Kings Sign Troy Grosenick And Mark Alt

The Kings have added some minor league depth, announcing the signings of goalie Troy Grosenick and defenseman Mark Alt to one-year, two-way contracts.  Both deals carry cap hits of $700K in the NHL.

Grosenick had a strong season with AHL Milwaukee in 2019-20, posting a 2.29 GAA with a .920 SV% in 33 games, his best showing since 2016-17.  The 31-year-old has a pair of NHL games under his belt from 2014-15 and will serve as a veteran recall option should one of Jonathan Quick or Calvin Petersen get injured in Los Angeles.

As for Alt, he has been a capable AHL defenseman for the past five seasons.  He spent the last two years in Colorado’s system after being claimed off waivers from the Flyers although his NHL action in that stretch has been limited to two appearances.  Last season with the Eagles, he had five goals and eight assists in 55 games along with a career-best +19 rating.

Both players will require passing through waivers in order to report to AHL Ontario next season.

Troy Grosenick Named AHL Man Of The Year

Milwaukee Admirals goaltender Troy Grosenick has been named the 2020 AHL Man of the Year, winning the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award. The honor is given to an AHL player for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations. Landon Ferraro was the previous winner, taking home the award in 2019 as a member of the Iowa Wild.

Grosenick, 30, joined the Admirals in 2018 following a trade from the San Jose Sharks and is the first player born and raised in the Milwaukee area to play for the organization. The veteran netminder was part of several charitable campaigns this season, donating money and time to childhood cancer research and anti-bullying programs.

Not only was he outstanding off the ice, but Grosenick was also a star on it, recording a .920 save percentage in 33 appearances for the Admirals and posting a 20-9-3 record on the year. He has two career NHL appearances, both with the Sharks in 2014-15.

With the signing earlier today of former Chicago Blackhawks forward Nick Schmaltz to a seven-year, $40.95MM contract extension, The Athletic’s Scott Powers (subscription required) wonders what kind of extensions might forwards Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome earn, as both will be eligible to sign new deals on July 1.

DeBrincat, who is in the second year of his three-year, entry-level contract, has already tallied 68 goals in two years, including a 40-goal campaign this season. With those numbers, Powers writes that the Blackhawks are most likely going to get DeBrincat to eventually sign a six-year deal, likely heading into the $8MM AAV-range, pointing out that a seven or eight-year deal is unlikely since a six-year deal will leave him looking for a third contract at age 27, the perfect age for a long-term extension. If he can continue posting 30-to-40 goal seasons, DeBrincat could be in line for double digit cap hits in the future.

As for Strome, the team may be better off waiting for another year to lock up the young forward. Strome has played well in Chicago with 14 goals and 45 points in 53 games, but both sides would be better off to wait another year for more proof that he deserves a big contract extension. Plus, it would be wise if Chicago doesn’t have two big contracts handed out in the same year, which could get expensive, possibly between $13-15MM combined.

  • The Athletic’s Adam Vingan reports that the Nashville Predators have activated defenseman Dan Hamhuis from injured reserve. The veteran blue liner has been out with a leg injury since February 23rd, but it finally ready to return. The team’s third-pair defender has played 53 games this season for the Predators and will now partner up with rookie Dante Fabbro, who is expected to make his debut Saturday against Columbus. The Predators also announced they have assigned Troy Grosenick to the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL.
  • SportsDay’s Matthew DeFranks reports that the Dallas Stars will be without goaltender Ben Bishop on Saturday and likely longer, as he is considered to be day-to-day. The 32-year-old Bishop has been a key reason why Dallas has been playing so well as they fight to hold onto their wildcard spot. Bishop has a 2.03 GAA and a .933 save percentage so far this year and may even be a Vezina Trophy finalist at this rate. NHL.com’s Mike Heika writes that he suffered a lower-body injury while going down into the butterfly in the Stars’ last game. DeFranks also adds that Mats Zuccarello and Justin Dowling are about three days away from returning to the lineup.
  • The Athletic’s Michael Russo (subscription required) writes that the Minnesota Wild are expected to be one of the most active teams in trying to sign St. Cloud State defenseman Jimmy Schuldt in the next few days. Schuldt finished his four-year college career Friday night, posting 38 career goals. Russo reports that the Wild hope to sign the four-year blue liner by burning the first year of his deal this season and allowing him to play in the NHL for the team’s final few games.

Nashville Predators Sign Troy Grosenick

The Nashville Predators have locked up their minor league goaltending depth, inking Troy Grosenick to a one-year two-way contract extension. Grosenick will earn $700K at the NHL level.

Grosenick, 29, hasn’t played an NHL game since the 2014-15 season but is an excellent minor league netminder. His numbers once again have been outstanding with the Milwaukee Admirals, posting a .918 save percentage through 31 games, good enough for fifth among AHL starters. That kind of history makes a minimum contract like this one worthwhile even if the Predators have their NHL goaltending duo locked up.

The Predators organization is obviously appealing to Grosenick too, as the pending unrestricted free agent would have likely had offers from any number of teams. The $225K minor league guarantee is nice, but having the stability of the first class Predators organization is always an extra selling point. Grosenick may share the AHL crease with prospect Niclas Westerholm next season if the Predators decide to bring him over to North America.

Their +12 goal differential also leads the league, as they look to repeat as Presidents Trophy winners this year. Predators Add Depth In Minor Move With Sharks

The Nashville Predators announced they have made a minor deal as they acquired forward Brandon Bollig and goaltender Troy Grosenick from the San Jose Sharks for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft.

It’s the second move for the Predators today, who earlier traded away forward Pontus Aberg in a three-team deal, that netted them a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft.

Bollig, a 31-year-old veteran, hasn’t played a game for the Sharks this season. The winger has played the past two years in the AHL and likely is being brought aboard to increase the depth on the Milwaukee Admirals, their AHL affiliate. With the Barracuda, Bollig has eight goals and two assists in 45 games this year with 68 penalty minutes.

Grosenick also will provide the team some depth on the goaltending depth chart. The 28-year-old has served as an emergency backup this year for the Sharks, but has never appeared in a game. He currently has a 2.98 GAA with the Barracuda in 20 appearances.

The unofficial second half of the 2017-18 season is underway tonight, with 12 teams in action after the All-Star break. One of the most interesting matchups might by the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets, both currently leading their division but dealing with troublesome injuries. The Lightning are without Victor Hedman, while the Jets are missing both Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba. As the dozen teams get ready to resume their schedule, we’ll keep track of all the minor transactions around the league.

With the bye weeks now over with, the schedule is in full swing today with 13 games on tap.  As a result, there should be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep tabs on those minor moves here.

  • The Sharks have recalled goalie Troy Grosenick from San Jose of the AHL, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports (Twitter link). This comes on the heels of starter Martin Jones being seen limping following their last game so it appears that Grosenick will be an insurance policy for the time being.  The 28-year-old has seen limited action in the minors this season, playing in just 15 games while posting a 2.91 GAA and a save percentage of .891.
  • The Blue Jackets announced via Twitter that they have recalled winger Markus Hannikainen as well as defenseman Dean Kukan from AHL Cleveland.  Hannikainen has spent most of the season with Columbus but had been sent down on Thursday to get into a minor league game last night.  As for Kukan, he has been up with the team on three other occasions already this season but has yet to play an NHL game in 2017-18.  He is their top scoring defender in the minors though with 15 points in 31 games.
  • Las Vegas Review-Journal’s David Schoen tweeted that the Vegas Golden Knights have sent veteran defenseman Jason Garrison back to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. The transaction was announced on the AHL transaction wire, according to Schoen. The 33-year-old blueliner was recalled Wednesday to fill in for injuries to defensemen Luca Sbisa and Jonathon Merrill. Many felt he was also brought up to face his old team Thursday, the Tampa Bay Lightning, but Garrison proved to be just the team’s extra defenseman in both games and was scratched both times. He was originally placed on waivers by the team on Oct. 27 after playing just four games with the Golden Knights.
  • The Minnesota Wild recalled forward Joel Eriksson Ek today after the team sent the 20-year-old to the Iowa Wild to get in some playing time while the team went on their bye-week. With Minnesota slated to play the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight, the youngster will return to the team’s fourth line. The 2015 first-round pick has struggled adjusting to the NHL with just one goal and five assists in 39 games so far this year.
  • While talk that defenseman Brett Pesce might be close to returning soon, the Carolina Hurricanes announced they have recalled defenseman Roland McKeown from the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL to hold his roster spot. The 22-year-old, 2014 second-round pick currently is tied for fifth in the AHL with a plus/minus of +22 and has three goals and 10 assists in 37 games for the Checkers. It will be his second trip to join the Hurricanes. He was recalled in early November and played in two games, garnering two assists.
