Penguins Expected To Be Sellers At Trade Deadline

Josh Yohe of The Athletic believes that the Pittsburgh Penguins will be sellers regardless of their position in the standings. Yohe wrote about the unusual position the Penguins find themselves in heading into the second half of the NHL season. Pittsburgh has fought its way back into the Wild Card conversation in the Eastern Conference, and despite being largely made up of veteran players, general manager Kyle Dubas has his eye on the future and intends to sell.

Yohe says that his league sources predict the Penguins will make multiple moves to jettison veterans and that “no one is safe” on Pittsburgh, except for the players holding full no-trade protection (Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to name a few). Marcus Pettersson is certainly a name Pittsburgh will move on from given his contractual status, but one name that could also go is forward Rickard Rakell. The 31-year-old is having a nice bounce-back season with 22 goals in 45 games. However, Yohe pours cold water on that notion, saying that Pittsburgh is likely to hold onto him for this year unless they receive a big offer.

While all signs point to Pittsburgh packing it in for the season and missing the playoffs for a third straight year, Yohe believes that the Penguins may see the trading of veteran players as an opportunity to call up some of their prospects who are NHL-ready, most notably goaltender Joel Blomqvist who is arguably the best netminder in the Penguins entire organization and their best chance at steady goaltending. Tristan Jarry has struggled for well over a calendar year and doesn’t look like an NHL goaltender at the moment, and Alex Nedeljkovic has been wildly inconsistent this season after putting together a nice campaign a year ago.

While the Penguins would love to move on from some of their pricier veterans, they will be in tough to do so as Jarry has three years left on his contract after this season with an AAV of $5.375MM, and defenseman Ryan Graves has four years on his deal at $4.5MM. Those deals were two of the first contracts Dubas handed out in Pittsburgh, and they’ve aged like milk. In previous years, those types of contracts would have been untradeable, but with the cap rising next season, it’s not out of the question that the Penguins could move on from those players in the next six months.

Penguins Activate Evgeni Malkin, Reassign Jesse Puljujarvi

The Pittsburgh Penguins have activated star forward Evgeni Malkin off of injured reserve. Malkin missed the Penguins’ last four games with an upper-body injury. He was named a game-time decision for the team’s Tuesday bout against Seattle, and his activation seems to be a good indication that he’ll play. Malkin was placed on injured reserve on Sunday, retroactive to his last appearance in the lineup on January 5th. To make room for the move, the squad has also assigned winger Jesse Puljujärvi to the minor leagues. Puljujarvi successfully cleared waivers on December 30th, and will now carry waiver exemption status through the month of January.

The Penguins will relish in Malkin’s return to the lineup. They’ve gone 1-3-0 in the four games he’s missed, getting confidently outscored 17-to-10. Malkin was on a hot streak leading up to his injury, with seven points in his last nine games. Despite that, the future Hall-of-Famer has been tame on the year as a whole, so far sat with eight goals and 32 points in 41 games this season. That puts him on pace for 64 points in 82 games, which would mark a career-low in seasons where Malkin played more than 50 games. He even surpassed that mark last season, when he scored 27 goals and 67 points while continuing his iron-man streak through its second consecutive season. Malkin’s role has been unwavering despite the slight dip in scoring. He’s averaged 18:35 in ice time this year, the exact same average that he posted in each of the last two seasons. Malkin sits just 14 games shy of his 1,200th NHL game. When he hits it, Malkin will join partner-in-crime Sidney Crosby as the only two to reach that mark with Pittsburgh. If he stays healthy, he’ll hit the milestone in Philadelphia on February 8th.

Meanwhile, Puljujarvi will head back to the minors after playing in his first five games since early December in Malkin’s absence. The former top draft pick only managed one point – an assist – in the matchups, while averaging nearly 12 minutes of ice time each game. He now has just nine points in 25 games this season – surpassing the four points he managed in 22 games last year but still far from the mark Pittsburgh would hope for. This assignment will likely set Puljujarvi up to play in his first AHL games of the season. He appeared in 13 games and scored nine points with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last year. They were Puljujarvi’s first minor league appearances since the 2018-19 season, when he was assigned to the minors for four games and scored at point-per-game pace. While this move is fairly inconsequential, given Puljujarvi’s waiving in December, it could be the start of an extended minor-league assignment – bringing a tough end to Puljujarvi’s chase for a role with the Penguins.

Penguins Place Evgeni Malkin On IR, Activate Philip Tomasino

The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed star Evgeni Malkin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Malkin has already missed Pittsburgh’s last three games, and will now be forced out of at least four more games. He had previously played in Pittsburgh’s first 41 games of the season, and was red-hot in the winter months. Malkin had seven points in nine games leading up to his injury.

In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh has also activated Philip Tomasino off of injured reserve, returning him from a four-game absence due to a lower-body injury. Tomasino has been one of the brightest spots of Pittsburgh’s middling year. Acquired for a fourth-round pick in a late-November trade with Nashville, Tomasino has since posted four goals and seven points in 16 games with the Penguins – the highest scoring pace of his career. He’s looked properly alive in the Penguins lineup, filling a much-needed top-six role after four up-and-down seasons in Nashville. Tomasino was a first-round draft pick in 2019, and made the jump into a full-time NHL role two seasons later. He scored 11 goals and 32 points in 76 games as a rookie – a very encouraging start for the then-20-year-old forward. But Tomasino struggled to maintain that into his sophomore year, and would only reach 20 points one more time – in 41 games of the 2023-24 campaign – during his time in Nashville.

Malkin’s absence will leave a glaring hole in the Pittsburgh lineup. The future Hall-of-Famer has, once again, been one of Pittsburgh’s most utilized forwards at both even-strength and on the power-play. The need for another top-unit forward could pave a golden path for Tomasino upon his return, giving the young center yet another chance to show Pittsburgh what he can do with a proper role. Pittsburgh has turned towards Anthony Beauvillier to fill the top-six vacancy over the last three games, though he hasn’t managed any scoring in the boosted role.

In other Penguins news, forward Michael Bunting will also miss the team’s Sunday game after being involved in a car accident outside PPG Paints Arena per Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports. Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan told Rorabaugh that Bunting isn’t expected to miss extended time. Bunting has been another red-hot Penguin, with four points in his last five games.

Evgeni Malkin Out Day-To-Day

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that star center Evgeni Malkin is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The news came out unexpectedly just minutes before the Penguins were set to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets this evening. In Malkin’s absence, Cody Glass will center the Penguins second line tonight, and forward Jesse Puljujarvi will draw back into the lineup after being a healthy scratch for the last month.

Malkin has been surprisingly healthy in the latter stages of his career, having played 82 games in each of the last two seasons. The 38-year-old isn’t having one of his better offensive seasons, but he remains a capable second-line center for Pittsburgh and the drop-off with him out of the lineup will be substantial. Pittsburgh has been fortunate to have both Malkin and Sidney Crosby dress in every game over the past two and a half seasons, but it hasn’t helped them in the standings as the team has missed the playoffs for two straight years and is in a dog fight to make it this season.

Malkin skated with the Penguins today, so its isn’t exactly clear what the issue is or when it occurred. He last played on Sunday against Carolina and was held without a point in 17:44 of ice time.

The former second-overall pick has eight goals and 24 assists in 41 games this season and has been better defensively for Pittsburgh than in previous years. Despite more attention to his defensive game, Malkin has struggled with turnovers as he no longer has the footspeed to create open ice for himself and has tried to force a lot of plays that result in giveaways.

Pittsburgh enters tonight tied for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and will need to beat teams like Columbus if they hope to break their two-year playoff drought.

Evgeni Malkin, Nikita Zadorov Fined By Department Of Player Safety

Last night’s matchup between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins had plenty of dramatics despite being a modest three-goal event. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety involved themselves this morning bestowing a $5K fine on Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin for slashing and fining Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov $5K for unsportsmanlike conduct. Both fines serve as the maximum allowable under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Both incidents are a part of the same event and happened relatively early in the game. According to video evidence provided by TSN, Zadorov began poking Malkin from the bench with his stick. Malkin was positioned on the offensive zone blue line and an offside was called on the Penguins shortly after.

Malkin immediately took exception to the poke and violently swung his stick at the Bruins’ bench. His stick made contact with Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei and a scrum between the two teams began.

Zadorov and Malkin were given minor penalties on the play but the Department of Player Safety reasonably didn’t want it to end there. It’s not the first time either player has received supplementary discipline from the Department of Player Safety in their careers.

East Notes: Ostapchuk, Malkin, Puljujarvi

The Ottawa Senators have loaned forward Zack Ostapchuk to the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League. Ostapchuk was recalled earlier this week and has been shuttled back and forth a few times over the last seven days in paper moves that were most likely made to accrue cap space. It’s unknown if this move is for a similar purpose, but it is certainly a possibility.

The 21-year-old dressed in three games this week for Ottawa, going scoreless while averaging just under nine minutes of ice time per game. In six games this season, the former second-round pick has a single assist and carries a plus/minus of +1. The Senators are back in action on Tuesday night against their provincial rivals the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In other Eastern Conference notes:

  • Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that we haven’t seen the last of Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin on the wing. The Penguins experimented with Malkin on Sidney Crosby’s wing, and while the results were outstanding (as expected), it made the team extremely top-heavy. Crosby and Malkin were flanked by Rickard Rakell and the threesome dominated in possession and ignited Crosby and Malkin offensively. However, on Friday against the Capitals, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan moved Malkin back to center in an effort to get the team’s second line going. Vensel believes Sullivan could move Malkin back to the wing again in the future, particularly if the Penguins were to go out and get a second-line center next summer.
  • Matt Vensel writes about Penguins forward Jesse Puljujarvi and his deployment this season. Puljujarvi has been a healthy scratch three times this year for Pittsburgh and has played just over 11 minutes per game. Vensel writes that a lot of people have a bone to pick with how the 24-year-old has been used thus far this season. Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan was reportedly okay with using Puljujarvi earlier in the year when he was producing offense, and it was a palatable trade-off for some of his defensive shortcomings. However, in the last two weeks, Puljujarvi’s offense just hasn’t been there with one point in his past seven games. Sullivan is quoted as saying the details of Puljujarvi’s defensive game haven’t been there and have been slipping.

Penguins Notes: Malkin, Karlsson, Rust

There’s some reminiscing in Pittsburgh today with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin starting their 20th and 19th years with the team, respectively. In his age-38 season, Malkin has retirement on his mind but rest assured it will be on his terms.

In an article from Josh Yohe of The Athletic (Subscription Required), Malkin explained that the final two years of his four-year, $24.4MM contract may be his last in the NHL. He said, “If I’m not playing right, if I’m not real happy with how I’m playing, then yes, these probably are my last two years. But I can’t say for sure that I’ll be done in two years. If I play well this year and next year, if I’m happy with how I’m playing, then maybe I’ll play a little more after that. That would be nice“.

Despite how his body may feel, he isn’t content with where the team has finished the past two seasons. Malkin explained that he wouldn’t retire before playing in the playoffs again saying, “I love the playoffs so much and I love our fans so much. I need to feel it again. I couldn’t leave if I never play in the playoffs again. Not until then“. Given where the Pittsburgh Penguins are in their contention window — the next time they make the playoffs may be the last they see of a franchise legend.

  • The organization received positive news on the injury front as Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports defenseman Erik Karlsson is medically cleared to play tonight. Karlsson missed most of Pittsburgh’s preseason nursing an upper-body injury. He’s primed for a big season, particularly on the team’s powerplay, with coach David Quinn taking over the team’s tactics with a man advantage.
  • On the flip side of the ’injury coin’, the Penguins will be without forward Bryan Rust for their regular season opener (X Link). He’s been on the team’s injured reserve retroactive to September 29th and was originally designated as day-to-day. He recently skated with the team in practice in a non-contact jersey indicating his imminent return.

Penguins Notes: Crosby, Malkin, Werner

Sidney Crosby’s 37th birthday came and went without a contract extension, which was always the plan according to Rob Rossi of The Athletic. Many believed Crosby would be extended on August 7th due to his superstitious nature, however, the 19-year veteran remains without a contract past next season.

Rossi’s league sources have informed him that the Penguins and Crosby remain on the same page when it comes to his new deal and the team is confident that they will reach a new agreement. Rossi also notes that Crosby has reportedly told those close to him that he plans to re-sign with Pittsburgh and that his priority this summer has been on his training for next season.

In other Penguins notes:

  • Rossi also squashed a rumor from earlier in the week that Penguins center Evgeni Malkin intended to retire from the NHL after next season and forgo the last year of his four-year contract. Malkin told Rossi that he hasn’t given any thought to retiring a year early and intends to play out the final two years of his contract. The 38-year-old is coming off the worst offensive season of his 18-year career but spent most of last year saddled with replacement-level wingers. Malkin managed to dress in all 82 regular season games for the second consecutive season and posted 27 goals and 40 assists while averaging 18:35 of ice time per game.
  • Teddy Werner will move into Dave Beeston’s role with the Penguins as alternate governor after Beeston’s departure from the Fenway Sports Group (as per Rossi). Beeston’s exit left the Penguins without a liaison to their ownership group and the senior vice president for Fenway Sports Management will fill in the role that had been occupied by Beeston for the past two years. Werner is the son of FSG chairman Tom Werner and has previously worked in Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers.

While Evgeni Malkin won’t be leaving the NHL anytime soon, he is thinking ahead to his next deal, telling TASS in Russia that he’d like to play at least one season with Metallurg Magnitogorsk before calling it a career.  The 37-year-old has played in that organization twice so far, first at the beginning of his career before being drafted by Pittsburgh while also suiting up for them back in 2012-13 during the lockout where he finished third in KHL scoring despite missing 15 games.  Malkin enters 2024-25 sitting 37th in all-time NHL points and with him having two years left on his contract with the Penguins, he will be moving up that list fairly quickly before potentially wrapping up his career back home.

Other international notes with an NHL connection:

  • While veteran free agent Nikita Gusev was hoping to return to the NHL next season, it doesn’t appear that will be the case. Sport-Express’ Mikhail Zislis relays that the 32-year-old is expected to return to Russia in the coming days and re-sign with Dynamo Moscow in the KHL.  Gusev last played in the NHL back in 2020-21 with New Jersey and Florida but was a dominant performer last season in Russia, leading the KHL in scoring with 89 points in 68 games, fueling the hope that he could return to the top level but it doesn’t appear that will happen.
  • Veteran defenseman Andrej Sustr has elected to return home, inking a contract with HC Dynamo, per a team release. The 33-year-old is a veteran of more than 400 NHL games between the regular season and playoffs but hasn’t seen action at the top level since the 2021-22 campaign.  Last season, Sustr played with Kolner Haie in Germany, recording 20 points in 44 games.
  • Unrestricted free agent center Philippe Maillet has signed a one-year deal with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland, per a team release. The 31-year-old returned to North America last summer after spending two years in Russia but spent all of last season in the AHL with Laval where he had 53 points in 67 games.  Maillet has two career NHL appearances under his belt with Washington back in 2020-21.
  • Former Florida blueliner Bogdan Kiselevich is on the move in Russia as Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk announced that they’ve signed him to a contract for next season. Kiselevich played in 32 games with the Panthers back in 2018-19 but returned to the KHL the following season, signing with CSKA Moscow.  The 34-year-old spent last season with Avangard Omsk, recording eight assists in 60 games.
  • Danny O’Regan is off to the KHL as Kunlun announced (Twitter link) that they’ve signed the veteran to a one-year deal. O’Regan has 30 career NHL appearances over parts of four years but after spending all of 2022-23 in the minors, he opted to head overseas.  The 30-year-old spent last season in Sweden with MoDo, picking up four goals and eight assists in 34 games.

Penguins Notes: Letang, Harkins, Malkin

Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports is reporting that Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang left practice today for what is being described as precautionary reasons. Not much else is known about the 36-year-old’s status, but head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters that Letang is banged up a little bit.

Letang could be dealing with a nagging issue as his play has slipped as of late. He has just a single point in his last seven games despite having been elevated to the team’s top power-play unit in place of Erik Karlsson. Overall, he is having one of the finest seasons of his career with four goals and 26 assists in 49 games while playing some of his best defensive hockey. He has flourished in a different role this season even if his play has trailed off as of late.

In other Penguins notes:

  • Rorabaugh is also reporting that Penguins forward Jansen Harkins has been placed on the injured reserve with a concussion. The 26-year-old had become a regular on the Penguins fourth line alongside veterans Noel Acciari and Jeff Carter and had been taking much of the team’s defensive zone starts in recent weeks. Harkins has been okay in a depth role for the Penguins, although he hasn’t provided much in the way of offense with just four assists in 34 games this season. No word yet on a timeline for Harkin’s return but he will presumably miss the Penguins games this week.
  • Rorabaugh has also reported that Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin had a maintenance day today and did not practice with his teammates. The 37-year-old skated briefly in a sweatsuit before the team’s practice while he was monitored by Penguins medical staff. Malkin hasn’t been himself this season as it appears the aging curve has started to catch up with the former Hart Trophy winner. In the last ten games, Malkin has struggled with just a single goal, and this is the second maintenance day he has received in the last few weeks leading to speculation that he could be dealing with a nagging injury of his own.
