Andrew Hammond Will Require Hip Surgery, Out Three Months

February 27, 2017 at 11:37 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Ottawa Senators goaltending depth got a little weaker today after Andrew Hammond was ruled out for the next three months. He’ll need surgery on a torn labrum in his hip, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The Senators will go with Craig Anderson and Mike Condon for the rest of the season.

Since his dream debut for the Senators in 2015 going 20-1-2 down the stretch and leading them into the playoffs, Hammond hasn’t been able to replicate that play or consistency. Bounced back and forth between the NHL and minor leagues the last two seasons, he struggled mightily this year filling in for Anderson and Condon. Now 29 with one year remaining on his contract, it’s unclear what the Senators plan on doing in net going forward.

With Anderson signed through next year, and the team considering a long-term extension for Condon, they would have three goaltenders making substantial money under contract. He may stay buried in the minors, or potentially bought-out this summer. For a player who once looked like a future starting goaltender in the NHL, it has been a long and painful fall to where he is now. Perhaps a summer of rehab and a new start somewhere else would get him back on track.

Greg McKegg, Zac Dalpe Claimed Off Waivers

February 27, 2017 at 11:06 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, the Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed Greg McKegg off waivers from the Florida Panthers, and the Columbus Blue Jackets claimed Zac Dalpe from the Minnesota Wild. Both Ryan Carter and Teemu Pulkkinen cleared today.

McKegg will join a crowded group in Tampa Bay after the team called up both Adam Erne and Yanni Gourde this morning as well. The former third-round pick may be another option for the team should the decide to trade any forwards before Wednesday’s trade deadline. Though he hasn’t found much success at the NHL level thus far in his career, he does provide some center depth for a team that has an expiring contract in Brian Boyle likely on the market.

Minnesota had been trying to slip Dalpe through waivers to reset his clock before the Wednesday trade deadline according to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, but will now have to give him up to the Columbus Blue Jackets who are dealing with some injuries up front and could use some help. The former Carolina Hurricanes second-round pick has bounced around the AHL ranks throughout his career and will hope for an extended look at the NHL level with his new team.

As Russo points out, the Wild are willing to trade Pulkkinen after he cleared waivers, and a team could immediately install the elite AHL scorer into their minor league system. Should they find a taker, he’ll likely not command a big price after the Wild acquired him off waivers from the Red Wings earlier this seaosn.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Nick Jensen To Two-Year Extension

February 27, 2017 at 10:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings locked up a player today instead of shipping him out, inking defenseman Nick Jensen to a two-year extension. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that the deal is worth a total of $1.625MM over the two seasons, split $800K/$825K. Nick Jensen

Jensen was selected by the Red Wings in the fifth round of the 2009 draft, and slowly worked his way through the system over the past few years. This season he has shown that his smooth skating and puck movement had developed enough to be a positive at the NHL level, and would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The 26-year old will now provide a cheap option for the team on the back end as they try to do a quick rebuild.

Though he will also likely fulfill the expansion draft requirement for defense, this seems more to be a deal locking up a home-grown soldier that has done everything asked of him over the years. Detroit has a long tradition of forcing players to make their mark in Grand Rapids before giving them a shot in the NHL, something that Jensen has done very well over the past two years. While he is by no means a star or shutdown defender, capable right handed shots aren’t the cheapest things to come by.

The team will likely now turn their attention to—if it wasn’t already—Brendan Smith and the possibility of trading him in the next couple of days. The pending UFA has been rumored to be sought after by a handful of teams including the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs, though it’s not clear that any team has put forth an offer.

Brandon Manning Suspended Two Games For Illegal Check

February 27, 2017 at 10:13 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Department of Player Safety has announced a two game suspension for Brandon Manning for his hit on Jake Guentzel this weekend. Manning was not penalized on the play, but the league determined it was clearly interference that made “substantial head contact”.

The league did take into account that Manning had never been suspended or fined prior to this incident, but that because he delivered a late blow to the head of the Penguins forward it needed supplementary discipline. He will be eligible to return to the Flyers’ lineup on Saturday against the Washington Capitals.

This is the fourth suspension this month, and third this season for the Flyers. Radko Gudas and Dale Weise were given six and three games respectively for their illegal hits in October. Manning has just 130 games under his belt in the NHL but has built a reputation for delivering big open ice hits if players have their heads down. This time, he just picked the wrong Penguin to target, as Guentzel had gotten rid of the puck well before contact was made.

When Will The Buffalo Sabres Have Their Renaissance?

February 27, 2017 at 10:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

For Buffalo Sabres fans this season must be hell. They have seen their team rocked by injuries all season long, taking what is a talented squad and sapping them of their playoff potential. The consecutive losses over the weekend to bottom-dwelling Arizona and Colorado has all but assured that they are sellers at this week’s trade deadline instead of buyers.

The Sabres weren’t sellers last summer, when they went out and gave a big contract to Kyle Okposo and traded for Dmitry Kulikov to help their back end. They were a young team with a ton of potential, and decided to augment it with talented veterans. While Okposo was the team’s all-star representative, his scoring touch hasn’t been enough to help them out of the bottom of the Eastern conference. Rasmus Ristolainen

Meanwhile, they have to watch the Edmonton Oilers and (even more painfully) Toronto Maple Leafs experience huge gains from teenagers, turning into legitimate playoff contenders overnight. The teams that they’ve battled with for first overall picks are now surging to the top of the standings. Edmonton won a lottery that Buffalo had worked so hard for to get Connor McDavid, and Toronto tanked for Auston Matthews while the Sabres tried to compete a year ago.

But it’s not just the past two years that should have been building blocks for the Sabres. Like the Oilers, they’ve long had picks to help build a system—that just haven’t seemed to come together as a team. Since 2011 the Sabres have had eight picks in the top-16 of the draft, including four top-eights (Alex Nylander, Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen).

If you look at their track record, it’s actually quite good in these spots with all of them looking like solid if not excellent NHL players. So why hasn’t it come together for them yet? Is it just the injuries? Perhaps, but even the players who have been relatively healthy haven’t performed up to standards.

Ryan O’Reilly, he of the highest cap-hit on the team, has just 38 points in 52 games and hasn’t yet turned into the dominating elite centerman the Sabres had hoped for. Okposo has 39 and looks like he’ll end with his lowest total since the last lockout. Matt Moulson and Brian Gionta have shown their age and turned in a bottom-six production, and Marcus Foligno might not hit double-digits in goals this season.

So when will they experience their renaissance, like the Oilers and Leafs? Will it happen next season, when Eichel is healthy enough to lead their team all season, or are they doomed to sit in mediocrity while they pay off the long-term deals they’ve given to some of these veteran players. Fans should be wary of asking for any other high-priced additions this summer, and instead just rely on the internal development of all these highly drafted players. It looks like the Sabres will add another top pick to the stable this offseason, as long as they don’t do anything too crazy at the deadline.

Minor Transactions: 02/27/17

February 27, 2017 at 9:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s trade deadline week folks, and the NHL is abuzz with rumors and transactions. Last night we saw two huge deals go down, and today there may be more. For now, we’ll keep an eye on all the minor transactions around the league.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled Adam Erne and Yanni Gourde from the AHL. The pair of forwards have each played in a handful of games for the NHL squad this season, though neither has made a huge impact. It’s an odd move for the Lightning, who didn’t have any absences from practice yesterday according to Bryan Burns of the team site.
  • The New Jersey Devils have recalled Blake Coleman from Albany to replace the injured Pavel Zacha, who they have shifted to injured reserve. The move is retroactive to February 21st, but Zacha isn’t expected to play this week as he recovers from a concussion.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have brought Drew Miller and Jared Coreau back up from this minors, to help on their five-game road trip that begins tomorrow night in Vancouver. The team won’t return home until March 10th.
  • According to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun, the Jets have brought Julian Melchiori back up from the AHL. The defenseman was sent down just five days ago and cleared waivers less than a month ago.
  • The Blackhawks have assigned Lars Johansson to the Rockford IceHogs. Johansson came to the NHL to back up Scott Darling last night against the St. Louis Blues, but will head back to the AHL today.

Deadline Primer: New York Islanders

February 26, 2017 at 9:30 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 2 Comments

With the trade deadline now just days away, we continue to take a closer look at each team. Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?

The New York Islanders entered this season with renewed hope and optimism. Fresh off the team’s first playoff series victory since 1993, the Islanders were poised to challenge the Metropolitan Division titans for division supremacy. Instead, the Islanders fell flat and are only now making up for their slow start. It took a coaching change to spark the Islanders, and it might have been too little too late. The team currently sits one point out of a wildcard spot and faces a tough decision. Do they acquire help at the deadline to make a playoff push, or do they stand pat?

Record

29-22-10, 5th in the MetropolitanDivision

Deadline Status

2018:
 NYI 1st, NYI 2nd, NYI 3rd, NYI 4th, NYI 5th, NYI 6th, NYI 7th

Trade Chips

The Islanders are not working with much. They only have five draft picks this year, and only a couple of worthwhile prospects covered by other teams. Because the Islanders don’t look like they will acquire any rentals, they’ll have to part with players and prospects to receive any assets in return. Prospects Josh Ho-Sang and Mathew Barzal will garner the most attention, but it may be unwise for the Islanders to reduce their already slim prospect pipeline during a year where the Metropolitan Division is dominating the NHL.

The other major chip is Jaroslav Halak. Since being sent down to the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Halak has posted excellent stats, earning a 1.96 GAA and a .932 SV% in 17 games. The NHL goaltender market is almost non-existent—especially after the Ben Bishop trade—but there might be a GM out there willing to take a chance on a Halak resurgence.

Three Players To Watch For: G Jaroslav Halak, F Mathew Barzal, F Joshua Ho-Sang

Team Needs

The team needs top-six forwards. Losing Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo in the offseason has affected the Islanders and they have not been able to replace the departing players’ production. Moreover, with John Tavares an unrestricted free agent after next season, the Islanders will need to show him that they are willing to invest in the short-term future.

The Isles have been linked to Matt Duchene, but may not have the asset pool available to pull the trigger. The Tampa Bay Lightning’s Tyler Johnson might be a more suitable target, but his availability would depend on whether Tampa Bay plans to make a playoff run this season.

Who Has The Most 2017 Draft Picks?

February 26, 2017 at 8:24 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

With the NHL Trade Deadline in full swing, 2017 draft picks become key assets in acquiring players for a post-season run. The more draft picks a team has, the more it can offer in return. Moreover, draft picks that pan out early offer GMs cost-certainty by tying productive players to cheap contracts. A team cannot succeed in the NHL under the salary cap without some cheap talented prospects.

The Carolina Hurricanes leads the league in 2017 draft picks with ten, followed closely by the Philadelphia Flyers with nine. Technically Philadelphia has 10, but its 7th round pick—acquired from NJ—is conditional on either being a 2017 or 2018 pick. Given how GMs believe that teams will improve every year, this post assumes that the New Jersey Devils chooses that Philadelphia receives New Jersey’s 2018 pick instead.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Ottawa Senators has a league-least four draft picks. That may hamstring Ottawa’s ability to acquire players at the deadline because they cannot afford to lose any more picks this year. Another surprising tally is the Arizona Coyotes with six picks. The Coyotes will most likely pick up a few more before the trade deadline passes, but seven may not be enough for a lottery team with a modern analytical GM.

Wild Acquire Martin Hanzal From Coyotes

February 26, 2017 at 6:12 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 6 Comments

The rich just got richer in Minnesota, as the Wild have reached an agreement with the Arizona Coyotes on a trade to bring in talked-about deadline target Martin Hanzal. The Wild are “all-in” this season, as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Minnesota will send a first-round pick, second-round pick, and conditional pick that can go as high as another second-rounder to Arizona. The deal has since been confirmed as a 2017 first-rounder, 2018 second-rounder and 2019 conditional pick for Hanzal, Ryan White, and a 2017 fourth-rounder. The condition for the pick is as follows: if Minnesota wins one playoff round this year, it becomes a third-rounder and if they win two, it becomes a second-rounder. TSN’s Bob McKenzie adds that minor leaguer Grayson Downing will also head to Arizona and that the Coyotes will also retain 50% of Hanzal’s salary cap hit in the deal.

Hanzal is a big addition for the Wild, who have been so dominant this season that many did not expect them to make a major move at the deadline. Instead, GM Chuck Fletcher adds Hanzal to a lineup that already has Mikko Koivu and Eric Staal down the middle. One of the top names on the market, Hanzal could have slotted into the first line on a team like the Montreal Canadiens, who were long rumored to be his likely destination, but will likely skate on Minnesota’s third line, showcasing the depth that this team has. Hanzal was leading the Coyotes in goals this season with 16 and is coming off a 41-point campaign in 2015-16. A big pivot who can crash the net and play a hard-nosed game, Hanzal will add a physical element that has sometime been missing for the Wild.

The cost for the career Coyote center is a steep one though. Not many people expected the Wild to be where they are in 2016-17; they have 84 points and have a significant lead in points and games on the Chicago Blackhawks for the top spot in the Central Division and Western Conference. With that in mind, the Wild brass have clearly bought in to the Stanley Cup hype this season. To acquire Hanzal, a mere 26-point scorer this season, they have mortgaged the future with first, second, and to-be-determined selections. Granted, the Wild’s first-rounder this season will likely be somewhere between #26 and #31 and their second-round selection next season could be pretty far down as well, but it is still a steep price to pay, especially considering Minnesota was already without a second-round pick in 2017 due to their acquisition of Chris Stewart. More than anything, the deal has also set the bar for the forward market as we approach the deadline. If you already considered this to be a quiet trade season, the Hanzal deal has set a market price that could silence quite a few more deals between now and Wednesday.

Lightning Trade Ben Bishop To Kings

February 26, 2017 at 5:35 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 31 Comments

Superstar goalie and impending free agent Ben Bishop has been traded by the Tampa Lightning to the Los Angeles Kings. TSN’s Bob McKenzie was the first to break the news. The return for Tampa is confirmed to be 2016-17 surprise Peter Budaj, 2015 second-round defenseman Erik Cernak, a 2017 seventh-round pick, and another conditional 2017 pick. Details of the conditional pick are complicated, but in essence there is no pick if the Kings miss the playoffs and can go as high as a second-rounder depending on L.A.’s postseason success and Bishop’s play.

If this trade confuses you, you’re not alone, as it is officially the biggest surprise of the 2017 NHL Trade Deadline to date and will be tough to beat. The Kings just got back starter Jonathan Quick last night, after he had missed all but one game this season with injury. This is the same Quick that led the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014 and has a career 2.26 goals against average, a Conn Smythe, a Jennings, and an All-Star appearance. In his return, Quick allowed just  one goal on 33 shots against the rival Anaheim Ducks and looked like he was fully healthy and ready to lead the Kings back into a playoff spot. So is Bishop an insurance policy for the stretch run? It’s possible. Bishop is an impending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and would be, without question, the top goaltender on the open market. As far as deadline deals go, the Kings did not give up that much either. As good as Budaj has been, the 34-year-old was not in L.A.’s long-term plans. Cernak is a solid defensive prospect, playing for the OHL’s Erie Otters, who has a smart, responsible defensive style, but Cernak also lacks much offensive punch and was the King’s third or fourth-best defensive prospect at best.

The truly strange situation is that the Kings are currently fifth in the Pacific Division and sitting outside of a playoff spot and if they are going to get in, need scoring and not better goaltending. Budaj has been stellar and Quick is finally healthy. So why give up anything for Bishop when you may not even make the playoffs. It seems like Los Angeles could possibly have future plans for Bishop then. So does that mean Quick is on the trade block? Bishop’s career numbers are slightly superior to Quick’s, but Quick is the established goalie in Los Angeles and is signed long-term with a decent $5.8MM cap hit until 2022-23. Bishop would more than likely command a greater salary than that on the open market. So what’s the next move for GM Dean Lombardi and the L.A. Kings.

Meanwhile, the Lightning have received a solid backup to Andrei Vasilevskiy for the remainder of the season and possibly beyond, a young defenseman (which they are in need of), and some picks for a player they were willing to let walk in free agency. While many will debate this trade from the Kings side for the next month plus, GM Steve Yzerman can rest easy that he got something for nothing at this deadline in a time where Tampa Bay needs any good news they can get.
