Twitter, the Anaheim Ducks have re-signed Patrick Eaves to a three-year deal. The LA Times’ Curtis Zupke tweets that the announcement was made prior to the draft starting. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun tweets that the AAV is around $3.15MM and broke the deal down further here.

Eaves had a career year, starting with the Dallas Stars before being traded to Anaheim mid-season. The 33-year-old winger had 37 points  (21-16) with the Stars and added another 14 (11-3) once he went to the Ducks. Eaves suffered an injury in the playoffs that ended his run after seven games, but apparently, Anaheim had seen enough, inclined to re-up him for another three years.

New Jersey Selects Nico Hischier With 1st Overall Pick

The New Jersey Devils took  center Nico Hischier with the first overall pick in the draft.

New Jersey took Hischier over Brandon Wheat Kings captain Nolan Patrick, which isn’t surprising as many had the 18-year-old center eclipsing Patrick. Hischier was rumored for months to have overtaken Patrick in the draft thanks to a strong showing at the world juniors and throughout the season with Halifax. It also marks the first Swiss player to be chosen #1 overall in the NHL Draft. Hischier’s stock had been rising throughout the season, and his pairing with Taylor Hall could produce one of the more lethal scoring threats in the league as he develops.

With the Moosehead, Hischier put up 86 points (38-48) in 57 games.
