Mason Lohrei Signs ATO With Providence Bruins

March 31, 2023 at 9:36 am CDT | by Tanner Holubar 1 Comment

Defenseman Mason Lohrei has signed an amateur tryout contract with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. The Boston Bruins announced the signing via Twitter.

The 6-4, 209 pound blueliner was a second round pick, No. 58 overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He will join the AHL Bruins for the remainder of the season playing for one of the league’s best teams.

Lohrei, 22, recently completed his sophomore season at Ohio State University, scoring 32 points (4G, 28A) in 40 games. He recorded 29 points in 31 games as a freshman in 2021-22, and now looks to take that offensive production into the pro ranks.

Lohrei has the size that NHL teams still covet for their blueline, and a player of such size with a bit of an offensive flair makes him an intriguing prospect to watch moving forward. As he irons out his contract with the Boston Bruins, he can get his feet wet in pro hockey for a Providence Bruins team looking to make a run at the Calder Cup.

The Boston Bruins are in an ideal situation for prospect development, as their AHL affiliate has been a top-five team in the league this season while the NHL’s Bruins have already clinched the Presidents Trophy for this season. Allowing Lohrei to jump into a playoff race at the start of his pro career will only serve as an added benefit for the young defenseman.

Boston Bruins Sign Trevor Kuntar To Entry-Level Contract

March 29, 2023 at 12:12 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

The Boston Bruins have signed forward Trevor Kuntar to a two-year, entry-level contract, the team announced on Wednesday. The contract begins in the 2023-24 season and carries a cap hit of $867,500.

Kuntar, 21, was drafted by the Bruins in the third round (89th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. He recently completed his junior season at Boston College, where he tallied 13 goals and 16 assists in 34 games.

Kuntar was a key contributor for Boston College this season, helping the Eagles reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 Hockey East men’s tournament as the eighth seed, forcing second-ranked Merrimack to double overtime before ultimately losing 1-0. He finished third on the team in scoring behind Philadelphia Flyers first-round pick Cutter Gauthier and Anaheim Ducks prospect Nikita Nesterenko, who’s already signed his entry-level contract and played NHL games after the conclusion of the Eagles’ season. Kuntar also won a Hockey East championship with Boston College during his freshman season in 2021.

The 6-foot, 196-pound forward is known for his scoring ability combined with his physical game, which makes him an effective net-front presence. He’s expected to add some needed depth to the Bruins’ weak prospect pool and could play NHL games before his contract expires in 2025, with Boston looking for cheap, young talent.

The team did not say whether Kuntar would sign an amateur tryout with Boston’s AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, and make his professional debut there before the end of the 2022-23 season.

Taylor Hall Nearing Return For Boston Bruins

March 28, 2023 at 9:39 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 3 Comments

  • An interesting conundrum is developing with the Boston Bruins as Taylor Hall is getting closer to returning from injury. Hall has already been skating with Boston for a few days and TSN Insider Darren Dreger has said that sources indicate he is close to a return. The issue is that the Bruins don’t have any cap space for Hall to get back into the lineup. Boston loaded up at the trade deadline with the additions of Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway and have precious little cap space left to facilitate Hall’s return to the ice. This is sure to be an something to keep an eye on these next few days, and it is something other teams will certainly take notice of as we are less than three weeks away from the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs, a time in which Boston no longer must be salary cap compliant.

Update On Mike Reilly After AHL Injury

March 26, 2023 at 8:28 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

  • Bruins defenseman Mike Reilly suffered a serious injury in the minors today, one that saw him knocked unconscious and stretchered off the ice. Fortunately, AHL Providence announced after the game (Twitter link) that he is alert, conscious, and able to walk around.  The veteran has spent the bulk of the year in the minors but is likely to be a Black Ace recall at some point in Boston’s playoff run.

Boston Bruins Recall Oskar Steen On Emergency Basis

March 26, 2023 at 2:32 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 1 Comment

The Boston Bruins have announced that forward Oskar Steen has been recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, on an emergency basis. The recall puts Steen in a position to play his first NHL game(s) of the 2022-23 season.

Steen, 25, has been a developmental success story for the Bruins organization, as the 2016 sixth-round pick has 100 points in nearly 200 career AHL games and has 23 total NHL games to his name. That’s a solid return for such a late draft pick, and with an $800k cap hit through next season Steen should serve as capable, energetic depth for a stacked Bruins team.

Steen scored 35 points in 49 AHL games last season and got 20 games at the NHL level, scoring six points. Due in large part to how talented this year’s Bruins lineup is from line one through four, Steen hasn’t yet played in the NHL this season.

But despite that disappointment, he has remained a healthy contributor to Providence, where he has scored 31 points and helped them clinch a Calder Cup playoff spot.

Now, Steen will potentially get a chance to play some NHL games and show that can be an option for the team next season. With the Bruins potentially set to be tight against the salary cap’s upper ceiling for next season, Steen’s affordable cap hit and progress in the AHL could make him an attractive candidate for a bottom-six role next season. Now called up to his team’s main roster, Steen will have the chance to make his case in front of Bruins decision-makers.

Bruins Making A Run At Jason Polin

March 25, 2023 at 4:53 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 2 Comments

Mark Divver, a contributor at the NHL, reports that the Boston Bruins will make a big run at the goal-scoring forward. Secondly, Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe also reports that GM Bill Guerin and the Minnesota Wild also have a ton of interest in the Western Michigan product as well. Divver mentions that Polin will be heavily swayed by which team will be able to get him into the lineup right away.

Both the Bruins and the Wild could certainly use a player of Polin’s caliber for the rest of the season and beyond. The Bruins, with eight players projected to become unrestricted free agents at the conclusion of the season, will need to get creative when it comes to building next year’s roster. The Wild, on the other hand, are still handicapped due to the buyout penalties given to them by Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, giving them an even larger need to maximize production from lower costs.

A.J. Greer Suspended One Game

March 24, 2023 at 3:45 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 5 Comments

3:45 PM: The NHL Department of Player Safety has suspended Greer for one game after his hearing. This suspension means Greer will miss Boston’s contest tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning,

10:00 AM: Boston Bruins forward A.J. Greer is facing a potential suspension, as a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety is scheduled today for a cross-check on Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Hoffman during Thursday night’s game.

The incident occurred late in the first period and resulted in a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for Greer. He approached Hoffman as the two teams were lining up for a faceoff, delivering a cross-check directly to Hoffman’s face.

Greer has been an unexpected story this season, becoming a full-time NHLer for the first time on one of the best teams in league history. The 26-year-old winger has played in a career-high 52 games this season for the Bruins after signing a deal in free agency, recording five goals, six assists, and a team-high 85 penalty minutes in a fourth-line role.

Hoffman missed most of the second period to receive care but did return to the game. If suspended, it will be the first supplemental discipline of Greer’s NHL career.

Taylor Hall Returns To Practice

March 22, 2023 at 1:00 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

With the playoffs beginning in just a handful of weeks, it appears an important piece of the Boston Bruins lineup is gearing up for a return from injury. Winger Taylor Hall was practicing in a non-contact jersey this morning, per The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa.

The skilled winger has been out of action since the end of February with a knee injury, and the Bruins are currently using his $6MM cap hit on long-term injured reserve to stay cap compliant down the stretch. If Hall is ready to return before the start of the playoffs, April 17, Boston would need to operate with an extremely trim roster to stay compliant before the end of the regular season. That likely won’t matter much for their success, with the President’s Trophy all but clinched.
