Thirty-Five Players Placed On Waivers

September 23, 2018 at 1:03 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

After 25 players were placed on waivers Friday and another seven Saturday (all of which cleared), the biggest yet came today with 35 more players being placed on waivers, according to TVA’s Renaud Lavoie.

F Andy Andreoff (Tampa Bay)
F Chase Balisy (Ottawa)
D Julius Bergman (Ottawa)
F Connor Brickley (Nashville)
G Peter Budaj (Los Angeles)
F Michael Bunting (Arizona)
D Erik Burgdoerfer (Ottawa)
F Tim Clifton (San Jose)
F Gabriel Dumont (Tampa Bay)
D Stefan Elliott (Pittsburgh)
F Kurtis Gabriel (New Jersey)
F Tyler Gaudet (Nashville)
D Cameron Gaunce (Tampa Bay)
G Troy Grosenick (Nashville)
F Jimmy Hayes (Pittsburgh)
G Maxime Lagace (Vegas)
F Tobias Lindberg (Pittsburgh)
F Stefan Matteau (Vegas)
G John Muse (Pittsburgh)
G Eddie Pasquale (Tampa Bay)
F Nick Paul (Ottawa)
F Blake Pietila (New Jersey)
F Kevin Porter (Buffalo)
D John Ramage (New Jersey)
D Griffin Reinhart (Vegas)
F Ben Sexton (Ottawa)
D Patrick Sieloff (Ottawa)
D Brian Strait (New Jersey)
D Chris Summers (Pittsburgh)
F Adam Tambellini (Ottawa)
F Eric Tangradi (New Jersey)
D Jarred Tinordi (Nashville)
F T.J. Tynan (Vegas)
F Carter Verhaeghe (Tampa Bay)
F Garrett Wilson (Pittsburgh)

One of the more interesting players put on waivers is Reinhart, the fourth-overall pick back in 2012, who the Golden Knights took a flier on in the expansion draft. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound blueliner has never been able to match his size and skills together to make considerable NHL contributions. It was no different in Vegas, where the now 24-year-old never made an NHL appearance for the Golden Knights. He played 60 games for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves where he posted just two goals and 12 points.

Budaj, who has been a solid goaltender in previous year, may be past his prime as the 36-year-old couldn’t make an impact in Tampa Bay or Los Angeles last year, both places where they had backup goaltending issues at one point in the season last year. In eight games with the Lightning last year, he posted a 3.75 GAA and a .876 save percentage.

Other interesting players who saw significant NHL time last season include Andreoff, Brickley, Hayes, Dumont and Lagace.

New Jersey Devils Sign Brian Strait To Two-Year Deal

May 8, 2018 at 12:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The New Jersey Devils organization will have a familiar face back for the next two seasons, as today the team announced a two-year, two-way extension for defenseman Brian Strait. Strait spent this season in the AHL with the Binghamton Devils, after previously seeing NHL time with Pittsburgh, New York and Winnipeg. The contract will carry an NHL average annual salary of $675K.

Strait, 30, is exactly the type of player every organization wants in their minor league system. Content to play regularly in the AHL and help the younger players, while also having enough NHL experience to fill in should injuries arise for the big club. With 187 games under his belt, most of which with the New York Islanders, Strait is no stranger to the NHL.

Though he had just eight points this season, the team thought enough of him to give him an “A” as an alternate captain and use him extensively in tough situations. He’ll likely return in a similar role, and be ready if needed by the Devils.

New Jersey Devils Recall Seven Players

April 16, 2018 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The New Jersey Devils have recalled their “Black Aces”, several players who will skate with the team throughout the playoffs but are not expected to play. Christoph Bertschy, Nick Lappin, Michael McLeod, Blake Pietila, Kevin Rooney, Michael Kapla and Brian Strait are all on their way up from Binghamton. The AHL squad did not qualify for the playoffs, meaning the season is over for the rest of the team’s prospects.

For McLeod, the 12th-overall pick from 2016, it’s been a disappointing. After dealing with injury to start the year, he returned to the Mississauga Steelheads and didn’t take the expected step forward to become one of the most dangerous players in the league. Though his game has always been built on using his speed to play a solid two-way game, scoring 100 points in 77 games during the 2016-17 season showed off exactly how much offense he could create. In 44 games this year he recorded just 54 points, and Mississauga was knocked out in the first round of the OHL playoffs.

Hopefully a taste of the NHL playoffs will be able to spark another level in his development, and he’ll be battling for an NHL spot out of camp in the fall. Otherwise, he’s headed for the AHL to hone his skills and try to be the next young star to help widen New Jersey’s newfound window of contention.

West Notes: DeSimone, Canucks, Strait, Couture

March 30, 2017 at 4:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported on Tuesday that Nick DeSimone of Union College was headed to the San Jose Sharks, and now CapFriendly has the details on the contract. It will be a two-year, entry-level deal worth the maximum $925K each season. The contract will kick in for next season, meaning DeSimone will become a restricted free agent after the 2018-19 season, at the age of 24.

DeSimone had a solid season for Union scoring 19 points in 38 games, but lacks some of the high-end offensive upside of his free agent contemporaries. Instead, he’ll need to focus on improving his d-zone work and try to carve out a niche as a two-way defenseman in the AHL. Former NHLer Matthew Barnaby had this to say about him: “Great kid , Elite skater with good hockey sense.”

  • The Vancouver Canucks will welcome both Loui Eriksson and Troy Stecher back into the lineup tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Kings. Eriksson, signed to a six year, $36MM deal this offseason has been a bitter disappointment this season between injuries and ineffectiveness. With 24 points through 65 games, he will likely register his lowest total since his rookie season (when he played just 59 games) and end the season with fewer than 15 goals (he currently has 11).  Those are numbers the Canucks can’t be happy with, as Eriksson will enter his age-32 season next year looking for a big bounce-back. If he can’t, that contract will hang around their necks for the next several years, as it is very much buyout-proof due to front loading and signing bonuses.
  • Winnipeg has loaned Brian Strait to the Manitoba Moose after playing five games for the club. The former New York Islander recorded two assists during that time, but won’t be needed now that Dustin Byfuglien is back in the lineup and Nelson Nogier looks to finish the season with the NHL club.
  • Kevin Kurz of CSN reports that Logan Couture will miss at least three more games after getting hit in the mouth with a puck on Saturday night. That means Couture will miss the entire road trip through Western Canada, as the Sharks look to reclaim that top spot in the Pacific Division. Now tied with the Oilers and just three points ahead of the Flames, the Sharks could legitimately fall to a wildcard spot before the end of the season and possibly even have to face the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. It’s been a rough run for them lately, going 3-7 in their last ten.

Minor Transactions: 3/18/17

March 18, 2017 at 4:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Here is where we’ll keep tabs on today’s minor roster moves:

  • Tomas Nosek’s stint in Detroit only lasted a few hours as the Red Wings announced that he had been returned to Grand Rapids of the AHL after being recalled on an emergency basis this morning. The forward has yet to get into any games with the Wings this year but sits fifth in scoring with the AHL’s Griffins with 15 goals and 24 assists in 48 games.  Considering Darren Helm went down with an injury against the Avalanche this afternoon, there’s a chance Nosek could be back up with the big club before long.
  • With defenseman Paul Postma set to miss tomorrow’s game and Jacob Trouba out on more than a day-to-day basis, the Jets announced that they have recalled blueliner Brian Strait from AHL Manitoba. After spending the past three seasons exclusively in the NHL with the Islanders, the 29 year old has yet to suit up with Winnipeg this season.  In 50 minor league contests, Strait has two goals and 10 assists.
  • Flames goalie Brian Elliott returned to the lineup last night and as a result, they terminated the emergency recall conditions on Jon Gillies and assigned him back to Stockton of the AHL. Gillies is in his second professional season and has played in 34 games this season for the Heat, posting a 14-14-1 record with a 2.97 GAA and a .909 SV%.
